I first “met” Wang Jian through the documentary From Mao to Mozart, an award-winning account of the musical journey taken by violinist Isaac Stern through China in 1979. In it, eleven-year-old Wang Jian performed in front of one of the most famous artists in the world with confidence and focus. It was a memorable experience.
Many years later, as I was looking through the Haydn section in a record shop one day, an unforgettable face on a CD cover caught my eye. I immediately recognised it as Wang Jian's and it was quite unexpected. His eyes had remained very much the same as those of the little boy on the stage some twenty years ago. As I was a lover of Cello ( 大 提 琴 ) Concertos, needless to say, his recordings became my favourite.
I was very lucky to find myself a passenger on the same Music Cruise Wang Jian was performing on a few years ago. I still remember experiencing his performance of Schubert's Arpeggione during a stormy crossing of the Mediterranean. My stomach was trying to deal with the ups and downs of the sea, while he fought his own discomfort by sinking ( 使 沉 入) himself in his performance. Of course, it is the best Arpeggione I have ever heard.
I was once told that an artist can be an extremely different person from the music he or she plays. I used to doubt that, but after several experiences, I've reconsidered this opinion. I still remember a Russian pianist, extremely talented, with whom I had a drink following his concert. The memory of his superficial (肤浅的) conversation paired with rude laughter still frightens me.
But Wang Jian is different. I found him to be just the person his beautiful music would suggest. He plays in a simple, clean and sincere way. Despite his success and fame ( 名 声), he remains simple, friendly, and generous — a real gentleman and a well-respected artist.
    24. How did the author first know of Wang Jian?
    A. He came across him in a journey. B. He learned about him from a film.
    C. He met him at an award ceremony. D. He read about him in a violinist's story.
    25. How did the author feel when he saw Wang Jian's CD?
    A. Proud. B. Surprised. C. Curious. D. Doubtful.
    26. What quality of Wang Jian impressed the author on the Music Cruise?
    A. His generosity. B. His confidence. C. His concentration. D. His friendliness.
    27. What does the author want to express in the last two paragraphs?
    A. Wang Jian will win more popularity. B. The pianist is not so talented as Wang Jian.
    C. We should never judge an artist by his looks. D. Wang Jian's characters are as good as his music.

    C
SOURCE Global is one of the many companies around the world harvesting water from the air. Named Hydropanels, its devices are powered by built-in solar panels (太阳能电池板).
Atmospheric water generators (AWGs), like SOURCE's, are machines that produce water from the surrounding air. These devices have been around for about ten years and traditionally they're based on condensation — cooling water vapor (蒸汽) to collect water drops. This process, however, can use a lot of electricity and only work in places with a high amount of water contained in the air. These are what caused SOURCE to develop a more flexible and practical solution.
Its solar panels power a fan that draws in the air. Inside the device, the air travels through a special material that traps the water vapor to produce water. As it is collected, chemical elements, magnesium and calcium, are added to the water to improve its taste and provide possible health benefits.
In Dubai, where the company's largest water farm is located, it produces 1.5 million liters of water every year. SOURCE has fixed its Hydropanels around the world at hospitals, schools and worksites that have difficulties accessing water. SOURCE plans to create a plastic-free bottled water brand (品牌) and sell it to hotels and holiday centers at about the same price as other bottled water brands. Its next partnership will be in Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, where a development company is aiming to build 18 hotels that will serve SOURCE's water.
Over 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress and while many companies working on AWGs hope their devices will help solve this problem, that would be unlikely, according to Keith Hays with Bluefield Research, a company that addresses water challenges. High upfront costs mean it takes around 10 years for AWGs to be cost-competitive, he says and they generally produce a small part of the water that a well or seawater desalination (脱盐) system can supply. Vahid Fotuhi with SOURCE understands the challenges, but he says that Hydropanels help reduce the use of plastics and the environmental footprint, and their selling points remain strong.
    28. What does the underlined word “These” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. The disadvantages of using electricity. B. The expectations of future growth.
    C. The features of condensation. D. The limitations of AWGs.
    29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. The working process of Hydropanels. B. The need for water collected from the air.
    C. The importance of applying renewable energy. D. The reason for adding chemical elements to water.
    30. What is one of SOURCE's plans?
    A. To create a brand to sell plastic-free bottled water. B. To build 18 hotels equipped with Hydropanels.
    C. To produce 1.5 million liters of water every year. D. To fix its Hydropanels at hospitals and schools.
    31. What does Vahid Fotuhi think of Hydropanels?
    A. They are highly competitive in price. B. They produce fresher water than wells.
    C. They offer clear environmental benefits. D. They play a key role in reducing water stress.

    D
Music streaming platforms (平台) such as Spotify and Apple Music have completely changed how people listen to music nowadays. By paying very affordable prices, people can access music very easily. However, while these platforms may provide benefits for some artists, up-and-coming artists are being left behind because they only focus on big names and creating profits.
Because of COVID-19, musicians have not been able to tour or perform live in many countries, which contributes to a large part of their income. In a YouTube interview, up-and-coming Texas artist Mobey mentioned that “The majority of my income comes from playing live shows. Usually that means around 50%-70% of what we expect to make in a year”. With these factors, small artists are finding it increasingly difficult to make it in the industry due to the lack of investment (投资) into new talent.
Small artists on Spotify and Apple Music can expect to make little to nothing. An artist on Spotify can expect to earn an average of $0.003 per stream or around $3 per 1, 000 streams for one of their songs. On Apple Music, artists can expect to make a little more with an average of $0.01 per stream, or around $10 with 1, 000 streams. Even if they could hit around 1,000 streams, they have to pay music distribution ( 分 发 ) platforms needed for their music to be shown on the streaming platforms such as DistroKid, whose cheapest plan is $20.
A new artist would find it very difficult to promote their music outside of their social media accounts which may not even have a large amount of followers. They probably cannot get large amounts of streams on their music since it is not being promoted due to the lack of exposure (宣传) they have on social media.
With the takeover of music streaming platforms, many artists are finding it increasingly difficult to make a sustainable (可持续的) living from their love for music. A simple way these platforms can enable new artists to keep making music is to increase their payouts per stream for their music. Hopefully the music streaming industry will make similar changes to improve the situation of their artists.
    32. What is the problem with music streaming platforms?
    A. They ignore small artists. B. They are not user-friendly.
    C. They are very difficult to manage. D. They limit the number of small artists' songs.
    33. What do artist Mobey's words center on?
    A. His lack of investment. B. His total income in a year.
    C. The main source of his income. D. The reason for his fewer live shows.
    34. What do the figures in paragraph 3 show?
    A. How a music streaming platform works. B. Small artists' hope for music streaming platforms.
    C. Small artists' dislike for music streaming platforms. D. Why small artists earn little on music streaming platforms.
    35. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Music streaming platforms: Do they really put profits first?
    B. Music streaming platforms: Are they a chance or challenge to artists?
    C. Music streaming platforms: Have they harmed the industry for artists?
    D. Music streaming platforms: Could they offer music lovers better services?

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In 2009 in southern Germany, people uncovered a flute (长笛) made of an animal's wing bone. The delicate instrument is one of the oldest known musical instruments on the Earth, indicating that people have been making music for over 40,000 years. We can't be sure exactly when human beings began listening to music. 36 Here's what their research tells us about the power of music.
Doctors at Johns Hopkins University recommend that you listen to music to stimulate your brain. They have found that listening to music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human activity. 37 Besides, just the promise of listening to music can make you want to learn more. In one 2019 study, people were more eager to learn when they expected to listen to a song as their reward.
Music also has a positive effect on your ability to memorize. 38 They found those who were listening to classical music outperformed those who worked in silence or with white noise. The same study also tracked how fast people could perform a simple task — matching numbers to shapes. 39 The music of Mozart helped people complete the task faster and more accurately (精确地).
40 Neurological (神经学的) researchers have found that listening to music encourages the release (释放) of several neurochemicals that play a role in brain function and mental health like dopamine, a chemical associated with pleasure, and serotonin, a chemical related to immunity.
    A. A similar benefit showed up.
    B. Music can relieve physical pain.
    C. Music can help treat mental illness.
    D. But scientists do know something about why we do.
    E. That's why they see so much potential in music's power to change the brain.
    F. In one study, researchers asked people to read and then recall short lists of words.
    G. But the idea that music can be used for health is increasingly grounded in scientific evidence.

    第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
    阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The theremin ( 特雷门电子琴) 56 (know) as one of the strangest instruments in the world. It was invented by Russian physicist Lev Sergeyevich Termen. In 1919, he invented a machine that aimed 57 (use) the newly invented technology of radio waves to measure some properties of gases. But he found his equipment made a strange sound, 58 he could change by moving his hands around the equipment. A(n) 59 (train) musician, Theremin recognised the potential of his discovery.
Theremin transformed the electronic equipment 60 a musical instrument and showed it for Albert Einstein, before 61 (surprise) audiences worldwide in the late 1920s.
62 is very hard to play the theremin well. There 63 (be) no keyboard or fretboard ( 指板). The 64 (play) needs a brilliant ear to hit specific notes and combine relaxed body movements with intense mental focus. This explains why there are so few theremin 65 (master) in the world, as well as why each has their own style of performance — just as there are many ways an actor can play Hamlet.

    A Chair for My Mother
My mother works as a waitress in the Blue Tile Diner. After school sometimes I go to meet her there. Then her boss Josephine gives me a job too. When I finish, Josephine says, “Good work, honey,” and pays me. And every time, I put half of my money into the jar (罐子).
It takes a long time to fill a jar this big. Every day when my mother comes home from work, I take down the jar. My mama empties all her change from tips for me to count. Then we push all of the coins into the jar.
Sometimes my mama is laughing when she comes home from work. Sometimes she's so tired she falls asleep while I count the money. Some days she has lots of tips. Some days she has only a few. Then she looks worried. But each evening every single shiny coin goes into the jar.
We sit in the kitchen to count the tips. Usually Grandma sits with us too. Often she has money in her old wallet for us. Whenever she gets a good bargain (划算的交易) on tomatoes or bananas or something she buys, she puts by the savings and they go into the jar.
When we can't get a single other coin into the jar, we are going to take out all the money and go and buy a chair. Yes, a chair. A wonderful, beautiful, fat, soft armchair for Mama and Grandma. When Mama comes home, her feet hurt. “There's no good place for me to rest my feet,” she says. When Grandma wants to sit back and cut up potatoes, she has to get as comfortable as she can on a hard kitchen chair.
So that is how come Mama brought home the biggest jar she could find and all the coins started to go into the jar.
    Paragraph 1:
Now the jar is too heavy for me to lift down.

    Paragraph 2:
Finally we find the chair we are all dreaming of.

    第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
    Paragraph 1:
Now the jar is too heavy for me to lift down. After supper Mama, Grandma and I stand in front of the jar. “Well, I never would have believed it, but I guess it's full,” Mama says. On my mother's day off, we take all the coins to the bank. The bank exchanges them for ten-dollar bills. Then we take the bus downtown to shop for our chair. We shop through four stores. We try out big chairs and smaller ones, high chairs and low chairs, soft chairs and harder ones.
    Paragraph 2:
Finally we find the chair we are all dreaming of. And the money in the jar is enough to pay for it. We set the chair right beside the window. Now Grandma sits in it and talks with people going by in the daytime. Mama sits down and watches the news on TV when she comes home from her job. After supper, I sit with her and she can reach right up and turn out the light if I fall asleep in her lap.

    (Text 4)
W: Could you put your seat forward now, sir? We’ll be landing shortly.
    M: So soon? Great!
    (Text 5)
W: That man just threw his rubbish on the floor!
M: Well, it’s a theater. Someone will clean it up later.
    W: You don’t think that’s rude?
M: It’s none of our business.
    (Text 6)
M: When shall I say that you will arrive?
W: Tell them that I plan to be there by tomorrow afternoon.
M: Shall I have them make a hotel reservation for you?
W: No need. I made one last week by telephone.
M: Do you plan to stay longer than three days?
W: I don’t think so. I can take care of all the necessary business in three days.
M: Well, have a good trip.
    W: Thank you.
    (Text 7)
W: How about these glasses for Laura and David’s wedding?
M: The style is good. They have a nice shape.
    W: Let’s see, they’re $60 for four glasses.
M: Doesn’t that seem expensive? They’re awfully small.
W: No, the size is okay, and the price is actually okay, too, for a really nice set like this.
M: Are blue glasses useful? I mean, will they go with their other things?
W: Now that you say it, I don’t think blue is a good idea.
M: Yeah, let’s look for something similar in another color.
    (Text 8)
W: Good afternoon, Kingswell Sports club, how can I help you?
M: Oh, I was wondering if you could give me some information about your club.
    W: Of course.
M: Do you have tennis courts, for example?
    W: No, I’m afraid we don’t. We’re mainly a golf club.
M: What about football? I heard you had a team.
W: No, I’m sorry. Perhaps you’re thinking about Fresham Sports Center. But we have a keep-fit studio, which is very popular with members, and then as well as that there’s swimming, of course.
M: That’s good. I like to swim every day. What about relaxing after exercise? I assume you have a restaurant or something.
W: At the moment, we’ve only got a salad bar. The restaurant will be in use by the end of the year.
    M: Sounds good!
    (Text 9)
M: Phew! I just made it in time! Do you mind if I sit here?
    W: No, please, go ahead.
M: Thanks. Ah … it’s good to sit down. I really thought I was going to miss this train!
W: Yes, you got on just before it left.
M: I had to run to catch it. But at least I can sit down now all the way to Oxford.
W: Oxford? This train goes to Bristol.
M: Oh no! Where does it go?
    W: It goes to Bristol.
    M: You’re joking!
W: You need the next train — the one at 10:04. This is the 9:55 to Bristol.
    M: But it was after 10 o’clock when I got on …
W: I know. We left a bit late. But it’s definitely the train to Bristol. You can go and ask the conductor.
M: What am I going to do? I’m going to an interview in Oxford. I can’t be late!
W: Don’t worry. This train stops at Reading. Just get off there and wait a few minutes. You can get on your train to Oxford.
M: Great! Thank you so much.
    W: No problem.
    (Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. Welcome back to Story Time, and this week we’re going to talk about Margaret Fuller.
Margaret Fuller was born in 1810 in America. Up to the age of nine, her education was at home, with her father. Margaret was an excellent student. In fact, by the age of six, she was translating Latin poetry into English. By the age of ten, she was at school. And eventually, she became a teacher.
So, why did she become so well known? Well, she had very strong opinions about the role of women and particularly about what jobs they could do. Margaret believed that a woman could do any job that a man could do.
Later, she became a journalist. She worked for the New York Tribune and became its first female editor. She also wrote reviews for it, as she was famous for having strong opinions about literature. Some of the reviews she wrote were very sharp. As a result, she was not always popular with novelists and poets of her time. Besides, she was interested in many different topics. For example, she wanted to change people’s attitudes to Native Americans and African Americans. She certainly tried to make the world a better place.
This is Tom, on 685 FM, saying good night.
