The most important life lesson I’ve learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.
Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.
I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life. Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.
I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.
I’m not suggesting we postpone dreams. Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it’s easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It’s a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.
Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run at your own way. Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need. In living life on our own terms, we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.
24.What motivated the author to participate in marathon?
A.Her eager interest in running.
B.Her strong curiosity for marathon.
C.Her keen wish to celebrate her birthday.
D.Her urgent need to enhance her strength.
25.What do the underlined words “this principle” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A.Setting a target time.
B.Finding your limitation.
C.Challenging fixed idcas.
D.Running at your own pace.
26.How does the author feel about being retired?
A.Nervous. B.Confused. C.Optimistic. D.Grateful.
27.What can we know about the author?
A.She benefits from the coach’s words.
B.She used to be a professional runner.
C.She sees the value of a reference point.
D.She’s suffering a lot from peer pressure.

When humans are feeling lonely, we can call or video chat with friends and family who live far away. But, scientists asked, what about pet parrots? New research suggests that these chatty creatures may also benefit from virtually connecting with their peers.
The idea for this study was not random: In the wild, parrots tend to live in large groups. But when kept in as pets, these social birds are often on their own. Feeling bored and lonely, they may develop psychological issues and can even turn to self-harming behaviours like pulling out their feathers.
In the study, researchers wanted to see whether 18 pet parrots could learn to make and receive video calls when they needed to help reduce loneliness. In the initial stage, the birds learnt to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on a tablet screen to start a call to that bird. Calls would only work when caregivers were able to assist at both ends. In the second stage, the parrots could choose to call other birds at their own will by ringing the bell then selecting the bird they wanted to call. During a two-month study period, owners said they recorded 147 deliberate calls between birds.
“We saw some really encouraging results from the study,” said researchers. The parrots seemed to grasp that they were truly engaging with other birds onscreen and their behaviour often mirrored what we would expect from real-life interactions between these types of birds. “She came alive during the calls,” one pet owner said about her bird, according to a Northeastern University statement.
The team has previously designed similar technology such as DogPhone, which allowed pet dogs to shake a ball to communicate with their owner. “The animal Internet is already here—there are hundreds of products on the market that let pet owners interact with their animals remotely over the net, but their design is primarily focused on what humans want, not what their pets need,” Hirskyj-Douglas from the University of Glasgow added.
28.Why did researchers want to teach parrots to make video calls?
A.To assess the effects of video calls on animals.
B.To train parrots’ communication skills.
C.To help get pet parrots out of bad moods.
D.To improve the relationships between parrots.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The subjects of the experiment.
B.The procedures of the experiment.
C.Caregivers’ role in the experiment.
D.The significance of the experiment.
30.Why is a pet owner’s statement mentioned in the passage?
A.To indicate video calls saved his parrot’s life.
B.To show pet parrots like video calls very much.
C.To show pet owners are satisfied with the study.
D.To illustrate the study produced positive results.
31.What is the difference between this study and previous ones?
A.It uses the Internet technology. B.It enhances human-animal interaction.
C.It satisfies pet owners’ needs. D.It focuses on animals’ needs.
D
Recycling is a great way of doing your bit for the environment and helping to protect the earth’s precious resources. However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable maybe doing more harm than good. According to waste company Biffa, this is because of “wish-cycling” — assuming that items such as disposable coffee cup sand pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. In fact, pollution from those items or other non-recyclables can result in recyclable items that have been put in the correct bin going to landfill. David Heaton, a business director at Biffa, said: “Pollution happens when items are disposed of in the wrong bins or haven’t been cleaned before being recycled.”
Experts at Biffa analyzed the amounts of non-target and non-recyclable materials that entered UK material recycling facilities between 2016 and 2020. It was found that, in 2016, the average pollution rate of recycling waste was 13.4 percent, rising over four years to 17 percent by the end of 2020. This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.
The Biffa experts say that one of the best ways to prevent pollution of recycling is to clean recyclable waste before putting it in the bin. They suggest cutting off the top of old pizza boxes and only recycling that part to avoid pollution from the grease (油脂). Check the on-packaging recycling label to check it can actually be recycled When it comes to plastics, Biffa recommends checking the resin code, the number in the plastic triangle, to know whether it should go in the recycling bin. In general, resin codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 are recyclable, while 3, 6 and 7 are not. Larger items, like electronics, furniture and batteries, can also be recycled but often can not go in household recycling bins as they need specialist separating. These will need to be taken to recycling centers or sustainable waste management companies.
“It’s vital as a nation that we get better at effective ‘pre-cycling’— sorting waste correctly before collection to reduce pollution rates,” added Mr. Heaton.
32.What’s the truth of “wish-cycling” according to the first paragraph?
A.The desire to lead a sustainable life.
B.The good intention to help recycling.
C.The habit of throwing items that end up in landfills.
D.The practice of recycling items that can not be recycled.
33.What has experts at Biffa concluded after their analysis?
A.People are becoming more eco-conscious.
B.Wish-cycling is on the rise in recent years.
C.Pollution happens less frequently in recycling facilities.
D.People are used to cleaning recyclable waste before putting it in the bin.
34.Which of the following is a proper way of recycling?
A.Dispose of electronics together with household waste.
B.Skip the step of checking the on-packaging recycling label.
C.Check the resin code of plastics to see whether it is recyclable or not.
D.Cutoff the top of old pizza box and throw the rest to the recycling bin.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Recycling: a Big Project B.Wish-cycling: a New Trend
C.Wish-cycling: a Growing Concern D.Pre-cycling: an Effective Method

Eight-year-old Kayzen Hunter visits Waffle House every weekend to have breakfast with his family. They always choose to sit in Devonte Gardner’s section, because they get the best care from their favorite waiter.
The family instantly felt close to Gardner, who would greet Kayzen with a high-five every time they entered the restaurant. Kayzen never needed to say his order again, because Gardner already knew it by heart. The family really believes he’s the nicest person ever, which is why they were eager to help him when they learned his story.
One day, while dining at the restaurant with his grandfather John Donofrio, Kayzen discovered that behind Gardner’s kindness and warmth were a lot of personal struggles. At the time, Gardner asked the pair if they knew where he could buy an affordable car to use to get to work. It turned out the waiter had been walking a long distance to and from work every day. He and his family, consisting of a wife and two young daughters, were living in a motel (汽车旅馆) room after their apartment became unsuitable to live in. They had been living in a motel for months.
Kayzen couldn’t erase his friend’s story from his mind, so he immediately told his mom about it when he got home. “We have to start a GoFundMe page and help Gardner get a car!” he kept saying. He didn’t give up on the idea until his mom Vittoria gave in. Their goal was to get $5, 000 in donations so Gardner could purchase a car. Vittoria and her husband were eager to help their son achieve the goal, especially since they had the same experience years ago. It took a long time to rebuild their lives, but they were able to bounce back. Now, they wanted to help Devonte do the same.

They now had over $100, 000 in donations for Gardner and his family. The money was more than enough for a car, and would enable Gardner and his family to move out of the motel and live in a more comfortable space for over a year. Soon, they thought it was time to let Gardner know what they had done for him, so they visited Gardner and his family on a sunny day.
Upon discovering what Kayzen had done, Gardner wept. He expressed his thankfulness to all the people who had helped him and his family. Now they had over $100, 000 in donations to help them bounce back. After renting a simple apartment and purchasing a car. Gardner went to work at ease and lived comfortably with his family. After he was no longer worried about his life, he thought he should put forward this act of kindness, so he gave the extra money to these who were in need like him, and he hoped someone would continue this great circle.

M: This summer I took part in a really interesting project. It’s called One-Day Clean-up and its aim is to clear the rubbish in the world’s natural environments. I heard about its work from my neighbors who used to take part some years ago. I thought it would be fun and persuaded a couple of my cousins to come along with me. But it wouldn’t matter if you took part on your own. You’d soon make friends with other people there. Most of the people there were teenagers. We were a very international group. Over half of the people there were from Australia, like me, but there were also people from China, Thailand and the USA. Most teams were working on the south coast of the country, but mine was working on the east. We had to pick up all the rubbish that we could find at the seaside. It has all made me realize how important it is for everyone to be aware of the environment. I’m determined now to get my family to recycle as much as possible. It’ll be worth it if we can make our seas safer for all those beautiful sea animals. So, if you’d like to join me in this project next year, it’ll be on January 11th. The focus on that day will be on getting rubbish out of rivers. There’ll be a day later in the year on cleaning up woodlands.

【答案】24.C 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据文章第二段“I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday.(我是在为庆祝60岁生日而进行马拉松训练时意识到这一点的。)”
根据文章第二段“All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation.(其他所有的跑步者都比我快,这让我很尴尬,但我的教练分享了一些宝贵的建议:用你自己最好的节奏跑步——设定一个目标或目标时间可能是一个限制。)”
根据文章第一段“In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.(特别是,它让我挑战了对退休和衰老的固定预期。)”和文章倒数第二段“Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it’s easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It’s a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.( 当然,我们应该做对自己重要的事情,但很容易将退休视为另一种需要达到基准的职业。这是一个比较陷阱,把别人做的事情作为参照点。)”和文章最后一段“Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at.(忘记别人在做什么。他们的速度不一定是你应该跑的速度。)”可知,作者受教练所说的话影响,认为我们应该按照自己的节奏生活,由此可推知,作者对退休持乐观积极态度。故选C。

根据文章第一段“When humans are feeling lonely, we can call or video chat with friends and family who live far away. But, scientists asked, what about pet parrots? New research suggests that these chatty creatures may also benefit from virtually connecting with their peers. (当人类感到孤独时,我们可以和远方的朋友和家人打电话或视频聊天。但是,科学家们问,宠物鹦鹉呢?新的研究表明,这些健谈的生物也可能从与同伴的虚拟交流中受益。)”和第二段“Feeling bored and lonely, they may develop psychological issues and can even turn to self-harming behaviours like pulling out their feathers. (感到无聊和孤独,他们可能会出现心理问题,甚至会出现自残行为,比如拔羽毛。)”可知,宠物鹦鹉会感到无聊、孤独,研究人员借鉴人们用视频通话来消除孤独的方法,看看鹦鹉会不会收益。所以研究的目的是为了帮助鹦鹉摆脱低落情绪。故选C 。
29.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“In the initial stage, the birds learnt to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on a tablet screen to start a call to that bird. (在最初阶段,这些鸟学会了摇铃,然后触摸平板电脑屏幕上另一只鸟的照片,开始向那只鸟发出叫声。)”和“In the second stage, the parrots could choose to call other birds at their own will by ringing the bell then selecting the bird they wanted to call. (在第二阶段,鹦鹉可以根据自己的意愿选择叫其他鸟,先摇铃,然后选择他们想叫的鸟。)”可知,本段主要介绍了实验的两个阶段,即实验的过程。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段““She came alive during the calls,” one pet owner said about her bird, according to a Northeastern University statement. (根据东北大学的一份声明,一位宠物主人对她的鸟说:“她在叫声中活了过来。”)”可推断,作者引用鹦鹉主人的话是为证明研究人员关于研究得到了令人鼓舞的结果的论述。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段““The animal Internet is already here—there are hundreds of products on the market that let pet owners interact with their animals remotely over the net, but their design is primarily focused on what humans want, not what their pets need,” Hirskyj-Douglas from the University of Glasgow added. (格拉斯哥大学的赫斯基-道格拉斯补充说:“动物互联网已经出现了——市场上有数百种产品可以让宠物主人通过网络远程与他们的动物互动,但它们的设计主要关注的是人类想要什么,而不是宠物需要什么。”)”可知,赫斯基-道格拉斯说市场上已有的数百种产品主要关注宠物主人的需求,而不是宠物的的需求,所以这次研究和以往的差别是关注了宠物的需求。故选D。

根据第一段中“However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable maybe doing more harm than good.(然而,一项新的研究表明,我们对可持续发展的渴望可能弊大于利)”和“this is because of “wish-cycling” — assuming that items such as disposable coffee cup sand pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. (这是因为“希望循环”——认为一次性咖啡杯和比萨饼盒等物品如果放入回收箱就会被回收)”可知,“希望循环”的真相是人们认为把垃圾扔进回收箱就会被回收。由此可推知,这是一种帮助回收利用的好意。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中“This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.(这表明,尽管人们越来越注重环保,但在家庭和企业中,“希望循环”的数量都在增加)”可知,近年来,“希望循环”的数量正在不断增加。故选B。
根据第三段中“When it comes to plastics, Biffa recommends checking the resin code, the number in the plastic triangle, to know whether it should go in the recycling bin. (当谈到塑料时,Biffa建议检查树脂代码,即塑料三角形中的数字,以了解它是否应该放入回收箱)”可知,检查塑料的树脂代码,看看它是否可回收,这是合适的回收方法,故选C。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable maybe doing more harm than good.
Let's face it, most of us are really busy. So busy that we don't make time for creativity. Even those who work in creative fields are probably at a point where true creativity is being pushed behind more pressing tasks. This doesn't necessarily have to be so. ___36___
Schedule It
Put your creativity tasks into your calendar-you have a very important meeting with yourself! ___37___ All you really need is about 15 minutes a day and that can really start to swing the pendulum (钟摆 ) in the other direction. I find that 15 minutes in the morning after a fresh cup of coffee is an ideal time for some creative work. You can plan a day to go out and explore something new to get inspired, whatever you feel is going to fuel your creative energy. Schedule these into your month, as well.
Shift Your Mindset
Like I mentioned, sometimes it has to start with your own belief. ___38___, then it's not going to happen. I found that once I redesigned my business to free up more time for me, 1 was able to really let go of guilt and realize that creativity is self-care. Even if it's not going to better your career. it's likely going to "better" you, and that makes it all worthwhile.
Make Space
___39___,but how about physical space? Is there a place in your home that you can devote to your creativity? Maybe it's in your office. You can have a spot with your art utensils. musical instruments, your favorite books. Or maybe it's in your backyard and you have a spot where you drink tea and practice writing. Sometimes it may be a corner of pillows in your bedroom that you snuggle in and listen to music. Having a devoted spot helps to foster it as a daily practice that you look forward to.
___40___
Just like all your good habits, you have to make them routine. Once you get used to carving out time and space for your creativity, you will wonder how you ever lived without it!
A.Be Curious
B.Make It Routine
C.It can be such a waste of time
D.But seriouslv, this really helps
E.We've talked about mental space
F.If you're not valuing your creative time
G.Here are some easy tips for making it a priority
本空前“Put your creativity tasks into your calendar-you have a very important meeting with yourself!”
由此可推断出,“反之,如果不重视的话(F项 If you're not valuing your creative time),就不可能有创造(then it's not going to happen)”。
根据下一句中的“how about physical space?” 可知正是与(E项We've talked about mental space)中的mental space相反。
分析下一段“Just like all your good habits, you have to make them routine”的内容可知,就像你所有的好习惯一样,你必须让创造成为日常惯例。
如第2小题,空前“Put your creativity tasks into your calendar-you have a very important meeting with yourself!”
如表示转折关系的but,though, however 等。 根据下一句中的“how about physical space?” 可知正是与(E项We've talked about mental space)中的mental space相反。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Upon discovering what Kayzen had done, Gardner wept.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】A local news station picked up the story, and before they knew it, more donations began pouring in. Soon, they achieved their goal, $5,000, and the number kept increasing.
