John von Neumann was the oldest of three children of a banker, and his speed of learning new ideas and handling problems stood out early. At 17, his father tried to persuade him not to become a mathematician because he might lead a poor life, so Von Neumann agreed to study chemistry as well. In 1926, at 23, he received a degree in chemical engineering and a PhD in mathematics. From then on, mathematics provided well enough for him, and he never had to turn to chemistry.
In 1930, Von Neumann visited Princeton University for a year and then became a professor there. His first book was published in 1932. In 1933, the Institute for Advanced Study was formed, and he became one of the six full-time people (Einstein was one of the others).
World War Ⅱ hugely changed Von Neumann’s areas of interest. Until 1940 he had been a great pure mathematician. During and after the war, he became one of the best mathematicians who put mathematics theories into practice. During the last part of the war he became interested in computing machines. After the war, Von Neumann continued his work with computers, and was generally very active in government service. He received many awards, was the president of the American Mathematical Society and was a member of the Atomic Energy Commission. He died in 1957 of cancer.

About 20 months ago I started college and just struggled with everything, such as classes and friends. I quickly became depressed and angry at myself for not being able to do better in school, in addition to lack of friends due to poor social and communication skills.
This went on for months until my 19th birthday. My parents sent me a cake, which was a great cake. But I remember having this large cake with absolutely no one to share it with. I ended up throwing the cake after having one piece, with about 90% of it leftover. That night I was so depressed that I decided to go outside to the freezing temperature of the winter and run. I put my earphones in, went outside and ran about 2 miles at 11 p.m. on my birthday.
When I got back inside I was content. I was proud of what I was able to do. The next night I did the same. I wasn’t quick or fit but I went outside and did something. This continued for about 2 months until I finally worked up the courage to go to the gym, where I started swimming again as I used to in high school. A month went by and I started lifting weights and kept running.
Looking back I can see that exercise helped cure my depression but it didn’t only do that. At the gym I met new friends and back at my dorm I grew confidence to go to the end of the hall seeing people playing video games and ask if I could join in.
Now I exercise every day and look forward to that hour and a half I get daily to do what I love with people who love it as well. I hope this helps someone who may be or have been in a similar situation.

Young people in the United States do not have a strong understanding of the world and their place in it.
Two US-based groups, the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Geographic Society, conducted an online survey. They wanted to know what young people in American colleges knew about geography, US foreign policy, recent international events, and economics.
The survey was given to over 1,200 Americans between the ages of 18 and 26. All of them currently attend, or formerly attended, 2- or 4-year college or university.
The average test score, out of 75 total possible answers, was 55 percent. The study identifies a few important problems. For example, only 30 percent knew that the only part of the US government that can declare war is Congress. Only 60 percent of those taking the survey could identify Brazil on a world map.
Part of the problem, argue the organizers of the survey, is the Internet. They say it is becoming harder to find high-quality information about world events amongst all the fake news and trivia(琐事) which swamp the web. Forty-three percent of those questioned said they read about the news on the Internet.
Another problem is that most college courses do not require students to learn about international issues. If such information is not required, Richard Haass from the Council on Foreign Relations said, then the United States could have leaders like Gary Johnson. He was a presidential candidate who did not know about the Syrian city of Aleppo when a reporter asked him about it.
The survey results were not all bad. The young people also demonstrated a good understanding of climate change and renewable energy. And the majority of them said that international issues were becoming more important to them.
Haass says these findings suggest the need to find ways to get good information to students, both in school and online. To help, the Council on Foreign Relations is creating a new program called CFR Campus, designed to help build knowledge about global issues.
28.What can we learn about the survey?
A.All the participants were recent university graduates.
B.It was an online survey conducted by two US universities.
C.Its aim was to figure out what the young people knew about America.
D.It was given to over 1,200 American people aged from 18 to 26.
29.What’s one reason the survey organizers give for young people’s lack of knowledge?
A.Young people are unwilling to travel abroad.
B.Young people find it harder to get high-quality information on the Internet.
C.The US university system is of poor quality.
D.Young people lack interest in knowing more about the world.
30.According to the survey, what topic did the young Americans understand best?
A.Environmental matters.
B.Geographic information.
C.Foreign relations.
D.Government organizations.
31.In which column of a newspaper could we find this article?
A.Economics.
B.Entertainment.
C.Politics.
D.Education.

In today’s households where both parents go to work and kids have busy schedules with homework and many afternoon activities, finding time for a gathering at the table seems all but impossible. Yet, studies have shown time and again that eating together has multiple benefits for family members, especially for children.
According to reports issued by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University(CASA), children who eat more with their family are at lower risk of developing poor eating habits, weight problems or alcohol dependency. They tend to perform better academically than those who frequently eat alone. Family meals came into American life in the mid-20th century. In the 1960s and 1970s, social, economic and technological changes quickly dissolved the short-lived way of family meals. Restaurant visits, takeout and TV dinners have since become the norm(常态).
There are indications, however, that the old customs are coming back. According to the latest CASA reports, 59% of surveyed families said they ate dinner together at least five times a week, a significant increase from 47% in 1998. Whatever drives this trend, it is a development that should be welcomed.
Eating together as a family is not just about food and nutrition. It is about teaching children how to become members of their society and culture. Food has become so easily and cheaply available that we no longer appreciate its significance. We have to rediscover its importance and its value. Sharing a meal with loved ones should be considered a special event, which can almost take on the form of a ceremony, as it was practiced by our ancestors for whom finding food was a constant struggle.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the simple act of eating at home surrounded by family may make children more virtuous or socially more responsible. But it can lay the groundwork for a lot of things that point them in the right direction.
32.What does the underlined sentence suggest?
A.This practice of family meals started to change.
B.Dining at home would enjoy great popularity.
C.The society was to develop at a rapid speed.
D.Americans would attach importance to takeout.
33.What is the writer’s attitude toward eating together as a family?
A.Favorable. B.Disapproving.
C.Reserved. D.Objective.
34.From the passage we learn the ancestors possibly .
A.valued the education of children
B.liked struggling with each other
C.cared much about food nutrition
D.appreciated the importance of food
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Good Eating Habits Matter
B.Family Dinners Benefit Kids
C.Meals Take on New Meanings
D.Old Customs Are Coming Back

Research clearly shows that leaders who are positive, inspiring, and who can develop followers are better leaders. 36 As a result, it would make sense that some people try hard to improve leadership skills. Consider these four tips on how to improve your leadership skills.
Keep a positive attitude. No one respects a negative person. With a positive attitude you are looking at the bright side of life. People naturally come close to you when you have a positive attitude. By being positive, you will lead a happier life, as well as be surrounded by other positive people. 37
Improve communication skills. Having great leadership skills means you are able to clearly communicate your ideas, skills and goals to others. 38 To become a great communicator, you should continually try hard to improve your verbal(口语的), non-verbal, and listening skills.
39 No one is perfect, and everyone will make mistakes in their lives! The most successful leaders know that the key to success is not to avoid falling or failing, but to benefit from their mistakes. As a strong leader, you will also be able to communicate your faults to your team.
Continue to educate and improve yourself. Great leaders show effective leadership skills, but most importantly, they continue to improve themselves in every possible way. The person who thinks he or she is an expert has a lot more to improve. 40 Always try to grow.
A.Serve as a role model.
B.So never stop learning.
C.They are more valued by other people or teams.
D.This also includes your ability to listen to others.
E.Be willing to admit and learn from your weaknesses.
F.You will also attract exciting offers and possibilities.

John Carpenter did not like to buy toys that somebody else had made. He liked the fun of making them himself. The thought that they were his own work delighted him. Tom Austin, one of his playmates, thought a toy was worth nothing unless it cost a great deal of money. He never tried to make anything, but bought all his toys.
“Come and look at my horse,” said Tom one day.“It cost a dollar, and it is such a beauty! Come and see it.”
John was soon admiring his friend’s horse, and he was examining it carefully to see how it was made. The same evening he began to make one on his own. He went into the woodshed, and picked out two pieces of wood—one for the head of his horse, the other for the body. It took him two or three days to shape them to his satisfaction.
His father gave him a bit of red leather for a bridle, and a few brass nails, and his mother found a bit of old fur with which he made the mane and tail for his horse. But what about the wheels? This puzzled him. At last he thought he would go to a turner’s shop, and see if he could get some round pieces of wood which might suit his purpose.
He found a large number of such pieces among the shavings on the floor, and asked permission to take a few of them. The turner asked him what he wanted them for, and he told him about his horse. “Oh,” said the man, laughing,“I will make some wheels for your horse, if you wish. But remember, when it is finished, you must let me see it.”
John promised to do so, and he soon ran home with the wheels in his pocket.
The next morning, he went to the turner’s shop with his horse all completed.
He studied hard in school.

W: Yes, please.

W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to our programme. I’m Jenny Jackson. The weather here in Ju?rez has become unbearable. With no rains for over a year, the city is suffering from unusually hot weather. Some light showers have been forecast since last month, but all of them have been effective in surrounding areas. Summer has not even started yet, but temperatures have reached 40 degrees centigrade in the past three days. And people have been warned not to go out of their homes—not if you walk on foot, at least—between 11 in the morning and 7 in the evening. Little kids and the elderly are the ones who have suffered the most from this extreme heat wave. They must drink water all the time. To help our audience have a better understanding of this extreme weather, we have invited Professor Torres from the University of Mexico to our studio this evening.

写作
第一节
Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to hear that you are bothered by your family rules. However, I can’t be on your side this time. Family rules which let us know how to behave properly are essential for us. For example, “Come home before ten at night” is for your safety and “Never talk back to your parents” is teaching you good manners. In fact, I benefit a lot from my family rules, such as “Be gentle with everyone” and “Apologise if you hurt others’ feelings”. Sometimes family rules make us uncomfortable, but that’s the price we have to pay for a successful life. Am I right?
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
The next morning, he went to the turner’s shop with his horse all completed. Proud of the turner’s praise, John ran to his friend Tom, crying,“Now then, Tom, here is my horse—look!” “Well, that is a funny horse,” said Tom with interest.“Where did you buy it?” “I didn’t buy it,” replied John,“I made it.” “You made it yourself! Oh, well, it’s a good horse for you to make. But it is not so good as mine. Mine cost a dollar while yours cost nothing.” “It was real fun to make it, though.” said John, and away he ran with his horse rolling after him.
He studied hard in school. He was the top student in his class and was still crazy about making things on his own. When he graduated, he went to work in a machine shop. Definitely, it delighted him to make amazing things by machine. To his satisfaction, he is now a master workman, and will soon have a shop of his own.
