The students can not get the phones until the final bell rings. The thing will repeat every day for the rest of the school year. Adam Gelb, the headmaster, tried a test last year with 12 boy students and 18 girl students and it worked well. So he decided to do a school-wide program for this school year. Brad Friedman, a teacher at the school, said he often saw students completely lost on their phones, some not talking at all with other students. “Everyone else was talking with friends and eating lunch together; that’s what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage is at its worst,” he added. Ben, a student at the school said he definitely panicked at first when he heard he had to lock his phone. “I was using it every day,” he said. But now he thinks it is a good way to make good use of the school time to study and make friends.
A
Situated along the Pacific Flyway, a good migratory path that stretches from Alaskn to Patagonia, Santa Cruz plays host to hundreds of bird species. Just head to one of the spots listed below and see for yourself!
UCSC Arboretum
The diverse plants that attract a wide range of birds make these gardens a wonderful place to start. Mark your calendar for the Arboretum's popular Hummingbird Days, a family-friendly festival that celebrates the tiny birds on March 5th and 6th.
Natural Bridges State Beach
This scenic park is excellent for bird watchers due to its wide sampling of local habitats. Over 250 bird species have been recorded in the area.
Neary Lagoon
Birdsong fills the air at this peaceful oasis less than a 10-minute walk from the fun of the Santa Cruz Beach. A walkway allows visitors a front-row view of birds such as American Coots.
Watsonville Wetlands
The wetlands provide a year-round home for local birds and serve as a stop for migratory birds visiting from faraway. Drop by the Nature Centre for exhibits, maps, and suggestions for best spots to visit.
Birding Tips
●The early birder gets the worm. You’re likely to see more birds earlier rather than later in the day.
●No two visits are likely to be the same. Varying times and seasons bring different birds and behaviour.
●No matter how cute those little birds are, you should resist feeding them with your bread. It's unhealthy for the bird and the surrounding ecosystem.
How to Get More Involved
We recommend joining the Santa Cruz Birding Club for public events and abundant online guides. Contact us free at Birding & Wildlife Watch Kit for registration.

I carried the flame in 1984 in the torch relay (火炬传递)as it made its way across the country to the Olympics in Los Angeles. What an honour that was! I wasn’t an Olympic athlete. My dad did some voluntary work for the Olympics, for which I was offered the opportunity.
On one May night, the flame began its route across America, covering 15,000 kilometres. It inched its way up the coast from New York, each runner carrying it for a kilometre. Some of the runners were legendary (享有盛名的), like the granddaughter of gold medaled Jesse Owen. Others were common people like me and supporters of the cause.
I had been sent a uniform and the official torch. I held it as I stood waiting for the flame to arrive. Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that enormous distance? Other people were huddled (挤在一起)in the dark on the sidewalk. What would they see?
All at once it happened. A runner appeared and lit my torch. I was sent on my way, jogging down the highway. There was no question whether I had worried about finding my way in the dark. People lined the road, clapping and shouting as I passed. Actually, it was not for me but for the cause that I represented. Soon, I passed the flame on to the next runner, who would pass it along to the next until it finally reached gold medalist Rafer Johnson who would carry it into the L. A. Coliseum.
How lucky I was to play a part! But I think we all have these opportunities to carry the torch, for we are all the light of the world. Therefore, why not let your light shine?
24. What do the underlined words “the cause” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The Olympics. B. The voluntary work
C. The torch relay. D. The wonderful competition.
25. How did the author feel when waiting for the flame to arrive?
A. Excited. B. Disappointed. C. Worried D. Satisfied.
26. Why did the people on the sidewalk clap?
A. To encourage him to move faster. B. To show their support for him.
C. To praise the career he chose. D. To cheer for the Olympic spirits.
27. What can we infer about the author in the text?
A. He thought little of being a torch carrier
B. He preferred to see others carry the torch.
C. He felt proud of having such an experience
D. He advised us to value every chance we have.
A 25. C 26. D 27. C
词句猜测题,根据第一段第一句“I carried the flame in 1984 in the torch relay (火炬传递) as it made its way across the country to the Olympics in Los Angeles.(1984年,我在火炬传递中传递了圣火,并将其传递到洛杉矶奥运会)”,第二段划线词所在句“Others were common people like me and supporters of the cause.(其他人是像我这样的普通人,是这个事业的支持者。)”中的“supporters”和第四段的第六句“Actually, it was not for me but for the cause that I represented. (事实上,这不是为了我,而是为了我所代表的事业。)”可知,作者支持奥运会,所以参加了奥运火炬传递,该短语指的是“奥运会比赛”。故选A项。
推理判断题,根据第三段的“Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that enormous distance? Other people were huddled (挤在一起) in the dark on the sidewalk. What would they see?(我有点想知道这火炬会不会来。他们能找到足够的跑步者来跑这么远的距离吗?在黑暗中,其他的人在人行道上挤在一起。他们会看到什么?)”可知,等待火炬到来的过程中,作者思绪万千,有各种担心。故选C项。

【27题详解】
推理判断题,根据第一段第二句“What an honour that was!(这是多大的荣幸啊!)”以及最后一段的第一句“How lucky I was to play a part!(我是多么幸运能起一份作用!)”

The Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) is a love story, a sad and beautiful one. If it didn’t exist, we would easily imagine that the story of its construction was simply a fairy tale. Three hundred years ago, there lived an Indian emperor called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman whom he loved greatly. Her title was Mumtazl Mahal: its shortened form Taj Mahal, means “pride of the palace”. In the year 1630 this beloved wife of the emperor died. He was so brokenhearted that he thought of giving up his throne. He decided, out of his love for his wife, to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.
He summoned the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and finally, the design was complete. It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahal, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
The building itself stands on a marble platform 29 metres square and 6-7 metres high. Towers rise from each of the four corners. The Taj itself soars another 61 metres into the air. It is an eight-sided building made of white marble.
The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river connected by a silver bridge. However, his son put him into a prison in the palace before he could finish, and for the rest of his life, he could only gaze across river at the tomb of his beloved wife.
28. What can we know about Mumtazl Mahal?
A. She was once an emperor. B. She’s Shah Jahan’s wife.
C. She was ugly but very bright. D. She was a little proud.
29. Why was the Taj Mahal built?
A. The emperor was very disappointed.
B. The emperor fell ill and died.
C. The emperor wanted to honour his wife.
D. The emperor made his wife beautiful.
30. How’s the work for building the Taj Mahal?
A. It’s a huge project. B. It’s an interesting project.
C. It’s a livelihood project. D. It’s a money saving project.
31. What made the emperor stop building an identical tomb for himself?
A. His sudden illness. B. His lack of money.
C. His people’s idea. D. His son’s fight against him.
B 29. C 30. A 31. D

Her title was Mumtazl Mahal: its shortened form Taj Mahal, means ‘pride of the palace”.’(三百年前,有一位印度皇帝叫沙贾汗。
根据文章第一段“He decided, out of his love for his wife, to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.”(出于对妻子的爱,他决定为她建造一座前所未见的最美丽的坟墓。)
根据文章第二段“It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahal, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.”(泰姬陵是世界上最美丽的建筑之一,2万多人花了18年的时间建造而成。)及第三段“The building itself stands on a marble platform 29 metres square and 6-7 metres high. Towers rise from each of the four corners. The Taj itself soars another 61 metres into the air. It is an eight-sided building made of white marble.”(建筑本身矗立在一个29平方米、6-7米高的大理石平台上。 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“However, his son put him into a prison in the palace before he could finish, and for the rest of his life, he could only gaze across river at the tomb of his beloved wife.”(然而,还没等他完成建设,他的儿子就把他关进了宫殿的监狱,从此以后,他只能隔着河望着他心爱的妻子的坟墓。)

Extreme athletes have been using wingsuits to fly freely for many years. While the “birdman” allows these brave people to fly in the sky, the pull of gravity makes it impossible to speed up or fly higher. To push past the limitations, Austrian stuntman(特技演员)Peter Salzmann teamed up with German car manufacturer BMW. The result is an electrified wingsuit, which allows flyers to fly to higher altitudes at a speed of up to 186 miles per hour.
The 33-year-old professional wingsuit pilot first thought of creating the revolutionary design in 2017. “At the time, I was developing suits for skydiving with a friend,” he explains. “One evening after a day of testing, we threw out lots of ideas about how we could improve performance. One of them was a supporting motor, and it’s an idea I just couldn't shake. I found the idea of being able to jump from my local mountain wearing the wingsuits.”
Salzmann reached out to the experts. It took the team three years and a large number of tests to perfect the design. The result was that a more advanced wingsuit was created. The wingsuit is powered by the battery and is controlled by using a switch. It can even be stopped mid-flight using the emergency button, if the flyer comes across an airplane or a flock of birds.
On November 6, 2020, Salzmann, wearing his hi-tech suit, jumped from a helicopter from an altitude of 10,000 feet to fly around the mountain peaks. After flying with two experienced flyers in conventional wingsuits for a few seconds, the expert pilot turned on the electric motors and flew forward the highest peaks. Without the extra power to propel(推动)them, his teammates were forced to fly around the mountain top.
It is unclear if Salzmann and BMW plan to make the electrified wingsuits available to the general public. For now, however, the flight video appears to intend to show the technology in BMW’s latest electric car offering.
32. How did Peter Salzmann fly higher?
A. By wearing wingsuits. B. By pushing gravity.
C. By using electrified wingsuits. D. By increasing his speed.
33. What should be done to avoid the barriers?
A. To turn off the switch.
B. To press the emergency button.
C. To control the direction.
D. To provide power for the battery.
34. What is the flight video intended to do?
A. Show the technology in BMW’s electric cars.
B. Encourage people to fall in love with flying.
C. Introduce the necessity to produce wingsuits.
D. Let the general public learn about the technology.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Stuntman Realized His Great Dream at Last
B. Stuntman Puts World’s First Electric Wingsuit to Test
C. BMW Will Show Its Latest Electric Car in the Near Future
D. Wingsuits Can Make People Fly Higher and Faster
C 33. B 34. A 35. B

There are many people out there who want to be “part of the crowd”. If you want to be the leader and stand out from the crowd instead, then this article is for you. ____36____
Know you’re unique.
For starters, know that you’re already different from everyone on the planet. ____37____ But all of us have a unique set of experiences and characteristics that spell out a different reality from everyone else on Earth. No one else has the same brain you do, the same thoughts you do, and the same reactions as you do. You’re different by just being human.
Try new things.
We are naturally raised as part of a group. ____38____ These things are good-they can open us up to things we’re not even aware of, but it’s also important to try things that are brand new to you that other people haven’t already accepted. How else will you find out what you like and do not like?
____39____
This is a way to act differently toward people than they expect. One way to be certainly be different is to be friendly to everyone. How many people do you know that are friendly to literally “everyone”? Probably not many. It’s hard work! We all end up judging those around us and drawing certain types of people. Instead, be friendly toward those you may not feel friendly toward.
Know the world works in opposites.
So many people are trying to be different. It results in them all being the same! Being quiet may mean that when you talk, people hear you louder. When you’re not trying to attract that boy or girl, they become attracted to you. ____40____
A. Shake hands with your enemies.
B. Sure, some people are more different than others.
C. So trying to be different may not get you anywhere.
D. It’s a wonderful feeling when you know that you are unique.
E. If you don’t know who you are, that process can seem a bit scary.
F. There will be times when an entire room is thinking something, but no one says it.

空格前说“We are naturally raised as part of a group.(我们自然是作为群体的一部分被抚养长大的)”,空格后说“These things are good-they can open us up to things we’re not even aware of, but it’s also important to try things that are brand new to you that other people haven’t already accepted.(这些东西都是好的——它们可以让我们接触到我们甚至没有意识到的东西,但尝试那些对你来说是全新的、其他人还没有接受的东西也是很重要的)”,因此空格处说明我们会从群体中接触到一些东西。G选项“Therefore, we’re constantly being got to things that others have already recognized.(因此,我们不断接触到别人已经认识到的东西)”中的“things that others have already recognized”和空后的“things we’re not even aware of”相呼应,说明了我们会在群体中接触到别人已经认识到的东西,故选G。
空格处是本段的小标题,由空格下方的“One way to be certainly be different is to be friendly to everyone.(与众不同的一种方式就是对每个人都友好)”可知,本段主要讲的是要对人友好。A选项“Shake hands with your enemies.(和你的敌人握手)”说明了要对人友好这个主题,可作为小标题,故选A。
空格前说“So many people are trying to be different. It results in them all being the same! Being quiet may mean that when you talk, people hear you louder. When you’re not trying to attract that boy or girl, they become attracted to you.(很多人都想与众不同。结果它们都是一样的!保持安静可能意味着当你说话时,人们听到的声音更大。当你不试图吸引那个男孩或女孩时,他们就会被你吸引)”,因此空格处应说明与众不同可能并不会给你带来什么收获。C选项“So trying to be different may not get you anywhere.(所以,尝试与众不同可能不会让你有任何收获)”承接上文,说明了尝试与众不同并不会给你带来什么好处或收获,因此符合语境。故选C。

【答案】Dear Mike,
I was very sorry to hear that your team lost the basketball match last weekend. It’s understandable for you to be in a bad mood. However, if you can adopt different perspectives, the loss may be a blessing.
First, it’s normal to lose in a basketball match, for you can either win or lose. If you’ve tried your best, why not lift your spirits to face up to the result? Anyway, the essence of competition lies not in victory but in participation. Besides, you can also benefit from your loss by figuring out your strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, if your team endeavors to rise above (克服,战胜) the disadvantages, you will win sooner or later.
I hope you can find my encouragement helpful. Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
