Once there was a businessman who was engaged in leather business, but his business failed because of his poor management, which made him lack of confidence to continue to do his business. Even worse, he owed a lot of money to others and could see no way out.
Today, it was just Christmas Day, he should have dinner with his family, but he was walking alone in the park because of business failure in order that he could relieve his sense of failure. He sat on the park bench, wondering if anything could save his company. Suddenly one of his old friends appeared in front of him.
“Oh, dear, long time no see! Merry Christmas! You look so bad, aren’t you? You must be encountering some troubles,” his old friend asked in a worrying tone.
“Merry Christmas! Well, I just encountered a big failure in my business and owed a lot of money to others. I don’t know how to continue to do my business,” the businessman replied in a low voice.
After listening to his problem, to the businessman’s surprise, his old friend took out a check, passed it to him and said, “Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time.” Then he turned and disappeared.
The businessman with a big surprising expression on his face saw the check in his hand for $500? 000! The money was more than enough to save his business. However, he didn’t plan to use it, he decided to put the check in his safe.
With the check, he was full of confidence and planned to continue to do his business again. He worked hard day by day and slowly his business began to breathe. The businessman was making money once again.

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A few years ago, I was having dinner with some good friends to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holiday. As we were finishing up that evening, one of my friends told us a very story about something that had happened the day before. Her son’s friend was in his mid-twenties and self-employed. He lived on the second floor of a house nearby. Someone who lived on the first floor had been smoking and fell asleep. The house burnt down. All the people escaped, but the house was completely destroyed with everything in it.
All this young man had were the clothes on his back and his pickup truck. He had no family in the area and nowhere to go. My friend was putting him up for a few days until he could decide what to do next.
Those of us sitting at the dinner table were horrified. Everyone started opening their wallets to contribute money. My friend put up her hand and said, “He will not accept money. We tried to persuade him, but he thinks it is charity and won’t take it. All he wants is a warm coat and some used clothing if anyone has some.”
We were all more than happy to fulfill this request and were told that he wore a size 2XL. None of us knew men who wore that size, so it was going to be a bit of a challenge to take care of this quickly.
It was a typically cold New York Christmas, and I couldn’t imagine him without a coat. I shed tears on the drive home, a combination of grateful tears for the many blessings I had in my life and sad tears for this poor youngman and his troubles.
I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with a very clear thought in my mind. I was to find this young man a coat.

One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had spared no efforts to practise my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head.
Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered still stung especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine on the shelf was turning green. Under the huge elm trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英)popping through the grass in bunches.
I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the flowers. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds, “she said, pulling a flower up by its roots. ”From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.
“But I like dandelions, ” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful even dandelions. ”My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too, “she added. ”Not everyone can be a princess so there is no shame in that. ”
Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

Today was Community Service Day at school. Maya’s class was going to make cards for the seniors living in a nursing home. It was also the first day Maya would be wearing her leg brace (腿支架) to school, which was designed to help her walk more steadily and smoothly.
It was a cold autumn morning, Maya looked down, feeling embarrassed. To make it lovelier, she had delicately decorated the brace with pretty butterfly patterns. Still, she was unsure about others’ reaction. All morning at school, kids kept glancing at her brace. To her relief, they didn’t say anything.
In the classroom, Maya was drawing little green buds (芽) and pretty flowers when her friend Samir came over and sat by her. She felt his eyes fixed on her brace and heard him asking, “What’s that for?” Not knowing what to say, Maya pretended she didn’t hear him. After a few seconds of awkwardness, she glanced back at him, and found that he looked a little sad.
After lunch, the class set off. The nursing home was on a small hill and all of them walked there happily along the path. Maya found that the brace did make it easier for her to walk up.
Maya and Samir were paired up with a lady who was 83 years old. There at the end of the hall in a wheelchair, with a big smile on her face, sat the lady, wearing a pink coat, with red lipstick and beautiful earrings. She looked bright and full of life. Moving flexibly and fast towards Maya and Samir, she greeted first. “I’m Joan, ” she said cheerfully, “Glad to meet you. ”
Maya and Samir handed her the cards they made. Joan looked at Samir’s card carefully and spoke with admiration, “You’ve written a poem! That’s so artistic!” Samir’s face reddened with shyness. Then Joan turned to Maya’s picture. “The first flowers of spring!” she cried in delight. “You really have a gift for using colour!” she said. Clearly, Joan’s praise added great power into Maya.

Amanda lived in a big modern city. Due to the high-speed development of economy, families from different backgrounds came here to find a better life. Amanda’s classmate and friend, Rama, was from one of those families.
One day after school, Amanda and Rama were chatting and Rama mentioned how much she missed her friends and hometown. “It is hard to leave,” Rama sighed, “but my family needed to be somewhere that is easier to make a living. Holding Rama’s hands, Amanda encouraged her to share more and she knew Rama loved to sing and dance with her friends back in her hometown.
After learning about Rama’s story, Amanda started to notice more students like Rama in her school. For the first time she realized that those students looked sad in their eyes. Sometimes because of their different accents, they couldn’t communicate well with others, which made them always sit or stand silently at the back of the classroom.
“They are having a hard time, we should show them kindness and love!” she told her mother one day. Amanda asked her mother what she could do to help make them feel welcome. Amanda’s mother suggested, “What about using art? Maybe it will be easier to communicate through art.” Amanda thought for a while and nodded. Like her friend Rama, Amanda loved all forms of art, like painting, singing, dancing, and performing, through which she could tell different stories about her family, and her life.
The next day, Amanda went to the Activity Center in her school and proposed her plan of an art show. The officer thought it a great idea. Inspired and excited, Amanda set about her plan with several friends. At the Activity Center they filled a room with paper, paint and pencils. They even made a small stage! Everything ready, they invited all the new students in her school and Amanda encouraged them to share something special about their hometown in any art form. To Amanda’s surprise, no one responded.

How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? Think before you act and do not spoil (损坏) what you have by desiring what you don’t have. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened.
There was once a young man who was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had wanted a beautiful sports car, and knowing his father had much money, he told him that was all he wanted.
With Graduation Day coming, the young man waited for signs that his father had bought the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his room. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped (包装) gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound (皮革精装的) Bible (圣经), with the young man’s name decorated in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, “With all your money, you give me a Bible?” He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. He didn’t want to see his father forever.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Willard P. Franklin was a skinny and short boy. From the first day he entered my junior-high classroom, he existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me, his teacher.
My attempts to develop a friendly relationship with him were always met with no reaction. Even a “Good Morning, Willard” received no reply. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word that we would collect money on Christmas for the less fortunate people in our school district. After collection, the school headteacher would show us a list of the poor families in our school and send the money to those who most needed help through the Christmas collection.
“Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help to buy food, clothing and toys for these people in need. We’ll start the collection tomorrow. ”
When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that most of the students had forgotten except a few including Willard P. Franklin. Willard dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked up to my desk.

After filling out 50 applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get -a teaching job in what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was 14-teaching English.
School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, only taking time off to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class—17 boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic (理想主义的) teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (纸团) and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounded reasonable, but the text obviously ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was a taskmaster known to be the strictest, most demanding and quickest to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed (锉) their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After 20 minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I had to face him.
Paragraph 1:
After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door.

Paragraph 2:
Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change.

“What will we be singing for the contest this year?” a student from my high school choir asked eagerly.
I worried about this moment. “I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we would skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year.”
“NO!” the kids protested.
“We’ve got to go to the contest!”
“It’s a tradition!”
Indeed, award plaques (牌匾) lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academics had reduced my choir to a mere thirty-two young, inexperienced kids who could sing only a simple melody.
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks. Quite on the contrary, more determined, they begged and insisted every day. To protect their pride, I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough. But I wasn’t a miracle worker. And so I hesitated about this dilemma.
Finally one morning I stepped into class. “Look at the clock!” I demanded. “We’ve wasted two full minutes because some of you don’t have your music ready. If we are entering the contest” The rest of my sentence was lost in cheers of delight and applause.
“From now on,” I continued when the noise weakened, “you will find the day’s lesson plan on the board. Make full preparations for each class and follow my instructions absolutely. You will work much harder than you’ve ever worked in any class before. And if one of these rules is broken, we will not go to the contest.”
I was certain they would fail to keep this contract, and no one would be embarrassed. But the kids remained focused, following the rules strictly. Each morning witnessed their diligence: working on sight-reading, learning musical terms, rehearsing, etc. Their progress was so remarkable that even I began believing in their dream.
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready and confident to take on the world! Their eyes, however, opened wide when the Madison choir marched in seventy-five members strong. My kids’ jaws dropped when 125 students from King School arrived. Two private schools came with fifty members each, and finally forty-five members from Milwaukee School of Art.

10.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When Aiden asked me to accompany him on a camping trip to the mountains, I envisioned a log cabin with a crackling fireplace, hot cocoa, and bunk beds. Imagine how my rustic, yet comfortable image of camping became a nightmare when Aiden and his older brother, Lebron, showed up with a truck filled with camping supplies-tents, rolled-up sleeping bags, and canteens! I did pack a backpack, as instructed, but I had no idea we were going on survival training!
Lebron, ever so efficient, had a schedule to keep, and he hurried me to get in so we could leave the city hustle and bustle behind us. Ahead, the mountains loomed bigger than I had remembered them; the trees were larger, and the environment was much more dangerous. At least the weather was amazing — cotton-candy clouds dotted the deep blue sky.
At the trailhead, Lebron strapped a sleeping bag onto my pack and lectured Aiden and me about hiking etiquette.
The first part of the trail looked more like a wooded road that led up the mountains than a hiking path. Soon, the path became narrower and steeper, forcing me to focus on the task at hand and to talk less. As we gained elevation, we moved above the tree line, and I could see the trail zigzagging up the mountain.
“It looks closer than it is,” Lebron said, reading my facial cues. “This is the most difficult part … watch the trail, not the view. Loose rocks and tree roots make the trail dangerous, and we have no shade.”
Finally, we reached the summit. My legs aching, I dropped my pack and groaned.
“No time to rest,” Lebron said, looking up at the sky. The weather had been warm all day, and it felt good to relax in the cool breeze. “The weather up here changes quickly, and that cool air means a storm is brewing. We need to set up camp.”

I thought he was kidding, but Lebron was quite serious.

1.参考范文:
One year later, the businessman decided to meet his old friend on Christmas Day. He was in a good mood, just like the white clouds in the blue sky. He returned to the park with the check and waited for his old friend’s arrival. After a while, his friend appeared. “Thank you so much, I put the check in my safe, but it is just your check that makes me be full of confidence and continue to do my business again, and now I am making money again. I return the check to you,” the businessman said. “Actually, it is your confidence that make you continue to make your business again,” his old friend replied.
He realized it was his newfound confidence that changed his life. Although the businessman put the check in his safe and didn’t use it in his business, it was the check that inspired him to find self-confidence that helped him continue to do his business again and gave him the power to succeed. He told his old friend what he thought about and showed his gratitude to him again. What a meaningful experience it was for the businessman. The fact has proved that there’s always a way out of any trouble as long as we are with much confidence.

Soon it was the big day.
Backstage on the night of the performance, I fell nervous. But then I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm. After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily at me. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I often recall our walk in the yard. Her smile and her words of wisdom have stayed with me and shaped me into who I am now! And this is perhaps the best gift that I’ve ever received in my life.

4.In a sudden wave of bravery Maya asked, “What’s it like being in a wheelchair?” “It helps me get around,” Joan said simply. Then, grinning, she added, “You’d be surprised at how fast I can go in this thing!” Right then, she moved the wheelchair across the room, turning around, back and forth. And what surprised Maya most was that she didn’t detect any pity or embarrassment from her. Then Maya looked up and found Joan was smiling, eyes purposefully resting on her brace. It was then that a spark of power was lit up deep inside Maya. That afternoon, the three of them had a pleasant talk over lots of things until it was dusk.
Deeply impressed by Joan, Maya offered to sit beside Samir on the bus ride back home. “Joan is great. I like her.” Samir admired. Maya nodded, lost in thought. With Joan’s wheelchair and smile in mind, she summoned up her courage and said, “The brace keeps my toe up so I can walk better.” “Really?” Samir looked amazed, reached out and touched it gently. “That’s super cool!” His words were so sincere that Maya felt warm and moved. It was a reaction that she expected deep inside her heart. Though it was autumn outside, it felt like spring for Maya. A little green bud was bursting — she and her brace looked cool, beautiful and dynamic in her and others’ eyes.

Before he could make the arrangements, he received a special letter telling him his father had passed away, and all of his possessions had been given to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.
Paragrap2:
Deep sadness and regret filled his heart when he went into his father’s house alone. He began to search through his father’s important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. He opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. The key had a label. On the label was the date of his graduation. He knew the real gift for him from his father was the sports car he had desired. He was moved to tears. What a great father he had. He felt sorry for what he had done before, but it was too late.

7.Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container. For a moment, just a moment, he managed a weak smile. Before I could say a word, he turned and walked back to his desk quietly. When I looked at his thin figure, a mixture of warmth and surprise swept over me. “Maybe I was wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I said to myself. After school, I took our collected money to the school headteacher.
When the headteacher passed me the list, I discovered Willard’s family was on the top. So surprised was I that I couldn’t help sharing with the headteacher what the boy had done. The headteacher gave a thumbs-up with a satisfied smile, nodding his head slightly. A sense of contentment spread over my face. What impressed me most was that a boy of a poor family was still willing to help others. It seemed hopeful to develop a friendly relationship with him. Being poor is not our fault but being helpful is a good virtue and a choice.

8.After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door. My boss was sitting in his chair with a poker face, gazing at me silently. Anxious and ashamed, I said nothing, wondering if he would fire me right away. He handed me an envelope, which added to my anxiety at that moment. However, my eyes were wide open when I opened it and read the letter. It was not an unemployment letter but a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should respect students’ feelings. Almost immediately, a surge of warmth rose inside me.
Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change. As the bell rang, I stood on the platform, eyes wandering across the classroom. I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let’s begin with what you think about my literature lesson.” Suddenly, a complete silence fell over the class. Each student lifted their head and cast me a puzzled look. Flashing a smile, I encouraged, “Anything you’d like to say is welcome!” At this, a ripple of excitement spread through the classroom. The literature class soon amazingly came to life thanks to their brilliant voices. It was at that time that I fully understood what my boss taught me: respecting the students instead of ignoring them will make a difference.

9.One sample writing:
Then came the turn for my choir. Extremely confident, they mounted on the stage as we rehearsed. “Smile!” I mouthed. I took a deep breath and we began. Having performed masterfully, we finished our three songs, and I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, “YOU DID IT!” What delighted me more was that they fully enjoyed their performance without getting panicked, winning storms of cheers and applause. My heart swelled with pride for this little group as they realized their dream with the same bravery they had shown from day one.
After all the choirs had performed, we waited in our assigned room for the results. Sensing their worries about the group size, I reassured them: it was the performance rather than the size that mattered and most importantly, we enjoyed it. Time ticking, kids waited anxiously. Eventually, there came the news that we got the highest marks of all. All kids were screaming and embracing. Warm tears wetting my cheeks, I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief. It was a blessing that I was surrounded by kids who had a dream, who refused to give up, who taught me never to doubt the possibility of success for any student ever again.

10.I thought he was kidding, but Lebron was quite serious. He and Aiden worked expertly, while I stood around and pretended to help, thunder rumbling in the distance. We set up near a boulder outcropping, but the wind, thunder, and lightning were relentless. As the storm rolled in with a vengeance, we took cover inside. Lebron, sensing that I was scared, reached in his backpack for some crackers and peanut butter. Slowly, but methodically, he spread the peanut butter and told stories about his camping adventures. Each time lightning lit up the tent and the thunder echoed, I cringed. “This is just a typical summer storm — they’re short lived, but intense,” Lebron stated. “The campsite might get a bit muddy, but what’s the fun in camping if you can’t get dirty! At least the rain will keep the bears away,” he said with a smile.
Just as quickly as the storm came rushing in, it stopped, allowing us to exit the tent. The view was stunning — I could see for miles, and the rain left a fresh scent of pine and an earthy smell of soil. As darkness set in, l marveled at the multitude of stars in the night sky. I won’t lie — I was yearning for a hot shower and a soft bed, but as I gazed upward at the Milky Way, I knew this was an adventure I would never forget.
