I enjoy throwing stuff away. I'd love to go full minimalism (极简主义), but my wife and two teenage kids do not share my dream of a house with almost nothing in it. I have tried. When the kids were little, I taught them my two favorite games—"Do We Need It? "and "Put It in Its Place"—and made them play every few months. Their enthusiasm never matched mine.
If I'm going to be honest, my own tidying skills are not as great as I'd like. My "discarded" pile is never quite the trash mountain I want because I make up excuses for why things are useful. I consider this unhealthy. I want to be better at moving on.
So, this time I found help—the classics for people like me: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. Kondo's commitment to her craft is astonishing. Her philosophy is only to keep things you love. Can I go full Kondo? I will try. One central idea is to clean by category. You start by collecting all clothes and gathering them together for consideration. It makes you rethink how you organize. Next, hold each item and ask if it brings you joy. This way you're choosing what to keep. And that's how I find myself with all my clothes on my bedroom floor. My wife walks by and gives me a look that says I'm nuts. She's probably not wrong.
Somewhere near the bottom of this chaos is my special jacket. I move through the pile: pants, shirts, suits and shoes. Then my last category: jackets. I haven't worn the thing in about 30 years. Somehow, it has survived. Now that I'm striving to follow Kondo-surely, its time has come?
I hold it in my hand. There is a tear just below the collar that widens as I hold it. It's literally falling apart. Will I ever wear it again? Not a chance. Does it feel good to wear? Does it bring me joy? Actually, yes. At this moment, my daughter walks in. She asks about the jacket. I tell her the story. She thinks I should keep it. It's cool and unique and full of memories. She is arguing that nostalgia (怀念) is the very reason.
I'm not entirely convinced by my daughter's arguments. I believe in looking ahead, not backward. Nevertheless, sometimes it's hard to let go. So I gently place the jacket on the "keep" pile.

Research by the Policy Institute at King's.College London and Ipsos MORI showed that around 54% of British people will miss some parts of lockdown (封城),including family time.19% of the 2,442 adults said the last year had been better than they expected it to be when the first lockdown started.The research also found that 32% of people felt the past year had been similar to or better than usual for them personally.People have enjoyed being closer to their family,friends,and neighbours throughout to pandemic (流行病),with 28% feeling closer to their family,19% to their neighbours,and 31% to their friends.
Professor Bobby Duffy, director of the Policy Institute at King's College London, said: "There is no doubt that the public would rather the pandemic hadn't happened at all — but  that doesn't mean it's been all bad for everyone,or that people see it de influencing their future.What's surprising about the findings is that for a group of people the last year turned out better than expected,or even better than a normal year."
He added "Of course,many have been badly influenced.The findings draw attention to a key area of the pandemic,that while action to control the pandemic has been taken,its influence depends hugely on your own circumstances."
Almost half of the public felt the last year had been worse than expected and 43% expected its mental health because of the pandemic.
The research found that some people plan to continue with some habits they formed in lockdown,with saying they will shop locally more and 38% saying they plan to walk more post-pandemic.Gideon Skinner,research director at Ipsos MORI,said British people expect the pandemic will lead to long-term changes but bold different opinions on what the changes could be.
    8. What did the research mainly find?
    A. About half of British people would like to keep some parts of lockdown life.
    B. Most British people thought they were disconnected from their friends.
    C. Life during lockdown was better than British people's normal life.
    D. Lockdown was much worse than British people had thought.
    9. What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. The pandemic deeply influenced people's future.
    B. The public would miss some parts of lockdown.
    C. The public would prefer there had been no pandemic.
    D. The pandemic seemed to be out of control last year.
    10. What can we infer from Gideon Skinner's opinion in the last paragraph?
    A. The changes brought by the pandemic are still unclear.
    B. People will pay more attention to their family life.
    C. The pandemic is helping people form good habits.
    D. People are losing their confidence in the future.
    11. What does the author want to share in this text?
    A. Ways to spend time during lockdown.
    B. Bad influences of the pandemic on people's life.
    C. People's social relationships during the pandemic.
    D. A research result on people's life during lockdown.

An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising—though still limited—accuracy.Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities up to 73 percent of the time, researchers found in a study.
Developed at the parent company of Facebook,Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures, researchers report August 25 at arXiv.org.
Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to implant electrodes. This new approach "could provide a practical path to help patients without the use of invasive methods," says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King,a Meta AI researcher in Paris.
King and his colleagues trained a computational tool to detect words and sentences on 56,000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages. The tool, also known as a language model, learned how to recognize specific features of language. With the help of a computational method, the team tried to decode what participants had heard using just three seconds of brain activity data from each person. The team instructed the AI to match the speech sounds from the story recordings to patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1,000 possibilities. The correct answer was in the AI's top 10 guesses up to 73 percent of the time, the researchers found.
The new study is "decoding of speech perception, not production," King notes.Though speech production is the ultimate goal, for now, "we're quite a long way away."
    12. What is the main idea of paragraph 1? ______
    A. The principle of human brain activity.
    B. The limitation of human brain activity.
    C. The definition of the artificial intelligence.
    D. The new function of the artificial intelligence.
    13. Whom might the AI be beneficial to? ______
    A. People unable to hear.
    B. People who can't move around.
    C. People who are unconscious.
    D. People unable to communicate normally.
    14. What is the purpose of paragraph 4? ______
    A. To analyze the features of the study.
    B. To state the significance of the study.
    C. To introduce the process of the study.
    D. To present the achievement of the study.
    15. What can we infer about the AI from the passage? ______
    A. It performs well in the speech production.
    B. Its accuracy is far from the researchs' satisfaction.
    C. It will help patients avoid dangerous brain surgeries.
    D. Its language learning ability is beyond expectation.

    How to survive a stampede

At least 154 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a stampede accident that occurred at Itaewon,Seoul,Korea, during a Halloween gathering, local authorities said early Sunday morning. What should we do in case of similar crowding and trampling accidents? Here are a few tips to increase the chances of survival in an incident.
    Look for exits
If you are in a crowd,a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits. (1) .
Keep an eye on the crowd
    (2) ,as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger,a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escaping route.
    (3)
If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd do not fight against the pressure,do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get trampled.Move in the same direction of the crowd keeping your hands up by your chest like a boxer — it gives you movement and protects your chest.
    Protect your head
If you fall, get up quickly. (4) ,or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up into the fetal position (do not lay on your stomach or back,as this dangerously exposes your lungs).
    Move diagonally towards the exit
After you're pushed forward, like in a wave there's a lull(间歇).In that lull is your chance to move, and the way you move is on a diagonal, between pockets of people. There's always space between people.A couple of steps sideways, another wave surge, then another couple of steps in the next lull. (5) .

    A.Avoid any choke points
    B.Keep pace with the crowd
C.Be aware of the general atmosphere of the crowd
D.You don't want to be knocked unconscious in this scenario
E.You work your way out that way till you get to the periphery(外围)
F.No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out
G.If you can't,keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd

I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs.He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time,I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately,in the summer vacation before senior high school,my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips,so she couldn't take care of the garden.I didn't want my father to worry.I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered.I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often,so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning,my father said to me, "Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked.Let's have a salad today!" I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad,my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen.I was embarrassed and admitted, "Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster.I don't want to disappoint him,so I went to the store and bought some vegetables." My mother smiled, saying, "Honey, you know what is the right thing to do."

    Paragraph 1
My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.

    4~7.【答案】C、B、D、A

So, this time I found help—the classics for people like me: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. Kondo's commitment to her craft is astonishing.(所以,这次我找到了帮助——为像我这样的人准备的经典书籍:近藤麻理惠的《改变生活的整理魔法》。) The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up这本书是为了提高他自己的整理技能。故选B。

故选A。

Gideon Skinner,research director at Ipsos MORI,said British people expect the pandemic will lead to long-term changes but bold different opinions on what the changes could be.(益普索MORI研究总监吉迪恩•斯金纳表示,英国人预计疫情将导致长期变化,但对可能发生的变化有着大胆的不同意见)可知,疫情带来的变化尚不清楚,人们对此也意见不一。故选A。

An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising—though still limited—accuracy.Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities up to 73 percent of the time, researchers found in a study.(人工智能可以从大脑活动中解码单词和句子,尽管准确度仍然有限,但令人惊讶。
Developed at the parent company of Facebook,Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures, researchers report August 25 at arXiv.org.(8月25日,研究人员在 arXiv.org 上作的报告称,这种人工智能由脸书的母公司Meta开发,最终可用于帮助全世界数以千计无法通过语音、打字或手势进行交流的人。)
King and his colleagues trained a computational tool to detect words and sentences on 56,000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages.(金和他的同事训练了一种计算工具,以检测来自53种语言的56000小时语音记录中的单词和句子。)
Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to implant electrodes. This new approach "could provide a practical path to help patients without the use of invasive methods," says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King,a Meta AI researcher in Paris.(大多数现有的技术,以帮助这些病人沟通需要危险的脑部手术植入电极。
