London’s four wonderful hotels
Here’s a pick of four wonderful hotels, each different in terms of size, style and location, but all performing to an exceptional standard.
The Goring Hotel
Since first opening in 1910, it is London’s oldest family-owned luxury hotel with the second-largest privately-owned garden in London after Buckingham Palace. The rooms of this hotel are smaller than those of many other London’s top hotels. There are 12 interconnecting rooms, which are ideal for families.
The Beaumont Hotel
This 1926 building, formerly a parking garage, has been transformed into one of London’s hottest hotels. Its art collection, personal service, elegant rooms and hot restaurant make it a favorite on our London list. There’s also an impressive 2. 5 staff to every person and a 24-hour doorkeeper to make sure that guests’ needs are met around the clock.
The Bulgari Hotel
This hotel has some of the largest accommodations in the capital. It’s very modern and huge with six floors below and nine above ground. It feels big, but there are only 85 rooms and suites spread over six floors, indicating how spacious (宽敞的) they are. The Bulgari Hotel has many child-friendly rooms and activities to keep the kids busy:a swimming pool, a cinema, PlayStations, Xbox and lots of other games. The Bulgari spa is spread over two stories. And the doorkeeper can also arrange babysitting.
The Rosewood Hotel
Rosewood is within walking distance of many of the city’s main attractions. From the outside, the building is large and impressive with an elegant courtyard designed for horse-drawn carriages (四轮马车). There is also a great spa and fitness center. As for activities for kids, there are food activities, art and wildlife. The doorkeeper can arrange trips to the London Zoo.

A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew.
One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home, he did not know where to plant it.
He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come all night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.
Finally he planted the tree in his woods where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.
Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. “What’s the difference?” the farmer said angrily. “If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit.”
“Yes,” said the friend, “but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!”
24. What did the farmer’s friend give him one day?
A. An apple. B. A gift. C. A young tree. D. Some apples.
25. Why didn’t the farmer want to plant the tree in his field?
A He thought his neighbors would steal the fruit.

26. Where did the farmer plant the young tree?
A. Near the road. B. On the farm. C. In his woods. D. Near the house.
27. Why did the farmer’s young tree die in the end?
A. Strangers pulled out the tree.
B. His neighbors cut down the tree.
C. His children broke the tree.
D. There was less sunlight and poor soil.

Currently, there are about 480,000 school buses operating today in the United States. These petro-fueled school buses alone contribute 5.3 million tons of climate-changing pollution every year. Replacing all school buses in America with an electric-powered model would be equal to taking 1 million cars off the road, saving millions of tons of pollution annually.
If schools in America were to swap out all of these school buses with electric-powered replacements, it would not only have plenty of environmental benefits, but also many health benefits for the students taking school buses every week.
Not only do these hundreds of thousands of buses have terrible effects on the environment, they also have harmful health consequences for the students riding the bus every day. Approximately 95 percent of school buses run on gas, which is proven to cause respiratory diseases and worsen existing conditions such as asthma.
“Pollution from petro-fueled school buses is harming our children’s health and contributing significantly to global warming,” said Andrea McGimsey, Environment America Global Warming Director. “Our research shows that whether they’re boarding the bus or on the bus, kids are exposed to poisonous air in high concentrations. Electrifying our buses is a common-sense solution for communities across the nation.”
These electric school buses are already available for schools to consider. They are cleaner, healthier, and often cheaper for schools to purchase in place of petrol-fueled buses in the long run. Electric school buses have zero exhaust-pipe emissions, which could help reduce kids’ exposure to poisonous air on a daily basis.
“When we put our kids on a school bus, we rely on these buses for safe transportation,” said Jeff Robinson, director of U. S. PIRG’s transportation program. “We have the technology to avoid these negative influences, so why wouldn’t we drive toward a cleaner future?”
28. What do the statistics in Paragraph 1 imply?
A. The benefit of riding school buses. B. The popularity of petro-fueled buses.
C. The necessity of limiting school buses. D. The urgency of using electric school buses.
29. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4?
A. The consequences of global warming. B. Students’ exposure to different diseases.
C. Tons of pollution caused by school buses. D. The negative impacts of petro-fueled buses.
30. What is Jeff Robinson’s attitude to electric school buses?
A. Skeptical. B. Cautious. C. Supportive. D. Fearful.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Problems of the Current School Buses B. Benefits for Students Riding School Buses
C. An Alternative Transportation, a Cleaner Future D. A Temporary Replacement, a Permanent Solution
D
How much free time do you need to be happier? Feeling overwhelmed(不知所措的) by your to—do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the magic elixir(灵丹妙药) like many of us have dreamed.
Researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well—being(幸福) —but only up to a point. People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. “While too little time is bad, having more time is not always better,” said Marissa Sharif, an assistant professor of marketing at The Wharton School. For example, some adults struggle with the “retirement blues”, which can be due to a lack of stimulation and structure, among other things. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things (like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV).
Study participants believed their well—being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively. “In other words, how people use their free time matters,” Sharif said. “Of course, what feels ‘productive’ is up to you. Free—time activities like knitting, reading, cooking or gaming are also known to put people in a state of flow. In cases when people do find themselves with excessive amounts of spare time, such as retirement or having left a job,” Sharif said,” our results suggest these individuals would benefit from spending their newfound time with purpose.”
32. What is the finding of the new study?
A. Adults tend to feel happy in their free time.
B. Being too busy threatens people’s physical health.
C. More free time does not definitely mean more happiness.
D. More and more people have little spare time.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The requirements of the experiment. B. The significance of the experiment.
C. The consequence of the experiment. D. The purpose of the experiment.
34. What is the meaning of the underlined word “excessive” in the last paragraph?
A. 明显的 B. 过多的 C. 合理的 D. 有益的
35. What can we infer from Sharif’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Taking good advantage of free time will help bring people happiness.
B. Attending too many activities may damage people’s health.
C. Spending spare time with friends often benefits people a lot.
D. Having little free time may result in anxiety.
