Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough travelled 37,500 kilometres around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support the grass-roots education project in Africa, Asia and South America.
The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometres away from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days. On arrival in Chepen, Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialised in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.
The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain-ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.
Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa, Asia and South America. They witnessed first-hand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They joined street children in the slums of Cairo, Khartoum, Kampala, Mumbai and Phnom Penh. They visited Congolese refugees(难民) in camps in Eastern Burundi.
The pair established The Tuk Tuk Educational Trust, a UK registered charity.
Talking about their motivation, Richard said:“The world’s leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but, in spite of this pledge(誓言,承诺), over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school; many more are in school, though still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”
24.Why did the two teachers travel the world?
    A.To support an education project.
B.To create a new world record.
    C.To entertain themselves.
    D.To challenge themselves.

A.A little more than 30 kilometres.
    B.About 14 miles.

    D.70 kilometres.
26.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.How they realised their next goal.
B.Their exciting experience on the road.
C.The beautiful scenery of famous mountains.
D.The difficulties and dangers they faced in the journey.
27.Which of the following best describes the two teachers?

    B.Humorous and generous.
    C.Courageous and responsible.

While you are studying or working abroad, sharing an apartment with people from other cultures is a great way of getting the most out of a period of the beginning. This is a situation to which it will take some time to adapt. Here are some tips to make the process go smoother.
Start by being aware of your own culture, values and attitudes. Understand that people who have not grown up in the same country or context as you can sometimes translate some of your behaviour in the wrong way. To avoid this, seek advice from your friends and family to find out more about what type of person you are and what you might come across when it comes to people who don’t know you. You might also consider conducting a little research about what type of stereotypes(成见) other cultures might hold about the people of your own country.
Be understanding and patient. Now that you know that people are all different, be understanding when you get to know them. Try to be open-minded so that you can start off on the right foot. This will promote communication with them. To get to know each other better, plan to spend some time doing what each of you likes to do in your spare time. You can cook meals together, go out to town, listen to music, take a weekend trip and play some board games. Moreover, the other person might be from a place where people do not usually do these activities.
People are more similar than you think most of the time. We grow up in such a large world with so much information everywhere and sometimes we can be misled into thinking something that we should not believe, but we have the opportunity to make up our own minds. So be kind. You don’t know where people come from and what their story is.
28.Why does the author suggest being aware of your own culture?
    A.To learn to behave well.
B.To build the sense of independence.
    C.To prevent yourself being misunderstood.
D.To gain an insight into other cultures.
29.What can you do for a better understanding of each other?
A.Mind your own business in spare time.
B.Suggest some activities to do together.
C.Involve your roommate in what you like.
D.Team up with your roommate in video games.
30.What does the author intend to express in the last paragraph?
A.The world is so large and people are different.
B.Being friendly is good for cross-cultural communication.
C.People from different cultures should learn from each other.
D.Get more information about different cultures from the Internet.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Study or Work Abroad
B.How to Learn Cultures of Your Roommates
C.How to Have a Good Time with Foreigners
D.How to Live with People from Different Cultures

When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place. Until I made a discovery.
Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing. I loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it. Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam(横杆), I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:“Safe! Safe! Safe!” And that’s what mattered — landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I’d given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I’ve traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear; tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters. Weaving(穿梭) among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way to the beam. Then a rail-thin teenager, in a baggy white T-shirt, skidded(滑) up to the beam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon I caught a few of his glances.“I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head.“Safe, man. Safe.”
    “Yeah,” I said.“Safe.”
32.What can we learn about the author soon after he moved to London?
    A.He felt disappointed.
    B.He gave up his hobby.
    C.He liked the weather there.
D.He had disagreements with his family.
33.What do the underlined words “Safe! Safe! Safe!” probably mean?
    A.Be careful! B.Well done!
    C.No way! D.Don’t worry!
34.Why did the author like to spend time in Southbank when he returned to London?
    A.To join the skateboarding.
    B.To make new friends.
    C.To learn more tricks.
    D.To relive his childhood days.
35.What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.Children should learn a second language.
B.Sport is necessary for children’s health.
C.Children need a sense of belonging.
D.Seeing the world is a must for children.
On 10 April 1912, an amazing, imposing new ocean liner steamed out of Southampton Harbour. 36 She was the largest ship in the world at that time, and the most luxurious. Her passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world. Everyone agreed this beautiful new ship was the best liner in existence—in fact, she was said to be unsinkable.
The ship’s crew had absolute confidence in her. When, four days later, Captain Edward Smith gave his radio-men the order to transmit the international distress signal, SOS, they thought he was joking. He wasn’t. At 2:20 a.m.on 15 April 1912, the Titanic sank beneath the freezing waters of the Atlantic. 37 It is still one of the biggest peacetime maritime tragedies in history.
On 14 April 2012, a passenger ship stopped in the North Atlantic. 38 It was cold and dark. 1,300 passengers stood on deck as a memorial service was held for the people who died there. Two wreaths of flowers were thrown into the freezing water.
The story of the Titanic has touched and fascinated people for over a century. Mistakes that were made added up to disaster. 39 There are records of generosity and courage that saved lives when so many others were lost. Millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim was offered one of the few places in a lifeboat, but said it should be given to a woman or a child, and chose instead to dress for dinner. Someone overheard him say “We’ve dressed up in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen!” 40 The pure drama of the scene means that the legend of the Titanic will never be forgotten.
A.For example, the Titanic’s radio room received no fewer than seven ice warnings on the night of the tragedy.
B.It was twenty to midnight, the exact time when the Titanic hit the iceberg 100 years ago.
C.Survivors recalled that the lights stayed on and the orchestra was playing until the moment the huge ship sank into the black water.
D.They arrived two hours later, but only 53 people were rescued from the water.
E.It was her first voyage and her destination was New York City—across the Atlantic Ocean.
F.On that night, over 1,500 people lost their lives.
G.The order to abandon the ship was given and hundreds of people plunged into the icy water.

We moved on into the jungle—a forest where large numbers of tall trees and plants grow very close together. Old Mali went in front and I followed close behind him. We stopped for the night about an hour before it began to get dark.
Old Mali lit a fire. Then he showed me how to make a bed with moss(青苔, 苔藓).
    It was soft and comfortable.
“Mali, how did you learn to make such a bed?” I asked.
“I learned to make beds like that,” Mali replied,“by watching and listening to others. That is the real way to learn anything.”
“Will you let me watch you always?” I asked Old Mali.“I want to learn all the things you know about the jungle.”
When we had finished our supper, Old Mali got onto his bed and lay down.It was completely dark. In the fire light, Old Mali seemed to be fast asleep on his bed. I suddenly felt alone and afraid.
All day in the jungle, while we had been walking, I had heard noises of animals. The jungle was a wall of blackness in the light of the fire.
I felt frightened and suddenly my mouth went dry. I wanted to scream. I felt my mouth opening wide, ready to scream as loud as possible.
But I did not scream. I saw Old Mali’s face in the firelight. This made me feel ashamed. I held my teeth tightly together to stop myself from screaming. I lay down and closed my eyes.
As soon as I closed my eyes, I heard a thousand noises. The whole jungle became alive with animals moving quietly and carefully all around me. Suddenly Old Mali took a deep breath and made a noise. I was hearing so many imaginary noises and the real noise made by Old Mali gave me a terrible fright.
I opened my eyes and jumped out of bed. I pulled my knife out and held it above my head.
I was going to see if there were wild animals beside the fire.

Old Mali’s quiet calm voice made me feel better.

W: Really? I need to call my friend now. He went there last week.
    (Text 2)
M: Look! The printer is broken. I told you it wasn’t working.

M: Yes, and I have learnt a lot.
    (Text 4)

W: Jasper, it’s Mum. Do you have any date?

M: I’m from Italy. You speak English really well. Do you study English at school?
W: Yes, we have English on Tuesdays and Thursdays. What subjects do you study?
M: Oh, the usual subjects like maths, English, science... we also study French. What subject do you like best?
W: I love art. That’s why I’m here at this summer school. What about you?
M: I love maths and science so I’m going to do the science course.
W: Really? I don’t like science very much and I’m terrible at maths.
    (Text 9)
M: I’m sure you’ve noticed a lot of things that are different about our school.
W: Oh, yes. In the United States, we don’t have to carry a big schoolbag with us like you do.
    M: Why is that?
W: We have a locker of our own which is a small box with a lock. We keep textbooks and our personal things in it. I just bring a daypack to school.
    M: A daypack?
W: Yes. It’s a small bag that you carry on your back.
M: What do you carry in it?
W: My notebooks or a few books for homework.
M: That’s convenient. Is there anything else you’ve noticed about our school?
W: Yes. I am surprised that everyone is so silent in class.
    M: What do you mean?
W: Well, we usually ask questions about exams, homework or textbooks on the first day of the school year. The teacher likes such questions.
M: So you felt it different?
W: Yes. I expected to see a lot of discussions in class because we learn that way in the United States.
M: I see. That will be a good topic for our school newspaper for the first month of the term. Nice talking with you. See you around. Bye!
    W: Bye!
    (Text 10)
W:Thanks for tuning in to today’s weather forecast on WBEZ Tulsa. We have a boiling hot day expected here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Temperatures have been in the high nineties all week and will break one hundred degrees this afternoon. Fortunately, it’s pretty dry out there. This will at least make the high temperatures not seem any hotter. We are seeing a storm in the forecast for later in the week which will hopefully cool things down. Please be sure to drink a lot of water and use a lot of suncream if you will be outside for long periods of time. Try to stay indoors and wear a hat if you go outside or to the pool. Don’t leave your pets or young children in the cars with the windows up. The Big Splash water park here in town is offering a “hot days” discount for kids this week. That should help us cool off a little bit! Be careful out there, folks. Tune in tomorrow for another Tulsa weather update here on WBEZ!

根据 “3.Lightly cover the burn with a bandage.”
故选A项。
根据第一段中的 “They did this to support the grass-roots education project in Africa, Asia and South America.” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的 “...they were only 70 kilometres away from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days.”
根据第二段第二句 “Understand that people who have not grown up in the same country or context as you can sometimes translate some of your behaviour in the wrong way.” 第三句中的 “To avoid this” 和 “find out more about what type of person you are” 可知,为了避免这种情况的发生, 作者建议要了解你是什么样的人, 即从了解自己的文化开始, 所以C项正确。
由第三段中的 “To get to know each other better, plan to spend some time doing what each of you likes to do in your spare time.”
根据最后一段中的 “So be kind.”
第一段中的 “...sharing an apartment with people from other cultures is a great way of getting the most out of a period of the beginning.”
根据第一段中的 “...I felt at a loss and out of place.” 故选A项。
根据下文的 “And that’s what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.”

I had a lot of help from the neighbours可知, 当初奶奶处境困难时, 是邻居们给她提供了很多帮助。

I was going to see if there were wild animals beside the fire. Through the burning fire, I believed I saw their sharp teeth and cruel red eyes. Their claws would insert into my flesh without mercy as soon as I came into their sight. I couldn’t help trembling and screaming loudly at the thought of them. Then a soft voice came from the dark,“Are you OK?” It was Old Mali who was lying on his side with his eyes wide open.
Old Mali’s quiet calm voice made me feel better. Adjusting breath quickly and observing carefully, I found the animals were just the shadows of trees. I laughed in relief and told Old Mali what had happened. Having known the whole story, Mali gave me an understanding smile and told me his former experiences in the jungle. With these stories, I got back to my bed and lay down. Exhausted, I closed my eyes, and knowing Old Mali was watching, I soon fell fast asleep. That night was so unforgettable that it would stay in my memory forever.
