The most beautiful buildings in Melbourne
State Library of Victoria
Melbourne’s central library was set up in 1854, making it one of the first free public libraries in the world. Architect Joseph Reed was behind the design. The first stage of the library opened in 1856, with a collection of 3,800 books, and included most of the front wing and the Queen’s Hall reading room.
National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) International
This grand modernist building on St Kilda Road is Australia’s oldest and most popular art museum. The NGV International building by architect Roy Grounds opened in 1968. The gallery is known for its top-ranking exhibition (which includes a Rembrandt, a Bonnard and Tiepolo), and fantastic painting collections (before we’ve seen exhibitions devoted to Van Gogh, and Monet).
Melbourne’s GPO
The building began construction in 1859 and took the next five decades to construct. American architect Walter Burley Griffin redesigned the sorting hall into a public hall around 1919. The space functioned as a post office for most of the 20th century until 1993 when Australia Post decided it wanted to move its post office functions into smaller shopfronts. Many commercial ideas were put forward, though none came to fruition until 2001, when it was hired by developers with the goal of turning it into a shopping center.
Manchester Unity Building
Marcus Barlow designed the twelve-storey concrete-covered steel structure which reached the building height limit of 132 feet. Construction was put off because of the Great Depression but began early in 1932 and builders worked around the clock in eight-hour shifts to make sure that the ground and first floors were open for trade by September that same year. The ground floor was home to 23 shops. On the 12th floor there was a rooftop garden cafe fitted with a fountain, pond and Japanese palms, and the basement served as a tea room and cafe.
21.What can we learn about the building Melbourne’s GPO?
A.Its construction lasted about 50 years.
B.It’s close to Manchester Unity Building.
C.It was specially designed to be a shopping center.
D.It is the most popular shopping center in Australia.
22.Whose design was the oldest building of the four?
A.Joseph’s. B.Roy’s. C.Walter’s. D.Marcus’s.
23.A painting fan is most likely to visit ________.
A.State Library of Victoria B.NGV International
C.Melbourne’s GPO D.Manchester Unity Building
B
Throwing a rock into a calm body of water creates a ripple (波纹;波浪般起伏) effect across the calm water, until those ripples reach the edge of the water. It also explains how our actions affect other people. When we show love and kindness to others, the powerful effect of our actions spreads out further. The same goes for dislike or anger. It is important that we should begin being more thoughtful about our actions and words.
Love can reach so many different people, making it a powerful force in the world. Anger has the same effect. The world would be a better place if we learn to love and show kindness to others. We can’t always control what others do, but we have power over our actions and contribute our own ripples into the world.
We don’t always know the effect that our actions have on others. There will be times when you are angry. Some people may feel a sense of short-lived relief when they throw a rock of anger into the world, but that feeling usually changes into shame and anger towards oneself eventually. Anger hurts yourself and the world in the meanwhile. I suggest walking away for a while when you feel angry. Spreading love and kindness not only has positive effects on others but also on ourselves. You get to enjoy it, and the people around you can enjoy it too. Personally, I feel my best when I help others and I feel my worst when I’ve made someone upset. When we put kindness into the world, we’ll feel thankfulness, sympathy, and understanding. Let my kindness guide my decisions and this allows love and connection to ripple out into the world.
It’s important that we take care of ourselves when we show love and kindness for others. When we love ourselves, we’re then able to love others. And when we let this love and kindness guide our decisions, the world will become more beautiful.
24.For what reason does the author mention the experience of throwing a rock into a pond?
A.To introduce the topic of this text.
B.To see how ripples spread in water.
C.To teach us how to make big ripples.
D.To share the very interesting experience.
25.Why does the author advise you to walk away for a while when you are angry?
A.To find a place to think over what has happened.
B.To talk about your problems with someone else.
C.To stop those ripples of anger from spreading.
D.To avoid seeing the person making you angry.
26.How is the third paragraph mainly developed?
A.By referring to a theory. B.By making comparisons.
C.By giving some examples. D.By analyzing cause and effect.
27.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Dislike usually leads to shame and anger in the end.
B.Anger has a similar effect on our actions to kindness.
C.Kindness or anger ripples out to other people nearby.
D.Love and kindness make the world much more beautiful.
C
A new system, known as “gait (步态) recognition” is already being used by police on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai. The Chinese technology company Watrix developed the system.
The system works in a similar way to face recognition. Cameras capture (捕获) video of people in public places. Then, machines powered by artificial intelligence (AI) examine and study the video. Facial recognition systems identify the shapes and expressions on a person’s face to identify them. Gait recognition uses a person’s body shape and their way of walking to identify them. The system records a person’s shape and movements and then creates a model of the way they walk.
Huang Yongzhen is a former researcher who co-founded Watrix in 2016. He told the Associated Press that the system would not easily be misled by a person changing their usual way of walking or other body movements. This is because the AI system is designed to examine all movements over the entire body. “We believe you are totally unique in the way you walk.” Huang said.
According to Huang, his system can identify people from up to 50 meters away. It is designed to work even when a person’s face is covered or hidden. Successful facial recognition usually requires clear, close-up images of a person’s face. At present, the Watrix system is not able to identify people in real-time. Users have to enter video into the system, which then takes about 10 minutes to process each hour of video.
Huang says his gait recognition system is correct 94 percent of the time. This is below the success rate of many face recognition systems, which is a little discouraging. But he adds that using biometric (生物特征的) recognition to preserve social security and manage society is an unstoppable tendency. With professional development, gait recognition is meant to be a great business.
28.How does the system of gait recognition work?
A.By identifying people’s movements in real-time.
B.By analyzing the movements of people’s legs.
C.By distinguishing a person’s body shape and movements.
D.By recording the shapes of and expressions a person’s face.
29.What makes gait recognition possible?
A.Facial expressions are unique to people.
B.Artificial intelligence system develops fast.
C.People’s way of walking is impossible to change.
D.Walking patterns vary from person to person.
30.Which word best describes Huang’s attitude towards the system?
A.Pessimistic. B.Favorable.
C.Vague. D.Cautious.
31.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A guidebook. B.A magazine.
C.A novel. D.A diary.

Female birds sing, too, but scientists tend to tune in to male birdsong and ignore female songs. It highlights a long-standing bias (偏见) and helps us think about why that bias persists (持续).
Since the beginning of modern birdsong research, the field has focused on male songbirds. Any serious birder could tell you that females do sing, sometimes as frequently as males. However, early birdsong researchers tended to be men. Men are significantly less likely than women to lead research projects studying female songs. Thus, we are missing key behaviors as a result of historical biases caused by a lack of diverse participation in science.
So how do we make science welcoming and accessible for all? We need to communicate better with nonscientists. Engaging the public in science is essential for basic science findings that influence how we perceive the world around us.
For example, understanding that female birds do sing matters not only to scientists but also to the billions of people who hear the sounds of wild birds every day. In many species, males and females look similar from a distance, but can be distinguished by ear. Paying close attention to which sounds each sex makes and thinking about why they might be producing them opens up a richer window into the environment around us. It turns out female birds use songs for all the same reasons male birds do: to signal individual identity, defend valuable territories and attract potential mates.
Public awareness of female birdsong has the potential to change the science itself. Apps like eBird collect millions of public observations and audio recordings of birds every year. Increasing public engagement and involvement with research promises to benefit the scientific community and society more broadly. In many cases, scientists and experts already have strongly held biases about the way the world works, and these biases allow mistaken conclusions to persist. Public observers often make better observers of the world around them because they lack preconceived ideas.
Female birds sing! We welcome a future where research and communication combine to improve our understanding of the world around us and deepen our connections to each other and the natural world.
32.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Who is to blame for the long-standing bias.
B.Why female birdsong is long ignored by scientists.
C.What contributes to diverse participation in science.
D.How men have conducted modern birdsong research.
33.Why is it important for us to be aware of female birdsong?
A.It will enable us to become real scientists.
B.It will help us distinguish bird species by ear.
C.It will expand our understanding of the world.
D.It will make advanced science accessible for all.
34.What does the underlined word "preconceived" mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Biased. B.Creative.
C.Mistaken. D.Varied.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Why we Didn't Know That Female Birds Sing?
B.Advancing Science: How Bias Leads Us Forward
C.New Research Has Found Female Birds Sing Too!
D.A Case Study of Gender Bias in Science Reporting

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a young boy, I was always a troublemaker and up to no good. I liked playing tricks and enjoyed treating animals in an unfriendly way, like running after cats crazily, making them scared at the sight of me. Besides, I often used a handmade catapult (弹弓) to shoot at birds on the trees.
All this did afford me indescribable pleasure but also got me unkind stares and blames from people around. My parents disapproved of my behavior and were constantly criticizing me for the tricks I played. I was even given a good beating from my father from time to time. Nevertheless, I ignored their warnings and did not correct my ways until an incident occurred.
One summer noon when I was eight, I was alone at home and just finished lunch. Feeling very hot and bored, I decided to hang around the neighborhood, holding my trusty catapult.
Soon, I came to Mr Smith’s house. His pet dog, big and strong, was tied to a post outside his house, lying in the shade lazily. Looking around, I found that no one was in sight. I decided to make good use of my catapult to play tricks on the massive dog. Picking up a few small stones from the ground, I aimed at the dog and fired them one by one. Several stones hit the poor dog and it began to bark (吠) loudly in pain and jump up and down. But I felt so fun that I didn’t stop doing so. Eventually, the dog’s anger was fueled and it barked wildly at me while struggling to break away from the rope. Not realizing anything wrong with my crazy behavior, I was just laughing happily.
Suddenly, the rope that tied the dog loosened and the big dog got free from its bonds. In no time, with a few powerful steps the dog was on me. Its sharp teeth sank into my leg. I screamed with pain and fright and fell to the ground, shouting out for help.
