When James Gordon was in school, one teacher wrote a comment on his report card that “James finishes his work first and then breaks classroom rules.” Back then, no one knew what the future would be for one of the funniest actors in Hollywood. Believe it or not, he had a tough time making friends in school, because of his reading disorder. Despite that, his ability to make his classmates laugh helped him make friends.
Unfortunately for Gordon, his life changed greatly after his father lost his job and his mother fell sick. These forced the family to live out of their camper van(野营车) tor a full eight months, parking in campgrounds. “When I was about 14 or 15, my father lost his job and I actually became homeless for quite some time, but of course, I grew up in Canada and I thought we’d gone camping,” James said in an interview.
The famous actor attended school until he was in 10th grade when he left to work 8-hour night shifts to help the family make money. Long hours of work made him very tired, especially from the lack of sleep, and he just couldn’t focus during class. When he turned 16, his mother became ill, he had to quit school to care for her and work full-time.
During the unfortunate times Gordon discovered his talent for stand-up comedy. His comedy career rocketed as he scored roles in various Hollywood TV shows and movies throughout the 1990s and 2000s. “I don’t think human beings learn anything without desperation,” Gordon told CBS of his early success. “If you aren’t desperate at some point, you aren’t interesting.”
1. What do we know about James Gordon in school?
A. He was good at most subjects. B. He was interested in funny jokes.
C. He was often distracted in classrooms. D. He was talented in amusing his classmates.
2. What directly caused James Gordon to drop out of school?
A. His mother’s illness. B. His pressure of part-time job.
C. His bad behaviour in class. D. His father’s unemployment.
3. What does James Gordon think of suffering?
A. It is better than education. B. It stops one from trying.
C. It is helpful to one’s success. D. It makes people feel bored.

Gravy started working as a comfort dog at Grand Ledge High School in Michigan in September. She showed off tricks in the hallways with her handler(驯兽员), Capra, and made students laugh aloud. When students learned that Gravy’s first birthday fell just before Thanksgiving break, they asked Capra if they could throw a party. Capra said sure, thinking there wouldn’t be many people interested. However, on the big day, there were several hundred students in this gym.
The pandemic(大流行病) has been hard on students across the United States. Many young people experienced loneliness and the loss of loved ones. To solve the problem, schools have hired social workers and increased the number of their social-emotional learning classes. In some cases, they bought dogs.
Undoubtedly, the dogs make kids happy. “He’s kind of like a rock star; when the kids see him coming, they smile,” said Traci Souva, an art teacher at North Huron Schools who trains Chipper, another comfort dog. “A lot of times the kids will tell Chipper what’s wrong rather than adults, and that’s pretty amazing.”
There are possible blemishes of having dogs in school. These include cleanliness, and student fears. But school officials say these are all manageable. The dogs are highly trained and always with a handler, so no student is forced to communicate with the dogs if they don’t want to.
Since the pandemic, demand for trained dogs in schools “has just increased,” said Nikki Brown, a dog trainer and the director of Canines for Change, a nonprofit that trains dogs for work in schools. Over the last year, her organization has provided dogs to at least seven areas in Michigan, including Grand Ledge. “The dogs are highly trained to be in a school environment,” she added. “They are trained to work with kids with emotional problems. They sense stress. By the dogs’ behaviour they might warn a teacher of a kid who is struggling
emotionally”
4. Which of the following best describes Gravy as a comfort dog?
A. Tricky. B. Popular. C. Humorous. D. Caring.
5. What does the underlined word “blemishes” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Requirements. B. Disadvantages. C. Influences. D. Suggestions.
6. What can we infer from Nikki Brown’s words?
A. Working on campus brings a lot of pressure to dogs.
B. There is a high global market demand for trained dogs.
C. School environment can affect dogs’ behaviour greatly.
D. The dogs have the ability to notice students' mental illness.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. How dogs relieve students’ mental problems
B. How dogs ensure students’ safety on campus
C. How dogs enrich students’ after-school activities
D. How dogs develop students’ sense of responsibility

The sighting of a new family of gray wolves in Oregon’s Cascade mountains has given wildlife protectors hope that the recovery of the endangered animal in the state is on the way. The state’s fish and wildlife department(部门) said a group of two adults and two babies was recorded by a track camera in August.
The wolves were found in the area of Warm Springs and officials have named it AKW—a new area of known wolf activity. If the group still has all four members surviving at the end of the year, the animals will be known as the Warm Springs group, the state’s third one in the northern Cascades. “Wolves will move to different places, but when we have resident wolves, like we know they’re sticking in that area, that’s when we create an AKWA to make sure the wolf count rise constantly.” the agency’s worker, Michelle Dennehy, told USA Today.
Many years of hunting of gray wolves almost made them die out across the nearby 48 US states by the middle of the last century. In Oregon at the end of 2009 only 14 wolves were known to exist. With protections from the Endangered Animals Act beginning in 1974, numbers have risen slowly since, to 175 in Oregon by the end of last year, living in more than 35 groups.
“I hope this will be an exciting new chapter in the story of wolf recovery in the state. Having more wolves establish families in western Oregon will be important for the long-term survival of these beautiful animals,” Amaroq Weiss, senior wolf protector at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement.
8. How did people find the gray wolves?
A. By sighting their families. B. By taking their pictures.
C. By recording their voices. D. By observing their tracks.
9. What do we know about AKWA from the second paragraph?
A. It is created according to wolves’ species. B. It aims to prohibit wolves’ moving around.
C. It can help the increase of wolf population. D. It will warn people to watch out for wolves.
10. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Add some background information. B. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
C. Offer solutions to wildlife protectors. D. Show reasons of gray wolves’ hunting.

Can you change your luck?
Sometimes, everything seems to go wrong. 11 . Your back aches. Your cat keeps throwing up. Faced with difficulties large or small, you feel like your life is always taking a turn for the worse. You begin to wonder if you are just an unlucky person.

Lucky people also expect good things and can turn bad experiences into good. “They tend to be—no surprise—optimistic people, and they also recover from the bad things that happen,” Wiseman says. “If bad things happen, they think, ‘OK, it could have been worse’.”
14 . “Bach night before you go to bed, spend about 30 seconds writing down a good thing that’s happened that day, or a sense of appreciation for friends or family or health, or a negative thing that's no longer happening”, Wiseman says.
Also, don’t be a person of habit. Take a different route when walking, watch a different TV programme, speak to different people. 15 . And then keep your eyes open and get whatever opportunities might arise.
A. You’re passed over for a job
B. Even small changes can be effective

A
I live in a university dorm with a couple of great roommates. I have a never-ending flow of messages and updates from all the people I associate with online. Yet the truth of the matter is: I feel lonely.
I’m barely the only person who feels this way. According to research, over two-thirds of young people find it easier to make friends online than it is “in real life”. I’m way beyond a shy or reserved person, but I’m wired up every day, like most of my friends. On the surface, I have an active social life. I attend parties and play sports but I’m always distracted. They say that phones bring people closer together but in reality, my mind is always a million miles away. I obsess over exactly how many followers I have on my account, but I can’t remember the birthdays of some of my oldest mates.
16. From the passage, we know that the writer ______.
A. is a shy and reserved person
B. doesn’t have many friends in real life
C. cares too much about how many followers he has online
D. believes that attending parties and playing sports make him distracted
B
Most people assume that the human brain is set on “automatic”—that means it learns all by itself. But this isn’t always true. We need to train ourselves to be better learners—to actively take part in the learning process and to reflect on what we have learnt. These kinds of learning behaviours are called “active learning”. I suggest doing the following things to take an active role in your learning.
1. Listen to the outer voice
There are two kinds of voices: the inner voice and the outer voice. Your inner voice expresses your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about opinions from what you hear or read. Although your inner voice can be useful, it can also get in the way of learning. If you keep paying too much attention to it, you risk missing important information. Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker/writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying in the background. In this way, they are in a better position to make decisions.
2. Get to the truth
Active learners do not accept everything they learn. They attempt to find the truth at the heart of each idea. Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based on truth. So if someone says that dinosaurs still exist today, think about why they believe this. Where does the idea come from? Do they have enough data to support their views? If you try to find out the source of an idea, no matter how crazy it seems, you will increase your chance of learning something.
17. What do most people believe about the human brain?
A. It needs to be trained. B. It can learn in an automatic way.
C. It can’t help us reflect on what we have learnt. D. It can help us take part in the learning process actively.
18. Which of the following suggestions is for active learners?
A. Try hard to figure out the facts. B. Let the outer voice get in the way.
C. Pay no attention to what others say. D. Pay no attention to an idea that sounds impossible.
