Photographer Lindsey Villatoro gave one family the most beautiful gift. She organized a fake wedding ceremony so that a terminally (晚期) ill father could walk his 11-year-old daughter down the aisle.
Jim Zetz, 62, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and knew that he wouldn't be around for all the big moments in his daughter Josie's life.So when Villatoro heard about the family's heartbreaking story, she decided to do something special for them.

It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner.A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held "Mothers' Work Days" to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace.During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe.In 1870 Howe published her "Mother's Day Proclamation", which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace.Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day.Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy.By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating."I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit," she said.

D.Because the day was buried under greeting cards and candy.
11.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

Beijing— The public has responded with vigorous support for an NPC deputy's proposal to extend the Spring Festival holiday from three days to 10.
More than 78 percent of about 27, 600 respondents to a poll on www.people.com.cn voted in favor of the idea of Li Jing, who is also the mayor of Meishan city in South-west China's Sichuan province.Li said the lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions, especially for the nation's 220 million migrant workers.
With hundreds of millions of people on the move during such a short time span, the holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism, she added. She suggested the holiday be extended and cover the three adjacent(毗连的) weekends, which means the public could take a total of 16 days off and floating population could spend the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the lunar new year, with their families.
People would then have sufficient time to fully enjoy the traditional holiday with their families, Li said during an interview with People's Daily Online on Friday.
Most online voters agreed that extending the holiday will ease the burden on public transport and strengthen family ties."The Spring Festival is an occasion for family reunions and should be longer than the National Day holiday one responder said in an online post.“Every year, I wish I could spend more time at home for the Spring Festival, but I always have to go back to work.I hope the NPC will approve this proposal."
Another online comment read: "Extending the Spring Festival holiday could prevent the annual transportation crush, which has in recent years resembled an exodus(出走) of fleeing refugees(难民)".
Most of the about 13 percent who opposed the idea cited difficulties readjusting to work after the break. Some pointed out that office moral (士气) was generally low during the first week after the holiday.“After the six-day holiday, many people come back to work feeling absent-minded,” one respondent said. Some who opposed the extension suggested adding the Lantern Festival as an official holiday.
Another 10 percent said lawmakers should carefully study the impacts before they make any decisions on holidays.
12.Which of the following is NOT the reason why Li Jing suggested extending the Spring Festival holiday?
A.The floating population could spend the Lantern Festival.
B.People could spend more money and this could promote consumption.
C.The lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions.
D.The holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism.
13.What was Li Jing's plan for the lunar new year festival holiday?
A.It could cover the two adjacent weekends.
B.The holiday would be from the first day of the lunar year.
C.She added the Lantern Festival as an independent official holiday.
D.The public could take a total of 16 days off including the Lantern Festival.
14.The underlined word “crush” in the sixth paragraph probably means "________".
A.uncomfortable pressure caused by a great crowd of people
B.a drink made by pressing fruit and used as juice
C.a traffic accident resulting from traveling too fast
D.people's eagerness to go home to meet their families
15.Why were some netizens against extending the holiday?
A.It was a waste of time.
B.People would not earn much money.
C.It would have a bad effect on China's economy.
D.People wouldn't be in a good working stage after so long a holiday.

Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms.He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, and then disappeared into the night.

More than 515 million guests have travelled to this American landmark from around the world since the park first opened to guests on July 17, 1955,可知,加利福尼亚州迪士尼乐园是1955年对游客开放的,经过对比可知,它是五个主题公园中开放时间最早的,故选B项。
根据Magic kingdom, Disney World, Florida标题下的The park's design and attractions don't make much difference from Disneyland Park in Anaheim.
Top 5 List of the Best Amusement Parks in the World" has come out as follows可知,这篇文章的目的是向读者介绍世界上最好的五个游乐园,故选D项。
When zetz's wife mentioned that Josie was upset that her father wouldn't be around for "memories down the line", Villatoro decided to help out.
Friends, neighbors, and even strangers attended the event to show their support.
Photographer Lindsey Villatoro gave one family the most beautiful gift.
    8.答案:A
根据第一段"but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner." 故选A。
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held "Mothers' Work Days" to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day.Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday",在19世纪50年代美国的母亲工作日,并倡导推动母亲节。
Ann Jarvis, ...held 'Mothers' Work Days' to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace"举办"母亲工作日"活动,以促进家庭和工作场所的健康和卫生 。"In 1870 Howe published her 'Mother's Day Proclamation', which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace." It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy.By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating.'I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,' she said".
It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented..."
    答案:12.B; 13.D; 14.A; 15.D
