A first look may make you think it is a seesaw (跷跷板). But people of the Yi ethnic group will tell you it’s completely different.
“Damoqiu (打磨秋) is a traditional sport and celebration during festivals,” said Li Jingming, inheritor of damoqiu.
The seesaw-like equipment for damoqiu is made up of two poles (杆). One 1.5-meter pole stands up on the ground. The other 5-meter pole, with a small hole in the middle, lies horizontally (水平地) on it. The hole is where they are connected. When playing, one or two performers sit or crawl (匍匐) on each side of the horizontal pole. They need to use their strength from their belly or legs to keep balance on the pole while doing different postures (姿势).
Due to its complexity (复杂性), damoqiu was listed in 2016 as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Longlin county, Guangxi.
“Many people simply play damoqiu for fun,” said Li, “Yet, taking it as a professional sport is more a game of bravery.” According to Li, since the horizontal pole only hangs on the standing pole, it’s always spinning (旋转的), making it hard for performers to keep balance.
Besides bravery, damoqiu, as a professional sport, also requires great effort and patience. Training for a new posture sometimes requires more than 10 days. “Repetition is part of our daily routine. Though it’s dull, it is worth our effort to keep the tradition alive,” Li said.
As more young people go to work in the big cities, they have less time to train on the pole. “It’s a pity that damoqiu is disappearing from the competitive stage now,” said Li, adding that he has only had five disciples (徒弟) for many years.
To make damoqiu known to more people, Li not only teaches it in schools voluntarily, but also performs in many competitions to show the sport’s charm.
“As long as I live, I will continue the mission (使命) of passing on the skills of damoqiu to future generations,” said Li.
23. What does Li think is important for playing damoqiu as a professional sport?
A. Passion and good athletic ability. B. Great effort, patience and courage.
C. Patience, creativity and energy. D. Strength and relevant previous experience.
24. What is paragraph 7 mainly about?
A. Young people’s views on damoqiu. B. The reasons why young people leave villages.
C. The current development of damoqiu. D. The difficulties of passing down damoqiu.
25. How does Li promote damoqiu?
A. By writing a book on it.
B. By performing it in many competitions.
C. By making it an elective course in local schools.
D. By introducing and teaching it to people online.

“The Great Wall symbolizes the firm backbone of China, while the Grand Canal is the bloodline that flows through the hearts of Chinese people,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum.
To get a better understanding of this “bloodline”, Zhejiang Art Museum is running an exhibition called The Grand Canal as Epic on Earth (“大地史诗——中国大运河主题艺术展”). It runs through Oct 11.
With a history of more than 2,500 years, the Grand Canal consists of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Sui and Tang Grand Canal and the Zhedong Canal. It stretches (延伸) nearly 3,200 kilometers and is the world’s longest man-made waterway.
Connecting the north and south of China, the Grand Canal extends (拓展) trade and shapes culture. As some sections of the canal have dried up and been disused due to historical evolution (演变) and climate change, however, some people seem to forget its cultural value.
China Daily reported that urbanization (城市化) has led to garbage and other waste to be willfully (蓄意地) piled up on the waterway by residents, while others have even built illegal structures beside the canal. All of this has damaged the scenic and hydraulic (水力的) qualities of the canal.
But just as Chinese President Xi Jinping once said, “The cultural relics our ancestors entrusted to us must be cherished (珍惜).”
Many measures have been adopted toward revitalizing (使恢复生机) the Grand Canal.
For example, in 2020, Yangzhou established the Grand Canal Museum, which displays more than 1,600 relics related to the canal and reproduces (重现) the natural landscape along the Grand Canal in the form of multimedia (多媒体). This allows people to appreciate its beauty. In Gucheng county of Hengshui city in Hebei, a new policy was carried out – a river chief system. A total of 70 river chiefs at county, town and village levels have been assigned to clean and restore (修复) 59 river lines, helping each section of the canal to reach its targets for reducing pollution and controlling flooding.
The Grand Canal is taking a turn for the better. There is no doubt that “the time-honored Chinese culture is capable of adding glory to it today and in the days to come,” as President Xi said.
26. What do we know about the Grand Canal?
A. It promotes trade at home and abroad.
B. It has shaped the culture of southwestern China.
C. It is the world’s longest man-made waterway.
D. Its cultural value is greater than its economic value.
24. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The impact of urbanization on the canal.
B. The necessity of garbage classification.
C. How to protect the canal from being damaged.
D. How the Grand Canal has changed over time.
25. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To recommend an exhibition to readers.
B. To stress the importance of the Grand Canal.
C. To draw public attention to our cultural heritage.
D. To introduce the Grand Canal and ways to revitalize it.

One of the most memorable volunteering moments for me was when I received a call from another volunteer who works for the Metropolitan Police.
“Loraine, I’ve found a pair of false teeth in the back of my car ... What do I do?”
“Well, give them back. I assume they aren’t yours? Who did you take home after the tea party?”
“Er, Peggy, Joan and Alan ...”
“Well, there’s your answer.”
“What do you mean? What should I do?”
“You’re the detective!”
I’m 62 now and always planned to volunteer with older people when I retired. I knew there was such a big gap in the care and support this generation receives and I found the thought heartbreaking – no one should have to feel lonely and stuck at home.
Since I started volunteering three years ago, my team of volunteers have set up seven groups in our town. We host tea parties for those aged 75 and older who live on their own and regularly provide support, friendship and companionship (陪伴) for the most isolated older people in the community.
Working with my older neighbors is rewarding. To hear their stories and the hardships they have overcome is inspiring. I feel like I’m making a positive difference to the lives of older people by sharing my time with them, helping them stay active and social and making clear to them that they are valued by our community.
As an area coordinator (协调人), I also help recruit (招募) and manage volunteers, without whom none of the work would be possible. So many go above and beyond what’s asked, giving their time, energy and kindness, just because they care. I’ve found so much enthusiasm (热情) from people wanting to make the lives of our older neighbors better, and they are a constant source of inspiration for me.
I’ve met so many amazing people from all walks of life (各行各业). It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done and it’s enriched my life so much. I will keep focusing on reducing loneliness and isolation among the elderly and helping older people enjoy the old age that they deserve.
29. Why does the author mention the call in the first few paragraphs?
A. To introduce a volunteer she works with.
B. To explain why she started volunteering.
C. To show she enjoys her volunteer work.
D. To describe a problem older people often meet.
30. What does the underlined word “isolated” in paragraph 9 probably mean?
A. friendly B. lonely C. helpless D. supportive
31. What does the author think of her work as a volunteer?
A. It is meaningful. B. It gives her confidence.
C. It is challenging. D. It reduces her loneliness.
32. What quality of the other volunteers inspired the author?
A. Their people skills. B. Their creativity. C. Their optimism (乐观). D. Their passion.

Since humans sent the first satellite (卫星) to space in the 1950s, scientists have been studying an important topic: how to grow food in space if humans will one day live there. A recent experiment at the Tiangong space station makes a big step forward.
Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings (幼苗) during the Shenzhou XIV mission. “The rice seedlings are growing very well,” said Zheng Huiqiong, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since the rice experiment began on July 29, the seedlings of the tall shoot rice variety (高杆水稻品种) have reached a height of 30 centimeters. The seedlings of the dwarf rice variety (矮秆水稻品种) have grown to 5 centimeters, China Daily reported on Aug 30.
While there have been other rice experiments in space, this one is the first of its kind to produce the complete life cycle of a plant – it begins with a seed and ends with a mature (成熟的) plant producing new seeds.
Such food-growing experiments are not just for astronauts. They can also solve food problems on Earth. By sending seeds to space, we can create mutated (突变的) seeds, thanks to microgravity (微重力), lack of air and cosmic rays (宇宙射线). The seeds can then produce higher yields (产量) on Earth.
For more than 30 years, China has developed over 260 new types of seeds in space. They are planted every year in fields that cover tens of millions of hectares (公顷).
According to Yao Tong, an engineer from Hainan Aerospace Engineering Breeding Research Center (海南航天工程育种研发中心), 30 percent of strawberries sold in Beijing are “space strawberries”, which are as big as eggs. The center has also produced “space tomatoes” with yields increased by 30 percent, and “space bananas” with a growth cycle (生长周期) shortened from 13 months to 9 months.
33. What does “this one” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The dwarf rice variety. B. The tall shoot rice variety.
C. The rice experiment on Shenzhou XIV. D. The last rice experiment in space.
34. How does the current rice experiment differ from other experiments?
A. Its seedlings have successfully come up. B. It goes through a complete life cycle.
C. Its seedlings are growing very well. D. It uses completely new rice varieties.
35. Why do we grow food in space?
a. To feed astronauts. b. To study microgravity.
c. To increase yields on Earth. d. To research on cosmic rays.
A. ab B. bc C. ac D. bd
36. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Space planting is benefiting us. B. Space planting has disadvantages.
C. People will never run out of food. D. People are afraid of food bred in space.

Dear Jim,
I’m glad to talk about short videos. Short videos have definitely gotten popular. But what’s special about them? People record something and add music to it to make short videos. They’re like a stage where everyone can have a voice.
Making short videos requires no professional skills. Any smartphone user can make one. They are also a good way to spread news or knowledge. However, we might get incorrect information from these videos. Original video makers may find it difficult to protect their copyrights because their videos can easily be downloaded and used without permission.
I think we should develop the ability to tell truth from lies and never follow trends blindly.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Jim,
I’m glad to introduce short videos to you. As its name suggests, most short videos are less than 5 minutes. Some shorter ones only last for a few seconds. They are easy and fun to make.
One positive thing about short videos is that they help record people’s lives. Through short videos, people can share interesting things, gain knowledge and support, or just relax. However, every coin has two sides. People might become addicted to watching short videos as well.
I think short videos can do us good. With their popularity, we can share our happiness with the whole world. It’s short videos’ popularity that magnifies (放大) the beauty in our life.
Yours,
Li Hua
