Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get
to your next class. My high school is very big and the 4 minutes to go from one class to another isn't really a lot of time even for a quick boy like me. Today, I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher
said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you'll have detention(放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher showed us how to make portraits(肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it's going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today, we wrote about
ourselves. The teacher asked us to just write what we thought, and we would pay attention to punctuation(标点符号)later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good one, and the teacher said I had used good images to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with students I
didn't know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch, I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it's a skill we need in every class.
    24. What happened to the author after his science class?
    A. He got lost on campus. B. He was given a detention.
    C. He took his science textbook. D. He was late for his math class.

    C. He encouraged him to be creative. D. He asked him to check punctuation.
    27. What can be the best title for this passage?

Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager. “I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’ ” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.” Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of
parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits (轨道).
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as pop culture and sex would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s
still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the
1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and at more democratic (民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now,” explains Mr. Ballmer.
    28. What doesn’t the underlined word “gulf” means in the first paragraph?
    A. difference. B. argument. C. balance. D. achievement.
    29. What is the change in today’s parent-child relationship?
    A. There is less parent-child activities.
    B. There is more respect for parents from children.
    C. There is a new equality between parents and children.
    D. There is more strictness and authority on the part of parents.
    30. Which word best describes Kerrie’s attitude to the change of the parent-child relationship?
    A. Interested. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.
    31. What is the purpose of the passage?
    A. To describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with.
    B. To discuss the development of the parent-child relationship.
    C. To suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship.

At Beijing's Palace Museum, it sometimes seems that time stands still, but the clocks keep
ticking at a small workshop there. This is where clock conservator 文物修复员)Qi Haonan works. . As part of the fourth generation of conservators to repair and restore antique(古老的)clocks at(

the museum since 1949, Qi has returned more than 100 clocks to their former glory.
After having majored in mechanical automation during his university studies, Qi joined the
cultural relics restoration department at the Palace Museum in 2005. “In the beginning, everything in the palace was new to me. It made me excited to even think about repairing antique clocks,” the
41-year-old told China Daily. But reality soon weakened his warmth. There is a rule at the museum:
For the first year you can look, but not touch. From 8 a. m. to5 p. m. every day, he checked and took apart watches and clocks collected from his friends to practice. After a year of repeated work, he could finally get his hands on the clocks in the museum and get a better understanding of the job. To him, restoring such clocks doesn't mean making them look brand-new. Through cleaning and restoration, he tries to keep them in their original form, bringing back their former function.
Qi still remembered the excitement he felt when the hands of his first repaired clock began to
move. It was a French clock, which took him a month to restore. “What amazes me most about these clocks is that they combine the scientific advances, technological precision (精确)and trends in decorative art of their particular times,” Qi told China Daily.
Although the antique clock repairing special skills at the Palace Museum were listed as a
national intangible(非物质的)cultural heritage in 2014, it was still a little-known skill and the specialty was in short supply of professionals. Until 2016, a 3-part TV documentary, Masters in the Forbidden City, made it possible to the public.
Qi started posting videos about the antique clocks on social media in 2019, giving viewers a
look into the work. “With rising attention and influence, antique clock restoration can not only be further developed, but also expanded to more museums which house antique clocks and watches,” Qi told China Daily.
    32. What can be known about the clock conservator Qi Haonan?
    A. He began to work at the Palace Museum in 1949.
    B. He learned how to restore antique clocks at university.
    C. He has decided to rescue the cultural relics restoration.
    D. He is part of the fourth generation of clock conservators.
    33. Why did Qi Haonan lose a bit of warmth at the beginning of his work?
    A. He couldn't touch the antique clocks. B. He was asked to do much repeated work.

Lily loved school. However, there was one class Lily worried about more than any other—art. She didn’t know why she just wasn’t any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going
to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms. Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot.
But this announcement made Lily nervous. “Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do.
On Monday, Lily felt frightened, so after school Lily asked Ms. Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Lily,” Ms. Clay said. “Just remember, you can create any
kind of art you want.” Ms. Clay smiled at her. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn’t always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Clay’s
words. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Lily wrote the word “terrified” on
her paper. She crumpled (揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball. Suddenly an idea struck her.

Why not create something out of crumpled paper? _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________
