For four months, puppy Indiana miraculously survived in the woods with a shattered shoulder. She was taken for a wolf and shot while running wild with her mother, Dakota. As a result of the gunshot, Indiana lost not only her leg but also her mother, as the two were sent to different adoption groups. While Indiana was learning to walk on three legs down south, Dakota was 1,000 miles north in New England.

Dakota found her forever home with me on Long Island. I have experience with Nordic breeds, and Dakota, a husky-malamute mix, just needed attention and someone who understood how to approach her. When I first read Dakota’s Petfinder bio, it mentioned that the puppy she’d been running with was shot, and, I assumed, killed. I’m a broadcast news journalist, so I did some research and came across a story from a South Carolina TV news outlet about a puppy that recently had her front leg cut off because of an old gunshot wound. There was no mistaking it—she was a spitting image of Dakota. Her puppy wasn’t killed by the gunshot, just badly injured. I vowed to bring the three-legged puppy home. As I learned throughout my journey to reunite mother and pup, they both needed each other. Back home, Dakota would let out these downright mournful howls on the deck, as if she was calling for her puppy to come back. And potential adopters for Indiana were required to have a six-foot fence because she kept jumping the one at her rescue in South Carolina.

When I finally adopted Indiana, the reunion was magical. Dakota was ecstatic. She couldn’t stop licking her puppy’s face. The love between them is as heartwarming as their story is heartbreaking. Dakota has since stopped her mournful howls. Indiana has never tried to jump my fence. These once-feral dogs now jump onto my bed, lie on the sofa with me, curl up in my lap, and lick me constantly. In spite of their having lived in the wild, the dogs have no aggression whatsoever. I am constantly amazed by how sweet and gentle they are.

    4. What happened to Indiana and Dakota after the gunshot?

    A. They ran wild in the woods after a wolf.

    B. Indiana was unable to walk due to her disability.

    C. Indiana was adopted by a journalist on Long Island.

    D. They were separated because of different adoptions.

    5. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

    A. Indiana took after her mother Dakota a lot.

    B. The author adopted Indiana for her wound.

    C. The author knew Dakota’s characteristics from her Petfinder bio.

    D. Indiana kept jumping over the fence to answer her mother’s call.

    6. What does the underlined word ecstatic in the third paragraph mean?

    A. Overjoyed. B. Indifferent. C. Satisfied. D. Disappointed.

    7. What is the purpose of this article?

    A. To create an image of a tough puppy.

    B. To call on people to love and protect dogs.

    C. To share a heartwarming story of two dogs.

    D. To introduce the great deed of the dogs’ owner.

    C

Microsoft is reportedly delighted with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a natural-language artificial-intelligence program capable of generating text that reads as if a human wrote it. Taking advantage of easy access to finance over the past decade, companies and venture-capital funds invested billions in an AI arms race, resulting in a technology that can now be used to replace humans across a wider range of tasks. This could be a disaster not only for workers, but also for consumers and even investors.

The problem for workers is obvious: there will be fewer jobs requiring strong communication skills, and thus fewer positions that pay well. Cleaners, drivers, and some other manual workers will keep their jobs, but everyone else should be afraid. Consider customer service. Instead of hiring people to interact with customers, companies will increasingly rely on generative AIs like ChatGPT to comfort angry callers with clever and soothing words. Fewer entry-level jobs will mean fewer opportunities to start a career.

Consumers, too, will suffer. Chatbots may be fine for handling entirely routine questions, but it is not routine questions that generally lead people to call customer service. When there is a real issue – like an airline coming to a standstill or a pipe bursting in your basement – you want to talk to a well-qualified, empathetic professional with the ability to tackle problems. You do not want to be put on hold for eight hours, but nor do you want to speak immediately to a talkative but ultimately useless chatbot.

Today, the predictive power of algorithms (算法) should be used to help people, rather than to replace them. If AIs can offer recommendations for human consideration, the ability to use such recommendations wisely will be recognized as a valuable human skill. Unfortunately, these opportunities are being neglected. Everyone is focused on using AI to cut labor costs, with little concern not only for the immediate customer experience but also for the future of American consumption power.

    8. What kind of employees are most likely to lose their jobs?

    A. City cleaners. B. Taxi drivers.

    C. Delivery men. D. Telephone operators.

    9. What’s disadvantage of a chatbot?

    A. It can’t handle realistic problems.

    B. It needs real persons to operate on it.

    C. It doesn’t have ability to comfort customers.

    D. It can’t cope with routine questions well enough.

    10. What is author’s attitude towards AI-based products?

    A. Delighted but suspicious.

    B. Concerned and negative.

    C. Supportive but cautious.

    D. Neutral and indifferent.

    11. Which is the best title for the story?

    A. What’s Wrong with ChatGPT?

    B. Dangerous ChatGPT:Troublemaker.

    C. What’s ChatGPT?

    D. Future of AI Has Come.

    D

On the edge of the Atlantic, there is much more water on islands. Experts say the Uists (尤伊斯特群岛) in the UK are on the front line of climate change and some of those who call this home are already adapting to their changing landscape. Donald MacPhee, an islander told BBC, “We seem to be getting a lot more rain—very unpredictable, but back in my father’s days you could guarantee that you’d have plenty of dry weather in August. But now it’s very unpredictable.” This low-lying watery landscape is weak to changes in our climate—with predictions that the sea level here could rise by as much as half a metre over the next few decades.

And that’s not the only challenge facing these islands which are so exposed to wet and stormy weather. Professor Stewart Angus, a coastal ecologist said, “A lot of the land actually lies below the level of the sea for much of the tidal cycle (潮汐). Secondly, you have rising sea levels. Thirdly, you have rising rainfall in winter. And you have the great difficulty in a very low-lying environment of removing that water.”

The airport here provides a lifeline service to islanders. A million pounds has been spent on the latest work to protect the runway, which ends just metres from the shore. At the islands’ arts centre, a picture of a rising line is shown. Andy Mackinnon, an artist told us, “So, the line represents a symbolic level that the sea will rise to. I hope that it does make people think about what we’re doing.”

And from the children here, out taking care of their local beach, messages in English and Gaelic (盖尔语) of their hopes and fears are being sent to the UN climate summit in Glasgow. “Stop sea levels rising. We could be under the water soon.” These small islands hope for big commitments from world leaders to lessen the worst that climate change might bring.

    12. What does Paragraph 1 imply?

    A. All islands have been under the water. B. The weather here now is still predictable.

    C. Islands are at risk due to climate change. D. The sea level will rise by 5 metres in decades.

13 What is the big challenge for islanders now according to Paragraph 2?

    A. Dry and hot weather. B. Irregular tidal cycle.

    C. Protecting the runway. D. Getting rid of the water.

    14. What is Andy Mackinnon’s attitude towards the islands?

    A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Pessimistic. D. Relieved.

    15. What might be talked about in the paragraph following the text?

    A. How the islands are flooded. B. What help UN can provide for islanders.

    C. What life children here live. D. What effect climate change may bring.
