If you're reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs(00后).The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking,too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you're more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the“face-down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today's teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies(自拍)to become successful in real life-or“IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today's youth are spoilt(宠坏的)and don't want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by"helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra-curricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With partners who do everything for them, today's youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up?Well,probably not. The fact is that many of today's teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic(热情的)and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls' rights to go to school.
So if you're one of the oh-ohs,there's reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8(great) and LOL(laugh out loud).
    4. Today's teenagers are thought of as the face-down generation because
    A. They are busy texting
    B. They use their phones a lot
    C. They deal with school and family with their phones
    D. They become successful with their phones
    5. What does"helicopter parents" mean in Paragraph 3?
    A. Parents who prefer to live like teenagers
    B. Parents who often fly everywhere for their business
    C. Parents who do dancing, drawing or sports with their children
    D. Parents who always guide and help children with homework and extra-curricular activities
    6. What does the writer think about the face-down generation?
    A. They are annoyed.
    B. They are powerful.
    C. They are spoilt.
    D. They are positive.
    7. What's the best title of this passage?
    A. The face-down generation
    B. The young generation
    C. The generation gap
    D. The future generation
B 5. D 6. D 7. A
根据文章第二段“They think of you as the“face-down generation” because you use your phone so much ”(他们认为你们是“脸朝下的一代”,因为你们经常使用手机。)
根据第三段中关于helicopter parents后定语从句的描述“… who were always there to guide and help their children with a busy schedule filled with homework and after-class activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports.”(他们总是在那里指导和帮助孩子完成繁忙的家庭作业和课外活动,如舞蹈、绘画或体育。)
根据文章倒数第二段“Does the face-down generation need a heads-up?Well,probably not. The fact is that many of today's teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic(热情的)and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls' rights to go to school.”(“脸朝下的一代”需要提醒吗?
文章第一段最后一句提出“But what do other people think about your generation?”(但是其他人怎么看你们这一代人呢?) 故选A项。

Paper is one of the most important products ever invented by man. Wide spread use of written language would not have been possible without some cheap and practical material to write on. The invention of paper meant that more people could be educated because more books could be printed and distributed. Together with the printing press, paper provided an extremely important way to communicate knowledge.
How much paper do you use every year? Probably you cannot answer that question quickly. In 1900 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person a year. Now some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person a year. Countries like the United States, England and Sweden use more paper than other countries.
Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on a kind of material made of a water plant. Europeans used parchment for many hundreds of years. Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin of certain young animals. We have learnt of the most important facts of European history from records that were kept on parchment.
    12. What's the meaning for the word 'parchment'? ________
    A. The skin of young animals.
    B. A kind of paper made from the skin of certain young animals.
    C. The paper used by European countries.
    D. The paper of Egypt.

    A. More jobs could be provided than before.
    B. More people could be educated than before.

    14. When did the Egyptians begin to use paper widely? ________

    15. Which of the following countries uses more paper for each person a year? ________

I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.
    注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段开头语已为你写好,不计入总词数。
    Paragraph 1
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2
After the play, I took home the flower.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. “You just haven’t been ready for the stage performance.” Seeing the sadness on my face soften a little, she added, “Why not take the narrator’s part as an opportunity to be familiar with the stage?” Her encouragement calmed me down gradually, and I began to accept the narrator’s part was of vital significance. Soon it was the big day. At first I was still nervous, but then I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm.
    Paragraph 2
After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily at me. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I often recall our walk in the yard. Her smile and her words of wisdom have stayed with me and shaped me into who I am now! And this is perhaps the best gift that I’ve ever received in my life.
做好准备:be ready for / make preparations for
    ②发现:find / spot
    ③凝视:gaze at / stare at
①让某人冷静下来:calm sb. down / cool sb. down
    ②紧张的:nervous / tense
    ③高兴地:happily / with delight
I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm.
We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.
