Back in February, Giorgio Lo Porto, an Italian living in the UK, posted a video on TikTok about his new neighbor—and their unbelievable connection. It started when Giorgio left a note to his neighbor, praising the nice piano performance and requesting one more song called “My Heart Will Go On”.

As the music burst through the wall from the other side, the neighbor’s answer was clear. And their exchange soon turned into piano duets(二重奏). The two pianists agreed to “meet” on the weekend. “This was our way of saying, ‘I don’t know who you are, but I’m here. You are not alone.’” Giorgio said.

The neighbor’s name was Emil and he was 78 years old from Poland. He lost his wife in December due to the COVID-19, and the only consolation left to Emil was his piano. He played the music his wife loved at 2 p. m. every weekend.

Later, Giorgio shared his very own piece titled “Dear Emil”. “When I wrote that song, I started picturing Emil’s life. An old man lost the love of his life because of this stupid virus. He’d spent days alone at home due to the lockdown(封锁), playing his wife favorite piano piece every weekend until a note appeared on his door.  *  . Although they didn’t know who was playing, it didn’t matter. You can be the light to somebody else’s darkness.” said Giorgio.

On March 14th, he received word that Emil had left the world forever in his sleep. “And now he is reunited(团聚)with his wife.” Giorgio wrote, “But dear Emil, you’ll be in my heart… You said I was your light, but you’ve been mine too. Bye, Emil!”

36Giorgio wrote a note to Emil mainly because he ________.

Afelt a little homesick for Italy Bwanted to play the piano duets with Emil

Choped to comfort the lonely old man Dloved Emil’s music and expected to enjoy more

37The word “exchange” in Para. 2 can be replaced by “________”.

    Amusic Bconversation Cchange Drelationship

38Which of the following can be put in  *  ?

    AThen he was in trouble.

BBut he didn’t know who the neighbor was.

CBecause music could bring light to people’s life.

    DAnd a new friendship started.

39What can we infer from the passage?

AGiorgio and Emil did piano duets every weekend after Emil’s wife’s death.

BEmil’s excellent performance aroused Giorgio’s interest in learning the piano.

CGiorgio’s note brightened up Emil’s belief and love for life.

DThe experience didn’t have a special meaning to both the pianists.

40What would be the best title for the passage?

ALight Each Other in the Darkness BReunion in the Music

CThe Exchanged Notes DA Performance for the Beloved

Li Zihan is a 13-year-old girl from Beijing. These days, she and her friends have been doing unusual things. They imagine themselves to be fairies and dance in their bathrooms. Li even dyed(染色)her mother’s white dress blue, believing that it would look better.

“We might have the so-called “chuunibyou”(中二病), thinking we are so different and having a bunch of(一连串)crazy ideas,” Li said. “I have to say it’s a little funny and silly.”

Chuunibyou comes from Japanese. Japanese radio host Hikaru Ijuin first used the word “chuunibyou” during a radio program in 1999. It means “Middle School Second Year Syndrome(综合征)”. Teenagers around 13 or 14 years old are more likely to have it, but it can happen to people of any age. “Chuunis” often act as if they knew everything. They believe they are cooler than other people and can do great things. Some even believe they have special powers and are destined(命中注定的)to save the world.

Wang Liren, a professor at Northeast Normal University, said that when students reach puberty(青春期), they become eager(渴望的)to show that they are different and independent. Sometimes they overdo it. That is where chuunibyou comes from.

But chuunibyou doesn’t really need to be treated(治疗). It’s just a phase(阶段)of growth that many people may experience. Although it is silly, it shows the passion(激情)that young people have and the possibilities they dream of. There are many chuunibyou teenagers in anime(动漫)and TV series. They may seem silly, but they can also be inspiring.

41Li Zihan had a lot of crazy ideas except ________.

    Aimagining herself to be fairies

Bdying her mother’s white dress blue

Cthinking herself might have the so-called “chuunibyou”

    Ddancing in the bathroom

42Which of the following do you think is the “chuunibyou” symptom(症状)?

    ARefusing to finish the homework.

BBeing crazy about singing and dancing.

    CFeeling unhappy all day.

DThinking himself will never get infected(感染)with covid–19 even without any protection.

43What can we know from the last paragraph?

ASomeone who has chuunibyou must go to see the doctor.

BThe chuunibyou people may be passionate and inspiring.

COnly in anime and TV series can we see chuunibyou teenagers.

DPuberty is a dangerous phase that each one has to experience.

44What is the writer’s attitude toward “chuunibyou”?

    AWorried. BSupportive. COpposite. DAcceptable.

    45The writer’s writing purpose is to ________.

Aexplain what chuunibyou is. Bintroduce the troubles that teens cause.

Cgive advice on how to go through puberty. Dshow a survey from Professor Wang.

When I was a kid, my siblings(兄弟姐妹)and I used to have ice cream for dessert. Everyday, we would c    51     which ice cream flavor to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a bowl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat(款待)as fast as we c    52    .

Once when I was     53    probableabout 10 or 11, our grandpa c    54     to visit us. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. On this particular occasion, my sister and I were making bets(打赌)as to who could finish our ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, “Why would you want to finish first? If you eat slowly, it will last     55    long. You should have a competition to see who can finish last.” Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course, this is about more than just dessert.

Too often, kids want to scramble(争夺)for more, whether it’s more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit persists(持续)into our adult years, and we end up constantly scrambling for more. We never d    56     the skill of appreciating what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of     57    tastetheir widely known dessert, which could l    58     to a happier life for them.

What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the chance to enjoy what’s     59     front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It’s a lesson that, I think, has m    60     my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it.
