How would you survive without your smartphone? For many of us, it’s the device we most depend on—looking at it hundreds of times a day. Have we become addicted to our phones?
The inventor of the first mobile phone, American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people should stop scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos, we just can’t give up the habit. There’s even a word—a phubber—to describe a person who ignores the real people around them because they are concentrating on their phones.
A study from King’s College London found young people they studied couldn’t control the amount of time they spent on their phone. Such addictive behaviour means that people become anxious or upset if they can’t have constant access, which can cause anxiety and mental health issues. Psychologist Jean Twenge says we’re all ashamed of “repeatedly checking our phone if we’re waiting for a text or getting really into social media, then looking up and realising that an hour has passed.”
Another study by the London School of Economics and Political Science suggests we don’t just look at our phones because we receive a text or email. The people they studied felt naturally eager to interact with their phone, just as a smoker would light a cigar. Prof. Saadi Lahlou, co-author of the study, told the BBC, “We must learn tricks to avoid the desire when we want to concentrate or have good social relations.”
One solution could be an app that rewards students for time spent away from their phones. Another option is replacing your smartphone with a dumbphone that has none of the attractive elements taking your attention away. But most importantly, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!
    8. What is Martin Cooper’s attitude to a phubber?
    A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Carefree. D. Neutral.
    9. How are young people affected by smartphone addiction?
    A. They may behave shamefully. B. They could lose control of screen time.
    C. They would have no access to social media. D. They may suffer physically and mentally.
    10. Why do people keep checking their phones according to paragraph 4?
    A. They have formed the habit. B. They just want to read a text or email.
    C. They want good social relations. D. They avoid the desire for communication.
    11. What can be the best solution to smartphone addition?
    A. Downloading rewarding apps. B. Making full use of a dumbphone.
    C. Interacting with people in real life. D. Replacing the attractive elements.
    【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. C

Facial recognition technology is mostly connected with uses such as the identification of human faces, but scientists believe they’ve found a new use for it — conserving seals (海豹).
A research team at Colgate University has developed SealNet, a database of seal faces created by taking pictures of seals in Maine’s Casco Bay. The team found the tool’s accuracy in identifying the ocean animals is close to 100%, which is a great achievement in an ecosystem home to thousands of seals.
Krista Ingram, a biology professor at Colgate, said the researchers are working on expanding their database to make it available to other scientists. She also said broadening the database to include rare species, such as the Hawaiian seal, could help save those species. And categorizing (分类) seal faces and using machine learning to identify them can also help scientists know clearly where in the ocean seals are. “Understanding their patterns really helps,” she said. “For moving ocean animals that move around a lot and are hard to photograph in the water, we need to be able to tell them apart,” she said.
SealNet is designed to detect the face in a picture, collect it and recognize it based on facial patterns such as eyes and nose shape. The Colgate team published its paper in April in the scientific journal. The paper said that the “image data that can be dealt with using SealNet software offers an important tool for ecological and behavioral studies of ocean animals in the developing field of conservation technology.”
Tjomme Dooper, head of partnerships and growth from IT company FruitPunch, said he was getting a few scientists to work on a challenge to make SealNet simpler. “What this does is help the biologists study the behavior of seals, and also population changes,” Dooper said. “Seals are an important indicator species for the ecosystem around them.”
    12. What is the new application of facial recognition technology?
    A. Protecting seals. B. Operating machines. C. Cleaning up oceans. D. Identifying human faces.
    13. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
    A. The process of categorizing seal faces. B. The ways of locating the ocean animals.
    C. The challenge of recognizing rare species. D. The benefits of broadening seal database.
    14. What can we know about SealNet from the last two paragraphs?
    A. It is used to publish papers. B. It is still in need of improvement.
    C. It is designed to picture seal faces. D. It is causing seals’ population changes.
    15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
    A. To voice his views on SealNet.
    B. To present a scientific research paper.
    C. To introduce a new use of facial recognition.
    D. To show the importance of developing technology.
    【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

    【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Krista Ingram, a biology professor at Colgate, said the researchers are working on expanding their database to make it available to other scientists. She also said broadening the database to include rare species, such as the Hawaiian seal, could help save those species. And categorizing (分类) seal faces and using machine learning to identify them can also help scientists know clearly where in the ocean seals are. “Understanding their patterns really helps,” she said. “For moving ocean animals that move around a lot and are hard to photograph in the water, we need to be able to tell them apart,” she said.(科尔盖特大学的生物学教授Krista Ingram表示,研究人员正在努力扩大他们的数据库,以便其他科学家可以使用。
根据最后一段中“Tjomme Dooper, head of partnerships and growth from IT company FruitPunch, said he was getting a few scientists to work on a challenge to make SealNet simpler.(信息技术公司FruitPunch的合作和增长负责人Tjomme Dooper说,他正在找一些科学家来解决一个挑战,让SealNet变得更简单。)”可推知,SealNet目前的使用存在一些问题,需要进一步改进。故选B。

Romero has a cafe in the park. It is called The Park Cafe. Romero thought the name was boring, but he couldn’t think of a better name. The Park Cafe is very popular in summer. Many people come to the park to walk their dogs.
Romero likes dogs and he is a smart businessman. Dogs cannot come into the cafe, but Romero has a special area for dogs outside. Dog walkers can tie their dogs up there. They can see their dogs through the window. Romero has bowls of water and treats for dogs. It is good for business.
One Saturday, the cafe was very busy. The dog area was full. Romero did not notice that one dog had been there for a very long time. The cafe closes at 4 pm. All the customers left. Romero was surprised to see that there was still one dog tied up outside. He looked around his cafe. It was empty. He went outside to talk to the dog.
“Where is your owner? Did your owner forget you and go home without you?” The dog shook its tail and barked.
Romero looked at the dog. It was a nice dog. It was clean and well fed. He looked at the dog’s collar (项圈). There was a tag (标签) on the collar with the name Lucien, and a telephone number. He went inside and called the telephone number. There was no answer. Romero did not know what to do. He went into the kitchen and found some leftover hamburger. He put it in the bowl and took it out to the dog.
After that, Romero went to the back of the cafe and threw the garbage bags. Surprisingly, he found a man lying on the grass. Romero thought he was dead, but he ran inside and called an ambulance. The ambulance came. Romero was right. The man was dead.“He died of a heart attack,” said the doctor.

【答案】 Later, the police came and confirmed the dog belonged to the dead man. The dog seemed so sad that it lowered its head and didn’t want to care anything. Romero knew it felt sad about its owner’s death. What would happen if the dog had no one to take care? Then the police advised that they could send it to the homeless animal center. Hearing the word, Romero felt sad and said that he could adopt this dog. Then the police agreed with him and told him to take good care of it. The man told the police he would try his best. Then the police left.
It was dark and Romero brought the dog into the cafe. The man knew it must be hungry, for it didn’t eat all the day long. However, the dog seemed that it had no appetite to eat anything. It lied on the ground and didn’t move. The man was so worried about it. He knew he must take it home and take a shower for it, which might make it comfortable enough to eat something. However, the dog didn’t want to leave, so the man had no choice but to take it home.
