Architectural:Vanishing Points
While we like to think of architecture existing purely in the real world, emerging designers and architects are using platforms like Instagram to create structures in the virtual world. This collection of works, which range from the practical to the fantastical, are all by architects who have gathered significant social media followings.

The largest UK exhibition to date of American painter Alice Neel's work will bring together her figurative pieces from across her 60-year career. Neel went against the popular grain by painting figures when abstract works were most popular, and she painted subjects that other artists ignored—pregnant women, labour leaders, Black children, civil rights activists and strange performers. It's high time we had a major show of her work in London, and the Barbican has duly provided.

Age is just a number, and for Alan Camsell that couldn’t be more true. At 89, the Penrhyn Bay Strollers’ goalkeeper, and his teammates, believe he’s the oldest shot-stopper in the football league.
And now he’s been nominated(提名) in Sky Bet’s search for Real Football No. 1s. The UK’s No. 1 betting app is on the hunt for those at grassroots level who have made a special contribution to the beautiful game.
Alan says, “My wife told me when we had our first grandchild in our forties, ‘It’s alright being old, but don’t look old and don’t behave old.’ I’ve taken that to heart. Problems are there to overcome. I’ve had hip and knee replacements, cataract operations, and had a pacemaker put in just a few months ago. I’ve also got a hernia, but I just play on.”
The golden-age goalkeeper’s exploits on the football field have attracted TV coverage worldwide, and his record of the oldest shot-stopper remains unmatched. But incredibly, Alan didn’t have the chance to be a goalkeeper until he was 39.
“I’ve always followed the game, but the family business meant working weekends. So when evening five-a-side came around, I jumped at the chance to play,” he says.
While most players wear shin pads(护腿) and the occasional knee support, Alan has to go the extra mile to ensure he can play pain free during the football matches for his Welsh-based club.
Despite his health problems, Alan insists he’s got no intention of hanging up his boots any time soon. He adds, “I’ll play on forever and I’ve got no other plans. As long as the team’s prepared to put up with me, I’ll keep going.”
24.What do we know about Alan?
A.He took over the family business at a very young age.
B.He stepped over physical barriers to be a footballer.
C.He gave up his career owing to his various diseases.
D.He became a skilled goalkeeper when he was a teenager.
25.What does the underlined word “exploits” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Achievements. B.Arrangements. C.Strengths. D.Strategies.
26.Which words can best describe Alan?
A.Warm-hearted but mean. B.Talented but careless.
C.Determined and devoted. D.Flexible and caring.
27.What does the author want to convey in the text?
A.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
B.A candle lights others and consumes itself.
C.Genius is nothing but labor and diligence.
D.The longest journey begins with the first step.

Going green is good for business. Consumers are often willing to pay more for eco-friendly products than other comparable products on the market, according to market research. But not all environmental claims are created equally. “Greenwashing” is a form of misinformation often used to fascinate an aspiring green consumer. Companies promising to be sustainable, or biodegradable sometimes fail to meet the promises they make to consumers.
Greenwashing is particularly common in the fashion industry, says Maxine Bédat, director of The New Standard Institute, a think tank focused on improving the industry’s environmental standards. Being sustainable is the latest trend and a way for the industry to attract consumers. “I think we’re at the top of greenwashing in the industry,” she says.
Retailers will mislead consumers by distracting them from a company’s larger issues. For example, a large retailer might roll out a new line of products, such as jeans, that uses less water and therefore theoretically has less of an environmental impact than the other clothes the company sells. “You think ‘Oh that sounds great,’” Bédat says. But that same company might ignore water usage in the rest of their products lines, while doing nothing to address the other ways that their production might be harming the environment.
When it comes to fashion, Bérdat says to rethink shopping habits. After all, buying a new sweater labeled “carbon neutral” still produces more carbon than wearing a sweater already in your closet. She notes, “The most sustainable thing you can do as a consumer is wear the things you have more.”
As more companies look to cash in on sustainable marketing, governments are beginning to take more action to protect consumers. In New York, The Fashion Act would require fashion companies operating in the state to obey the Paris Climate Agreement. A new law brought forth by members of the European Union would more strictly regulate environmental claims and sustainability labels slapped on products sold in Europe.
28.What is the purpose of greenwashing?
A.To advocate proper use of water. B.To introduce green ways to wash clothes.
C.To reduce the impact on environment. D.To attract those eco-friendly customers.
29.What does the example in paragraph 3 present?
A.A new trend in fashion. B.A new kind of product.
C.A way of greenwashing. D.A large issue of a company.
30.What is Bérdat’s attitude towards greenwashing?
A.Disapproving. B.indifferent. C.Tolerant. D.Unclear.
31.Why did European Union put forward a new law?
A.To enhance the quality of products. B.To raise people’s awareness of going green.
C.To protect customers from greenwashing. D.To encourage carbon-neutral product lines.
D
A school science project by a group of students in Canada has led to an important discovery: EpiPens might cease to function normally in space.
EpiPens, the auto-injectors (注射器) that deliver life-saving medicine called epinephrine, help with severe allergic(过敏) reactions. The epinephrine opens up airways, maintains heat function and blood pressure and calms the allergic reaction so the person can breathe.
The students working on Program for Gifted Learners (PGL), were curious about how radiation in space would affect the molecular(分子)structure of epinephrine. As part of a NASA initiative called “Cubes in Space,” which launches science experiments students come up with, they sent two cubes with samples of both pure epinephrine and EpiPen solution into space. One on a rocket and the other on a balloon. With the cubes too small to hold an entire EpiPen the students had consulted with Paul Mayer, a chemist at University of Ottawa and eventually figured out a way to get the EpiPen solution into a specially-made bottle.
The samples were analyzed in a lab before and after returning to Earth. The team found the pure epinephrine samples only returned 87 percent pure — the other 13 percent had turned into poisonous chemicals. And no epinephrine was found in the EpiPen solution samples.
Mayer was skeptical at first that the samples would show any signs of decomposition, but he was blown away by the “dramatic” results. “It’s brilliant,” he tells Global News. “The first part of doing science is asking the right questions, and they asked a fantastic question.”
The students’ findings could have real-world implications for space travel and astronauts’ safety. Excited to have made such a groundbreaking discovery, the students plan to do the experiment again to check their results. They’re also working on designing a capsule to protect the EpiPen solution in space.
“You feel like you’re making a real change,” says student Benjamin Sum, who wants to build rockets when he grows up. “It feels like it’s just adults. But kids can actually be involved.”
32.What can EpiPens do for human allergic reaction?
A.Cure it for good. B.Detect its early signs.
C.Stimulate it in time. D.Relieve it temporarily.
33.Why were the samples of pure epinephrine and EpiPen solution launched into space?
A.To break down the epinephrine.
B.To test epinephrine’s effectiveness.
C.To integrate innovation into clinical study.
D.To confirm they can stand space environments.
34.What quality of the students impresses Mayer most?
A.Their spirit of commitment. B.Their unity and teamwork.
C.Their spirit of scientific inquiry. D.Their sincerity and integrity.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Kids Find out EpiPens May Not Work in Space
B.PGL: A Program Devoted to Astronomy Research
C.Scientists Team up with Pupils for Space Exploration
D.EpiPens: An Advanced Device Applied to Save Lives

How to Quiet a Complainer
Have you ever suffered your mother’s complaints about her aches and pains? Lengthy complaints will ruin the quality of your time together. ____36____ Actually there are some ways to get a complainer to stop without starting an argument.
Change the subject. Some complainers will switch topics if you shift the conversation in a direction that interests them. If your neighbor is complaining about the phone company, tell her about an unexpected call you received from an old friend. If your coworker is complaining about your boss, ask whether he met the new employee. ____37____
Summarize the complaint. If your complainer keeps repeating himself, he may stop if you show that you’re listening. ____38____ Using “I” statements rather than “you” statements show that you’re interested rather than trying to shut the person down. Avoid saying the word complaining. Saying you hear their dissatisfaction gets the points across.
Try to be honest. When you have things to do, tell the complainer that you must cut the conversation short. ____39____ You can simply be honest, even saying you need to move on so the conversation doesn’t bring you down – especially if it’s someone who’s complained to you many times before.

67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Ballet was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a top college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge.
One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers (拳击手) training inside the boxing ring. She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase: BOXING CLUB TRYOUT (选拔).That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep up with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve her own path.
The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, "You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly."
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does 'only for boys' mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork and punching (击打) abilities with other candidates. Boxing didn’t come natural to Kelly, but she had made up her mind to stick with her choice.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then Kelly began her training for the tryout, keeping it a secret from her mom.

第二节 (满分25分)
One possible version:
Then Kelly began her training, keeping it a secret from her mom. Every day after school, Kelly dashed to the boxing gym, occupying herself with the intense training. Stretching legs, practicing her footwork and improving endurance had become the bittersweet routine of her life. Even when she was made fun of by boys in the gym, she bit her lip tightly and continued her training. Finally, the tryout came. Extremely nervous though, she stepped into the boxing ring, moved fast and punched hard to the surprise of other candidates. After the tryout, Kelly left the gym confidently, knowing she did her best.
The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. To her delight, Kelly found her name on the list. Thrilled, she shared the news with Serena, both ready to reveal the secret to their mom. At dinner that day, Kelly gathered her courage and said to her mom, “I’m sorry, mom. I’ve made the boxing team and I’m ready to carve my own path.” At first, a flicker of disbelief and shock crossed her mom's face, but after a long, heart-to-heart talk, she gave Kelly a bear hug and whispered softly, “I’m so proud of you for being yourself.”

【原文】W: Good afternoon, I’d like to share with you about working from home. Before COVID-19, my company believed that working in the office was good for productivity. But after over a year of working from home, many of us are starting to question traditional ways of working. Our boss did some research on the issue and discovered that 80% of employees have enjoyed working from home. 42% felt that they’ve been just as productive as they were in an office, and 28% felt they were more productive at home. For me, one of the best things was not having to travel an hour to and from work each day. This meant I got more sleep, and had more time for family and hobbies. I also didn’t have many questions from co-workers, so it was easier to focus, and get more work done in less time. But there were problems, too. I felt lonely at times and having online meetings could be very upset! Worst of all, it could be difficult to stop working because I didn’t have to leave the office. In the future, I’d like a flexible approach to work from home several days a week and in the office for the rest.
