Pet owners are now encouraged to take their pets to Nantou Ancient Town, as the site is holding a month-long event called “Hi there, friends” with the purpose of building a pet-friendly community and increase the public concern for animal welfare(福利). My home is in Demonton near a river valley. It is a beautiful area that has been made into a park with meters of hiking trails(小路)along the river.
One day I discovered a trail I had never seen before. It was extremely steep and very slippery as it was covered with ice. I was alone at the time and even though I was terrified, I still wanted to go for a walk. Just this thought made my heart beat faster. I shook, not from the cold, although it was probably around -15°C, but from the fear I knew I had to do it.
I moved forward slowly and put one foot on the trail, then the other. Then I continued, one foot in front of the other. I went very slowly down the trail, shaking with every step. I was sweating despite my cold. I had no idea how long it would take me to travel along the trail, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to conquer my fear.
At last, I succeeded! At least that’s how I felt. I nearly ran down the trail. Well, not exactly ran, but it felt like that compared with my extremely slow speed in the beginning.
Maybe you don’t think this is much of a story, but I just want to tell you that we never know what’s around the corner. If you compare this story to life, you’ll see that we have no idea where life is going to take us, or how many easy or difficult trails there are to choose from until we make a choice! The point is: we have the freedom to choose!
16. Which of the following words can best describe the trail the writer discovered?

18. What do we know about the writer?
A. He liked taking adventures. B. He went down the trail with his friend.
C. He ran quickly along the trail. D. He travelled along the trail with fear.
19. What can we infer from the passage?
A. It was very warm that day.
B. The trail was not far from the river.
C. The trail was far from the writer’s home.
D. The writer had walked along the trail before.
20. What does the writer mainly want to tell us by talking about his experience?
A. Rome was not built in a day.
B. Things may not seem so dangerous in the end.
C. It’s worth challenging our fears and pushing on.
D. We don’t have the freedom to do anything we like.

By drawing patterns on the surface of a cup of tea, Chabaixi, an ancient Chinese tea trick shown in a recent TV drama, has gone viral for it is similar to modern latte art(咖啡拉花艺术). However, ten years ago, this special technique was close to disappearing completely. Zhang Zhifeng, a practitioner of Chabaixi, found scenes of Chabaixi in the drama aroused great interest among ordinary people, so he started to try his best to recover it.
Chabaixi can create endless patterns such as bamboos and mountains or even calligraphy. There are over a dozen steps from grinding(碾碎)tea for fine powder to pouring boiled water, stirring the mixture for thick froth(泡沫)and finally drawing the patterns. It is different from making latte because people use clear water as the object to put into the cup instead of milk. But when the water touches the surface of whipped(搅打起泡沫的)tea, it turns into a white color and disappears in 20 minutes. The process before the drawing is known as the tea-making technique, diancha, the quality of which is important to whether patterns can be successfully produced later.
Chabaixi is one of the countless forms of tea-making techniques in China. The importance of Chabaixi is that not only is this technique special in the world, but also gives us a window into people’s lifestyle in the Song Dynasty, a period of time when relaxation activities in some ways are like what we have now.” Zhang said.
“This technique is key to the tea culture of the Song Dynasty and it would be a shame to let it disappear. This technique must be passed on to the next generations so they can understand its history.” Zhang said.

A. The Song Dynasty. B. The Tang Dynasty.
C. In the year 2017. D. Nearly 30 years ago.

A. The beginning of Chabaixi. B. The special quality of Chabaixi.
