Steph Clemence always intended to go to college. But life has a tendency to throw obstacles in the way. Growing up, she led a nomadic life because her mother, who divorced and remarried several times, was always on the move. Her mother had to support three daughters on a modest income, paying for college became out of the question.
Steph found a job, and tried to figure out what to do with such a life. The answer came when she spotted a thick folder, in which Steph found two stapled pages from her junior English teacher, Dorothy Clark.
One afternoon, Mrs. Clark walked into the classroom carrying a stack of stapled papers and instructed each student take one. The handout was titled “Mrs. Clark's Book List.” It wasn't homework, the teacher announced, but it could be a road map. She'd spent months creating a list of 153 fiction and nonfiction books, covering science, history, economics, politics, and literature. “Some of you might not go on to higher education,” Mrs. Clark said, “but you can continue to learn.”
She flipped the page to see the first book: Bulfinch's Mythology. And so it began. It was 1970. “I was hopeful and: determined to improve myself," Steph says. Starting at the top, she would read every book in the order they appeared.
Steph worked a variety of jobs, and she kept reading. Then she retired as an office manager for a dentist.
“Reading these books is an emotional and intellectual experience,” she says. “Each of the books has added something to who I am and how I see the world. I'm no expert, but I now have the background to see what it might mean.”
Now Steph is 70, and she never did get to college. But she has only four books left to read from the list. She expects to complete them sometime in 2023.

New York City delivery workers have to deal with an array of threats: speeding cars, changeable weather, and armed robbers. Lately, workers have added another to the list–their electric bikes bursting into flames.
The powerful lithium ion batteries(锂电池) used in small electric vehicles are responsible for a growing epidemic of fires. This year, there have been about 200 fires and six deaths, according to the New York City fire department. This month, an e-bike fire inside a Manhattan high-rise apartment became an inferno(火海) that injured nearly 40 people and forced firefighters to evacuate residents using ropes.
That's also become a daily concern for delivery workers such as Delores Solomon, a 64-year-old Brooklyn resident who has been working for Uber Eats for about two years. Solomon said she “lives in fear” that her vehicle might catch fire while it's charging or even while she’s riding it. Last year, while delivering food on her e-bike, Solomon hit a pothole(凹坑), causing the battery to fly out and hit the pavement, where it burst into flames. “It was like a big popping sound,” she told the Guardian. “It scared me—like, ‘if that would've happened on the bike, I would've been blown up.’”
On Monday, the city council held a hearing where legislators put forward bills to combat the battery fires, including a proposal to outlaw the sale of secondhand electric vehicle batteries, and another to ban all batteries that haven t been approved by a nationally recognized testing lab. If passed, that measure would force riders to use batteries such as those certified by the Illinois-based Underwriters Laboratory (UL). An Uber spokesperson in support of the new proposals provided a statement, saying “No one should have to choose between their safety and their livelihood.”
    28. How did the author stress E-bike threat in paragraph 2?
    A. By presenting relevant statistics.
    B. By analyzing the cause and effect.
    C. By quoting from relevant people.
    D. By comparing with different accidents.
    29. What does the author want to show by telling Solomon's story?
    A. Blue-collar workers have difficulty in making a living.
    B. Delivery workers face the potential danger of E-bike.
    C. People lack the awareness of traffic safety rules.
    D. Uber Eats E-bikes sacrifice quality for its profit.
    30. What measures did the lawmakers try to take on the problem?
    A. Raising awareness of the E-bike threats.
    B. Increasing the income of delivery workers.
    C. Banning the use of all electric vehicles.
    D. Requiring E-bike batteries to be certified.
    31. Which of the following can be the best title?
    A. E-bike Batteries Fires Scares New Yorkers
    B. A New Proposal: Should We Ban E-bikes?
    C. Unknown Dangers of Lithium-ion Batteries
    D. New York Delivery Workers Fight for Rights
    D
“We are here because of charcoal (木炭),” announced Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan at a conference in Dar es Salaam, as she unveiled ambitious new plans to boost clean energy use within the country by up to 90% over ten years.
According to new data, the total emissions(排放) from household food consumption account for the equivalent of 1.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year. A household's carbon footprint related to food consumption is largely driven by its cookstoves and fuels used for cooking. Along with Tanzania, one-third of the global population relies on biomass—wood, charcoal, or animal dung(粪便) for household cooking.
Burning charcoal and these other “dirty” cooking fuels indoors generates black powder, and household air pollution that is responsible for premature deaths and illnesses. In addition, women and children may spend up to 20 hours per week in collecting firewood and four hours per day cooking over traditional stoves—opportunity costs that may come at the expense of school attendance or work and hobby interests. The costs will only increase as forest degradation forces women and children farther afield to find firewood to cook and warm their homes.
These significant health and climate impacts of household cooking help explain the motivation for countries like Tanzania to come up with aggressive plans to stop using dirty cookstoves and fuels.
There are a wide variety of technological solutions and concerted donor campaigns to facilitate the switch to cleaner cooking, but the reality is that total investments in the clean cooking sector are still far short of the estimated $ 10 billion per year.
Barriers can and should be removed through thoughtful, context-specific policies. Leaders and policymakers in Sharm EI Sheikh should follow Tanzania's example and commit to effective policies that will develop innovative and locally appropriate technologies and fuels, and secure long -term funding to ensure universal clean cooking access by 2030.
    32. What does Tanzania's President's words mean in paragraph 1?
    A. Charcoal is what we need right now.
    B. Our survival lies in the use of charcoal.
    C. Charcoal problem is the focus of attention.
    D. It is charcoal that helps us people keep fit.
    33. What is not the consequence of cooking with biomass according to the text?
    A. Indoor air pollution. B. Gender- based violence.
    C. Kids' absence from school. D. Forest degradation.
    34. What is the barrier to clean cooking?
    A. Lack of donor campaigns. B. High fuel costs.
    C. Inefficient government. D. Funding shortfalls.
    35. What can we learn about the policies in the last paragraph?
    A. They should be aimed at poor countries.
    B. They will lead to a reduction in fuel use.
    C. They should be carefully considered.
    D. They call for continuous observation.

It was a happy Tuesday afternoon. After a long day of classes, the students were now hurrying back home. Maaz put an arm around Hamza's neck. “It's the first time I scored full marks in the math exam you helped me prepare for,” Maaz added a little giggle. “My mum will be happy, Thank you!”
Hamza and Maaz were close friends ever since they were kids, but they were opposites. While Hamza was very confident, a born genius and a part of all social activities at school, Maaz was more of an introvert. He preferred to stay in his comfort zone and wasn't very strong academically but was very hardworking.
The next day, Hamza had been sleeping through all classes. Maaz came over and thumped his back, “what's wrong bro?”
Hamza opened one drowsy eyelid, “I played video games all night, I'm exhausted.” Maaz tugged at his shirt, “You have done the history assignment, right?”
Hamza suddenly sat up and held his head. It had completely escaped his mind. “Maaz, can you let me go through your work? I just have to check how long it will take me,” Hamza frowned in worry.
“Sure buddy,” Maaz added as he handed over his assignment and dissolved into the crowd of students rushing for recess.
In history class the next day, Ms Afsheen looked furious. In a voice that wasn't loud, but echoed through the silent classroom, she said: “Maaz Ali, stand up.”
Ms. Afsheen pursed her lips and glared at him. “Maaz thinks that he is so smart that he will copy Hamza's entire assignment and the teacher won't even know, Hamza 's face turned pale.
“Class, today I will tell you the consequences of a student who tries to cheat. Maaz gets a zero on his assignment,” Ms. Afsheen announced.
Maaz stood with his head bowed, glistening tears silently dropping to the floor. Hamza was looking everywhere, but at him. He couldn't face his friend.

Hamza was going through a battle inside him because it was he who had copied Maaz’s work. It was he who should have been given a zero, not Maaz. Hamza shivered at the thought of it. Suddenly he overheard Rayyan ask, “Why didn’t you tell the truth to the teacher?” Maaz shushed him, “It’s okay. I’m not selling my friend for some marks. I will study harder next time.” Hamza sat down in shock. Maaz’s words had stirred a realization in him. Was scoring zero marks in an assignment really worth his friendship? After all, it was his own fault that he played video games through the night and didn’t do his homework. He knew Maaz really worked hard for the assignment, but Maaz let all his hard work go to waste, only to protect a friend’s dignity.
With new courage filling his heart, Hamza walked to the staffroom in search of Ms Afsheen. He had to confess his mistake. His hands crossed in humility, he owned up to the teacher about everything that had happened. Ms Afsheen nodded her head in approval, “Yes, it’s my fault too. I shouldn’t have blamed Maaz without getting to the bottom of it.” She then appreciated Hamza for taking responsibility for the mistake he made. Ms Afsheen did give Hamza a zero on the assignment. Hamza rushed to the playground looking for Maaz. With tears in his eyes, he apologised to him and told him that he had owned up to the teacher. The best friends embraced each other and, with beaming faces, went to play football before recess could end.

根据 she led a nomadic life because her mother, who divorced and remarried several times, was always on the move.
根据“Some of you might not go on to higher education,” Mrs. Clark said, “but you can continue to learn.” “it could be a road map.”
根据“Reading these books is an emotional and intellectual experience,” 可知,Steph 收获很多,读了书单上书,不仅增长了知识,改变了她的命运,而且拓宽了眼界,丰富了情感。

    29. B。细节理解题,根据第三段第一句“That’s also become a daily concern for delivery workers such as Delores Solomon,”和第二句“Solomon said she “lives in fear” that her vehicle might catch fire”, Solomon 作为快递员代表表达了对于电动自行车电池的潜在威胁的担忧。
    30. D。细节理解题,根据第四段第二句“If passed, that measure would force riders to use batteries such as those certified by the Illinois-based Underwriters Laboratory (UL).”,立法者们的法案一旦通过,电动自行车使用者将被强制要求使用认证过的电池。

    D
根据第二段 “equivalent of 1.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year” “one-third of the global population relies on biomass — wood, charcoal, or animal dung(粪便) for household cooking” 家庭烹饪排放的二氧化碳量每年高达13亿吨,碳足迹主要由其炉灶和烹饪燃料引起。
根据”the reality is that total investments in the clean cooking sector are still far short of the estimated $10 billion per year.”
Chances are you may lose a lot of good friends from your life due to them.
We all are fallen into the trap of gossiping.
Stop right there and rephrase your sentence, correct and explain.
