“You should get a cat,”my therapist(治疗专家)said. “A cat?”I couldn’t even look after myself. I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a feline(猫科的)friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a fix for the fact that I couldn't leave the house without bursting into tears.
When my partner and I found Cinnamon, her adoption profile made her out as the perfect kitten. We filled out the paperwork and prepared for her arrival.
When she came home, it became increasingly obvious that Cinnamon didn't understand “no”, “stop it” or “don't do that”. She was the worst cat I've ever owned. I was beginning to doubt my therapist's advice.
After visiting our vet, she concluded that Cinnamon just wanted our attention. She fought tooth and nail to get a bite of our meals. She'd fearlessly lick sharp knives when left unattended for a split second. Cinnamon stole my heart with her bravery and kept me busier than I'd ever expected.
We decided to start taking her for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn't say no to Cinnamon. Cinnamon showed me what bravery looked like. She didn't stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation; she simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park, she would run toward it. She jumped without knowing where she would land. She loved adventure. I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.
Cinnamon unfortunately passed away after a medical accident. I'm no stranger to sadness or grief, but losing my pet so suddenly was the most confusing emotional experience I've had to date. She no longer wakes me up at 5 am begging for breakfast, but she's still the reason I get up every morning.
Our time is often cut unpredictably, unmistakably short. It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous.

We all know eating ultra-processed foods that make our lives easier-such as sauces, and frozen pizza-isn't good for our health. Studies have found they can raise our risk of obesity, heart problems, diabetes and cancer. They may even shorten our lives. Now, a new study has revealed eating more ultra-processed foods may contribute to overall cognitive decline, including the brain executive functioning-the ability to process information and make decisions.
“While in need of further study, the new results are quite compelling and emphasize the critical role for proper nutrition in preserving and promoting brain health and reducing risk for brain diseases,” said Tanzi, professor at Harvard Medical School. He was not involved in the study but he said in his book, “They, are, very high in sugar, salt and fat, promoting systemic inflammation, perhaps the most major threat to healthy aging. Meanwhile, since they are convenient and quick, they also replace fiber foods important for maintaining the health and balance of bacteria in your gut,” he added, “which is particularly important for brain health and reducing risk of age-related brain diseases like Alzheimer”.
The study, presented at the 2022 Alzheimer's Association International Conference, followed over 10,000 Brazilians for 10 years. “In Brazil, ultra-processed foods make up 25% to 30% of total calorie intake. colorings and other chemical additives" according to the study.
“People consuming over 20% of daily calories from processed foods had a 28% faster decline in global cognition and a 25% faster decline in executive functioning compared to people who. Not,” said study coauthor Natalia. Those in the study who ate the most ultra-processed foods were “more likely to be younger, women, White, had higher education and incomes, and were more likely to have never smoked,” the study found.

Adapting to technological advances is a defining part of the 21st-century life.Just two months after being launched in November 2022,OpenAI's ChatGPT has already reached an audience of over 100 million people. While ChatGPT threatens to change writing and writing-related work, the Mesopotamians, who lived 4,000 years ago in a geographical area centered in modern-day Iraq, went through this kind of far-reaching change before us.
Ancient Mesopotamia was home to many of civilization's early developments. Its people were world leaders in adapting to technological and cultural changes. They invented the wheel and agriculture, and pioneered advances in mathematics and urbanization. These breakthroughs are reflected in cuneiform(楔形文字)literature, one of the oldest known forms of writing.
In its literature,Mesopotamians don't present cultural and technological advances as consistently beneficial. They often represent new technologies being controlled in the service of human conflict and mostly serving the interests of those with high social positions. In some ways, the representation of new technologies in its literature echoes(映现)contemporary concerns about AI:fears of increasing social inequalities and its potential use in information war.
In recent years,AI-the newest form of writing-has been used to decipher(破译)the oldest: cuneiform literature. In broader fields, the boundaries of how AI may be used haven't been clearly explained. In January, for example,a top international AI conference banned the use of AI tools for writing scientific papers.
Humans have been struggling to invent, use and adapt to technology since our earliest civilizations. But the technology and resulting knowledgeare not always evenly distributed.
Knowing how we adapted to changing technology in the past helps us more fully understand the human condition and may even help us prepare for the future.
32.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning Mesopotamians?
A. Their adaptation to threats.
C.Their contribution t literature.
B.Their influences on writing.
D.Their achievements in civilization.
33.What can be inferred about technological advances from paragraph 3?
A.They prevent human conflict.
C.They take away people's concerns.
B.They bring about hidden dangers.
D.They lower people's social status.
34.What is the current situation of AI according to paragraph 4?
A.Its use in literature is popular.
C.Its range of application is undefined.
B.It is not allowed to finish papers.
D.It is not accepted in broader fields.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.How People Can Use the Latest Technology
B.How ChatGPT Will Threaten Writing and Work
C.What AI Will Do by Learning Cuneiform Literature
D.What History Can Teach Us About New Tech's Impact
Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym. 36.Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.
37 .For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.
A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on the fresh air, sunshine and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing used during the exercise. 38.Similarly,climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered a green exercise.
Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people's blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem. 39
Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. 40.Meanwhile,the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.
A.A green gym uses as little equipment as possible
B.Spirits are also believed to be positively affected
C.Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ
D.Green exercise includes a range of activities exposed to nature
E. So riding a bicycle in the forest can be called a type of green exercise
F.It usually doesn't use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym
G.Some point out that many health clubs are built to make full use of natural light

根据第三段“In Brazil,ultra-processed foods make up 25% to 30% of total calorie intake. We have McDonald's and Burger King. It is not very different from many other Western countries(在巴西,超加工食品占总热量摄入的25%至30%。我们有麦当劳和汉堡王。它与许多其他西方国家没有太大不同)”可知,巴西人的卡路里摄入量与大多数西方人没有什么不同。故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Those in the study who ate the most ultra-processed foods ware “more likely to be younger, women, White, had higher education and incomes, and were more likely to have never smoked,”the study found.(研究发现,研究中食用超加工食品最多的人“更可能是年轻人、女性、白人、受过高等教育和收入较高的人,而且更可能从不吸烟”)”可知,一位年轻的教授可能会吃更多的超加工食品。故选C。
根据第一段“Now,a new study has revealed eating more ultra-processed foods may contribute to overall cognitive decline, including the brain executive functioning-the ability to process information and make decisions.(现在,一项新的研究表明,吃更多的超加工食品可能会导致整体认知能力下降,包括大脑执行功能-处理信息和做出决定的能力)”结合文章解释了研究开展的过程、发现以及人们对此研究的看法。

根据文章第二段的“Ancient Mesopotamia was home to many of civilization’s early developments. Its people were world leaders in adapting to technological and cultural changes. They invented the wheel and agriculture, and pioneered advances in mathematics and urbanization. These breakthroughs are reflected in cuneiform(楔形文字)literature, one of the oldest known forms of writing.(古代美索不达米亚是许多早期文明发展的发源地。它的人民在适应技术和文化变化方面处于世界领先地位。他们发明了车轮和农业,开创了数学和城市化的先河。这些突破反映在楔形文字文学中,这是已知最古老的书写形式之一。)”,可知,关于美索不达米亚人,第二段主要讨论了“他们的文明成就”。故选D。
33.推理判断题。根据文章第三段的“They often represent new technologies being controlled in the service of human conflict and mostly serving the interests of those with high social positions. (它们通常代表着为人类冲突服务而被控制的新技术,主要为那些社会地位高的人的利益服务。)”,可知,从第3段可以推断出技术进步的“它们带来了隐患。”。故选B。

35.最佳标题题。通过对文章结构和内容的分析,再根据最后一段“Humans have been struggling to invent, use and adapt to technology since our earliest civilizations. But the technology and resulting knowledge are not always evenly distributed. Knowing how we adapted to changing technology in the past helps us more fully understand the human condition and may even help us prepare for the future.(自最早的文明以来,人类一直在努力发明、使用和适应技术。

36.根据上文“Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym.(绿色运动是一个术语,用于描述在自然环境中进行的任何类型的体育锻炼,而不是在健身俱乐部或健身房中。)” 因此,空格处应继续说明绿色运动与健身房运动的不同之处,F项“It usually doesn’t use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym(它通常不使用健身房里常见的健身器材)”符合文意,提到了“gym”,与上下文一致。故选F。

Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.(例如,一些人认为,真正自然的运动体验要求人只穿天然纤维制成的衣服。 C 项“Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ(人们对什么是真正的绿色运动意见一)”符合文意。故选C。

39.根据前文“The interaction with nature helps to lower peoples' blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem.(与大自然的互动有助于降低人们的血压,更新他们的思维,并真正地提高他们的自尊。)”
40.根据上文“Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym.(并非所有人都认为绿色运动比在健身俱乐部或健身房锻炼更有益。)” 因此,空格处也是在讲述健身俱乐部或者健身房的优点,G项“Some point out that many health clubs are built to make full use of natural light (一些人指出,许多健身俱乐部都是为了充分利用自然光而建的)”符合文意,其中的“many health clubs”与上文的“in a health club or gym”上下一致。故选G。

Text 10
The village of Wool pit in Suffolk, England has a strange legend-about two mysterious children whose skin was green. The tale is even stranger when you consider that it might be true. The story started during the 12th century when villagers came across two young children-a girl and a boy with green skin. Their words made no sense and they were acting nervously.(18)The children were taken to the home of a wealthy man, who cared for them. (19)At first, they refused to eat. The children lived with the man for some time, and eventually started eating. After they did so, their skin lost its green color. The children also slowly learned to speak English, and were then asked where they had come from. They said they came from “the land of St. Martin”. They had been looking after sheep when they heard the sound of bells and followed the sound to where they were found. The boy later died but the girl grew up, married, and had a child. So, who were the strange green children? The most likely explanation is that they were the children of Flemish immigrants whose parents had died. Perhaps they spoke only their native language of Flemish, which would explain why people thought their words made no sense. The green color of their skin was probably caused by a lack of nutritious food.(20)
