“Are you going to the audition (试演) in the dancing hall tomorrow?” someone asked my friend Connie, as we came out of ballet class.
“What audition?” I asked.
“Oh, nothing,” sad Connie. “It’s for The Ed Sullivan Show. You wouldn’t be interested.”
“Why not? I’d love to go!” I said.
A couple of girls laughed. Connie smiled at me kindly and said, “I don’t think you are ready yet, Eva.” I felt I was looked down upon, but I thought maybe she was right. Connie and the others had been studying dance most of their lives and had already been in some shows. I was only a green hand hoping to get a job in show business one day.
The Ed Sullivan Show was a big deal. It was an hour-long Sunday night show on CBS. It featured famous stars such as the Beatles and Elvis. This time, one of the performers was going to be Jimmy Durante. They were looking for six dancers to support him. Jimmy was close to stopping working but still quite famous. Frank Sinatra Jr. was also one of the performers in this show.
Later a few of us went for coffee. My classmates talked about the audition that I was “not ready for”. I listened to their discussions on the choreograph (编舞) and what to wear, and soon I realized I was not in their group as a dancer. I felt very disappointed.
But later that night, I thought a lot. Who said I shouldn’t go to the audition? I had a right to try. How would I ever know if I was good enough if I didn’t try? What did I have to lose?
I had a hard time falling asleep. When I finally did, I had a dream. A voice was speaking through a loudspeaker: it sounded like Ed Sullivan was talking about what a big show was going to be. It was only a dream but when I woke up the next day, my decision was made.

It’s time to close the door. But there were still two customers in the shop. One of them was trying on the various lipsticks while her friend was busy with the sunglasses. They must be tourists with lots of time on their hands. I patiently waited behind the counter for them to make up their mind. At 18:30, they eventually left, without buying anything. I felt very unhappy that I had wasted half an hour waiting for them.
Sometimes I wondered whether this was really what life was about. Working from 8:00 am to 18:00 pm, I could only catch a brief look of the sunrise on my way to the shop. I wished I could stand on the hill to enjoy the sunrise and sunset. I felt that life was slipping away and that I never had time to appreciate the little things in life that would make me happy.
Going home after a day’s work wasn’t a pleasure, either. At home, my family was waiting for me to cook. While preparing dinner, I had to put the laundry in the washing machine and took care of the pets. After dinner, I had to wash the dishes while the rest of my family were enjoying their own activities. I wished I could do that, too.
I was really tired, body and soul. Life couldn’t go on like this. It was my own fault that I had spoiled my family over the years by doing everything by myself and hadn’t made time for myself. No time for a walk or just to sit down for a while. Why should life be like this? I needed some time for myself, time to recharge myself and do things that would make me a better person.
So we held a family meeting that night. During the meeting, I explained why I was bad-tempered and asked them what they could do to help me out.
”What about having everyone be responsible for cleaning their own room?“ I hesitated. “And what about taking turns to do laundry and clean up after dinner?”

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Joe worked as a night watchman in a factory after he graduated from high school. It was a lonely job, but he was content. He stopped by the beach every day on his way home to watch the sunrise.
One day, he was walking on the beach when he noticed a bottle in the surf. Joe picked it up and saw a roll of paper inside it. His heart beat fast. He removed the lid and opened the letter. “Hi! My name is Ritchie. I’m sending this message in the hope that somebody will find it and become my friend.”
It saddened Joe to think of this boy waiting and hoping somebody would answer his message. He took his cell phone from his pocket and dialed the number written near the bottom of the page.
However, the number didn’t exist anymore. Joe was determined to find Ritchie, so he went straight to the city library for help. A librarian took him to a section of the library that felt deserted. There, she pointed him to the shelves filled with old telephone books. She sat down with him, and they searched the telephone books for Ritchie’s phone number together. Two hours later, the librarian let out an excited scream. “I found him!”
“Thank you,” Joe said, quickly copying down the address. He immediately headed for the address from the phone book. He almost screamed when he saw that the house at the address had been transformed into a hair salon. Joe stared at the sign. He held the message from the bottle in one fist and the paper with the address in the other. He walked in and explained everything to the barber. “Ritchie was born with disabilities. He has been using a wheelchair since he was a kid. Well, he’s an old man now. If you still want to find him, I hear he’s at the Serenity nursing home.” Joe thanked the man and drove to the nursing home.

4.阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There was once a troubled family. The parents spoiled their children. The son, John, loved to play video games all day long when summer vacation was around and he did not like to study. The daughter, Emily, on the other hand, loved studying without play. To her, video games were for foolish people who were unable to achieve anything useful. Life went on with parents complaining and not changing anything.
One day two new neighbors arrived in their neighborhood. One lived on the right side of John’s house while the other lived on the left side of John’s house. These two people were twins. They did not communicate with anyone other than themselves. John and his family felt uncomfortable living right between them. Strange sounds came from their houses every midnight until the afternoon. People heard and saw thunder and lightning coming from the house. After a couple of weeks of lightning flashing, machines roaring, this disturbed every household. Everyone could not help but wonder what their new neighbors were doing. It was whispered that they were inventing a time machine in secret.
People were beginning to dislike them. Every moment they heard these noises, they felt like something was going to explode soon. To deal with this problem John and Emily’s parents walked to both houses to speak with the owners. But on each door hung a sign that said, “DO NOT DISTURB!” They tried knocking the door and no one responded or came out from the house. The machine noise kept going but once in a while it did stop for a small break before it continued. They tried nearly every day to get the attention of their new neighbors. But in the end they gave up. They decided to send their kids to get their attention instead. So they made a plan and the kids successfully entered the neighbor’s houses.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Our wedding anniversary(纪念日)had arrived and like every other day of the year, I was very busy. My husband, Roy. sent me a beautifully wrapped present before the day and he even made a reservation at an expensive restaurant. After a hard day at work, I hurried home, ran into the house and jumped into the shower. When my sweetheart returned, I was already dressed in my finest clothes.
Just at the very moment the babysitter(保姆)arrived and we were ready to go. We were on the point of walking out of the house when the smallest member in our family came over to us with an unhappy look.
“Daddy, didn’t you mean to take me to buy Mamma a present?” Becky, my eight-year-old daughter said.
Roy looked at his watch and realized that if we were to make our reservation, we had to leave right away.
“Sorry, I was late getting home, honey,” he said.
“That’s OK,” Becky replied. “I understand.”
The entire evening was bittersweet. I couldn’t help being concerned about the disappointment in Becky’s eyes. I remembered how the joyful look had left her face, just before the door closed behind us. She wanted me to know how much she loved me. She didn’t realize it, but I already knew it very well.
Today, I can’t remember what was wrapped in that beautiful box, but I’ll never forget the special gift which I received when we arrived back home. Becky was asleep on the bed, holding a box. When I kissed her face, she awoke. “I’ve got something for you, Mamma,” she said, as a giant smile covered her tiny face. The little box was wrapped in newspaper. As I tore the paper off and opened the box, I found the sweetest gift that I have ever received.

On my way to the park, I saw Ollie sitting on the steps of his house. “It’s finally nice spring weather,” I called. “Want to skateboard?” “Shhh,” he said softly. “You’ll scare him away!”
I was about to say “Who?” when I noticed the cutest little bird in the world just sitting on Ollie’s shoulder. “Whoa!” I whispered. “Where did he come from?” “He landed on this flowerpot,” said Ollie. “And when I bent down to make sure he was OK, he just jumped right onto my shoulder!” “This one definitely acts like someone’s lost pet,” I believed. “I agree,” said Ollie. “His owner must be so worried!”
“Hi,” I said to the bird in a gentle voice. “I wish you could tell us your name. And right then, the bird chirped (叽喳叫) back. Ollie smiled.” I don’t exactly speak bird language, but I’m pretty sure he just said his name is Blue. “Is Ollie right?” I asked. “If your name really is Blue, will you sing us a song?” And I know this sounds unbelievable, but Blue seemed to understand—because right then, he chirped a lot more!
When Ollie’s grandma, Abuela, stepped outside and saw the bird, she was very astonished. “This is a big adventure for such a small bird!” she said. “Let’s get you a nice drink of water and give the animal shelter a call.”
Abuela brought out a dish of water and the phone. Soon we got through to the animal shelter. “Sorry,” the man said. “No birds have been reported missing this week. You may as well put flyers up in your area and you can also check the Found Animal recordings every day.”
Luckily, Abuela’s friend Michiko, knowing all about birds, came over with a spare cage. “His name is Blue,” Ollie told her, “you know, until we find his owner.” “What an adorable bird!” Michiko screamed.

Lily’s sister, Maya, was going home from college for the summer vacation. The day was special for 11-year-old Lily. Lily could’t wait to go to the movie and the pool—what they did together in the past.
When Maya returned home, the sisters embraced each other warmly. Usually, Lily made dessert at night while Maya would share her college experiences. But this time, the elder sister told that she had other plans. In spite of her disappointment, Lily expected them to do something together.
For breakfast the next morning, Lily invited Maya to go shopping together, and Lily wanted Maya to help her pick some summer clothes and would treated Maya to a big feast. However, Maya made friends again, only to promise that they could spend some time together at night.
So Lily rented a movie to enjoy that day. However, when Maya came home that afternoon, she told Lily that she had invited some friends over. Lily pretended to be reading, actually hiding the tears in her eyes. She didn’t want to be jealous of Maya and her friends, but she missed her sister’s company, and when Maya’s friends arrived, Lily began to make tricks. She deliberately interrupted their conversation, asking questions unrelated to the discussion, and even commented on them. Even when everyone watched TV, Lily deliberately changed the channel. But when Lily went to bed, she was ashamed. Maya was very uncomfortable and looked hurt, but didn’t blame Lily.
For several days, Lily couldn’t find a good chance to apologize to her sister. When Maya’s friends visited again, Lily was eager to join them in the backyard but decided not to. She was afraid she would make the situation worse.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Frank threw himself into his seat in the back of the Milwaukee city bus along with several other high school boys. It was another cold, gray day.
He still remembered his stomach chilling (使寒冷) into a frozen knot as he approached the locker room last month. He had read the team list posted on the locker room door, hoping, searching anxiously for his name. It hadn’t been there. It was missing. He had felt suddenly as if he had ceased (停止) to exist. Become invisible.
It wasn’t easy starting a new school, especially for Frank because he had been a star athlete in all sports at elementary school. Now, it seemed, he was nothing.
The bus came to a stop at the County Institutions grounds. A very pregnant woman hung onto the silver handrail (扶手) and slowly pulled herself onto the bus. As she fell backward into the seat behind the bus driver, her feet kicked up, and Frank saw that she wasn’t wearing any shoes.
The bus driver yelled over his shoulder, “Where are your shoes, lady? It is freezing out there.”
“I can’t afford shoes,” the woman answered. “I got on the bus just to get my feet warm,” the woman continued. “If you don’t mind, I’ll just ride around with you for a bit.” Some of the boys at the back exchanged glances and rolled their eyes.
The driver scratched (挠) his head and shouted, “Now just tell me how come you can’t afford shoes?”
“I got eight kids. They all got shoes. There’s not enough left for me.”
Frank looked down at his new Nike basketball shoes. His feet were warm and cozy. And then he looked back at the woman. Her socks were torn. Her coat, missing buttons, hung open around her stomach, as swollen (肿大的) as a basketball.
Frank didn’t hear anything around him after that. The word “invisible” popped into his mind again. An invisible person forgotten by society, but for a different reason, he thought.

Since I had always taken pride in my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates or casual arguments, I was extremely confident of myself when I was selected to represent our school in a national debate last year.
Of course, all the members in my team were good at debating and we had a very experienced teacher who trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I took part in, all the judges selected me as the best one. The more I won, the more confident I became. And my confidence reached the highest level when we were entering the final. I had every reason to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
But overconfidence brought me the unexpected downfall. During the week before the final, I began to feel so self-important that I started behaving very badly with my teammates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow response. I saw myself as the best debater who was disappointed by their bad performances. In short, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team as the final round drew near and began missing the training. My teacher was increasingly worried. My teammates were very unhappy. However, they had no choice but to rely on me to win the final. Even if they would love to kick me out of the team, they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the final eventually came. The lecture hall was crowded with audience, who were eager to watch a wonderful debate because they had learned from the news that I was the one that was most likely to be the best speaker for the debate series. I was very excited that I was able to show off my debating skills in front of a larger audience, too.

Caught in “the Web”!
Dave and Kelly loved their computer. Their parents got it for them a couple of months ago, and they had taught their kids how to use it. They bought some computer games for the kids to play and connected the computer to the Internet. The kids loved going on the Internet and visiting websites. They got to do research for their homework, play games, print colouring pages and read stories. They also got to email their friends and even chat with other kids, after getting their parents’ permission.
Because the kids liked the Internet so much, they would finish their homework, and then go to surf the Internet. Very often, they didn’t feel the passage of time and found themselves almost falling asleep in front of the computer screen.
One day they stayed up late surfing the Internet after they were done with their homework. They watched a video about a science fiction story, which described two alien species hunting human information, because aliens had a wicked intention to conquer the Earth. The species coming from a distance tried to collect every aspect of data about humans, but in vain. They were detected and driven away by watchful humans. After a while they started getting tired and they were almost falling asleep. While they were in the twilight between being asleep and being awake, they felt a strong suction coming from the computer screen. It felt like a huge vacuum cleaner!
By now, they were fully awake, but when they looked around, they did not see their living room anymore. Instead, they were drawn into the computer itself by that mysterious power. They were surrounded by a complex system of tubes and small boxes and columns. They were all in different shapes, such as being tall, short, wide, narrow, round, square, etc. More strangely, they all felt a little warm and some even were shining with real, blue or orange light. They saw themselves floating in a long tube with speeding chunks of alphabets, numbers, images and sounds. They were INSIDE the computer!
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Their dream came true and they decided to let loose and drift along the long tubes and have some fun.

参考答案:
1.One possible version:
I packed my shoes. Breathing deeply, I put on a smile and headed for the dancing hall which was filled with girls who were interested in the audition. Looking at the eagerness and kind of pride on their faces, I even questioned for a second if I made a wise decision. Just as I was waiting for my name to be called, Connie came over, surprised, “What are you doing here?” I answered, “I want to give it a try. After all, I have nothing to lose. If I succeed, I have much to gain.”
The audition began. Girls were split into several groups. They came in and out, out and in. Apparently, many girls failed and left with regret. I kept encouraging myself, “I have nothing to lose. If I succeed, I have much to gain.” So I managed to put on my best ever poise, my pink tutu swooshing gracefully with my turning and twirling. I was chosen! Looking back, I wouldn’t have realized my dream if I had been disappointed by others’ words.

I thought the enthusiasm would cool down in a few days.
But the plan has turned out to work perfectly. It has given us more time to chat and laugh together. I no longer feel like I’m caught in a trap. Now, we can go to the hill with our dog and watch the sunset after work. Best of all, knowing that I have a supportive family behind me, I don’t mind if customers stay in the shop a little bit longer by the end of the day. After asking to see Ritchie, Joe was shown to a sunlit room. There an old man in a wheelchair was looking out the window. Joe introduced himself and explained why he was there. He then held out the message to Ritchie, telling him that he’d like to be his friend. Ritchie was moved to tears. After that, Joe visited Ritchie every day. They were surprised to find that they had many common interests and shared a similar sense of humor. Joe was thankful he’d spared no effort to find Ritchie, but unfortunately, their time as friends would be short.
One day, Joe received a call, learning that Ritchie had passed away the previous night. Joe was sad, but he was even sadder to find that Ritchie had no family to mourn him. Joe attended the funeral and was surprised when a lawyer approached him afterward and told him that Ritchie had left him half a million dollars. “He thought highly of you,” the lawyer said, “because you didn’t give up the hope of finding the person who sent out a message looking for friends.”

4.One Possible Version:
Unexpectedly, the kids both experienced a journey to their own future there. The moment John set foot in the neighbor’s house he heard a voice saying, “Your sister will be meeting you soon from my brother’s house. We should start our adventure.” Then a time machine with thunder and lightning transported them into the future when they have grown up to be unhappy adults. They hate what they will look like so much that they both burst into tears.
After returning from the neighbor’s houses, the two kids changed totally. Emily, who has appreciated the proverb that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, is now trying to strike a balance between learning and entertainment. After Roy and I left for our date, Becky got busy. She decided to make a greeting card for us. First, she prepared a piece of red cardboard, because I like red the most. Next, she drew mom, dad and her on the cardboard, the three of us holding hands and smiling happily. Then, with the help of the babysitter, she folded the cardboard in the shape of a heart, on which she wrote I Love Mommy and Daddy! Finally, she tied a bow on the cover with a pink string. The instant I and Roy returned, we were greeted by the adorable card, which made our eyes watery.
My wonderful gift is still kept in a special place in my bedroom today, some thirteen years later. As my daughter was growing up into a young woman, many times I opened the box and read the card. I didn’t know if a greeting card could hold magic, but this card surely held a great deal of joy for me over the years. I not only cherished the gift, but the memory, as well. I know that I am a very lucky mother, indeed, to have such a wonderful little girl, who wanted so desperately to share her heart with me. As long as I live, there will never be another happier day.

The chirping bird sang songs in the cage like a happy angel. Ollie said,” We decided to keep the bird, but we still should spare no effort to find his owner since his owner could have been very upset without his company. “Although feeling sorry for that, we put up all the flyers. And for a month and a half, we kept checking the Found Animal recordings. Nonetheless, no one claimed Blue yet.
Another week passed before Ollie got a call from the animal shelter. Ollie instantly knew someone had claimed Blue. After meeting with the owner, amazingly, we found Blue was really the bird’s name. The owner explained Blue accidentally flew out of the car. She gave us a thankful hug, with Blue hopping and chirping on her shoulder. “No words could fully express my gratitude to you for finding Blue, without whom I could have led a lonely life! ” she wept. Both of us were unwilling to leave Blue but we would be much delighted to see that Blue reunite with his previous owner.

Next to the picture, she noticed some letters and cards that she had sent to Maya at school. The letters reminded Lily of how much she had enjoyed writing to her big sister. She decided to write Maya a letter apologizing for her behaviour. Minutes later Maya knocked on Lily’s door. “I’m the one who should be apologizing,” Maya said. “No. It’s me. I’m sorry that I’ve been so selfish. I didn’t realize how much I had hurt your feelings,” Lily said quickly.
Lily invited Maya to sit beside her on the bed. Maya saw the letter Lily had been writing. Maya picked it up and read. “I felt ashamed to ruin your party with your friends but I was eager to join in your new friends. I didn’t know how to express myself.” Maya was moved and hugged Lily. “At school I read your letters over and over again, too. They helped me bear being away from home,” Maya said. He walked quickly up to the woman and handed them to her, looking down and saying, “Here, lady, you need these more than I do.”

He then hurried to the door when he heard the woman exclaim, “Thank you, young man.” She looked up at Frank with gratitude in her eyes. “You’ve brought a little warmth into my life,” she said. “I’ll never forget your kindness.” He smiled and hurried off. He landed on the frozen snow. It didn’t matter. He wasn’t cold at all. The chill in his stomach faded away, replaced by a sense of purpose and joy. I couldn’t remember what I said during the debate, but I was sure that we were lost since the hall was very quiet when we left the stage.
As soon as the debate finished, I ran to the washroom, crying. Suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around, only to find Vivian standing there. She patted on my back and gave me a tight hug. Staying still in her arms, I felt extremely ashamed of being so mean to her and the other teammates. From this unforgettable debate, I have also learned a lesson that what defeated me was not the difficult topic, but my overconfidence.

There was only one way and that was through the heart.
