Every year, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies from Canada and the United States fly 5,000 kilometers to Michoacan in central Mexico. They arrived at the forest in Michoacan in late October and spent the next five months clustering together in the trees or the ground. The forest are orange and black in those months because of the large number of the butterflies. Sometimes, there are so many of them in a single tree that the tree branches bend or even break.
The forest are now protected by law, and the breathtaking views of the butterflies attract a great many visitors every year. However, the number of monarch butterflies is continuing to reduce mainly due to human activities.
Illegal logging (非法采伐) is one of the major threats to monarch butterflies as it destroys their homes. In 2015, some people cut down trees in a central area in the forests. They had cleared nine hectares(公顷) of trees before being stopped and taken to the police station. However, they were set free only hours later, though they should have been put in prison for five to eight years according to the law.
Another major threat to the butterflies is the use of herbicides (除草剂). Herbicides kill the milkweed--a kind of plant. A monarch butterfly grows on it, from an egg to an adult.
The number of monarch butterflies in Mexico has fallen by more than 80 percent over the past 20years. If we don’t do anything to protect the butterflies, we are likely to lose one of the greatest natural wonders in the near future.

Owls(鹰) are active mainly at night. They search for food when it’s completely dark. Most of us work in the daytime. We hardly ever see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much. Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. There are always some types of artworks or stories about owls. We can also find owls on company logos, in children’s books, etc. So, what is it about owls that makes them so popular?
Some bird researchers believe owls’ popularity largely lies in their “cool” looks. Owls’ eyes are unusual. Both of their eyes can only face the front, so they cannot move their eyes. However, they can turn their heads 240-270 degrees freely. They are far-sighted. That means they can see very well far away, but they can’t see up closely very well. Because of these, they can see things around from far away and search for food easily.
Owls also use sound to search for food. Their cars are lopsided--the left ear is a bit higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s face acts like a satellite dish for sound waves. Their mouths are small so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls become known as mysterious(神秘的) animals. Many cultures believe that owls are unusually wise. Like the light bulb, there are different stories about cars inventing. It largely depends on how exactly the word “automobile” means. The very first vehicle that could transport people, which was powered by steam, was built by a French engineer and army captain named Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot. However, it would not be exactly to call it a car, since it was used to transport heavy army equipment. Here, then, is a very clear look at the history of the motor vehicle.
Though the automotive industry was early controlled by American companies, the first gas-powered car was actually created by a German, Karl Benz, in 1885. About ten years later, Ferdinand Porsche invented the first hybrid vehicle. It used both electricity and gas. Interestingly, at that time, electric vehicles were more common than those which ran on gas. There was a problem with them, though. Their high cost put them out of reach of the middle class, and they were considered something expensive. That all changed with Henry Ford’s Model T car, which appeared in 1908 in America. His use of the assembly line (生产线), which he also invented, made it possible to quickly and, even more importantly, cheaply build cars. This enabled Ford to sell his gas-powered cars at a price that was popular with the general public.
Other American car-makers began to successfully copy Ford’s inventions and techniques, resulting in a huge, profitable(有利润的) automobile industry in the United States. Over the years, however, the quality of American-made cars began to decline, leaving the industry easily harmed or hurt in competition from other countries, especially Japan. Japanese car-makers began capturing (占领) the car market in the 1970s because their cars were strong, cheap and saving oil. Since 1980, Japan has been one of the largest producers of automobiles in the world. As for China, it is surely the largest producer of automobiles in the world nowadays.
( )37. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
①In 1885, the first hybrid vehicle was invented.
②The first gas-powered car was created by Karl Benz.
③Vehicles which ran on gas were more common than electric ones.
④The automotive industry was early controlled by Americans.
A.①② B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
( )38. How did Henry Ford change the automotive industry?
A. He improved the technology of hybrid cars.
B. He created the first car that was powered by gas.
C. He came up with a cheaper way of producing cars.
D. He helped make electric vehicles popular in America.
( )39. Which country produces the most automobiles now?
A. America. B. Germany. C. Japan. D. China.
( )40. What may the best title for the passage be?
A. The history of the automobile
B. The advantages of the automobile
C. The importance of the automobile
D. Different ways of making automobiles

第三节 书面表达(参考答案)
Dear Tracy,
I’m so glad to hear from you.
In my opinion, Weihai is a better choice for you. Here are some reasons.
You need to pay 1500 yuan for a return air ticket to Weihai. It costs 800 yuan more than taking a high-speed train to Xiamen for a round trip. But the hotel there costs only 50 yuan per night. It is much cheaper than living in Xiamen because the hotel in Xiamen costs 300yuan a night. In addition, There is a lovely beach only 2 kilometers away from the hotel in Weihai. It is 8 kilometers nearer than the one in Xiamen. Above all, the sea food there is delicious and cheap but the sea food in Xiamen is just so-so. It is much better than eating in Xiamen. So I advise you to go to Weihai and I hope you can have a good time there.
Yours
Betty
