You want me to live such a tough life for 40 years? Let me have 20 years, and I’ll give the rest back to you.” So God agreed.
On the second day, God created the dog and said, “You’ll be man’s best friend, guarding his house and eating his leftovers. I’ll give you a life span of 30 years.” The dog shook his head. “Eating leftovers for 30 years? No way! I’ll give half back to you!” So God agreed.

John Montefiore's path to graduation from the University of Toronto was a little unusual. He recently completed his bachelor's degree(学士学位) which he started in1995.
Montefiore left university in 1996 and tried to tell himself that a degree wasn't necessary for personal success. But it remained unfinished business until he made the decision to return in 2018 at the age 42. At that time, his job development stalled, so he made up his mind to go back to school in order to improve himself and work well in future.
The second time around, Montefiore never missed a class and always sat in the front row. He found many courses invaluable and he received the Award of Excellence twice. He found support services played an important role in his successful return. He said, “I hadn't written a paper for years, so I found the college writing centre to be of great use. Before I handed in a paper, they would give me feedback, which was really great. The university has so much built in to help students succeed and I'm so thankful for that.” But he also met difficulties this time. As a student much older than others, he found it harder to make friends with classmates.
However, no matter what had happened before, he finally got his bachelor's degree. He said, “After all these years, I had thought it wouldn't mean anything, but it means a lot. I totally understand the value of education now. It's not necessarily the value that other people see in it, but the value it gives me as a person, for my confidence and my self-esteem. It also helps me prepare well before I re-enter the workplace.”
28.Why was Montefiore's graduation unusual?
A.He had achieved personal success before. B.He understood the importance of a degree.
C.He finished his degree at a much older age. D.He began his university study at a young age.
29.What does the underlined word "stalled" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Stopped. B.Started. C.Survived. D.Succeeded.
30.What can we learn about Montefiore from the third paragraph?
A.He got good grades very easily. B.He took his study seriously this time
C.He was thankful for his classmates' help D.He had difficulty using support services.
31.What did Montefiore learn from his experience?
A.Confidence is important in one's life. B.Others' opinions on education matter a lot.
C.Higher education is a must for personal success. D.Education makes one feel better about himself.
D
As people get older, the types and numbers of friends they have tend to change. As young adults, humans have large groups of friends. With age, they often prefer to spend their time with just a few close, positive individuals. Researchers long believed that this aging attraction toward meaningful relationships was unique to humans, but a new study finds that chimps (大猩猩) also have similar tendencies.
Rosati and her colleagues used 78,000 hours of observations made over 20 years from the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in Uganda. The data looked at the social interactions of 21 male chimps between 15 and 58 years old. The researchers only studied male chimps because they show stronger social bonds and have more social interactions than female chimps.
Researchers found that wild chimpanzees share a similar pattern of social aging with humans. Rosati says, “They prefer strong, mutual social bonds and interact with others in more positive ways as they get older.” The older chimpanzees preferred spending more time with chimps that they had become friends with over the years. They would sit close to these long-time companions and groom (梳毛) each other. By contrast, younger chimps had more one-sided relationships where they would groom a friend, but the action wasn’t returned.
Older male chimps were also more likely to spend more time alone. The researchers said that they showed a shift from negative interactions to more positive ones, preferring to spend their later years in nonconfrontational (非对抗性的), positive relationships. Researchers call the preference a “positivity bias”.
Researchers theorize that chimps, like humans, are able to change their social focus as they age. “We propose that this aging pattern may be the result of shared changes in our abilities to regulate our emotions with age,” Rosati says. “This shared pattern between chimpanzees and humans could represent an adaptive response where older adults focus on important social relationships that provide benefits and avoid interactions that have negative consequences as they lose competitive fighting ability.”
32.What does the new study find about chimps?
A.Male chimps show more interactions than females.
B.Old chimps don’t care about friends as much as young ones.
C.Chimps concentrate more on meaningful relations with age.
D.Chimps share aging problems similar to human beings.
33.How did Rosati and her colleagues conduct their research?
A.By studying the data provided by other researchers.
B.By making scientific investigations and observations.
C.By setting up models on the computer in the lab.
D.By monitoring both the humans’ and chimps’ behavior.
34.What do researchers think causes this aging attraction to meaningful relationships?
A.Inability to regulate emotions. B.Eagerness to build closer relationships.
C.Loss of competitiveness in strength. D.Failure to adapt to the changeable nature.
35.Where does this text probably come from?
A.A short story collection. B.A popular science magazine.
C.A graduate research paper. D.A biology textbook.

The Power of Silence
Joe was an old man aged 75. He lived happily in a beautiful family. His children grew up and moved to different cities in pursue of good career and future. He lived in a small village carrying the memories of his deceased wife.
Joe had four grandchildren. They used to visit him during their holidays. It was now their vacation time and Joe was eagerly waiting for their arrival. He prepared his home for the kids, cleaning the house, mowing the garden, and buying their favourite foods and dresses.
In the busy arrangements, he lost his watch. The watch was gifted by his dead wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch. After his wife’s death, it became his sole companion with its ‘tick, tick’ sound throughout the silent night.
He was happy with the kids at home. He forgot the watch missing. It was only the next day when he was about to take bath, he remembered the watch was lost. He saw it last when he was arranging things in the barn.
He was very upset. His grandchildren asked him why he was so dull and what troubled him. Joe said, “Dear children! I lost the most precious watch I have ever had and ever got in my life. It was a gift from your grandma. I lost it while cleaning the house! I feel like I’m missing my heart.” The children tried to comfort him. One granddaughter asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last time before it was missing?”
Joe said, “I guess when I was cleaning the barn!”
The children rushed to the barn to search for the watch. The barn was full of waste materials. They searched for more than two hours with the help of Joe, but could not find it. Joe was completely lost, and he asked the children to stop searching.

66.Dear David,
I’m glad to hear that you are going to make a presentation about traditional Chinese festivals in our class. I’m willing to help you with this.
As for a recommendation, I think the Mid-Autumn Festival is a good choice. It usually falls in September or early October, which is also known as the harvest festival. People celebrate it by eating mooncakes and admiring the full moon together with family and friends. It has a deep meaning of family reunion and expressing gratitude for the harvest. Plus, you can also introduce some cultural legends and stories related to the festival, such as the story of Chang’e flying to the moon.
I wish you a successful presentation and hope that everyone could have a better understanding of Chinese traditional festivals.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
67.Paragraph 1:
All went out disappointedly, except Ted, who sat there in silence. He went back to the barn to search again. Joe asked why he was going there a second time. And the other children were also curious about Ted’s going. But the little boy just asked the others not to follow him and to remain silent. All the children kept silent as they were told. Ted was there for about fifteen minutes and then he rushed to his grandfather, holding the watch in his hand. To everyone’s surprise, Ted had found the watch. He gave it to Joe, which made Joe extremely delighted.
Paragraph 2:
They were surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy replied: “I sat there without making any noise, and the barn was so silent. After a few minutes, I heard the ‘tick, tick’ sound and found the watch.” Joe hugged and thanked the little boy. This is the power of silence. If we stay calm when facing difficulty, we are more able to find the solution!

Here are some rules that we can follow. First, we should stay calm and dial 110 and 120 at once. Second, don’t move the injured people. Leave them where they are unless you have learned the first aid. Third, put on some signs to remind other drivers of the accidents to avoid any further accidents. Fourth, we need to check the person’s breathing. If the person’s breathing stops, we should try to make him start his breathing again right away in the mouth-to-mouth breathing. Last, if a person is bleeding, we need to stop the bleeding by pressing on the wound with a clean cloth. After all the above have been done, we can stay with the person until the police and ambulance arrive. If you can help, give the police and doctors a hand and you will be appreciated for sure.
