Your Garden Escape
Even in the big city you can find oases of calm and beauty. From a royal palace to a classical garden, we recommend great greens paces to escape the hustle and bustle of London.
Horniman Gardens
Horniman Gardens cover 16 acres with breathtaking views of London. Visitors can enjoy the Sound Garden, Meadow Field, and even a Prehistoric Garden, which features a display of “living fossils” filled with plant species that have been around for thousands of years. The gardens are very popular with families, and dogs can be let off their leads in the Meadow Field.
Chiswick Garden
As a classical garden landscape in London, it was here that the English Landscape Movement was born with William Kent’s designs. It is also home to the oldest collection of camellias (山茶花) in Britain. Enjoy fresh bread, seasonal food, and natural wines in the award-winning café, while admiring the beauty of the naturalistic landscape, spotted with impressive art and statues.
Buckingham Palace Garden
The 39-acre garden boasts more than 350 types of wildflowers, over 200 trees and a three-acre lake. The garden also provides a habitat for native birds rarely seen in London. A tour of the garden can be completed by having a cream tea in the café overlooking the Palace’s famous grassland and lake.
Kew Garden
The Royal Botanic Garden at Kew is one of the world’s most famous gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have a walk through the vast garden, spot local wildlife at the Lake, or get your hands dirty by trying a gardening lesson. Be sure to visit the Temperate House, which contains some of the rarest and most threatened plants.

In the live-streaming channel of Yang Weiyun, no singing or dancing is performed nor are products sold. Yang teaches pinyin, reading and writing, something that has been most familiar to her for the past 50 years. The difference is that her students are mostly adults.
The 73-year-old, an experienced and respected educator, had taught Chinese in an elementary school for 50 years. In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education attempt through live-streaming online. The retiree opened her live-streaming account in May 2021 and offered free pinyin courses designed for kindergarten pupils about to attend primary schools. However, she gradually learned among her viewers there are a lot of adults who cannot read.
Yang said she found many illiterate adults develop a sense of lack of confidence. They are afraid to go to new places, worried that they couldn’t teach their children or read their boss’s instructions. “Many illiterate adults didn’t have the chance to go to school when they were young. They are the ones in urgent need of becoming literate. I wanted to give them a new starting point,” Yang said.
To better meet their needs, Yang added targeted content. Considering the schedule of most adult students, she even held two sessions everyday starting at 8:30 am and 8:30 pm. Yang’s live-streaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy. Now she has nearly 300,000 followers on the short video platform Douyin.
Yang said students learning through her live-streaming channel each have their own demands. So she always prepares her classes carefully after concluding a live-streaming session. She has tried her best to figure out what ways the students can learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes.
24. What’s Yang’s original purpose when she attempted teaching online?
A. To help illiterate adults to read. B. To spread Chinese character culture.
C. To teach kids before primary school. D. To sell products in her channel.
25. What can be inferred about Yang’s main audience?
A. They have a hard time getting along with their boss.
B. They hope to improve their lives through such courses.
C. They are confident though they not well-educated.
D. They have little access to learning sources online.
26. Why did Yang’s live-streaming class become a hit among adults?
A. Her classes are carefully adapted to the needs.
B. Her videos are easy and long enough to learn.
C. She is an experienced and respectable teacher.
D. Her sessions respect the audience’s privacy.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. It’s never too late to learn B. Illiterate adults need help in education
C. A retired teacher helps illiterate adults online D. A video platform offers new ways of education
C
While a healthy diet has always been considered necessary for overall wellness, historically, many hospitals have overlooked its powerful potential for healing. In some areas, that’s beginning to change. In Pennsylvania four years ago, St. Luke’s Hospital partnered with Rodale Institute to start an organic produce farm at the hospital’s campus in Easton. Since its first season, the St. Luke’s farm has expanded to grow 100 fruits and vegetables on 11-12 acres.
Today, St. Luke’s sends all new mothers’ home with a basket of organic produce. New moms aren’t the only ones benefiting from the farm’s bounty, which is also served to patients, cooked up in cafeterias operated by the hospital’s six-campus network, and sold at nearby farmers markets.
Hospital farms are part of a broader movement to make organic, locally produced food accessible to the general population. Some hospitals are making it a paramount principle to source food from nearby farms, while others are turning unused land on their grounds into community gardens. By making organic produce easily accessible to the patients and visitors alike, these hospitals hope to inspire lifelong changes for better health. Even though most hospital farms aren’t growing enough to completely supply their staff and patient food needs, providing even a small amount of fresh produce makes an educational statement about how healthy (and delicious) a plant-rich diet can be.
While the farm-to-hospital movement continues to develop, it’s encountering some challenges along the way. For one, health workers don’t necessarily know how to grow food. This means that most hospitals need to hire a full-time farmer and other farm labor to manage the property, which can be expensive. It takes between 3 and 5 years for most hospital farms to break even, and much less save money on food costs. Nonetheless, participating hospitals believe that the benefits are worthwhile. In the near future, perhaps, you might soon experience a farm-fresh meal at a hospital near you.
28. What are the hospital farms aimed at?
A. Teaching patients how to grow food. B. Upgrading the hospital to attract more patients.
C. Making full use of unused land nearby. D. Offering healthy food to the public.
29. Why are “new mothers” mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show the benefit of the hospital farms. B. To present the popularity of hospital farms.
C. To stress the importance of a healthy diet. D. To prove the effect of organic food on them.
30. What does the underlined word “paramount” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Sufficient. B. Chief. C. Broad. D. Simple.
31. What is the challenge of the movement?
A. The rising financial burden. B. The inefficient management.
C. The public’s less-open attitude. D. The lack of proper workforce.
D
The time a person spends on different smartphone apps is enough to identify them from a larger group in more than one-third cases, say researchers.
Researchers analyzed smartphone data from 780 people. They fed 4,680 days of app usage data into statistical models. Each of these days was paired with one of the 780 users so that the models learned people’s daily app use patterns. The researchers then tested whether models could identify an individual when provided with only a single day of smartphone activity that was anonymous (匿名的). The models, which were trained on only six days of app usage data per person, could identify the correct person from a day of anonymous data one third of the time.
That might not sound like much, but when the models predict who the data belonged to, it could also provide a list of the most to the least likely users. It was possible to view the top 10 most likely individuals that a specific day of data belonged to. Around 75% of the time, the correct user would be among the top 10 in the list. In practical terms, a law enforcement (执法机构) investigation seeking to identify a criminal’s new phone with these models could reduce a candidate pool of approximately 1,000 phones to 10 phones, with a 25% risk of missing them.
Consequently, the researchers warn that software given access to a smartphone’s standard activity logging could make a reasonable prediction about a user’s identity even when they were logged-out of their account. An identification is possible without monitoring conversations or behaviors within apps themselves.
Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that app usage data alone, which is often collected by a smartphone automatically, can potentially reveal a person’s identity. While providing new opportunities for law enforcement, it also poses risks to privacy if this type of data is misused.
32. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain a situation. B. To confirm an assumption.
C. To introduce a new technology. D. To present a research finding.
33. What can we learn about the statistical model in paragraph 2?
A. It needed years to work out the results.
B. It knew well how the users used apps every day.
C. It only required to be trained 6 days by each user.
D. It could match users with their data perfectly.
34. How could the models benefit law enforcement investigation?
A. By cutting back on the devices needed in their work.
B. By reducing the possibility of missing criminals.
C. By narrowing down the range of possible criminals.
D. By offering more available jobs in law enforcement.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards app usage data?
A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Disapproving. D. Uninterested.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We’re lucky to live in an age when the sum total of human knowledge is pretty available at the click of a button. We’ ve never had access to so much information. 36 . So here are a few strategies to sharpen your critical thinking.
Watch out for confirmation prejudice(偏见). 37 . In repeated experiments, psychologists have shown we’re much more likely to accept something as evidence if it confirms what we already think we know. And we’re much more likely to ignore information if it is not in line with our views, which will affect our ability to process information.
Acknowledge small differences. In life, most situations are varying and complicated. Admitting that can enrich the way that we view the world. For example, what colour is the sky? Well, the obvious answer is blue. But at sunrise or sunset, it can be red. On a cold misty morning, white or gray. 38 .
Practise intellectual humility (谦逊). One approach to, well, arguing, is to let go of the idea of being “right”. Or at least seriously consider that you might actually be wrong. 39 . Really try to understand where the other person is coming from. Arguing is just to waste somebody’s time.
40 . It’s more important than ever to know where your information is coming from. That science-looking paragraphs might look very convincing until you dig a little deeper and find it was just posted by someone having no qualifications. That is the case we should not overlook.
Engaging in critical thinking isn’t as fun as picking up a pitchfork, or feeling like you’re fundamentally right. But in the long run, it leads to a more curious, educated and harmonious society, which is the biggest win of all.
A. Avoid mistakes
B. Check your sources
C. We all enjoy feeling like we’re right
D. But not all of what’s out there is quite what it seems
E. So pay attention to differences in many situations
F. So don’t rush to decide, and be actively prepared to change your mind
G. Putting yourself into the other person’s shoes can have more fruitful outcomes

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique (古董), which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hurriedly and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mothers face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” _________________

The Person I Admire Most
When it comes to the person I admire most, Tu Youyou pops up in my mind instantly.
Knowing thousands of lives were lost to a deadly disease malaria, Tu Youyou was dedicated to finding a cure to address it. You could never imagine how many setbacks and hardships she had been confronted with, but she never yielded. Through trial and error, she eventually succeeded in extracting qinghaosu, winning her the Nobel Prize in 2015 at the age of 85.
Undoubtedly, she sets us teenagers a very good example with her tough will and pioneering spirits, which, I believe, we are obliged to learn from her.

The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Though a little stunned, Ben stood straight and defended himself, “Mom, it was the cat!I promise.” Forcing a smile, the mother reached for another chocolate and passed it to the boy “A reward for your perfect repair.” Staring at the chocolates, the boy hesitated but still continued to deny everything. Before he could say anything,a third chocolate appeared in his hand, with his mom’s soft voice “And this one is for your bravery. You are brave enough to stick to your decision.”
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. It seemed that everything was all at Mom’s fingertips. Speechless, the boy felt a lump in his throat. He lowered his head in shame and stammered out the truth. “Mom, I’m so sorry that I broke your vase and lied to you. I was too terrified because it’s your favourite antique.” Relieved and delighted, the mother cradled him in her arms and whispered, “Good boy… It’s never too late to mend.” With the chocolate box handed to the boy, Mom said delightedly, “These ones are all for your honesty, my boy! Do remember that honesty values more than any antique.”

W: I think we need more potatoes for dinner tomorrow. Oh, and we need more juice.
M: OK. I know you love drinking orange juice. Let’s go before the store closes.
Text 2
M: Hello, do you have “The Best of Mozart”?
W: Um, sorry, we’ve just sold out. But we can order one for you. If you give us your number, we’ll call you when the CD arrives.
Text 3
M: Where’s Nancy? She said she’d be here by 7:20, yet it’s 8:10 now.
W: Well, she isn’t here. Why don’t you give her a call?
M: I telephoned her a quarter ago but there was no answer.
Text 4
M: I am so tired of driving all those hours to work.
W: Yeah. I know what you mean. I used to drive two hours to work each day. But now, I live within walking distance of my office. I don’t even need a bike.
Text 5
W: All right, sir. Have a seat right over here. Now, what would you like to do today?
M: Just take one inch of the top, and leave it short on the sides and in the back. Oh, and I’d love a hot shave as well.
W: You got it!
Text 6
M: What have you been busy doing recently?
W: Exams are approaching, and I’m busy reviewing the books to prepare for them. I’m buried in a pile of books these days.
M: You’re too serious about your studies! What about going for a walk this afternoon?
W: I don’t have the spare time as you do.
M: Oh, come on. Haven’t you ever heard “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”? Do you want to become a dull boy?
W: OK! I don’t want to be called a dull boy. Let’s take a walk!
Text 7
M: Where are you? We are all waiting for you. We’re expecting Rose any minute now!
W: I’m so sorry. There is a lot of traffic today and there was a major accident on the freeway twenty minutes ago. I am five minutes away.
M: I heard that a truck crashed into another car, which caused a big traffic jam. Are you Ok?
W: Yeah. Good thing I decided to change my route. My GPS system was so useful! I wouldn’t have known how to get around otherwise.
M: Did you remember Rose’s present?
W: I certainly did. I have it right here with me in the car. Is everyone else there already? I can’t wait to see her face when Rose walks in. Do you think she knows?
M: Everyone is here. I think we are all doing a wonderful job at keeping the party a secret unless you arrive after Rose! Hurry up!
W: Ok, Ok! Just make sure all the lights are off so she won’t see anyone.

M: Exactly. Now flowers can help humans in another way. Researchers say planting flowers may help people with mental health problems.
W: Really? Can we call it “Flower Therapy”?
M: Yes! In fact, the U.S. government once had a program that taught soldiers returning from the First World War how to plant flowers.
W: I know many soldiers have trouble dealing with the experiences of war.
M: The program is not a new thing. Other countries also have similar programs.
W: I will plant some flowers in our yard.
M: Put your chair out, enjoy the sunshine and watch the flowers. It’s really relaxing, right?
W: Yes! That is what I want.

W: Thank you for helping me this weekend, Dave. I know three pets are a lot to handle.
M: No problem. You would do the same for me. So what do I need to know?
W: This is Buster. He likes his spot under the dinner table. Cutie is probably sleeping on my pillow right now, and Chee-Chee is in the cage by the fridge.
M: Got it. What about their eating schedules?
W: Buster eats in the morning, afternoon and evening. Cutie is usually outside all afternoon catching mice. Feed her one bowl for breakfast and dinner. Chee-Chee is easy. He just cats seeds.
M: Is there anything else I need to know?
W: Don’t worry if you can’t find Cutie. She goes in and out of the window whenever she wants. With Buster, you need to take him for a few walks per day. There’s a park nearby, and I usually take him around the path once a day.
M: I don’t mind. I could take advantage of the exercise. So when are you leaving?
W: Saturday morning. I fly home Tuesday night, yet I won’t arrive home until the following day. So you’ll be all right?
M: Of course. Have a good time on your trip!

W: A hero schoolgirl saved many people stuck in a burning apartment. When interviewed, she said she was inspired by a TV show about emergency services.
14-year-old Lily Swanson is a big fan of the Disney+TV program 9-1-1, so when she noticed a strong burning smell, she instantly stopped to check out.
She had been on a walk with her dog near her home in Leyland, Lancashire. But she decided to try and find the source of the smell. The quick-thinking teenager looked around and finally spotted black smoke coming out of the window of an apartment on Hough Lane.
Lily ran home to wake her dad Mike Swanson and rang 911. As soon as they called the fire station, they ran back outside and saw people hanging out of the window. Mike grabbed his ladder and ran to the scene to help those trapped inside before the fire swept the whole building.
