Joseph Conrad, a famous English novelist, said that his goal as a writer was “to make you hear, to make you feel, and above all, to make you see. That, and no more, is everything”. A good short story tries to give the reader a sense of the actual experience. Often it leaves a single sharp impression to be turned over and over in the mind. After finishing the story, the reader should have something to think about: the humor of life, its ironies (嘲笑), or the unpredictability of human behavior.
In order to read a short story with full understanding, the reader must approach the content on two levels. The first and most obvious level is conveyed through the plot. Plot refers to the sequence of events, to the actions of the characters and the situations in which they are involved. To explain the plot, then, is to tell what happened in the story and to whom. In some short stories, plot is the dominating element. In other short stories, plot plays a very minor role.
In Hemingway’s story, The Old Man and the Sea, however, we must approach the content on another level. The impact of the story comes from the insight it gives us into the needs and desires of youth and old age.
To understand and appreciate the story, the reader must be able to identify its general topic or theme. The next step is to identify the device by which the author comments on this theme. Finally, the reader should be able to explain the insights which the author has given into the theme.
Readers cannot appreciate a short story fully unless they react not only to what has been said but also to how it has been said. They must look for style and structure. Style grows out of the writer’s own personality and can be seen in the choice of words and phrases, the arrangement of sentences, the rhythm and tone. Structure refers to the architecture of the story, the way in which the details are selected and arranged to produce the desired effect.
24.Which is mentioned about a good short story after it is finished reading in the first paragraph?
A.The wise fun life carries. B.Laughters.
C.Unexpected attack. D.Actual experience of life.
25.The author takes The Old Man and the Sea to explain that ________.
A.plot is the most important role in understanding a short story fully
B.readers can understand a story well themselves by reading
C.we can’t approach the content of a short story on either of the two levels
D.we can approach the book content on another level other than plot level
26.Which of the following helps us fully appreciate a short story?
A.The style and structure of a story.
B.The reader’s own personality.
C.The arrangement of words and sentences.
D.The comments the author says about the book.
27.Joseph Conrad would most probably agree that ________.
A.a good story writer inspires with various techniques
B.a good story may as well be attached with an audiovisual version
C.a good story doesn’t relate to feelings of the readers
D.a good story writer employs pictures or images
The Amazon rainforest is moving toward a “tipping point” past which trees will start to die off in large numbers, researchers have said.
The study published in the Journal of Natural Climate Change was conducted by scholars from the University of Exeter, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Technical University of Munich .They used satellited data from 1991 to 2016 to examine trends in deforestation.
They calculated that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover when experiencing droughts, which are also increasingly more common due to global warming .
“Deforestation and climate change are likely to be the main drivers of this decline ,” Niklas Boers of PIK and the Technical University of Munich told the BBC. The study has predicted that it is only a matter of decades until a “significant chunk” of the Amazon is transformed from rainforest into savannah (大草原).
What would the world be like without the Amazon rainforest ? The destruction of the Amazon rainforest, in some ways caused by global warming, will also speed up this process. “The Amazon stores lots of carbon and all of that would be released into the atmosphere, which would then further contribute to increasing temperatures and have future effects on global mean temperatures, ”Professor Boulton of the University of Exeter told the BBC.
This worrying snowball effect means that the destruction of the Amazon will make the much larger battle against global warming more difficult. The destruction of the Amazon would also have a huge impact on the ecology of the Earth. The Amazon rainforest is home to more than 30,000 species of plants,2.5 million species of insects, 2,500 fish, more than 1,500 bird species,550 reptiles (爬行动物), and 500 mammals , according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. A savannah, a grassland environment that lacks a large variety of plant life would be unable to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently exist in the rainforest. It is likely that a variety of species tend to be endangered or even go missing, as they would be unable to adjust to this new ecosystem.
28.In what way does the writer make the conclusion about the study in the first paragraph?
A.By using numbers. B.By analyzing data.
C.By making experiments. D.By imagining the future.
29.What usually happens as a result of global warming according to the text ?
A.Lacking water. B.Flooding houses.
C.Causing fires. D.Planting trees.
30.According to the text, the future of the rainforest would be that________.
A.it will last long until the forest recovery
B.it won’t be long before the rainforests become grasslands
C.the destruction has a huge impact on people’s life
D.the Amazon stores lots of oxygen and will be released into the air
31.What is implied in the last paragraph ?
A.The battle against global warming is not so difficult.
B.No life can adjust to the new ecosystem.
C.A grassland environment is better to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently exist in the rainforest.
D.A large number of species will probably be extinct.
Six relatives crowded in a small air pocket, day after day. A hopeless teenager grew so thirsty that he drank his own urine (尿液). Two frightened sisters were comforted by a pop song as they waited for rescuers to free them.
These earthquake survivors were among more than a dozen people pulled out of the rubble (瓦砾) alive Friday after spending over four days trapped in extremely cold darkness following the disaster that struck Turkey(土耳其) and Syria(叙利亚). The disaster has already killed more people than Japan’s Fukushima earthquake and tsunami, with many more bodies yet to be recovered and counted.
Relatives wept and chanted as rescuers pulled 17-year-old Adnan Muhammed from a basement (地下室) in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, near the quake’s epicenter (震中). He had been trapped for 94 hours. For one of the rescuers, Adnan ‘s survival hit home hard: “I have a son just like you,” she told him after giving him a warm hug. “l swear to you, I have not slept for four days... I was trying to get you out.”
The building was only 600 feet from the Mediterranean Sea (地中海) and narrowly avoided being flooded when the serious earthquake sent water pouring into the city center. A trapped woman told her would-be rescuers that she had given up hope of being found and prayed to be put to sleep because she was so cold.
Even though experts say trapped people can live for a week or more, the chances of finding more survivors were quickly waning. Death is closing everywhere: deadhouse and graveyard were unbearable, and bodies wrapped in blankets and tarps (防水油布) in the streets of some cities.
Temperatures remained below freezing and many people have no shelter. The Turkish government has distributed millions of hot meals, as well as tents and blankets, but was still struggling to reach many people in need.
The U.N. refugee agency estimated that as many as 5.3 million people have been left homeless in Syria. Reporters said Friday that the agency is focusing on providing reliefs.
Syrian President Bashar Assad and his wife visited survivors in the Aleppo University Hospital. It was the leader’s first public appearance in an affected area of the country since the disaster.
Turkey’s disaster-management agency said more than 20,200 people had been confirmed killed and more than 80,000 injured.
More than 3,500 have been confirmed killed in Syria, bringing the total number of dead to nearly 24000. Some12,000 buildings in Turkey have either collapsed or stood serious damage. Turkey’s vice president (副总统), Fuat Oktay said more than 1 million people were being housed in temporary shelters.
32.According to the article, recently there were disastrous earthquakes happened in ________.
A.America B.Japan C.Turkey and Syria D.the Mediterranean Sea
33.According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE ?
A.The earthquakes have already caused lots of buildings to collapse and people homeless.
B.All survivors have been rescued already.
C.The earthquakes did not bring much impact on the disaster area.
D.Reliefs were supplied in time.
34.According to the article, the underlined word “waning” is closest in meaning to________.
A.rising B.balancing C.decreasing D.approaching
35.What did the government do after the big disaster ?
A.Syrian government organized rescuers to help.
B.Syrian government is focusing on providing reliefs.
C.The Turkish government has distributed meals and provided temporary shelters.
D.Turkey’s top politicians visited survivors and rescuers.

When Donald Crouch first encountered Jim in his English class in rural Michigan, he saw an unhappy boy, who’d gone deep into a cocoon (茧) of silence.
Donald might have assumed that Jim was bored or uninterested or even backward. Certainly, he appeared to be all of those things.
But there was something in the young boy that lit up whenever the subject turned to poetry. It was unnoticeable, but Donald could see a shift in the boy ‘s attitude--a quiet but unmistakable enthusiasm that accompanied any discussion of Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Tennyson. A twinkle in his eyes would appear whenever Donald lectured on matters of English verse, something which proved to be most appealing to the otherwise disappointed teacher. Although Jim was interested in all manners of poetry, he seemed particularly excited when Donald would discuss Walt Whitman, that greatest of American poets.
One day Donald kept Jim after school and learned that Jim stuttered ( 口吃). Donald understood that Jim had accepted the written word because the spoken word had escaped him. The next day, Donald told the pupils to write a poem. Jim turned his assignment in, and Donald was surprised by how good it was.
The teacher read the assignment over and over again in disbelief and, truth be told, with a little bit of envy; how could a student from the middle of nowhere come up with something like this? He turned his head once again to the boy and began to have an idea.
Donald had noticed earlier that Jim’s stutter disappeared whenever he quoted his favorite poets out loud .

2.B
M: What’s wrong with Tom? I take him as my best friend. However, he was mad at me over a small thing this morning. I tried not to be angry.
W: Come on. Best friends may not sometimes be happy.
3.B
M: I think I’ve recovered from illness and can go to work today.
W: Well, you don’t need to continue taking medicine. But you don’t look well, so please be patient and stay in bed for a few more days.
4.C
W: Have you seen any good movies recently?
M: Yes, I usually watch action films, but last week I chose an adventure film--it was a bit horrible some of the time.
W: I prefer ones based on real-life events.
5.B
W:Why do you like this exercise?
M: The equipment is easy to get. Using only a rope, I can develop my footwork and balance. And it’s a good way to lose weight.
6.B 7.A
M: Good morning, Lily! You’re always so busy. What are you doing?
W: Good morning, David! I’m making a list of food that I’m going to prepare for my dad’s welcome-home party. He’s coming back tomorrow. He was away for a month because of his job.
M: I see. Why don’t you cook his favorite food? In my opinion, he would be happy to get some homemade dishes.

M: I have got to say, or I’m not normally into romance novels, not because I don’t think they have their value, more because I’m a very impatient reader and I hate it when authors take their time getting to the point. And it’s the same reason I don’t like literary fiction. But I prefer science fiction.
W: I don’t think I agree with you about romance novels. Literary fiction, yes, for sure, it tends to be flashy and difficult. But romance novels are a type of fiction that appeal to a wider range of audience and, as such, they need to use simpler language.

W: Yes.
M: Good. Now let’s get started. If we talk it through and you make notes on it, it’ll help you to organize your review. First of all, what’s the name of the book?
W: The Human Mind.
M: So you should start your review with the title and the author. What group would you put this book in? For example, history, math…
W: Well, I suppose it’s popular science.
M: What is the theme of it?
W: Well, it looks briefly at some of the theories that have been developed about the brain.
M: Well, you should add that into your review, and don’t forget to mention the strengths and weaknesses of the book.
W: I see. One more question. The review should be handed in on February 13th. Can I hand it in two days later?
M: That will be fine.

Edinburgh International Festival
The Edinburgh International Festival is an incomparable celebration of the performing arts, for 3 weeks in August each year. There are superb examples of artistic expression from around the world, with performances of top class opera, theatre, dance and classical music.
In 1947, Rudolf Bing, Henry Harvey Wood worked together to plan a festival program of music and drama.
With the aim of encouraging the “flowering of the human spirit" in after-war Scotland and in the decades since, it has developed into a true garden of human creativity. At the center was the Edinburgh International Festival itself which in turn inspired many of the Edinburgh’s other festivals to establish their own presences, all helping to earn the Scottish capital its nickname the Festival City.
The organizers of the Festival encouraged artists, not part of the official program, to come and perform. It was from these performances that The Edinburgh Festival Fringe was born, and even more diverse festivals followed. Now Edinburgh is the proud host to twelve major festivals and a yearlon g schedule — making this truly the festival city!

根据第一段中“After finishing the story, the reader should have something to think about: the humor of life, its ironies (嘲笑), or the unpredictability of human behavior.(读完故事后,读者应该有所思考:生活的幽默,它的讽刺,或人类行为的不可预测性。)” 故选A。
根据第三段“In Hemingway’s story, The Old Man and the Sea, however, we must approach the content on another level. The impact of the story comes from the insight it gives us into the needs and desires of youth and old age.(然而,在海明威的故事《老人与海》中,我们必须从另一个层面来看待其内容。这个故事的影响来自于它让我们洞察到年轻人和老年人的需求和欲望。)”可知,原文中提到“…we must approach the content on another level. The impact of the story comes from the insight it gives us into the needs and desires of youth and old age.”,可以排除A和B, C说任何一个层面的解读都不能达成对小说的理解,不符合文章提到的two levels(两个层面)的观点,D项we can approach the book content on another level other than plot level(我们可以从情节之外的另一个层面来看待这本书的内容)是对原文“The impact of the story comes from the insight it gives us into the needs and desires of youth and old age.(这个故事的影响来自于它让我们洞察到年轻人和老年人的需求和欲望。)”
根据最后一段中“Readers cannot appreciate a short story fully unless they react not only to what has been said but also to how it has been said. They must look for style and structure.(读者不能完全欣赏一个短篇故事,除非他们不仅对所讲的内容做出反应,而且对叙述的方式做出反应。他们必须寻找风格和结构。)”可知,说明了“要全面欣赏小说不仅要关注小说本身说了什么,还要看作者是如何写作的”,原文说“如何写作的”,即要了解小说的文风和结构,B和C对style 的解释均不符合原文,D为原文未提及的内容,A项The style and structure of a story(故事的风格和结构)切题。故选A。
根据第一段中“Joseph Conrad, a famous English novelist, said that his goal as a writer was ‘to make you hear, to make you feel, and above all, to make you see. That, and no more, is everything.’( 英国著名小说家约瑟夫·康拉德说,他作为作家的目标是“让你听到,让你感受到,最重要的是让你看到。仅此而已,这就是一切。”)”可知,约瑟夫·康拉德很可能会同意,一个好的故事作家会用各种技巧来激发灵感。故选A。

根据第二段中“They used satellite data from 1991 to 2016 to examine trends in deforestation.(他们使用1991年至2016年的卫星数据来研究森林砍伐的趋势。)”和第三中“They calculated that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover when experiencing droughts,(他们计算出,75%的雨林现在面临着在经历干旱时无法恢复的风险,)”可知,在第一段中,作者是通过分析数据得出结论的。故选B。
根据文章第三段“They calculated that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover when experiencing droughts, which are also increasingly more common due to global warming.(他们计算出,75%的雨林现在面临着在经历干旱时无法恢复的风险,由于全球变暖,干旱也越来越普遍。)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段最后一句话“The study has predicted that it is only a matter of decades until a‘significant chunk’of the Amazon is transformed from rainforest into savannah (大草原).(他的研究预测,只需几十年的时间,亚马逊的“很大一部分”就会从热带雨林转变为大草原。)”
根据文章最后一段最后一句话内容“It is likely that a variety of species tend to be endangered or even go missing, as they would be unable to adjust to this new ecosystem.(由于无法适应这种新的生态系统,许多物种很可能濒临灭绝甚至消失。)” It is likely…or even go missing,其他选项的陈述都与原文表达的事实或观点不符,所以都是错的。

根据文章第二段“These earthquake survivors were among more than a dozen people pulled out of the rubble alive Friday after spending over four days trapped in extremely cold darkness following the disaster that struck Turkey and Syria.(这些地震幸存者是星期五从废墟中被救出的十多人中的一部分。在土耳其和叙利亚发生地震后,他们被困在极度寒冷的黑暗中四天多。)” 可知,近期土耳其 和叙利亚发生了地震。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据文章倒数第一段“More than 3500 have been confirmed killed in Syria, bringing the total number of dead to nearly 24000. Some12,000 buildings in Turkey have either collapsed or stood serious damage.(超过3500人在叙利亚被证实死亡,使死亡总人数达到近2.4万人。土耳其约有12000座建筑倒塌或遭受严重破坏。)”可知,地震已经造成许多建筑物倒塌,人们无家可归。故选A项。
根据文章第五段“Even though experts say trapped people can live for a week or more, the chances of finding more survivors were quickly waning. Death is closing everywhere: deadhouse and graveyard were unbearable, and bodies wrapped in blankets and tarps in the streets of some cities.(尽管专家表示,被困者可以存活一周或更长时间,但找到更多幸存者的可能性正在迅速waning。死亡无处不在:停尸房和墓地令人难以忍受,一些城市的街道上,尸体被毯子和防水布包裹着。)”结合句意可知,尽管专家认为被困者可以存活一周甚至更久,但后文表示转折,由此可以推测出,作者对于找到更多的幸存者这件事态度较为悲观;并且后文讲到“死亡无处不在”,更是验证了作者的态度。所以找到幸存者的可能性在“降低”。故选C项。
35.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Turkey’s vice president, Fuat Oktay said more than 1 million people were being housed in temporary shelters.(土耳其副总统Fuat Oktay表示,超过100万人被安置在临时避难所。)”

While you are definitely not alone in this routine (尽管你不是唯一一个这样做的人)切题,其中的while表示让步关系,引导让步状语从句。故选C。
37.根据上文“In this instance, write down different personality traits of the person you are shopping for.(在这种情况下,写下你要买的人的不同性格特征。)” Then try to determine how to use this information to find a gift that is perfectly suited to them(然后试着决定如何利用这些信息来找到最适合他们的礼物)切题,其中F项中的them指代上文中的personality traits。故选F。
根据下文描述“If you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. Often, the reason you get stuck for gift ideas is because you are restricting yourself too much.(如果你仍然一无所获,那么是时候发挥创造力了。通常,你被买礼物的想法所困扰的原因是因为你限制自己太多了。)”可知,要打破常规,跳出传统思维。所以G项Think Outside the Box(跳出固有思维模式;跳脱框架思考;解放思想)切题。故选G。
39.根据上文提示“An example of being creative is to think about what your friend’s office looks like.(有创意的一个例子是想象你朋友的办公室是什么样的。)” This can give you lots of ideas to give him a gift for his workspace(这可以给你很多想法,为他的工作空间送一份礼物)切题,其中上文中的office和选项中的workplace构成呼应关系。故选E。
40.根据上文提示“You may be wondering what an‘experience’means exactly.(你可能想知道“体验”到底是什么意思。)”再根据下文提示“If they are an adventurer, a local or foreign trip will be excellent. On the other hand, if they are a sports enthusiast, you can buy them tickets to a significant game.(如果他们是一个冒险家,国内或国外的旅行将是极好的。另一方面,如果他们是体育爱好者,你可以给他们买一场重要比赛的门票。)”可知,下文的两个“if”提示,应该是“感兴趣的任何东西”。承接上下文,D项Well, it can be anything that will interest the recipient(可以是收信人感兴趣的任何东西)切题。

根据上文“The “birth of basketball” is said to be on December 21, 1891(据说“篮球的诞生”是在1891年12月21日)”可知,1891年12月21日第一场篮球比赛进行,空白处应填序数词,故填first。
66.One possible version:
Dear Librarian,
I ‘ve made a survey about what books we students are reading and am writing to recommend two types of books that I think the library should buy. My survey shows that students read more fantasy books and less others than we expect. I propose two types of books .
The first type is fantasy novels. I think the library needs more fantasy novels because they are very popular with students. One example of good fantasy novels for the library would be The Lord of the Rings series and the Harry Potter series.
The second type to recommend is biographies. Although they are one of the least popular types of books, students should be encouraged to read more of them. Good biographies like Abraham Lincoln will inspire students to study harder and reach their goals. In addition, biographies of contemporary figures, like Steve Jobs, would also do.
Look forward to reading more of the library’s fantasy novels and biographies soon.
Yours faithfully,
Edward Li
实现目标:reach their goals→realize their goals
此外:in addition→ besides → what’s more
喜欢:be fond of→like
In addition, biographies of contemporary figures, like Steve Jobs, would also do.
In addition, biographies of contemporary figures, who include Steve Jobs, would also do.

67.One possible version:
Donald had noticed earlier that Jim’s stutter disappeared whenever he quoted his favorite poets out loud. Now the teacher tried to do something most teachers would never consider doing today: he put Jim on the spot. So he said, “Jim, would you kindly come to the front of the class and read us what you’ve written? If the words really are yours, Jim, then prove it. Stand and recite them. Right now. Or admit that you stole them.”
The whole class turned their attention to Jim. Jim sprang to his feet and recited Ode to a grapefruit just as he had written it. There was anger in his voice, but what a voice it turned out to be: big and booming and clear as a bell. That was the day Donald Crouch unlocked one of the most powerful and familiar voices in the world. From then on, the world it seemed, was too small to contain a voice as big as Jim’s.

背诵:recite /learn…by oneself
From then on /since then
