Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass in Bahamas. They did it using videos shot by some unusual helpers: tiger sharks.
Sea grasses grow in water near coasts. They grow in thick fields, known as meadows (草坪). Sea grass meadows help clean the ocean’s water and provide food and homes for many sea animals.
Importantly, sea grass meadows also help fight against the climate pollution. That’s because they store plenty of carbon (碳)—the harmful pollution that’s making global warming worse, so it’s important to protect them.
But scientists don’t know the size and number of the world’s sea grass meadows. The meadows can be hard to discover, either because the water is too deep or not clear enough. And the ocean is so huge that it’s simply not possible to study it all by diving (潜水).
So a team of scientists decided to have sharks help with the research. Tiger sharks are huge, strong and deadly. But they are fast swimmers and spend a lot of time in sea grass meadows.
Between 2016 and 2020, the scientists tied cameras and other trackers (跟踪器) to seven tiger sharks. After catching the sharks, scientists quickly tied the cameras and trackers, then let them go again. The cameras were designed to fall off after a few hours and appear on the surface. The scientists found the cameras and collected the videos the sharks had taken.
“The project is important,” said one scientist, “as sea grass is important, we can’t protect it if we don’t know where it is.” The project also shows how useful large underwater animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea.
34.According to the passage, seagrass meadows ______.
①help fight against the climate pollution ②need to be mowed (修剪)
③help clean ocean’s water ④provide food and homes for many sea animals
A.①②③ B.①③④ C.①②④ D.②③④
35.The scientists use tiger sharks to do the research mainly because ______.
A.tiger sharks are easy to catch in the ocean B.tiger sharks mainly eat sea grass
C.tiger sharks can help protect the sea grass D.tiger sharks spend lots of time in sea grass meadows
36.The text is probably from the column (栏目) of ______ in a magazine.
A.Travel B.Health C.Education D.Science
In 2017, U.S. singer and actress Barbra Streisand lost her pet dog, Samantha. However, she wasn’t ready to give her dog up completely. She spent $50,000 and had her dog cloned(克隆).
Pet cloning, in fact, is now available for any pet owner—as long as you have about $50,000. Many people can’t imagine life without their four-legged friend. So the idea of “bringing your dead pet back to life” sounds wonderful. However, are we really making a good decision to have our pets cloned?
Clones aren’t created out of thin air. They need the help of several female dogs. First, scientists take certain cells(细胞)from the dead (or dying) dog. Then they take special cells from a female dog. The cells of the two dogs are mixed with each other. After that, scientists put the cells into another female dog. The cells will grow into new dogs. The dogs will usually be born 60 days later. Sometimes, the clones die shortly after birth. Cloning companies will try again and more dogs will have to suffer.
If you have ever considered having your dog cloned, you may hesitate now. Many scientists are against pet cloning. Some of them say cloning companies are taking advantages of people who miss their pets. Some are worried that if people clone their pets, they will never adopt new ones. Millions of dogs and cats are waiting for a home. Pet cloning, therefore, is unnecessary.
Companies that offer pet cloning services are selling a dream of never having to say goodbye to our pets. But this is an unhealthy dream, both for the pet owner and for those female animals who are used as tools. Losing a pet is sad. But why should we spread the suffering to other dogs just because we love ours? Why should we make our relationship with dogs all about ourselves?
37.How many female dogs are needed to clone a dog?
A.At least two. B.At least three. C.At least four. D.At least five.
38.Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word “adopt” in Para.4?
adopt V. ①to take somebody else’s child into your family and become his parents ②to start to use a special method or show a certain opinion ③to accept a suggestion or policy(政策) ④to choose a new name, a country, a custom, etc. and begin to use it as your own |
A.①. B.②. C.③. D.④.
39.What is the writer’s attitude(态度)towards pet cloning according to the passage?
A.He supports the idea. B.He is against the idea.
C.He has a mixed attitude. D.He doesn’t show his own attitude.

At school, we’re able to clean the classroom, water flowers and grow vegetables. What’s more, we can also help clean up city parks and plant trees outside.
As teenagers, we are supposed to take part in labor as much as possible, because it is not only good for our health, but also helps us to relax from hard work and improve our life skills. Let’s call on more people to join us.
