Born on the 25th of February 1841, Pierre-Auguste Renoir was the son of a painter. Renoir took an interest in painting early in his life. His family moved to Paris in 1844 and encouraged him to frequent the Louvre where he developed an interest in the French Rococo style of Francois Boucher and the Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix, admiring their loose brushstrokes(笔法) and emphasis on bright colours.
In 1862, Renoir began studying painting under Charles Gleyre, whose other pupils included Claude Monet, Frederic Bazille, and Alfred Sisley. These artists would form what would later be termed Impressionism. Although Renoir experienced some success exhibiting in the Salon, for example his 1867 painting, Lise with a Parasol, he frequently struggled to gain acceptance within the strict structure of the Salon. Renoir along with Monet, Sisley, and Pissarro put on the first “Impressionist” exhibition.
The Impressionist painters often describe ordinary subject matter working en plein air (outdoors) to capturca spontaneous(自然的) moment. The style was characterised by broad loose brushstrokes, open composition and an interest in the effect of light. However, by 1878 Renoir had grown disillusioned(理想破灭的) with the impressionists’ emphasis on spontaneity. By the third Impressionist exhibition, his paintings, although still! displaying an interest in the effect of light, presented more carefully composed scenes such as Bal du moulin de la Galette, 1876.
In the 1880s, Renoir travelled to Italy where he came to admire the structural composition and under drawing of the Renaissance artists, in contrast to the en plein air technique favoured by the Impressionists. The trip to Italy had a crucial effect on his artistic style, moving his work towards more classical conceptions of draughtsman ship(绘画才能) and composition, as can be seen in his Luncheon of the Boating Party, 188l.
Pierre-August Renoir died on the 3rd of December 1919. Producing over two hundred works during his lifetime, Renoir greatly influenced later artists, ensuring his legacy(遗产) as one of the most influential artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
24. What stirred up Renoir's interest in the French Rococo style?
A. His father's painting technique. B. His frequent visits to the Louvre.
C. His encounter with Francois Boucher. D. His painting study under Charles Gleyre.
25. What can be learnt about Renoir's paintings in the Salon?
A. They met with insufficient recognition.
B. They were highly regarded by art experts.
C. They presented more carefully composed scenes.
D. They were heavily influenced by Impressionism.
26. What is a feature of Impressionists' painting?
A. Thin brushstrokes. B. Use of under drawing.
C. Structural composition. D. Stress on the effect of light.
27. How did Renoir's trip to Italy influence him?
A. It made him adopt a classical painting style.
B. It brought him considerable fame and wealth.
C. It changed his view on life and his attitude to work.
D. It improved his relationship with other Impressionists.

Three minutes of looking at red light once a week may help our eyesight (the ability to see), new research suggests. The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.
Last year, researchers from University College London did a study on red light therapy. 24 healthy volunteers, aged between 28 and 72, were asked to look at red light for three minutes every day for two weeks. Tests later found that the eyesight of people over the age of 40 improved.
To test the possible weak points of their therapy, they did a new study this year. Instead of using the light every day, they used it once a week. The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.
On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.
“We've found that one single exposure to red light in the morning can greatly improve declining vision,” said lead author Glen Jeffrey.
The findings do support their earlier work, and they might make the treatment more practicable, since a once-weekly treatment is easier to stick to than a daily one. But the team's promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.
“In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.
Given its low cost (as little as $15) per device, and simplicity, the team is excited about the future of their therapy.
28. What plays a key role in red light therapy?
A. The time of day for treatment. B. The device used in the treatment.
C. The time that one treatment lasts. D. The number of treatments received.
29. What makes it necessary to improve the study?
A. The age of the volunteers. B. The number of the volunteers.
C. The poor vision of the volunteers. D. The health condition of the volunteers.
30. In which column of a magazine can we find this article?
A. Travel. B. Business. C. Entertainment. D. Health.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To state the importance of eye care.
B. To explain the value of deep red light.
C. To introduce away to fight vision decline.
D. To encourage aged people to protect their eyesight.

Of the 8.300 million tons of virgin(原始的) plastic produced up to the end of 2015, 6, 300 million tons have been discarded(丢弃的). Most of that plastic waste is still with us, buried in landfills or polluting the environment Micro plastics have been found in Antarctic sea ice, in the guts of animals that live in the deepest ocean trenches and in drinking water around the world.
But what if we could wave a magic wand and remove all plastics from our lives? For the sake of the planet, it would be a tempting prospect-but we'd quickly find out just how far plastic has spread to every aspect of our existence.
In hospitals, the loss of plastic would be devastating. “Imagine trying to run a dialysis(透析) unit with no plastic.” says Sharon George, senior lecturer in environmental sustainability and green technology at Keele University in the UK. Plastic is used in gloves, tubing, blood bags, sample tubes and more.
Some everyday plastic items are also vital for protecting health. Facemasks-including plastic-based surgical masks and respirators(人工呼吸器) as well as reusable cloth mask—have helped slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. “A mask that you have for COVID is related to our safety and the safety of others,” says George. “The impact of taking that away could be loss of life if you took it away on a big scale.”
Our food system would also quickly come apart. We use packaging to protect food from damage in transit and preserve it long enough to reach supermarket shelves, as well as for communication and marketing. “I cannot imagine how plastic would be replaced completely in our system,” says Eleni lacovidou, a lecturer in environmental management at Brunel University London.
Swapping out plastic packaging would have knock-on(产生连锁反应的) environmental effects. While glass has some advantages over plastic, such as being endlessly recyclable, a one-liter glass bottle can weigh as much as 800g compared to a 40g plastic one. When those heavier bottles and jars need to be transported over long distances, carbon emissions grow even more.
It's clear that replacing one material with another won't solve all our our plastic problems.
32. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To give a definition. B. To report on a study
C. To introduce an argument. D. To describe a phenomenon.
33. What does the underlined word “devastating” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Interesting. B. Practical. C. Predictable. D. Destructive.
34. What is the second-to-last paragraph mainly about?
A. The advantages glass has over plastic.
B. The problems with replacing plastic.
C. The effects of plastic on the environment.
D. The different way store cycle glass products.
35. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. What if we stopped using plastic?
B. Is plastic packaging bad for the environment?
C. More recycling won't solve plastic pollution
D. Swapping out plastic for sustainable living

It was a pleasant New Year's morning. Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry, because he wanted to be the first to wish everybody a happy New Year.
He looked in every room and shouted out the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
It was freezing and dry outside and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, a she was cheerfully passing by. The man shook his head, saying nothing. “I wish you a happy New Year,” repeated Edward, feeling a little puzzled. The man shook his h cad again, for he couldn't understand or speak the language. “You do not belong to this country, do you?” asked Edward. Still the man said nothing, but this time he pointed to his mouth and to his children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these people were in trouble. The family were in great need of help. At that moment, he took out his dollars, looked at them over and over, thinking for a short while and finally gave one to the man and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which meant, “We thank you a thousand times and will remember you in our prayers.”
Without a word, Edward made his way home, delighted.
Paragraph 1:
When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought.
Paragraph 2:
“My dear boy, I saw you give the money to the poor German family,” said the father
