No rainforest is exactly the same—yet most rainforests are now in the small land area 23.26 degrees north and 23.26 degrees south of the Equator (赤道), between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer. You can find tropical (热带的) rainforests in South America and Indonesia. Other rainforests grow well further from the Equator, in Thailand and Sri Lanka.
Despite covering a relatively small area, rainforests have a big role to play in supporting the world. Tropical rainforests are home to a rich variety of plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain? Four hundred and eighty varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.
Rainforests are the lungs of the planet—storing huge quantities of CO2 and producing a large amount of the world’s oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival.
Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is a deliberate (故意的) way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects such as caterpillars.
To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled (缠结的) leaves and bushes, as in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where leaves are destroyed slowly and turned into food for the trees and other forest life.
Worryingly, rainforests around the world are disappearing at an alarming rate, thanks to deforestation, river pollution and soil erosion (流失) as land is being lost for agriculture and trees are cut down for wood. A few thousand years ago, tropical rainforests covered as much as 12 per cent of the land surface on Earth, but today this has fallen to less than 7 per cent.
We can only hope that the world governments work together to preserve the rainforests—beautiful and important for our existence.

Olivia Sievers, a flight instructor in Germany, is a wonderful person who loves animals. Her flights frequently took her to Buenos Aires, where she had to spend 2 days in a guesthouse. Olivia was walking toward her guesthouse one day when she noticed a stray dog (流浪狗) in front of the hotel room door. She turned her head to this dog and fed him.
The dog seemed to form a relationship with the woman and started to wait for her at the entrance gate from that day forward. Olivia gave him the name Rubio. Rubio gladly rolled his eyes, lay down on one side, and decided to wait for Olivia to stroke (抚摸) his stomach.
Olivia avoided meeting the dog after that event since he always accompanied her. Rubio would obey Olivia out the door or stand in line for her outside the guesthouse anytime she left the house. He desired the focus he once received. Sometimes animals require love and affection (感情).
Olivia continued to feed the dog because she realized she couldn’t avoid interacting with him. She covered him with a blanket when it got cold.
Olivia had to fly to BA each 3 months. The guesthouse staff informed her that the dog had visited the hotel each day for months, looking forward to meeting her. Then he decided to wait for Olivia patiently. Olivia requested that Rubio be taken in by a local shelter. They consented, but nothing came of it: Rubio fled from the shelter and returned to the guesthouse.

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Statistically speaking, it is the largest waterfall in the world. Victoria Falls is located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The falls are also close to the border of Botswana. The Zambezi River, which originates in northern Zambia, serves as the falls’ water source.
There are basically two seasons for the Victoria Falls area. The rainy season runs from late November to early April with the remaining months accounting for the dry season. One would imagine that the rainy season with more water would make the falls more spectacular (壮观的), however, the additional water and subsequent mist(水汽) in the air makes it nearly impossible to see the base of the falls.
The months of June and July are probably the best time to view the falls. The water levels are still high enough to show the beauty of the falls, but the amount of water is less, creating less mist and more visibility of the falls.
As you move into the later part of the dry season, August through October, it is quite possible that you will see more rock face than falls. However, this also opens the door for walking across the top of the falls, which can be a unique and exhilarating experience as well.
During the rainy season and high water, Victoria Falls can be a challenge to capture (抓拍) with a camera because of all of the mist in the air. However, this increases the probabilities that you will be able to capture rainbow images around the falls.
The lower water levels can create more dramatic pictures with various rocks cropping out between the falls. You should also be able to see the canyon and base of the falls. You will also be able to walk across the top of the falls and take images down the face of the falls.
15.Where does the water source of Victoria Falls originate?
A.In northern Zambia. B.In southern Zimbabwe.
C.At the border of Botswana. D.Between the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
16.When is the best time for travelers to walk across the top of the falls?
A.From November to April. B.From August to October.
C.In the months of June and July. D.In the months of May and June.
17.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 probably refer to?
    A.A camera. B.High water.
C.The rainy season. D.All of the mist in the air.
18.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A.Travel strategies at different water levels. B.Challenges for falls travelers to overcome.
C.Photo opportunities in different seasons. D.Different views of the falls all the year round.

If he is in a tight spot, says Trouble Kalua, people mention his name, asking, “What do you expect?” Shortly before his birth in Malawi, his father had lost his job as a bus conductor, making the family even poorer. Then the baby nearly died. “This boy is trouble,” his father said. “His name is Trouble.”
Across Africa names can have a story behind them. Yewande, for instance, is a Yoruba name meaning “mother has paid me a visit”, given when an older female relative dies just before a girl is born. Kiptanui may suggest at a difficult birth for mothers who speak one of the Kalenjin group of languages in Kenya.
But southern Africa stands out for nominative (提名) creativity, at least when it comes to English names.
Ask Zimbabweans about their school friends and you will hear different registers: Lovemore, Hopewell, Innocence, Patience, Knowledge, Fortune, Brilliant. A Malawian (himself Golden) lists friends named Goodfriday, Wisdom and Iron.
In Zimbabwe children were long given African names with meaning. This practice switched after British colonization (殖民), when having an English name was seen as a way of getting ahead. Names may refer to conditions around the birth, a quality parents see in the child, an aspiration (期望) for them or even for the country.
Under white rule some children were called Democracy, Freedom or, allegedly, Polling Station. Other names suggested progress. One venture capitalist recalls school friends named Computer.
Names, and the language they are in, reflect changing times, too. In Zimbabwe, whose economy is falling down, one comes across people named No Money. In many places African names are supplanting (取代) English ones. In recent years in South Africa, Enzokuhle (“to do good” in Xhosa), has become one of the most popular names, perhaps inspired by a popular song, “Enzo”.
It may be that names such as Salad Nthenda will become relics. The Malawian, whose mother ate lots of vegetables when pregnant (怀孕的), says his “name felt good from day one”. He loves the “uniqueness”. Although he is teased at times, he does not care.
19.How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
    A.By sharing a story. B.By comparing facts.
C.By reporting findings. D.By presenting figures.
20.What will a baby be named if his mother has some difficulty in giving birth to him?
    A.Yewande. B.Kiptanui.
    C.Freedom. D.Enzokuhle.
21.What does Salad Nthenda think of his name?
    A.Interesting. B.Meaningless.
    C.Important. D.Special.
22.What’s the best title for the text?
    A.Stories Behind Some Names
B.Some Strange Names in Southern Africa
C.Names in Southern Africa Are Both Creative and Meaningful
D.One’s Name Is Closely Connected with Its Country’s History

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have decided to get our hands dirty and get into gardening, but did indoor plants purify (净化) air?
In an often-cited 1989 NASA report, a scientist Bill Wolverton claimed that household plants could provide a “promising economical solution to indoor air pollution.” However, more recent researches have poured cold water on the idea.
Scientists studying the effectiveness of indoor plants for the passive removal of air pollution, found houseplants make “at best, modest contributions of about 0.9-9% to indoor pollution removal effectiveness,” they reported in 2017 in the Journal of Building and Environment. The tests, performed in a laboratory to simulate the effects on a typical U. S. home, found houseplants hardly affected the environment. To make a meaningful difference to the air quality of your home, you’d need to fill a room from top to bottom with plants, they suggest, While a single spider plant won’t purify the air, a green wall covered in plants just might, found scientists in a study published in 2020 in the Journal of Environmental Management.
While the benefits of plants purifying the air are less certain, a recent study from Princeton University finds that gardening is beneficial for physical and mental health. Another study found that indoor gardening lowered stress responses compared to the demands of completing a computer task.
Although plants can make your home a more pleasant environment and taking care of them can have mental health benefits, it’s unlikely they’ll do much to purify the air-unless you’ re going to buy hundreds. So if you’ re concerned about air quality in your home, we’ll advise you to invest in an air purifier.
23.What can we infer about the 1989 NASA report?
A.It agreed with the latest research. B.It had a great impact on the economy.
C.It suggested plants purified indoor air. D.It provided much evidence for experiments.
24.What is the main idea of paragraph4?
A.The recent studies on air quality. B.The healthy benefits of gardening.
C.Professors’ views on indoor pollution. D.Comparison between gardening tasks.
25.How should we remove indoor air pollution according to the text?
A.By using an air purifier. B.By growing particular plants.
C.By improving gardening skills. D.By decorating walls with plants.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic has badly affected the food industry, the prefabricated food (预制菜) market has witnessed a fast growth.
“I bought some prefabricated food in late April when my community was locked down due to the coronavirus outbreak,” a Beijing-based resident Yu told Global Times. “It was then that I realized there were so many different sorts of prefabricated food. All you need to do is to put some water into the heating package and a fair meal would be ready in minutes.”
Prefabricated food has become increasingly popular over the last two years, with plenty of companies entering the business and different kinds of productions keeping hitting the shelves. The total market scale for prefabricated food reached 345.9 billion yuan in 2021. It is expected that China’s prefabricated food market will stay a high growth rate in the near future, with a market scale estimated to reach 1.07 trillion yuan in 2026.
Many investors have started to pour money into it. From 2013 to 2021, a total of 71 investments were conducted in the prefabricated food sector(行业). Even so there are problems linked to the growth of the industry. For instance, the prefabricated food industry is made up of a long value chain from production, cold-chain logistics(冷链物流) to delivery, which requires companies to realize smooth operation.
In addition, the sector’s product quality problem has also begun to come under the spotlight, becoming one of the most common complaints by consumers, according to an analysis released by China Consumer Association(CCA). “There are prefabricated food products with no detailed labels and many restaurants do not inform customers when offering them prefabricated food.” CCA’s analysis said.
CCA emphasized that with the rapid development of the prefabricated food market, relevant rules need to be rolled out to promote the standardized development of the industry and to guide the industry’s healthy growth.
26.What can we infer from the Beijing-based resident Yu’s description?
A.She suffered a lot during the period when her community was locked down.

    A.Canceling some rules.
    B.Making some regulations.
    C.Promoting the sales.
    D.Enriching the production varieties.

Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system to help historians renovate the writings and identify when and where they were written.
Many ancient populations used writings, also known as inscriptions (碑文), to document different parts of their lives. The inscriptions have been found on materials such as rock, ceramic (陶瓷) and metal. The writings often contained valuable information about how ancient people lived and how they structured their societies. But in many cases, the objects containing such inscriptions have been damaged over the centuries. This left major parts of the inscriptions missing and difficult to identify and understand. In addition, many of the inscribed objects were moved from areas where they were first created. This makes it difficult for scientists to discover when and where the writings were made.
The new AI-based method serves as a technological tool to help researchers repair missing inscriptions and estimate (估算) the true origins of the records. The researchers, led by Alphabet's AI company DeepMind, call their tool Ithaca. The team said it trained Ithaca on the largest collection of data containing Greek inscriptions. Feeding this data into the system is designed to help the tool use past writings to predict missing letters and words in damaged inscriptions. The researchers reported that in experiments with damaged writings, Ithaca was able to correctly predict missing inscription elements 62 percent of the time. In addition, the tool was 71 percent correct in identifying where the inscriptions first came from. And, the system was able to effectively date writings to within 30 years.
When historians work on their own, the success rate for restoring damaged inscriptions is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent. The team is currently working on other versions of Ithaca trained on other ancient languages. DeepMind has launched (发行) a free, interactive tool based on the system for use by researchers, educators, museum workers and the public.

The Apostolic Library in Vatican City is home to ancient writings, rare books and reading rooms. Now, it is opening a small new space to the public where modern-day artwork can be seen next to the library's treasures.
The first show at the space is called Tutti, the Italian word for all. It was suggested by Pope(教皇) Francis' 2020 letter called “Brothers All”. The message appealed for environmental renewal, greater human unity and a more just socio-economic order in the world after the COVID-19 crisis.
Artist Pietro Ruffo of Italy's capital, Rome, was invited to design the first show. Maps and migration (迁徙) are among the common subjects of his work. At the Library, he transformed one room into a forest. In another room, Ruffo designed a modern version of one of the library's ancient maps of the Nile River. He placed both maps side by side.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church and Vatican City ruler, Pope Francis, opened the Apostolic Library's new space last week. Pope Francis said the world was in need of new maps after COVID-19. He called for a greater sense of brotherhood. “Humanity needs new maps to discover the sense of love, of friendship and the common good,” he said. “We need a new beauty that isn't the usual reflection of power of some but a courageous map of everyone's diversity(多样性).”
The property of former US businessman Kirk Kerkorian paid for the project. Early in Francis' time as pope, he had appealed for the Apostolic Library to open itself up more to the outside world. In 2016, Francis declared the pope's summer home in Castel Gandolfo open to visitors.

Let us look at some vocabulary and pronunciation differences in different regions of the US.
    Vocabulary
One of the main features of different regional varieties of American English is vocabulary. Different words can be used for the same idea or concept, depending on the region of the US.
Sugary, carbonated drinks have different names depending on where you are from.
In the Midwest, the western part of the state of Pennsylvania, and parts of the Appalachian Mountains, especially in the state of West Virginia, people call the drinks “pop”.
In parts of the Northeast and the West Coast, they are called “soda”. In addition, people in some southern states use one name for all those kinds of sugary, carbonated drinks. They call it “Coke”, which is short for Coca Cola.
    Pronunciation
In the US, people say some of the same words in different ways, depending on where they grew up.
One pronunciation variation is a difference in how many syllables (音节) make up the word, “caramel”. Syllables are the parts a word is naturally divided into when pronounced.
“Caramel” (two syllables) or “caramel” (three syllables) is a light brown candy made from butter, sugar, and milk. In much of the Northeast and parts of the South, this word is pronounced with three syllables, /CA-ra-mel/. In parts of the Appalachian Mountains and much of the Midwest, many Americans pronounce this word with two syllables, as in /CAR-mel/.
These two pronunciations can have different meanings depending on the speaker or region. Caramel (two syllables) may mean a mixture of just sugar and water that turns brown when boiled. Caramel (three syllables) may mean the light brown candy.
Today we looked at some differences in vocabulary and pronunciation in regions of the US. If you like learning about these variations in American English, please write to us in the comments. We would love to share more about this subject!

49.What causes people in America to say the same words in different ways?
A.What they eat. B.When they were born.
C.Where they grew up. D.Where their parents were born.
50.Where is this text likely from?
A.A tourism brochure. B.A textbook of geography.

It’s no surprise that wasting things is a nightmare for the environment — everything that we eat, wear, and consume takes up natural resources. When it comes to food waste, the environment has a double whammy — water, packaging, transportation, and agricultural resources get used up, and leftover sandwich or expired (过期的) broccoli you bought in hopes of healthy eating releases greenhouse gases as it decomposes in a landfill.
A new study from the UN Environment Program has found that a fair amount of food may never reach our mouth. Some get lost in production process, but it is mostly households that are to blame: the major waste results from our kitchen. 11 percent of the food in our fridges ends up in the trash, compared to a mere 2 and 5 percent respectively, from grocery stores and fast-food restaurants. These data madden almost half of the world’s population who are still struggling for healthy food. But surprisingly, the new study found that even less-developed countries are guilty of astonishing food waste, which is previously being thought of only as a rich-nation issue.
So what can we do? Something crucial is being more considered and prepared when going to the grocery store. Make a list of meals you want to cook, and then only buy fresh produce that you will 100 percent be eating in the next few days.
Societally, enhancing education on food preservation, food recycling and composting (堆肥), and pushing companies to sell smaller quantities food for one or two persons could all play a helpful role in bringing down the massive pile of food waste, says Edward Jaenicke, a professor of agricultural economics.
While some climate change related issues seem above our individual choices to solve, like the sea level rise, food waste is something we can actually make an impact on, by shopping smart, learning how to compost, and even getting creative with ingredients in the kitchen. We can actually make a difference by making some efforts or good choices or even changes in life.

A.Poor countries are also wasting lots of food.
B.Food waste in developed countries is serious.
C.The economy determines the degree of waste.
D.Sufficient food supply remains a big challenge.
54.Which suggestion may be a solution to food waste according to the text?
    A.Improve food sale strategies.
B.Educate students to avoid junk food.
C.Buy what you eat and eat what you buy.

Opening a good book can take you on an adventure but sometimes, it’s not what’s on the pages, but what’s been left in them is the most exciting part for Sharon McKellar, a librarian at the Oakland Public Library. She has been collecting mementos left in the library for years. Now. she’s finally found a use for all those old family photos, notes, coupons recipes and concert tickets she’s collected in books over the years.
McKellar started the “Found in a Library Book” project — an online database of all the things found in books at the library. “It started out as my personal collection, but I put out a call to other library staff, just to see if anybody had anything they’d be willing to share, and was just totally inundated with other people’s little collections of all sorts of things they had found,” McKellar told CBS News.
McKellar has added 370 mementos to the library’s online collection -but she said she had a couple hundred more to upload. Many of the mementos are notes and some are book reviews left behind for the next reader: “I loved this book. It stole my heart and made me cry. When you find tear stains, you will know they are mine.”
McKellar said that while the origins of the forgotten mementos remain a mystery, some people have recognized items on the online database, “One person named Susan reached out because one of the love notes looked like her parents’ handwriting and the kind of notes they used to leave each other,” she said.
The project is fairly new, but McKellar hopes it inspires people to dive into books at their local library, “You never know what you’ll find. You just have a sense of shared space in community.” McKellar said. “I think part of why people are especially excited about that right now is we have obviously been in a fast-paced society. So, it is a way to sort of feel a connection with people who you don’t even know through these forgotten objects.”

China has released the first national draft guideline on the use of self-driving vehicles for public transport, a key move in speeding up the large-scale commercialization of autonomous driving technology and encouraging local authorities to create the relevant management policies, industry experts said.
The country will encourage the use of self-driving vehicles such as buses in an enclosed Bus Rapid Transit or BRT system, and allow autonomous vehicles to offer taxi services under simple and relatively controllable scenarios(方案)The national draft rules on self-driving vehicles are expected to better regulate the whole industry,  providing a reference and guidance for local authorities that have yet to issue similar guidelines.
The draft regulation classified autonomous vehicles into three types:conditionally, highly and fully autonomous vehicles, depending on the degree of their autonomous capacity. The guideline said the first two types should have human drivers. Remote drivers or safety supervisors are essential for fully autonomous vehicles. In addition, safety should be the top priority in the management of self-driving vehicles. The guideline also requires that the routes of autonomous vehicles should be far away from heavily populated areas such as schools hospitals and large shopping malls.
Since China has taken the lead in the research development and application of autonomous driving technologies, the latest move will encourage self-driving companies to carry out road tests and commercial operations of robotaxi services in more cities, promoting the large-scale commercial use of autonomous vehicles across the nation.
Some local governments have already rolled out a series of supportive policies to promote the commercialization of autonomous driving technology. For instance in July, Beijing launched China’s first pilot area for commercial autonomous driving vehicle services. However, a supervisor will still sit in the front passenger seat to ensure safety
"Currently, only a few countries have rolled out policies at the national level that support the development of autonomous vehicles,”said Lyu Jinghong an intelligent-mobility analyst, Lyu added that clear regulations at the national level will encourage local governments and autonomous driving companies to speed up the application of self-driving technology.

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 2018 report by scientists, IQs of a group of students were very high when a very strong wind came; but after the strong wind, their IQs were 10% below. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low — pressure days. There is “good weather” for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the problem of weather.
66.When do people in the Northeast in America have more heart trouble?
    A.In February. B.In July. C.In August. D.In November.
67.Which is not mentioned in the text that weather has an effect on?
    A.People’s health. B.People’s appearance.

68.How can people turn out to be at about 18℃?
    A.More hesitant. B.More friendly.
    C.More energetic. D.More generous.
69.Why does the text mention “People leave more bags on buses and in shops” in paragraph 5?
A.People can feel best when air pressure is high.
B.People may be forgetful when air pressure is high.
C.People may buy more things when air pressure is low.
D.People can’t remember things so well when air pressure is low.

As is known to us all, cats are difficult to track. On nearly a weekly basis, my owe cats disappear somewhere in the house, hiding while I fruitlessly tear the place apart and ignore the sinking fear that they may have gotten outside. After some period of time, they just... reappear.
Thanks to a new study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, we now know that our cats likely never have the same worries about us. Cats, the study suggests, are able to track their owners’ whereabouts, using only the sound of the human voice.
While researchers have long known that cats possess object permanence, or the ability to recognize the existence of an object even when it is no longer immediately seen, the real-time “tracking” capabilities shown in this study open up new ways to study cats’ minds.
“Fewer research reports have been made about cats’ mental and behavioral mechanisms (机能)than those about dogs’?, Saho Takagi, a doctoral student at Kyoto University and the lead author of the study, wrote in an email to Inside Science.
In a series of three experiments, Takagi’s team observed how cats placed in a familiar room responded to a series of sounds played from speakers located both inside and outside of the room. The first experiment used human voices, the second used the sounds of other cats, and the third used electronic sounds. Takagi found that while the cats had no strong reaction to the electronic or cat sounds, hearing an owner’s voice without the owner present in the room left the cats noticeably confused. The sound of an unfamiliar human’s voice also caused confusion, though not as much as a cat’s owner did.
70.How does the author’s mood change according to paragraph 1?
    A.From anxiousness to relief.
    B.From happiness to terror.
    C.From helplessness to craziness.
    D.From eagerness to nervousness.
71.What have researchers known about cats for a long time?
A.They may be lacking in object permanence.
B.They possess a more brilliant mind than dogs.
C.They can keep track of something that is out of sight.
D.They have more complex behavioral mechanisms than dogs.
72.Which of the following apparently confused the cats?
    A.Electronic sounds. B.A stranger’s voice,
C.Other cats’ sounds. D.Their owners’ voice.
73.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Cats make sense of their surroundings by sight.
    B.Cats have different communication skills.
C.Cats locate their owners through hearing.
D.Cats develop a unique relationship with humans.
