I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn’t yet, I highly recommend (推荐) it.Firefly LaneBy Kristin HannahThis is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll share this book to your best friend.Half the SkyBy Nicholas KristofFor any person of any age, Half the Sky is a must-read. It describes the struggle of women and the most pressing human rights problems of our time: the common oppression of women and girls. The Little PrinceBy Antoine de SaintThis children’s book is simple. It might seem like a wrong book to recommend to someone in their twenties but perhaps that’s what makes it a good choice. It sings praises to exploration and shows the importance of making friends.21. Who is the writer of the book The Kite Runner?A. Khaled Hosseini.        B. Kristin Hannah.C. Nicholas Kristof.        D. Antoine de Saint.22. What can you learn from Firefly Lane?A. It’s written by Tully and Kate. B. It’s about friendship, love and life lessons.C. Firefly Lane.C. Half the Sky. D. The Little Prince.BI got into the teaching profession purely by choice. I was then in 9th grade when my mathematics teacher asked me to take a class for a few students to whom the subject seemed difficult. And believe me, I enjoyed the entire teaching session. I never knew teaching would be so interesting. I loved my freshmen and was delighted to teach my so-called students who came up with lots of good questions. After my post-graduation, I worked as a software developer with a public sector(部门) in Bangalore for a few years. But I realized that no job could provide me with the satisfaction that I experienced while teaching and training. I always wanted to connect with a wider group of people. In fact, I felt it was a timely realization for me to choose the teaching profession. I applied to a few colleges, and finally I was chosen as a lecturer, and I had to lecture graduate and post-graduate students in a college. On the first day, I was nervous thinking that I had to teach the senior classes. But now I can say that giving lectures was one of the best experiences of my life. I was a Computer Science and Information Technology lecturer, but I tried to help my students with subjects that were not within my domain(范围). It was a new feeling to me every morning before I went to the classes. I used to feel energized and excited thinking that the class would be lit up with bright faces to greet me, “Good morning, Madam.”To me each day was a new beginning, with new feelings, new experiences and new queries(疑问). I loved to explore their young minds and read their inquisitive faces when a particular topic seemed tough. It was extremely challenging to motivate them to participate, think critically, question and also respect others’ points of view. Though few things never seemed easy, it was extremely exciting to assure them that they really can. That is the reason I love to teach.24. From the first paragraph we know that____.A. a great many questions were put forward by the author's “students”B. the author became a real teacher in 9th gradeC. the author joined the teaching profession because she had toD. the author's math teacher was often absent25. When the author worked as a software developer, she might feel______.A. interested B. dissatisfiedC. nervous D. proud26. What can we learn about the author?A. She liked the students most who often challenged her to read.B. She was too nervous to speak a word in her first class.C. New feelings, experiences and queries made her days new.D. She was unwilling to solve her students' questions beyond her domain.27. What would be the best title for this text?A. Why I Love to Teach B. What My Life Is LikeC. How I Was Chosen as a Lecturer D. My First Lesson as a TeacherCWhen I was seven my father gave me a Timex, my first watch. I loved it, wore it for years, and haven’t had another one since it stopped ticking a decade ago. Why? Because I don’t need one. I have a mobile phone and I’m always near someone with an iPod or something like that. All these devices(装置)tell the time — which is why, if you look around, you’ll see lots of empty wrists; sales of watches to young adults have been going down since 2007. But while the wise have realized that they don’t need them others—apparently including some distinguished men of our time—are spending total fortunes on them. Brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Breitling command shocking prices, up to 250,000 for a piece. This is ridiculous(荒谬的). Expensive cars go faster than cheap cars. Expensive clothes hang better than cheap clothes. But these days all watches tell the time as well as all other watches. Expensive watches come with extra functions — but who needs them? How often do you dive to 300 meters into the sea or need to find your direction in the area around the South Pole? So why pay that much of five years’ school fees for watches that allow you to do these things? If justice were done, the Swiss watch industry should have closed down when the Japanese discovered how to make accurate watches for a five-pound note. Instead the Swiss reinvented the watch, with the aid of millions of pounds’ worth of advertising, as a message about the man wearing it. Rolexes are for those who spend their weekends climbing icy mountains; a Patek Philippe is for one from a rich or noble family; a Breitling suggests you like to pilot planes across the world. Watches are now classified(归类) as “investments”(投资). A 1994 Patek Philippe recently sold for nearly 350,000, while 1960s Rolexes have gone from 15,000 to 30,000 plus in a year. But a watch is not an investment. It’s a toy for self-satisfaction, a matter of fashion. Prices may keep going up—they’ve been rising for 15 years. But when fashion moves on, the owner of that 350,000 beauty will suddenly find his pride and joy is no more a good investment than my childhood Timex.28. The sales of watches to young people have fallen because they______.A. have other devices to tell the time B. think watches too expensiveC. prefer to wear an iPod D. have no sense of time29. It seems ridiculous to the writer that ______.A. people dive 300 meters into the seaB. expensive clothes sell better than cheap onesC. cheap cars don’t run as fast as expensive onesD. expensive watches with unnecessary functions still sell30. What can be learnt about Swiss watch industry from the passage?A. It targets rich people as its potential customers.B. It’s hard for the industry to beat its competitors.C. It wastes a huge amount of money in advertising.D. It’s easy for the industry to reinvent cheap watches.31. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. Timex or Rolex? B. My Childhood TimexC. Watches? Not for Me! D. Watches — a Valuable CollectionDThe Chinese new year begins on 22 January 2023 and lasts until 9 February 2024. While most of Asia celebrates the year of the rabbit, Vietnam celebrates the year of the cat. In the Chinese zodiac, there are 12 animals, and the 4th animal is the rabbit; while in the Vietnamese(越南人) zodiac(十二生肖), the 4th position is occupied by the cat. How the cat substituted for the rabbit in Vietnam's zodiac is still the subject of debate. Ancient storytellers said the Jade Emperor organized a race across a river for all the animals in the world. The first 12 to reach the other side would appear in the zodiac. In the Chinese version of the story, the cat and the rat were riding across a river on an ox(牛) when the rat pushed the cat into the water. The rat won the race, turning the two animals into enemies. That is why cats have been hunting rats ever since. However, in the Vietnamese version — which did not have a rabbit — the cat could swim and ended up arriving. One possible explanation for replacing rabbit with cat might have to do with language. In old Chinese, there is a word tied to the sign of the rabbit that is pronounced mao(卯). The pronunciation is similar to mèo, the Vietnamese word for cat. Quyen Di, a lecturer at UCLA, said the custom has to do with the landscape of Vietnam. "Originally, the Chinese lived in the savanna(稀树草原)area, while the Vietnamese lived in the lowland area. The people of the savanna prefer a nomadic(游牧的)life, close to the wilderness, and they chose the rabbit as an animal that lived in the wild fields. In contrast(对比), the lowland people of Vietnam consider rabbits as animals that are used for food and chose the cat because they believe cats are friends living in their house." This year, many Vietnamese are buying new cat-themed cases for their mobile phones. And one of the top Google searches in Vietnam is "why there is no cat in the Chinese zodiac". 32. The underlined words "substituted for" in paragraph 1 can be replaced by _____. A. took charge of       B. fought for C. took the place of     D. depended on 33. What can we learn from the Vietnamese zodiac story? A. The Jade Emperor showed favor to the cat. B. The rabbit fell into the river in the zodiac race. C. The rat and the rabbit were enemies in ancient times. D. The cat finished fourth by swimming across the river. 34. What made the Vietnamese choose the cat according to Quyen Di? A. Their living environment. B. Their language pronunciation. C. Their lifestyle of raising cats as pets. D. Their custom of hunting rabbits for food. 35. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To explain the history of the Chinese zodiac. B. To show ways of celebrating the year of the rabbit. C. To state the popularity of Chinese traditional culture. D. To introduce the origin of the year of the cat in Vietnam. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。Kids' healthFour steps for fighting stressEverybody gets stressed from time to time. ___36__ Some ways of dealing with stress — like screaming or hitting someone — don't solve (解决) much.
