The Nile River is the longest river in the world. It’s called “Father of African Rivers”. The Nile River was important to survival (生存) in ancient Egypt.
Egyptian people depended heavily on the river for drinking and bathing. The Nile was also an important transportation route (路线). Traders traveled along the river. They transported objects to other areas. Fishermen used the Nile to catch fish for food. Workers moved stones and other things for making pyramids (金字塔).
The ancient Egyptians created inventive ways of using the river. One important invention, still used today, is the “shaduf”. This was designed to get water from the river and move it so the water could be used on land to help the crops grow.
In ancient Egypt, the Nile River flooding wasn’t considered a natural disaster (灾难). Not only did the flooding help water crops, but it also deposited (沉淀) rich soil along the banks of the Nile. The soil was used to grow crops to feed the ancient Egyptians. The flooding of the Nile also helped ancient Egyptians survive by providing shelter. When the Nile flooded, it left behind rich soil, as well as mud. The ancient Egyptians used this mud to build mud-brick houses.
Apart from the river, Egyptians also depended on the “red land”. This was the red desert where nothing grew. It protected the people of ancient Egypt by separating the country from neighboring countries and invading (入侵) armies. The “red land’’ was rich in valuable metals and gems (宝石).

Chat GPT is a kind of a new robot that was trained by Open AI company in San Francisco. It is able to understand the human languages and communicate with human beings as well. By having dialogues with people, it is possible for Chat GPT to answer questions, realize its mistakes, challenge incorrect settings, and refuse some requests that are not very suitable.
GPT is short for Generative Pre-trained Transformer (生成型预训练变换模型). Its producer Elon Musk says, “Chat GPT is scary good. We are not far from dangerously strong AI.” It has reached 100 million users in just two months after coming out, according to the experts.
Chat GPT is a good talker and listener. It can become serious or humorous in different situations. For example, one says, “Tell me a lie.” Chat GPT answers, “The sky is made of green cheese.” Then he says, “That’s a bad lie. Tell me more lies.” Then Chat GPT says, “I am a human being.”
Besides communicating, this AI chatbot (聊天机器人) can also write e-mails and papers. It is unbelievable that it is good at creating poems and stories. GPT technology can even help people write code (密码) quickly and correctly. Maybe one day, it can work as a level three engineer.
However, some experts tell that Chat GPT may not be able to answer questions that are outside of its training data (数据). Chat GPT doesn’t change our lives completely, but it proves that the artificial intelligence (人工智能) has developed into a new stage. Do you think Chat GPT will take place of human beings?

Humans’ Greatest Achievements
The Earth is 4.5 billion years old, but the human race has lived on it for just 200,000 years. In that short time, we have achieved some amazing things.
Many of humans’ great achievements are in science and technology. The list is almost endless. The discovery of antibiotics (抗生素) has saved the lives of millions of people. 28 Can you imagine living without electricity? What about the printing press (印刷术)? Without the printing press, you wouldn’t be reading this. In the last 50 years, there have been great achievements in communication, such as radios, TVs, computers, the Internet, and smart phones. We could probably live without them, but life wouldn’t be as interesting.
What about the arts? 29 But are the Beatles (甲壳虫合唱队) and Bach (巴赫) more important than antibiotics? And is Mickey Mouse as important an achievement as going to space?
Finally, we must not forget humans’ early achievements. 30 We can’t imagine modern life without cooked food and cars.
What are humans’ great achievements? To answer the question, we need to decide what we mean by “great”. 31 Or is it just something that makes us say “Wow”? What do you think?
根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

Seba Stephens is only 11 years old, but he’s a very talented musician. He plays the drums, bass, guitar, and piano.
Seba grew up with music all around. Before he turned three, his parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday. “Drums!” he answered. His parents weren’t sure, but after seeing him play the drums at a local music store, they decided he was serious. They bought him a junior drum kit (成套的架子鼓). “He didn’t stop playing—ever,” says his dad.
But two months later, Seba grew upset. He couldn’t make the sounds he wanted with his junior drum kit. His parents bought him a professional drum kit and signed him up for lessons. In just a few months, his drum teacher reported that Seba was learning extremely quickly and needed a higher level of training. He was still four.
Seba started a band in kindergarten. In the first grade, he began earning money by playing music.
In 2020, Seba joined a summer music program at Berklee College of Music (伯克利音乐学院) as an 8-year-old boy. He studied bass in an online program. To keep up, he had to practice up to 36 hours a week.
After the busy summer, Seba made a decision to be home-schooled (to be educated at home instead of being sent to school) by his parents so that he could keep going to Berklee during the school year. He did schoolwork in the mornings. In the afternoons he worked on music. And at night he usually worked on music some more.
In May, 2021, Seba became the youngest person ever to receive a professional certificate (证书) from Berklee. The certificate is equal to about four college-level classes.
