第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分 37.5 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、 D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Antarctica
Going to Antarctica, one of the remotest destinations on the planet,
is not an easy (or affordable) endeavor. Perhaps the difficulty is part of the attraction—the seventh continent remains at the top of many
travelers’ wish lists. The striking white desert, with its dramatic, snowy peaks and vibrant turquoise water, as well as its exotic wildlife,
including emperor penguins and Weddell seals, can truly offer a
once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Hawaii
Hawaii is underrated. To be sure, it is a gorgeous place with
breathtaking sunrise and sunset, and every beach is seemingly prettier than the next, but its beauty goes much deeper than its preternatural
第 3 页 共 16 页学科网(北京)股份有限公司
appearance. Extraordinary beaches—some even boast green and black sand (Papakōlea Beach and Punalu’u Beach, respectively)—have their expected
appeal, but visitors who take time to venture out away from the coast
quickly discover Hawaii’s charms are everywhere.
Canada
Skiing, surfing, hiking and the Northern Lights, eclectic cuisine, world-class shopping, diverse and rich cultures—this is Canada. The 13
provinces and territories make up the world’s second-largest country by the total area. It has something wonderful for every type of traveler.
Nature lovers take solace in mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and the
Atlantic or Pacific coastlines while sophisticated eaters nosh at
Michelin-starred restaurants and hole-in-the-wall restaurants alike.
Singapore
Travelers don’t want to spend any more time in an airport than they have to. But Singapore Changi Airport is not an ordinary airport. While
the rest of the world was staying at home, Singaporean locals had paid
to hang out at Changi Airport, whether it was co-working in one of the
lounges or camping alongside the world’s highest indoor waterfall, which opened in 2019.
21. Which place would you like to choose if you are an animal lover?
A. Hawaii. B. Antarctica. C. Singapore. D. Canada.
22. What is special about Canada from the text?
A. It can almost satisfy all kinds of travelers.

Andy Kong has worked very hard to get to where he is today. He credits becoming a millionaire by 20 to his strict Asian parents who tutored him
at a young age by working for the family.
Kong, of Danville, Virginia, started working when he was only nine. English wasn’t a strong suit for Andy’s parents, and that’s where he
was able to assist his family the most. After school and on weekends he would help out at their family-owned restaurant and nail salons. Not only
did he do the labor work, but he was also involved in creating online ads. This was his introduction to the world of online business.
Andy started his Amazon business in the eighth grade, when he learned about Amazon. Dropshipping (代发货模式) from a kid he saw on Instagram,
he got inspired and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the store
eventually got shut down because he was impatient with the growth. Instead of considering it a failure, he viewed this experience as a life lesson
and learned from his mistakes. Meanwhile, his parents never stopped trying to talk him into focusing on school and their retail business.
“The biggest challenge when starting a business is getting someone tobelieveinyou,”Andysays.Hepushedthroughanddidthingsforhimself
even when his loved ones discouraged it.
In 2019, Andy met his now business partners, and together, they created
an Amazon management company called Project WiFi. This Project has proven to be extremely successful. They currently help over 55 clients run their
online businesses, and plan to help many more in the future.
When asked about the secret to his success, Andy says, “Learning to sacrifice whether that’s family, friends, or soccer game for a single
goal is the only way to succeed, rather than attempting multiple things. If it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well with no shortcuts.”

It is a well-known fact that plastic bottles, which take hundreds of years to rot, are harmful to our environment. However, efforts by
environmentalists to encourage consumers to switch to alternatives, like
water fountains or reusable bottles, have not been very effective. The U.S. alone uses over 50 million plastic bottles annually, 80% of which
end up in landfills.
To try to stop that, Rodrigo García González, Pierre Paslier and
Guillaume Couche from the Imperial College London have been working on a revolutionary solution — water wrapped inside an eatable container
made mostly from seaweed. All the customer has to do to relieve his/her thirst is pop the entire drop into the mouth.
The inventors, who have been working on the Ooho bubble since 2014, use a simple two-step cooking process called spherification (球化) to
create the delicatecontainer. They begin by dipping a frozen ball of water or juice into a chemical solution (溶液). This helps form a layer around
第 6 页 共 16 页学科网(北京)股份有限公司
the liquid. The ball is then absorbed in a solution made from seaweed extract. This creates a second layer, helping strengthen the structure
so that the water or juice does not leak. In addition to saving our
environment, the biodegradable (可降解的) packaging costs just two cents each, making it cheaper to produce than plastic.
After three years of perfecting the design, the inventors, who
recently raised over 1 million USD from a financial activity, are ready
to bring the Ooho bubble to local market. However, there are a few
challenges that still need to be overcome before the product’s launch. In addition to getting accustomed to the taste of the covering, each
eatable container contains just a mouthful of water, requiring consumers
to drink multiple bubbles to relieve their thirst. There is also the issue
of finding an eco-friendly packaging to transport the bubbles so that they remain clean and do not burst. Hopefully, the inventors will find ways
to handle the issues so that we can reduce, or perhaps even remove, plastic bottles.
28.Why was the Ooho bubble created?
A.To test a newly-designed material.
B.To change consumers’ drinking habit.
C.To reduce pollution caused by plastic.
D.To take a share of drinking water industry.
29.What will the inventors probably do next?
A.Solve some specific problems of the product.
B.Collect more money to expand production.
C.Distribute the Ooho bubble to global market.
D.Advertise the advantages of the Ooho bubble.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards the Ooho bubble’s launch?
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful. C.Confident. D.Opposed.
31.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.Scientists Work out a New Kind of Water

AnaudienceofpatientswithAlzheimer’s(老年痴呆症)diseaselistens with concentrated attention as a young woman sings the French song “Beau
Soir”.
Dean, 76, once taught music at Chicago’s Senn High School, invented and sold his own music education system and sang with the Chicago Symphony
Chorus. Now, like many patients with Alzheimer’s, he is, to some extent, lost in the past, a stranger to the present. But when the music plays,
he smiles and is transported to a place of beauty, where everything still makes sense.
In recent years, music therapy(疗法) has grown in popularity for its
seeming ability to help calm people with dementia(痴呆) and reconnect them with their memories. Now researchers are testing whether music played for
residents of a suburban nursing home can be therapeutic, whether it can improve cognition (认知), conversation and relationships.
A person with dementia can recede(倒退) so far that he or she is no longer responsive, suggesting personality and consciousness (意识) have
been lost. But in his book, Dr. Oliver Sacks wrote that he’d seen such patients shake or cry while listening to music. “Once one has seen such
responses,” he wrote, “one knows that there is still a self to be called upon, even if music, and only music, can do the calling.”
For some people with dementia, music therapy has been shown to improve attention and cognition to improve behavior while reducing the use of
drugs and to reduce anxiety and depression. Singing songs can help refresh specific memories that otherwise might have been forgotten completely,
experts say.
Attracted by the potential benefits, Dr. Borna Bonakdarpour, a
第 8 页 共 16 页学科网(北京)股份有限公司
neurologist, put together a music therapy study. Each week for 12 weeks, the musicians who were specially trained, held concerts for 10 residents
and applied their skills to therapy, often by interacting with patients
during performances and getting them to beat on drums, sing and dance.
A similar group of residents in another nursing home went without the therapy to compare results.
“Music therapy is gaining more confidence now as an intervention,
so this is a very exciting time,” Bonakdarpour said. “We thought when
people get Alzheimer’s, they’re done because there’s no medicine to cure it. But there’s so much we can do to have an impact and improve their quality of life.”
32. Why is Les Dean mentioned at the beginning?
A. To present his amazing life before he got Alzheimer’s disease.
B. To inspire the people who also suffered from the disease.
C. To tell the readers that he was a music lover.
D. To show the surprising function of music.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Dr. Oliver Sacks believed music could call upon a self in Alzheimer’ s patients.
B. When patients are nonresponsive, music could hardly have any effect
on them.
C. Dr. Oliver Sacks and his team have tested music to improve the patients’ conversation.
D. It is obvious that singing can make the patients’ memories back to normal.
34. What can be known from Bonakdarpour’s research?
A. The music therapy study has been successfully completed.
B. The patients show no interest in music therapy.
C. Music therapy can help to improve the patients’ life quality.
D. Music therapy has a negative effect on the patients as an intervention.

35. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage?
A. The terrible disease can be cured by music therapy.
B. Music is beneficial to the people lost in Alzheimer’s darkness.
C. People gradually realize the benefits of music.
D. Everyone should fall in love with music.

Criticism is harmful to healthy relationships. ___36___ First, work
on changing your own behavior. Then, find effective ways to communicate if someone bothers you.
Changing Your Behavior
●Think before you speak. ___37___ Sometimes, it’s best to let small indiscretions (轻率的行为) go. Try taking a few deep breaths and leaving
the room instead of criticizing.
●Separate the individual from their actions. If you work on
separating the person from the action, you may naturally want to criticize less. As you realize you cannot judge a person’s character based on a
single choice or decision, you will be unable to call someone out for being rude or disrespectful.
●Focus on positives. Oftentimes, being critical results from howyou’ re choosing to see a situation. Everyone has shortcomings. However, the
vast majority of people have good qualities that outweigh bad ones.
___38___
Communicating More Effectively
●___39___ Some people have issues that may need addressing. However, feedback is very different from criticism. When addressing an issue, focus
on suggestions you can make to help another person improve, which is more
effective than criticizing.
●Ask for what you want directly. Inefficient communication often

results in heavy criticism. ___40___ Make sure to ask for what you want in a direct, respectful manner. This will eliminate (消除) the need for
criticism.
●Consider the other party’s perspective. If you criticize others too often, you may be shutting out the other person’s point of view. Try
to step in another person’s shoes before criticizing and you may get some new and special ideas.
A.Give feedback rather than criticism.
B.However, there are ways to avoid criticism.
C.Trytofocusonaperson’spositivequalitiesovertheirnegativeones. D.If you find yourself making assumptions about a person’s character,
stop yourself.
E.If you’re not telling someone what you want, that person cannot be expected to know.
F.Criticism should, ideally, be working towards an effective solution to a negative situation.
G.When you want to dish out criticism, pause and consider whether you really need to say anything.

Smile for the Camera
He had beautiful features, half-Arab and half-African: large
almond-shaped brown eyesand a delicate nose. His hair was black, cut short. For a refugee (难民), he was in good shape physically, though dirty and
barefoot.
He stood in front of my camera and stared. “You will find my parents,” he ordered. “I can’t promise,” I replied and focused the camera on his
face, “Smile.” “Then I can’t smile.” I snapped a photo of the boy
and wrote down his vital information: Maiga Fotana, age 10; his parents’ names; his village. “Bye,” I said when I finished and he walked away silently.
Until sundown, I shot pictures of hundreds of children. We would post their pictures wherever we could in the war-affected country, hoping
someone would recognize a little face and come to the camp to claim the child.
第 14 页 共 16 页学科网(北京)股份有限公司
The next morning, Maiga was first in line. “Did you find my parents?”
he asked. “No,” I said, “I just took your picture yesterday. I haven’ t even developed it yet.”
“My parents willbe looking for me, so Ineed to take another picture,” he said. I loaded my camera. “One photo is enough,” I said, “We’ll
make copies and post them all over. Besides, I don’t have enough film (胶卷). I can’t take two photos of everyone!” He drew close to me. “We
won’t tell others,” he whispered. He winked (眨眼示意). I shook myhead. “Bye,” he said.
The next day, he came and tilted (倾斜) his head, “I want to help you,” he said, “I can write names.” He took his place next to me. Maiga
had beautiful hand-writing, square and even (方正匀称). He spoke to each
child with authority as he wrote down their information. As each child
left, Maiga said, “Bye.”
One day, hundreds of people came to our camp. They held photos in their hands with hope in their wide dark eyes. They strained their necks to see
through the crowds. They called out names.
All the aid workers gathered to watch as adults and children ran to each other, crying and embracing. I saw family after family brought
together, and I felt delighted and moved as well.

Hello, everyone! I feel honored to be here to talk to you on exercise. As we all know, doing exercise has a lot of benefits. It can not only give us a strong body, but also can make us energetic so that we can better concentrate on studies. So I suggest that we should do some exercise at school.
For example, we should put down our books to stretch our arms from time to time. Besides, we can do some jogging and rope jumping every day.
That’s all. Thank you!

Then I noticed Maiga standing at the edge of the group, watching. Tears poured from his eyes and his mouth was parted in a silent cry. I rushed to him and he sobbed into my chest. “They’ll come. It’s just the first day!” I hugged him and he melted against me. It must have been months since someone had held him this tight. I let him hold on until he was ready to let go. In the following days, Maiga was usually quiet and withdrawn. Sometimes, though, he was animated, almost happy, and he talked about his family, his village and his school.
Paragraph 2:wo weeks later, an aid worker came with a man who looked just like Maiga. “Maiga!” I could barely whisper the name. Maiga was busy writing names. “Maiga!” The familiar sound made him look up. His mouth dropped open and his pen slipped out. He squeaked as he stood up and threw himself into his father’s open arms. I watched with tears all over my cheeks. Maiga then smiled at me and said eagerly, “You will miss me!” I nodded, trying to stop my sobs. “I’ll definitely miss you!” he shouted. I wanted to take a photo of his smile, but no film could have captured the happiness I saw on his face.
