What would you do if you spilled your coffee on your desk? Many of us would probably immediately begin cleaning up the desk. But some people are so talented that they can be artistically inspired by the most unexpected of things, such as spilled drinks. Case in point — Italian artist Giulia Bernardelli, whose amazing coffee art began as an accident.
Born in 1987 in the city of Mantua, Giulia Bernardelli graduated at the Accademia of Fine Arts of Bologna with a bachelor’s degree in educational studies, but it was a coffee accident that shaped her artistic career.
One day, Giulia was drawing and having her coffee at the same time. At one point, she moved her hand too quickly and spilled her coffee all over the canvas, but the way the spilled coffee spread inspired her to pick up the spoon and use it as a brush to guide the brown liquid. And that’s how her journey into coffee art began. She got better and better at it, and today Giulia is regarded as one of the world’s best coffee artists.
As for the things Giulia draws with coffee, she takes inspiration from a variety of things, such as famous artworks, architecture, or the human body. So the next time you spill your coffee or something else, don’t immediately clean it up. It’s your chance to be an artist too!
1. What can be learned about Giulia Bernardelli?
A. She hates cleaning. B. She is a fan of coffee.
C. She is an Italian artist. D. She wants to be a teacher.
2. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. What tools Giulia needed for painting. B. Why Giulia was the best coffee artist.
C. When Giulia became world- known. D. How Giulia started coffee art.
3. Which of the following best describes Giulia?
A. Gifted. B. Productive. C. Helpful. D. Brave.

And that’s how her journey into coffee art began. She got better and better at it, and today Giulia is regarded as one of the world’s best coffee artists.(一天,Giulia一边画画一边喝咖啡。

A woman who lost one leg to cancer is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon-length runs in 102 days.
Jacky Hunt-Broersma, who lost the bottom half of her left leg to a rare form of cancer in 2001, set her goal in mid-January. And every day since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon. “Part of my body was gone. For me the biggest struggle was accepting my disability,” she told the reporter.
Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, the carbon fiber blade she uses, which is designed specifically for running, costs about $10,000.
“Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself as a person with disability. It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”
However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Hunt-Broersma felt near breakdown at 24 kilometers and began to cry. In that moment, she felt like her planned goal might not happen at all. By dividing it into little goals, she finally picked herself up and carried on.
Hunt-Broersma’s main support team is her husband and their two young children. She is posting her progress online and has also got a large social media following.
As she nears the end of her goal, Hunt-Broersma is hoping to inspire a single thought in others: You’re stronger than you think and you’re capable of so much more.
4. What was the biggest struggle for Hunt-Broersma?
A. Fighting against cancer. B. Living with a disability.
C. Breaking a world record. D. Completing the marathon.
5 What might “the carbon fiber blade” underlined in Paragraph 3 be?
A A running aid. B. A sports skill. C. A training field. D. A support team.
6. Why did Hunt-Broersma almost break down one day?
A. She was not hopeful about her goal. B. She wasn’t supported by the family.
C. She lost a record breaking chance. D. She wanted a sense of freedom.
7. What can we learn from Hunt-Broersma’s story?
A. A thousand-mile journey begins with one step. B. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
C. Experience is the father of wisdom. D. Happiness is the key to success.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. A 7. B
【解析】

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“For me the biggest struggle was accepting my disability(对我来说,最大的困难是接受我的残疾)”可知,Hunt-Broersma遇到的最大困难是带着残疾生活。故选B。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线部分后文“which is designed specifically for running, costs about $10,000(它是专门为跑步设计的,售价约为1万美元)”可知,这是非限定性定语从句,先行词是划线部分the carbon fiber blade。由此推知,划线部分指的是“一种跑步辅助设施”。故选A。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中“On one recent day, Hunt-Broersma felt near breakdown at 24 kilometers and began to cry. In that moment, she felt like her planned goal might not happen at all.(最近的一天,Hunt-Broersma在24公里处感到几乎崩溃,并开始哭泣。在那一刻,她觉得自己的计划目标可能根本不会实现)”可知,Hunt-Broersma有一天差点崩溃是因为她对自己的目标不抱希望。故选A。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,再根据最后一段“As she nears the end of her goal, Hunt-Broersma is hoping to inspire a single thought in others: You’re stronger than you think and you’re capable of so much more.(当她的目标接近尾声时,Hunt-Broersma希望能激发其他人的一个想法:你比你想象的更强大,你能做得更多)”可推知,Hunt-Broersma的故事告诉我们:心之所愿,无事不成。故选B。
C
For one month, I turned down all in person activities with friends: going out for drinks, dinners, parties and non-work events, to see if it would make me more productive and improve my focus on my career.
Gradually, I came to enjoy the moments of doing nothing, sitting at cafes without any technology, and found myself daydreaming more frequently as I was no longer attempting to fill every spare moment. Such moments are linked to creative problem solving, brainstorming new ideas and reimagining existing projects.
However, such benefits would be a concern if I remained alone at home for too long. “For many working in an office environment, socializing is one of the most important parts and people with a ‘best friend’ at work are seven times more likely to throw themselves fully in their work,” says Silvia Bellezza, professor of Harvard University. Workplace friendship also creates a common sense of purpose and a social support network. Of course, off-hours socializing is also an important way to build work contacts. While one month of no social life did not impact people’s relationship with existing connections, it may have reduced their ability to build new ones.
During the month, I learned that I couldn’t cut out an area of life in order to lift another — a connection with people is linked to our work and helps us deal with life’s ups and downs. Researcher Ellen Galinsky has found that people who are dual-centric (兼顾的) are the most satisfied in their lives. “We find that people who are dual-centric tend to be healthier, do better at work and do better at home,” says Galinsky. Perhaps the secret to a successful career is not cutting out my social life, but combining the two.
8. Why did the author refuse all in-person activities with his friends?
A. To focus on his family. B. To save personal time.
C. To make new friends. D. To better his career.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The purpose of having friends. B. The benefits of keeping social.
C. The importance of remaining alone. D. The skills of building new relations.
10. What of the following may Ellen Galinsky agree with?
A. Social life should not be cut out. B. Most people are satisfied with life.
C. People should be devoted to work. D. Humans need close friends to enjoy life.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To show the value of social life. B. To give tips on career success.
C. To introduce some social activities. D. To compare some experts’ researches.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. A

It’s very likely that at some point, whether in school or elsewhere, you’ve come across pi, the mathematical term which is about 3.142 and most commonly represented by the Greek letter “π” .
Pi has interested people around the world for over 4,000 years. Many mathematicians — from famous ones such as Fibonacci, Newton, Leibniz, and Gauss to lesser well-known mathematical minds — have toiled over pi, calculated its digits (数位), and applied it in many areas of mathematics. Some spent the better parts of their lives calculating just a few digits.
In 2009, the United States House of Representatives recognized March 14 as National Pi Day. For Pi Day 2010, Google presented a Google Doodle celebrating the day, with the word Google laid over images of circles and pi symbols. The entire month of March 2014 (3/14) was observed by some as “Pi Month”. In the year 2015, pi Day had special significance on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. and also at p.m., with the date and time representing the first 10 digits of π.
Pi Day has been observed in many ways, including eating pies, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number π, due to a pun (双关语) based on the words “pi” and “pie” in English, as well as pies tending to be round, and thus related to π. Massachusetts Institute of Technology has often mailed its application decision letters to would-be students for delivery on Pi Day. Starting in 2012, MIT has announced it will post those decisions privately online on Pi Day.
12. What does the underlined part “toiled over” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Fought against. B. Noted down. C. Worked on. D. Broke into.
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Pi Day became official in the USA in 2010. B. Pi Day has become a worldwide holiday.
C. Google designed a Doodle for Pi Day. D. Pi Month referred to March, 2015.
14. Why are π and “pie” related?
A. They sound similar. B. They are both mysterious.
C. They are valuable in math. D. They are useful in our life.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Pi Day is gaining popularity B. People celebrate strange festivals
C. MIT officially announces Pi Day D. Researches on Pi are making progress

Father’s Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother’s Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time. ____16____ It was inspired by the actions of an American man named William Smart.
William had a happy family but his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. ____17____ No doubt it was unusual back in those days. His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realised when she was an adult what her father had done for his children. It was one day in the early 1900s, and she was listening to a lecture talking about the importance of Mother’s Day. ____18____
And so the tradition was born. It was set on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary (周年纪念) of Sonora’s father s death. Britain took the idea of Father’s Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s. Father’s Day is never quite such the big commercial event that Mother’s Day is.
____19____ Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have a nice message in it saying what a great Dad their father is. ____20____ Popular gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks. As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest — make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car to make him feel really appreciated.
A. Some people do buy presents as well.
B. What do British people do for Father’s Day?
C. But the origins of the celebration are American.
D. “World’s Greatest Dad” will be written on them.

It was a cold March day in High Point, North Carolina, with temperatures staying around 15℃. The girls on the Wesleyan Academy Softball were waiting for their next turns during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighth-grader Taylor watched her teammate Paris play. The two didn’t know each other well — Taylor had just moved to town a month or so before.
Paris was the queen of the softball court, with super skills of playing softball and strong leadership — almost all the players respected and followed her. Seemingly, Taylor’s coming challenged the current situation as Taylor was the team captain of her former school. So sometimes Paris just led the team to win the match, leaving Taylor behind on the bench.
The girls were training hard. Emma tried her best to make a good throw, which might seem foreign to someone just starting to learn the game. Anna kept her arm over her shoulder when she was throwing the softball. Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground and started shaking, with her eyes rolling back. Taylor realized it was an emergency.
It certainly was. Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. “ Does anyone know CPR? ”
CPR is a life-saving skill. To do CPR, you press on the sick person’s chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen the brain is damaging quickly.
Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn’t think she knew it well enough. Looking around, she found no one step forward. They all were at a loss what to do. Taylor was scared, too. But she knew it was the difference between life and death.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Taylor got up the courage and ran to do CPR for Paris.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few days later, Paris was back on the softball team.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Taylor got up the courage and ran to do CPR for Paris. “It was scary. I knew it was the difference between life and death,” says Taylor. Taylor’s swift action helped her teammates calm down. One girl called 911. Two more ran to get the school nurse, who brought a defibrillator, an electronic devices(器械) that can shock the heart back into work. Luck stayed with them: Paris’heartbeat returned. “I know I was really lucky,” Paris says now. “Most people don’t survive this. My team saved my life.” Experts say Paris is right: For a sudden heart failure, the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly.
Today, Paris is back on the softball team. Taylor will apply to college soon. She wants to be a nurse. “I feel more confident in my actions now,” Taylor says. “I know I can act under pressure in a scary situation.”
