Low-cost Gifts for Mother’s Day
Gift No. 1
Offer to be your mother’s health friend. Promise to be there for all doctor’s visits whether she has a disease or needs a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say there is no need, but another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor’s visit. The best part? This one is free.
Gift No. 2
Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what time she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother’s life,” Dr. Marie Savard said.
Gift No. 3
Enough sleep is connected with general health conditions. “Buy your mother cotton sheets and comfortable pillows to encourage better sleep,” Savard said. “We know that good sleep is very important to our health.”
Gift No. 4
Some gift companies such as Presents for Purpose allow you to pay it forward this Mother’s Day by picking gifts, 10 percent of whose price you pay goes to a charity Gift givers can choose from a wide variety of useful but inexpensive things — many of which are “green” — and then choose a meaningful charity from a list. When your mother gets the gift she will be told that she has helped the chosen charity.
1. What are you advised to do for your mother at doctor’s visits?
A. To take notes. B. To be with her.
C. To buy medicines. D. To give her gifts.
2. Where can you find an idea for gifts to improve your mother’s sleep?

Levi Strauss did not invent jeans, but he is considered the first person to make and sell great numbers of them. He was born in Bavaria, an area that is part of Germany. In 1847 he and his family moved to the United States.
Levi Strauss opened a small dry goods store, first in New York, then in San Francisco, California. Among the products he sold were jeans. These pants were especially useful for miners in California. They needed clothing made from a strong material. Jeans are usually made from a heavy cotton cloth called denim.
Levi Strauss partnered with a clothing maker named Jacob Davis. Davis had invented a process for making rivets (铆钉) for jeans. These little metal connectors helped hold the pieces of cloth together to make the jeans stronger.
In 1875, the government gave Strauss and Davis a patent (专利) for their invention. That meant no one else could legally copy it without their permission. In 1928 the Levi Strauss company registered (注册) the word “Levi’s” as a trademark for their product.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington has one of the oldest known pairs of Levi’s. Writer James Sullivan published a book called “Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon.” In the book, he says jeans show two American values, creativity and rebellion.
Cowboys wore jeans in the old Wild West. In the 1950s, people saw famous Hollywood actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing jeans in movies.
Today jeans come in blue but also lots of other colors and in many styles and at all prices.

Everybody knows that Coca Cola is red and Starbucks is green. Most of us can name companies and their own brand colors. What we may not know about is the science behind these companies' choices of these colors. Color psychology is the study of how colors affect people's feelings, actions, and decision-making. Companies use color psychology when they develop their brands and advertisements in order to encourage us to buy. In fact studies have shown that around 90 percent of people spend money depending on color and appearance. Because of this, companies use colors to influence how we feel about their products. For example, it’s no accident that many tech products use white; it's simple and clean. At the same time, cosmetics companies prefer colors like purple, black, or pink that mean love, comfort, and romance.
Companies often choose active colors that make you buy right now. Red, for example, is a high-energy, exciting color that moves people to take action. Yellow is the color of summer, and it’s bright and remarkable. In fact, most big companies have something to do with certain specific colors. Studies show that customers prefer brands that they know. Then those with a proper color plan, such as LEGO or Facebook are likely to perform more strongly on the market. Research has also shown that men and women like different colors. Men prefer blue, green, and black while women prefer like purple and pink.
8. What products are usually made white?
A. Food and drinks. B. Clothes for women.
C. Computer and earphones. D. Starbucks
9. What is TRUE about LEGO and Facebook?
A. They pay attention to the color plan. B. They may be popular on the market.
C. They may be bright and remarkable. D. They decide to choose red and yellow for the plan.
10. What products may make Mary buy it\ them now?
A. A coat in pink. B. A pair of shoes in green.
C. A handbag in black. D. A T-shirt in yellow
11. The purpose of this passage is to tell us______.
A. Few companies use color psychology.
B. Colors influence our shopping habits.
C. We should buy something according to it's color.
D. colors don’t affect people's feelings, actions, and decision-making.
C 9. B 10. A 11. B

根据第二段中“Then those with a proper color plan, such as LEGO or Facebook are likely to perform more strongly on the market.(然后那些有适当色彩计划的公司,如乐高或Facebook,可能会在市场上表现得更强劲)”可知,关于LEGO 和Facebook的陈述中,B选项“他们可能在市场上很受欢迎”正确。故选B。

In the near future, daily newspapers and monthly magazines will probably disappear. Electronic media(媒体) can provide the same information faster and cheaper. The Internet, together with laptops and mobile phones, makes it possible that almost everyone can at any time and in almost any place get some news for free or for few fees.
You'll browse the computer newspapers or magazines just like turning on TV. An electronic voice will tell you stories about the latest events. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the whole text appear.
There are the predictions from the experts working on the newspapers of the future. Imagined as part of home media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers and magazines would unite printed and broadcast news, offering information and analyzing video images of news events.
The continuing loss of readers will lead to a small number of advertisements in newspapers. It makes no sense to spend millions of dollars to print ads.
With the development of technology, more and more electronic media have been created until now, but replacing the traditional newspapers and magazines has a long way to go, because the resistance to computer newspapers and magazines from journalism(新闻业) may be much stronger. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be not until the present journalists(新闻工作者), who aren't used to it, die off that the newspaper industry is not considered as an industry any longer. Anyway, technology is making the traditional newspapers and magazines disappear gradually.
12. Computer newspapers and magazines have all the advantages EXCEPT that ______ .
A. you can choose the kind of voice you like to hear.
B. they are more expensive than traditional newspapers.
C. you can get more information from them easily.
D. you can easily store information for the future use.

A. new things will replace the old ones in the future.
B. traditional newspapers and magazines will disappear soon.
C. all technological developments are very important.
D. traditional newspapers and magazines will be more popular.
15. The author writes the article to ______ .
A. tell readers what newspapers and magazines are like in the future
B. let people know the great development of the journalism
C. prove newspapers and magazines are not welcomed any more
D. say traditional newspapers and magazines are better than before
B 13. D 14. A 15. B

With the development of technology, more and more electronic media have been created until now, but replacing the traditional newspapers and magazines has a long way to go, because the resistance to computer newspapers and magazines from journalism(新闻业) may be much stronger. 由此可见, a force that acts to stop something happening意义为:抵制,故选D。
Anyway, technology is making the traditional newspapers and magazines disappear gradually.

B 17. F 18. E 19. A 20. G
上文“As we all know, books are very important to us. They can provide us with many useful things.(我们都知道,书对我们是非常重要的。他们可以为我们提供很多有用的东西)”告诉我们书的重要性,B项“So reading books is necessary for us.(所以读书对我们来说是必要的)”承接上文,引出读书的必要性,上下文因果关系明确,因为书重要,所以读书必要。故选B项。
【17题详解】
根据下文“Libraries are wonderful places to find a variety of books. What’s more, you can fix your attention on the book in this quiet, comfortable place because you won’t be disturbed. You can also relax yourself in this comfortable place.(图书馆是找到各种书籍的好地方。更重要的是,你可以在这个安静,舒适的地方把你的注意力集中在书上,因为你不会被打扰。你也可以在这个舒适的地方放松自己)”可知,本段主要讲了图书馆读书的好处,所以设空处作为段首中心句,讲的也应是library 。故选F项。
【18题详解】
根据下文“If you have trouble understanding what the author’s trying to say, you may not enjoy reading it again and again.(如果你在理解作者想表达的意思上有困难,你可能就不会喜欢一遍又一遍地读它)”可知,我们应该选择难度适合自己的书,E项“You should find a book that’s proper for you to read.(你应该找一本适合你读的书)”表达了同样的意思,两句从正反两方面表达了“适合”的重要性,。故选E项。
分析上文内容可知,第二、三和四自然段都是作者提出的建议,段首句皆为各段中心句,是祈使句式,所以本题设空处也应使用祈使句,故只剩下的A、C两项可选,下文“If you want to learn the language, you should learn the sentence structures, the useful words and expressions that you may need to use later.(如果你想要学习这门语言,你应该学习句子结构,有用的单词和表达,你可能以后会用到 )”中“you want to learn the language, you should...”是学习目的表达,与A项“Know what your purpose is.(知道你的目的是什么)”相关。故选A项。
G项“If you are reading for fun, or just for killing time, then you needn’t be too serious.(如果你读书是为了好玩,或者只是为了消磨时间,那么你不必太严肃)”与上文“If you want to learn the language, you should learn the sentence structures, the useful words and expressions that you may need to use later.(如果你想要学习这门语言,你应该学习句子结构,有用的单词和表达,你可能以后会用到 )”提到了出于两种不同目的阅读,有不同的阅读方式,形成对比,同时也是对第4题所选段首中心句“Know what your purpose is.(知道你的目的是什么)”的再次印证。

Recently, a heated debate has been held in our class about whether it is good to study at home. Opinions vary from person to person.
58% of the students are in favor of the idea. First of all, they can save a lot of time and costs by studying at home. They don’t need to worry about traffic jam or transportation fares. Second, they can decorate their studying environment as they like. What’s more, they can balance their study and family better. It is easier for them to care for their parents and themselves.
However, 42% of them are against it. For one thing, they may feel lonely / suffer from loneliness because they are away from their classmates. And they will have fewer opportunities to make friends with their classmates. For another, while studying at home, they may be interrupted from time to time by their family members.
