    B
When you hear the word “birthmark”, you probably think of one of those black or brown spots that you have on your body. For me, it’s different — I have them on my lips and inside my mouth. I’m used to being asked, “What are those black marks on your lips?” When I tell people they’re birthmarks, they usually say, “That’s strange.” I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks.
In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them. Some people would ask me the same questions even before knowing my name. In society I feel like we judge people by their looks before their personality.
My birthmarks are caused by a genetic(基因的) condition from my mom’s side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. Every year I plan to have a procedure to remove them. But when imagining the process, I always get nervous and give up.
My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance. Once, her grandmother told her that the birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my cousin had actually taken that suggestion, she wouldn’t be such a person as she is.
Inspired by my cousin, I am finally accepting who I am and now I don’t hesitate when someone asks me about them either. I say, “They’re beauty marks” and smile without pursing my lips.
    4. How did the author feel when asked about the birthmarks?
    A. She felt excited to show her difference.
    B. She felt annoyed to give others an answer.
    C. She was scared to be made fun of by people.
    D. She was bored to be faced with the question.
    5. Who has the similar birthmarks like the author?
    A. Her mother. B. Her grandmother.
    C. Her cousin. D. Her uncle.
    6. What can be inferred about the author’s cousin?
    A. She dislikes talking about her birthmark.
    B. She never judges others by their looks.
    C. She is more confident than the author.
    D. She has taken her grandma’s suggestion.
    7. What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Brilliant. B. Apparent.
    C. Harmful. D. Impressive.
D 5. B 6. C 7. B
根据第二段中的“In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them”(在照片中,我常常撅起嘴巴来掩饰我的胎记。
根据第一段中的“For me, it’s different-I have them on my lips and inside my mouth”(对于我而言,这是不同的-我嘴唇上和嘴巴里面都有胎记。)
依据第四段中的“My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance”(我表姐也面临同样的挑战。
根据画线词后面的“suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often...she wouldn’t be such a person as she is”(建议她应该多穿长袖......
    C
A fourth color might be added to traffic lights to better realize the potential of self-driving vehicles, as stated in a recent paper by researchers at North Carolina State University in the US.
Self-driving vehicles can do more than just drive—they are able to sense their surroundings and upload information. The added white lights would be used to signal to human drivers that autonomous vehicles are managing the upcoming traffic flow intelligently. “The white lights will tell human drivers to simply follow the autonomous vehicle in front of them.” one of the study authors Ali Hajbabaie told the university’s website.
Simulated(模拟的)models showed that autonomous vehicles were able to improve traffic flow on their own. Introducing the white light also has a positive effect on reducing fuel consumption. The higher the percentage of autonomous vehicles at a crossing, the faster the traffic moves, reducing about 40 to 99 percent of the total delay time.
As self-driving technology thrives, much infrastructure(基础设施)is needed. To begin with, the vehicle’s network that collects data about the environment and shares the data with other vehicles needs to be intelligent. High-precision maps are needed for autonomous vehicles to plan routes in detail. They can provide both updated information on traditional maps and real-time changes, such as accidents. For example, when driving around a curve, the navigation(导航)system in the vehicle needs to calculate the safe speed based on the map’s information. And if the area is foggy, the network has to alarm the other cars to slow down.
    8. What is the purpose of adding a white light to traffic lights?
    A. To warn self-driving cars to stop. B. To signal human drivers to pass the cars ahead.
    C. To help driverless cars assess traffic conditions. D. To tell human drivers to go after the cars in front.
    9. What effect would the introduction of self-driving cars bring about?
    A. Increased road safety. B. Less time stuck in traffic.
    C. Reduced fuel efficiency. D. Unpredictable traffic patterns.
    10. What is the function of high-precision maps in self-driving technology?
    A. To calculate a safe speed for vehicles. B. To provide real-time weather updates.
    C. To reduce the risk of traffice accidents. D. To offer real-time data on road conditions.
    11. What is the best title for this text
    A. Innovating the Future. B. Lighting up the Way.
    C. Overcoming the Obstacles. D. Going for Driverless Vehicles.
D 9. B 10. D 11. D
根据文章第二段“The added white lights would be used to signal to human drivers that autonomous vehicles are managing the upcoming traffic flow intelligently. “The white lights will tell human drivers to simply follow the autonomous vehicle in front of them.”
根据文章第三段“Simulated(模拟的)models showed that autonomous vehicles were able to improve traffic flow on their own. Introducing the white light also has a positive effect on reducing fuel consumption. The higher the percentage of autonomous vehicles at a crossing, the faster the traffic moves, reducing about 40 to 99 percent of the total delay time.(模拟模型显示,自动驾驶汽车能够自行改善交通状况,增设白灯对降低油耗也起了积极作用。
根据文章第四段“High-precision maps are needed for autonomous vehicles to plan routes in detail. They can provide both updated information on traditional maps and real-time changes, such as accidents.(自动驾驶汽车需要高精确地图来详细规划路线。
根据全文以及文章第一段“A fourth color might be added to traffic lights to better realize the potential of self-driving vehicles, as stated in a recent paper by researchers at North Carolina State University in the US.(美国北卡罗莱纳州立大学的研究人员在最近的一篇论文中指出,第四种颜色可能会被添加到红绿灯中,以更好地发挥自动驾驶汽车的潜力。)”
    D
Have you ever sat in hospital bed with the doctors around talking about you as though you didn’t exist? Research into patients’ view of healthcare has shown that this is common. This behaviour gets to the root of how patients evaluate the quality of care they receive.
While doctors like to focus on treatment outcomes, this isn’t how the public assess whether their doctor is good. Research has consistently shown that most patients evaluate their experiences on how polite the doctor was, not on the actual quality of medicine practised.
My mum, for example, recently started losing her sight. She went for an urgent appointment with an eye specialist at her local NHS hospital. When I telephoned her that evening to see how it went, she replied, “Oh, they were all so lovely and kind.” In fact, the clinic was running late and she’d had to wait an hour to see the nurse, and three hours to see the consultant. From a medical perspective, the consultation clearly hadn’t been a success. While they’d ruled out emergency causes for her sight loss, they hadn’t really got to the bottom of the problem. She was now back at home, still unable to see properly and with no idea if she was going to go permanently blind. But what mattered to her was that a nurse had met her at the door and took her to her seat. They’d asked about how the loss of sight had impacted on her life, so my mum felt she had received good care simply because the doctors and nurses had listened to her.
Patients don’t evaluate the actual medicine; it’s the communication skills of the doctor or the nurse that determine how they evaluate the care. If doctors or nurses listened to their patients, that means we can improve the NHS(英国国民健康保险制度)without spending money.
    12. What do we know about the research?
    A. Doctors tend to talk a lot.
    B. Patients find the root of the problem.
    C. Doctors undervalue patients’ subjective feeling.
    D. Patients think highly of the quality of their medical treatment.
    13. Why did the author’s mother praise the doctors and nurses?
    A. They stayed late to find the cause. B. They cured her of her loss of sight.
    C. They showed great concern for her. D. They reacted slowly to her condition.
    14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Doctors should be good communicators.
    B. Patients ought to be more understanding.
    C. Communication skills are the most critical for doctors.
    D. The government should invest more money in health care system.
    15. Where is this text most likely from?
    A. A guidbook. B. A magazine. C. A diary. D. A novel.
C 13. C 14. C 15. B
根据第一段的“Have you ever sat in hospital bed with the doctors around talking about you as though you didn’t exist? Research into patients’ view of healthcare has shown that this is common.
根据第三段的“But what mattered to her was that a nurse had met her at the door and took her to her seat. They’d asked about how the loss of sight had impacted on her life, so my mum felt she had received good care simply because the doctors and nurses had listened to her.( 但对她来说重要的是,一位护士在门口迎接她,并帮她找到座位。
根据最后一段“Patients don’t evaluate the actual medicine; it’s the communication skills of the doctor or the nurse that determine how they evaluate the care. If doctors or nurses listened to their patients, that means we can improve the NHS(英国国民健康保险制度)without spending money.( 患者没有评估实际的治疗;医生或者护士的沟通技巧决定了他们如何评估护理。
Did you know that it’s possible to save wet books by putting them in the freezer or refrigerator? Strange as it sounds, this simple trick can go a long way toward preserving beloved reading material that may be damaged from something as significant as flood water or as silly as knocking over a glass of water. ___16___
Make sure that the water isn’t dirty. ___17___ If a book has been soaked (浸泡) in dirty water or a colored liquid, it may be difficult to save the book. Realize, too, that the pages will never again be perfectly flat, only clear enough to read, if all goes well.
Determine the best approach to air-drying. If the book is completely soaked before freezing, don’t try to separate pages. ___18___ If possible, put a sheet of paper towel between the covers and text body. If the book is partially soaked, spread paper towel throughout the pages of the book(every 20 or so). After an hour of drying, change the towel until most water has been absorbed.
___19___ Don’t try to separate wet pages, as they may stick and tear. Put the book in the refrigerator as soon as possible. At the same time, keep the refrigerator on its “frost-free” setting which helps to avoid the formation of large ice crystals (冰晶) in items, which can cause damage. ___20___ Once it gets frozen, it allows you to open the book and spread the pages without them sticking together.
    A. Here is how to do it
    B. Freeze the book immediately
    C. Put the book in the refrigerator after it dries.
    D. The water has to be clean, for the most part.
    E. There are many ways to clean and dry a wet book
    F. Leave the book in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours.
    G. Make the book stand upright on paper towel that can absorb water.
A 17. D 18. G 19. B 20. F
根据空前“Did you know that it’s possible to save wet books by putting then in the freezer or refrigerator?(你知道把湿书放进冷冻室或冰箱是可以保存的吗?)” 所以选择项A项“Here is how to do it.(下面就是操作方法。)” 故选A。
根据空前“Make sure that the water isn’t dirty. 及空后“If a book has been soaked(浸胞) in dirty water or a colored liquid, it may be difficult to save the book. 所以选择项D项“The water has to be clean, for the most part.(在极大程度上,水必须是干净的。)”
根据空后“If possible, put a sheet of paper towel between the overs and text body. 所以选择项G项“Make the book stand upright on paper towel that can absorb water.(将书直立在吸水的纸巾上。)”
根据空后的内容、尤其是“Put the book in the refrigerator as soon as possible. 选择项中的“immediately”与空前的“as soon as possible”表述一致。故选B。
根据空后“Once it gets frozen, it allows you to open the book and spread the pages without them sticking together. 所以选择项F项“Leave the book in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours.(将书放在冰箱里至少长达24个小时。)”
It was Jennifer Williams’ mother who got her interested in books. A librarian, she ___21___ to her three children every day. When Williams, now 54, became an elementary school teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to ___22___ with reading just as she had.

Extremely thrilled to receive your letter saying that you want to have a deeper insight into Chinese music, I hasten to write to give you a full glimpse of Chinese music as well as my opinion about music.
Chinese traditional music dates back to the dawn of Chinese civilization with documents and artifacts providing evidence of a well-developed musical culture as early as the Zhou Dynasty. There are many kinds of music in China, the most important of which are classic music, folk music and pop music. It is known that music can not only help us be far away from stress and depression but also bring more friends from home and abroad to us, creating a more colorful and meaningful life for us. The reason why I enjoy pop music most is that apart from excitement and lovely tunes music takes to me, it is easy to learn.
