Peppered mth caterpillars (桦尺蠖毛虫)live nrth f the equatr. But if yu’ve never seen ne, dn’t feel bad: They’re experts at blending in (融为一体). Each caterpillar lks like the branch it stays n, straightening its bdy int a stick-like shape. It als changes its clr t match the branch’s clr, whether white, green r brwn.
Accrding t a paper published in Cmmunicatins Bilgy, the caterpillars sense the clr f their surrundings nt nly with their eyes but als with their skin.

Each caterpillar hatches tiny and black, and in its early days is blwn arund by the wind. Once it falls n a plant, it must disguise itself t avid being sptted by birds.
“I was a bit disbelieving that they culd change that nly using their eyes,” Dr. Saccheri said.
Amy Eacck, a graduate student in Dr. Saccheri’s lab decided t investigate. First, she tested the caterpillars’ eyes fr light-sensitive prteins called psins (视蛋白). “We did the skin as kind f a negative cntrl,” said Dr. Eacck. “But then we fund they were expressed in the skin as highly as they were in the head.”
That’s when she suggested blindflding the caterpillars. The researchers culd cver their eyes, place them n different-clred dwels (木钉) , and see if they still changed t match.
“I thught it was kind f a crazy idea,” Dr. Saccheri said. The blindflding itself was a difficult task, invlving black paint, a tiny paintbrush, a micrscpe and lts f patience, Dr. Eacck said. Caterpillars mlt (蜕皮) several times ver their lives, which required that they be blindflded again frequently.
But Dr. Eacck persisted, eventually testing mre than 300 caterpillars. Over and ver
again, the blindflded caterpillars successfully changed clr t blend in.
Many questins remain, but the behavir alne impressed the researchers. Dr. Eacck said, “I remember turning t Ilik ne day and saying, ‘Yu knw what? The caterpillars are cler than the mths.’” “Yes. They’re pretty amazing,” Dr. Saccheri agreed.
What can we learn abut peppered mth caterpillars? A.They feed n fresh tree branches.
They can be fund easily acrss the wrld.
They can adapt t different envirnments.
They change their bdy clr t match living cnditins.
