My name is Lwazi Nzimande. I started my schooling at Thukeyana Primary Farm School in Underberg, KwaZuluNatal.
I had a favourite teacher in primary school. Her name was Miss Dube. She taught me natural science and human social sciences in grade six and seven, and had a way of pushing learners to be able to think for themselves. She made sure that each and every learner took part in every lesson. She used pictures, diagrams (图表) and other things to make learning easier and more unforgettable, moving at a pace that was suitable for all students. As a teacher, she showed patience, respect, open-mindedness, and reliability (可靠性). Now you see why she was my favourite teacher in primary school, don't you?
In my opinion, patience, respect, open-mindedness, and reliability are some of the things that all teachers should have and show. A patient teacher is one who understands that some learners need more explanation than others to understand something in class. He or she should always be willing to help learners. An open-minded teacher will go beyond what is found in the textbook. A teacher who is respected will find it easy to control a class. Respect is earned through what a teacher says to learners or how he or she deals with them in general.
Miss Dube often told us not to badmouth or make fun of others. She also did so. She never badmouthed other teachers in front of us. Also, Miss Dube never made fun of her learners. She thought making fun of learners in front of others would hurt them and damage their confidence.
Miss Dube was also very honest. From my point of view, that's also what a good teacher should be like. If she didn't have an answer to a question, she would let her learners know. This set a good example to the learners.
24.Why was Miss Dube the author's favourite teacher?
A.Because of her rich knowledge.
B.Because of her good appearance.
C.Because of her teaching style and character.
D.Because of her lifestyle and attitude to students.
25.What does the author think an open-minded teacher should do?
A.Pay close attention to every student's improvement.
B.Tell about something outside the textbook.
C.Avoid believing everything in the textbook.
D.Show great respect for her students.
26.What can we learn about Miss Dube from Paragraph 4?
A.She liked praising her students. B.She was very confident in class.
C.She got along well with other teachers. D.She set a good example to her students.
27.What does the underlined word “This” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Being a very patient teacher. B.Answering students' questions.
C.Being honest in front of students. D.Teaching students very difficult things.

Machu Picchu was a city of the Inca Empire (帝国).It is sometimes called the "lost city“ because the Spanish never discovered the city when they controlled the Inca in the 1500s.
One of the most amazing things about Machu Picchu is its location. It is 8 ,000 feet above sea level on top of a mountain in the Andes in southern Peru. Three sides of the city have cliffs that drop over 1 ,400 feet to the Urubamba River. At the fourth side of the city is a high mountain.
Researchers believe that the city was first built around the year of 1450. Building work likely continued on the site until the empire was controlled by the Spanish in the middle 1500s.
Machu Picchu was built as a place for the ninth Inca King, Pachacuti. Researchers aren't sure why he built it, however. There are a number of ideas as to the reason. One idea is that it was a vacation place for the king. It is in a Vacation place than the capital city of Cuzco. It is also in a beautiful location and would have been a nice hiding place for the king. Another idea is that it was built as a religious site. Machu Picchu was not a large city. Probably only around 1,000 people lived there.
Most of the buildings were built with stones that were fitted together tightly without the use of mortar (砂浆).This style of building helped the buildings to stay complete during earthquakes. The Inca didn't use the wheel, so most of the hardwork was done by people. It would have taken hundreds of workers to move the large stones around the site.
The city was rediscovered in July 1911 by an explorer Hiram Bingham. He was led there by a local boy named Pablito Alvarez. Later, Hiram wrote a book about the city called Last City of the Incas.
28.What can we learn about Machu Picchu?
A.It's close to the Urubamba River.
B.It's controlled by the Spanish now.
C.It's surrounded by cliffs from every side.
D.It’s on top of an 8 ,000-foot-tall mountain.
29.What does the underlined word “cliffs" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Deep narrow valleys. B.Long rivers.
C.High sharp rocks. D.Huge mountains.

A.The process of building Machu Picchu.

Many of you have probably had this experience: You get on a train and are ready to take a nap or read a book, only to find that the passenger in front of you is watching a TV show on his cellphone without headphones. The child next to you won't stop crying. And the old lady behind you talks on her phone during the whole trip.
Wish the train could be less noisy? There might be a solution for you. The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, one of China's busiest high-speed rail lines, will have “quiet” carriages starting from Dec 23, Xinhua reported.
In quiet carriages, onboard videos will be muted and announcements will be made at a lower volume. Doors at the ends of the carriage will be kept closed to reduce noise from other carriages, CGTN noted. Train attendants will be responsible for making sure that passengers remain quiet and follow the rules.
Passengers who are willing to obey the rules can choose the quiet carriages when booking their tickets, according to China's national railway operator.
Some people have pointed out that this kind of quiet environment should be offered in all carriages. They say that having quiet carriages might give people the impression that they don't need to be quiet in non-quiet carriages.
While some Internet users are upholding the new service, it has also sparked discussion about just how quiet travelers should be in quiet carriages. Many people have raised questions such as “What if I snore?” and “Can we talk to our travel companions if we need to?”
32.Paragraph 1 is written to show that
A.traveling by train is very common B.people do all kinds of things on trains
C.many people watch TV shows on trains D.people on trains are sometimes very noisy
33.How will quiet carriages work?
A.Passengers won't be allowed to watch videos.
B.Train attendants won't make any announcements.
C.No one will make sure passengers follow the rules.
D.The doors at the ends of carriages will stay closed.
34.What does the underlined word “uphold” in the last paragraph mean?
A.In need of. B.In support of. C.In search of. D.In place of.
35.What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.The rules should be made clearer. B.Most people don't like the service.
C.The service is better for solo travelers. D.It's easy to make trains perfectly quiet.

Don't think it's an impossible task to pass your reading tests. Lots of people have shared their successful reading secrets here. _36_
Read a passage twice before looking up an unknown word.
If you're reading to gain new vocabulary, you should treat it as a “fill in the blanks” exercise. At first, you'll have to read every paragraph twice. _37_ The second time you read it, focus on the words you don't know. Try and work out what each word means from the sentences before and after. If you had to guess the meaning, what would it be?
_38_
Whenever you are reading in English and learn a new word, don't let it slip away! Write it down with a short definition (定义)or a little drawing. Some students like to keep a specific notebook for this--- their own personal dictionaries! Several studies have shown that writing a piece of information down on paper helps you to remember it more easily.
Read out loud.
If you're going to put time in your reading skills, you may as well get some extra practice for your speaking skills too! _39_ It's a great way to get used to speaking English too.
Divide your time into skim reading and deep reading.
You should spend some of your reading time “skim - reading texts”. This way, you learn how to get a general sense of what's going on without understanding every single word. __40__ This is when you really focus on understanding everything that's going on.
A.Write down new words.
B.Try reading some passages out loud to yourself.

第二节 (满分 25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Jordi, wake up!” my father calls in the hallway.
I quickly get up and pull on the uniform for our team. All my life, I’ve watched my parents compete. But I will participate in the human pyramid building for the first time today!
When we get there, the town square is already crowded. While we wait for our turn to compete, my friend Tomeu comes to stand with me. He and his family are also part of our team. Tomeu has competed before.
“What if I’m not ready for this, Tomeu?” I ask.
“We are never ready, Jordi. None of us who compete in the human pyramid building knows for sure how it will go,” he says and gestures toward the pyramid going up in front of us. “Just like those people, you must have faith in those below who lift you up, and you must trust yourself.”
I nod my head to show that I understand. I will do my best to follow his advice.
Soon, it is our turn. I gather with my team in the center of the square and turn my attention to the task at hand.
We must first make the base for our pyramid. My father and three of the strongest men stand in a circle facing each other as they hold tightly to each other’s arms. Four more strong men step behind, each holding his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then as many as fifty more men and women crowd behind them and begin pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together. Four smaller men climb onto the backs of the original base group and stand on their shoulders. They then grab onto each other’s arms and hold firmly, creating a strong second level. I can see that my father’s face is red as he works hard to be strong for the person on his shoulders. Our pyramid is growing taller and taller and eventually it is my turn to climb to the top of the pyramid and stand on my mother’s shoulders.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Climbing up the first two levels is easy.

W: Can we pick up groceries later? I have a dentist appointment at noon.
M: We’ve been up since 8:00. I’m hungry. The dentist’s is around the corner, and we still have two hours to get there.
3.C
M: Wow...so beautiful. I like the color you painted the walls. Why did you decide on purple?
W: I was inspired by a movie I saw last month.
M: I think you should get a new carpet. This one doesn’t match anything in the room.
4.A
M: Can you believe that? It’s sunny right now. But the weather report says there’ll be rain later. I can’t go to the park this afternoon.
W: Well, you can do some reading in the library or do some exercise in the gym.
5.C
6.B 7.C
M: Hi, I am sorry I am late. There was heavy traffic near the bridge. Cars were backed up for miles. W: That’s OK. I tried to call your mobile phone, but you must have turned it off. Our flight has been delayed by three hours. M: Oh, it must be because of the thunderstorm. It’s pouring outside. W: Yes, but the weather should clear up by this evening, and at least now we’ll have time to get something to eat. I am hungry. Let’s go get some lunch.
8.A 9.B 10.C
W: Have you ever had dreams that you can remember?
M: Yes. It’s funny you should mention that. Most nights I dream about football. That’s what I dreamed about this Monday and Tuesday — but on Wednesday it was something completely different.
W: What was that?
M: I dreamed I was an astronaut, landing on Mars.
W: That must have been fun.
M: It was, but it was also scary. I had to depend on all the technology created by scientists and computer people. I had to trust them, because my life depended on it.
W: And did you?
M: Yes, that’s why I was there on Mars —but it was something I had never thought of before. I had to be sure they had done their jobs properly.
W: We have a science lesson this morning. You can tell the teacher about your dream.
M: Maybe. Now I can’t stop thinking what an important job scientists do.
W: That’s what I want to do for a living. I suppose you want to be an astronaut, do you?
M: I did before I had that dream. Now I’m not so sure. It was certainly exciting, and it felt very real.

W: Hey, James. How’s the job search going?
M: Hi, Sharon. I had no idea it would take so much time. It sure makes it difficult to prepare for final exams. How about you?
W: I was lucky. There seems to be a shortage of high school teachers now. I applied to three schools, and each one offered me a position.
M: That’s great. Which one did you like?
W: I haven’t decided yet. Of course, it would be easiest for me to stay here in New York or go back home to Boston. But I may go to California.
M: That would be a big move.
W: So, tell me about your plans.
M: Well, I applied to six newspapers. Last week, I had an interview with New York Times.
W: How did it go?
M: No so well. I think they’re looking for people with some experience.
W: Have you had any other interviews?
M: No, not yet. It seems that everyone wants to be a writer these days. There just aren’t that many jobs out there.
W: That’s too bad.
M: Yes. I had hoped to have a job lined up by graduation. That doesn’t seem likely now.
W: What will you do if you can’t find a job?
M: In that case, I’ll begin working on a master’s degree in the fall.
W: Good luck!
15.A 16.C 17.B
W: All right, students. Your homework for the weekend is to review Chapter 3 and to write a summary of the most important ideas in the chapter. Next week, we’ll begin our presentations.
M: Excuse me, Ms. Diaz…
W: Yes?
M: How long should our summary be?
W: It should be one page, but no more than that. Also, remember that when you summarize a chapter, you must leave your own opinion out.
M: Yes, ma’am. But there are many different views on the Civil War in American history. It is difficult to summarize anything important without including my opinion at all.
W: A summary only includes the facts. You can use the author’s words directly, but you cannot include your own ideas. For the homework, I just need to see if you understood the main ideas in the chapter.
M: Should we try to connect these ideas to other things we read this term?
W: No. You can do that next week when you give your presentation.

M: Hello, everyone. I’m Carol from the University of Manchester. It is indeed a great pleasure to have this chance to talk about exam stress with you. As you know, exam stress can cause you to feel anxious or depressed, and this might affect your sleeping or eating habits. It is normal to feel a bit worried about exams, but you can do something to make it easier for yourself. First, believe in yourself. Remind yourself of all the times you succeeded in situations you were afraid you’d fail. Give yourself credit and become your own best cheerleader. Second, don’t compare yourself with others. Comparing yourself to others usually doesn’t get you far as everyone is unique. You’re great as you arc. Finally, talk to someone - a friend, a parent, or a teacher. It’s not a shame but a powerful choice that will help you feel better.

Climbing up the first two levels is easy. But as I go higher, the pyramid feels less steady. By the time I reach the fifth level, the pyramid below me shakes a bit. My heart begins a crazy dance in my chest. My hands become sweaty and my knees start shaking for I am very high off the ground. I take a deep breath to calm myself and tell myself that I cannot be the one to ruin our pyramid and that I cannot let my team down.
“Focus. Balance,” My mother whispers to me. I try to place my feet into her belt very carefully and climb onto her shoulders. With focus and trust, I slowly straighten my knees and waves my hand to the judges. Far below, I can hear the crowd cheering louder and louder. With faith in each other and with focus on the task, our team has built our pyramid and I have become a real pyramid builder today!
