The Piraha are a primitive Amazonian tribe (部落) of hunter-gatherers who live deep in the Brazilian rainforest. The tribe has survived, their culture well-preserved, for centuries, although there are now only around 200 left. The Piraha, who communicate mainly through sounds and whistles, have fascinated scientists for years, mainly because they have almost no words for numbers. They use only three words to count one, two, and many.
We know about the Piraha thanks to Professor Dan Everelt, who spent seven years with the tribe in the 70s and 80s. Everelt discovered a world without numbers, without time, without words for colors, without clauses and without a past tense. Their language, he found, was not just simple grammatically; it was limited in its range of sounds and differed between the sexes. For the men, it has just 11 speech sounds; for the women, it has only 10, the smallest number of speech sounds in the world. The language sounds more like humming than speech. The Piraha can also whistle their language, which is how men communicate when hunting.
Their culture is similarly constrained. The Piraha can’t write, have little collective memory, and no concept of decorative art. In 1980 Everelt tried to teach them to count, he explained basic counting skills to an enthusiastic group fond of learning them to trade with other tribes. After eight months, not one could count to ten; even one plus one was beyond them. The experiment seemed to confirm Everelt’s theory: the tribe just couldn’t understand the concept of number.
The Piraha’s inability to count is important because it seems to disprove Noam Chomsky’s influential Theory of Universal Grammar, which holds that the human mind has a natural ability for language, and that all languages share a basic rule structure, which enables children to understand abstract (抽象的) concepts such as number. One of Chomsky’s workmates has recently gone on an expedition (远征) to study the tribe. We do not yet know if the Piraha have persuaded him to change his theory.

The day had finally arrived. Skyler and Kenny waited expectantly by the door. When they heard the familiar “thump, thump” of their father’s car as it turned off the street and into the driveway, the children ran outside, zipped (快速移动) past their father and hurried into the back seat of the car.
They were greeted by a familiar furry face and a wagging tail. Both face and tail belonged to Daisy, their three-year-old German shepherd. In the seat beside her lay her harness (背带). It was the symbol of Daisy and the children’s hard work. If all had gone well this afternoon, the harness would become Daisy’s work uniform, a sign to the world that she was a fully trained service dog.
Every day for eighteen long months, Skyler and Kenny had trained Daisy to work with the visually impaired: people with sight problems or blindness. First, they trained her to perform the tasks that every obedient dog should know. Daisy learned to sit, to walk on a leash (皮带), and to settle patiently and wait. Those simple tasks came easily to their intelligent pup.
But the more challenging tasks took time and patience. Daisy learned to move carefully around objects like signposts and trash cans. She needed to keep well clear of them in order to guide her owner along a safe path. Daisy learned to stop at the edge of a staircase, or any other spot that required a step up or down. A professional service dog trainer helped with the most challenging tasks. He taught Daisy to ignore orders that might put her owner in danger.
Today, all of their hard work had come to a conclusion. Daisy had taken her service dog exam. But did she pass? Skyler and Kenny followed their father into the front hallway, with Daisy tagging close behind. They looked at their father expectantly. Their father gave a smile and a nod. The children ran off to tell their mother the news.
5.What were the children waiting for by the door?
A.A gift in the back seat.

A.Hard and dangerous.
B.Easy and purposeful.
C.Professional but challenging.
D.Amusing but time-consuming.
8.What was probably “the news”?
A.Daisy would be trained again.
B.Daisy would be free of harness.
C.Daisy didn’t do well in the exam.
D.Daisy became a qualified service dog.

As online learning becomes more common and more and more resources are converted (改变) to digital form, some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and, in their place, everyone should be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription (订购).
Supporters of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are expensive to maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they won’t have to travel to a library to get a book; they can simply click on what they want to read and read it from wherever they are. They could also access more materials because libraries won’t have to buy physical copies of books; they can simply rent out as many digital copies as they need.
However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books and resources are associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. For example, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause numerous health problems, blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain.
Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries offer is book lending. Libraries have a number of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location. A Pew survey conducted in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their local library would have a major impact on their community. People see libraries as a way to connect with others and get their questions answered, benefits tablets can’t offer nearly as well or as easily.
While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens, despite the countless issues surrounding them. It would also end access to many of the benefits of libraries that people have come to rely on. In many areas, libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object.
12.What benefits do the supporters believe to get after shutting down libraries?
A.It is not expensive to maintain the libraries.
B.More people are inspired to spend more time reading.
C.Digital copies can be rented everywhere.
D.It is easier to click on what they want to read.
13.What can we learn from the Pew survey conducted in 2015?
A.People have divided opinions.
B.Tablets can’t help people read well.
C.Libraries strengthen the bond with people.
D.Closing the library has some benefits.
14.What is the writer’s attitude towards shutting down public libraries?
A.Favorable B.Unclear C.Indifferent D.Opposed
15.Which is the best title of the text?
A.Libraries irreplaceable.
B.Tablets needed.
C.Online learning popping up.
D.Libraries gaining popularity.
Sometimes shipwrecks (沉船) contain sunken treasure, loads of gold or jewelry. Other shipwrecks are themselves the treasure— the stories of their ill-fated voyages creating a legend that makes them sparkle far more than any gold or precious stones.
The wreck of HMS Endurance, which has finally been located deep beneath the icy seas of Antarctica after being lost 107 years ago, was arguably the most valuable shipwreck ever sought. That’s because its discovery adds another thrilling new chapter to an already fascinating tale of perseverance and survival that has echoed down the decades and still inspires today.
Incredibly well preserved at a depth of almost two miles, the ship is little changed from the day in November 1914 when it finally sank beneath the ice. Endurance became embedded in ice while crossing Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. The video shot by underwater search vehicles shows painted timbers, an undamaged guardrail (护栏) and the name “Endurance” written above the five-pointed symbol of a polar star.
“I tell you, you would have to be made of stone not to feel a bit soft at the sight of that star and the name above, “Mensun Bound, the mission’s marine archaeologist, told the BBC. “You can see a porthole (舷窗) that is in Shackleton’s cabin. At that moment, you really do feel the breath of the great man upon the back of your neck.” Shackleton’s leadership was crucial to getting his men out alive. The reason why Shackleton is still applauded as a great man becomes obvious when you consider what he achieved in the face of disasters and hardships during his 1914-16 expedition. The practicality and humanity he showed in the face of severe situations was arguably praised.
16.What makes Endurance the most valuable shipwreck?
A.The treasure aboard. B.Its inspiring stories.
C.Its undamaged guardrail. D.The symbol of a polar star.
17.What can we know about Endurance when it is discovered?

B.It is beyond recognition from the day when it finally sank
C.It becomes fixed firmly and deeply beneath the icy seas
D.Its name above the five-pointed symbol of a polar star is gone.
18.What can we infer from Mensun Bound’s words?
A.The floating ice is as hard as stones.
B.The well-preserved shipwreck is amazing.
C.The heroic deeds of Shackleton are touching.
D.The discovery of Endurance is challenging.
19.What is the text type of the passage?
A.A book review. B.A news story.
C.A biography. D.A travel journal.
First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. It may save a life. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim’s condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain.
First aid measures depend upon a victim’s needs and the provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal (脊柱) injury and paralysis (瘫痪).
Despite the varieties of injuries, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details of the injury or illness, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim’s condition is known by the acronym (字母缩写词) ABC, which stands for:
A-Airway: is it open and clear?
B-Breathing: is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for breathing.
C-Circulation: is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding extremely? Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.
20.First aid may bring about all the following results EXCEPT _________.
A.saving a victim’s life
B.preventing a victim’s condition from getting worse
C.relieving a victim from pain
D.helping a person avoid sudden illness or injury

A.to make sure what to do and what not to do
B.to refer to all kinds of handbooks on first aid
C.to remove the ring he/she may be wearing
D.to take him/her to a hospital at once
22.In giving first aid to a victim, you should first of all ________.
A.remove him from the accident scene B.call for professional medical help
C.turn him over D.examine him carefully
23.The purpose of the passage is to tell the readers ________.
A.the importance of protecting the accident scene
B.what professional medical help is
C.some basic facts about first aid
D.who can offer first aid
New efforts are being made to prevent American college campuses from cigarette smoking. Twenty colleges in the United States recently received money to help protect their campuses from the harm of cigarettes.
Supporters say that every child deserves to grow up in a safe and healthy environment free from harmful second-hand cigarettes. And in November, smoking at college campuses may become illegal.
Before banning smoking at college campuses, the US has passed laws banning smoking at most workplaces. 27 American states ban smoking in all indoor workplaces.
Those supporting smoke-free at workplaces and college campuses give one major reason: the bad influence of smoking on health.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says smoking has a great influence on health. They think cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Smoking is responsible for 480,000 deaths every year.
Supporters say the bad influence of second-hand smoke makes it a public health problem. Some also say that college campuses are a good place to ban smoking.
Gary Reedy, the CEO of the American Cancer Society, said it was important to stop college students from smoking, and he expected to successfully create a cigarette-free generation (世代).
The CDC found that 13 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 24 smoke cigarettes. Reedy says that reducing the number of college students who smoke can help reduce the number of older adult smokers. He also says once a person starts smoking, it is hard to stop.
24.Who are the new efforts good for?
A.College students. B.The CDC.
C.Young smokers. D.People in public places.
25.What makes the action to ban smoking possible?
A.The bad influence of smoking. B.Money wasted on cigarettes.
C.Laws passed by the US. D.Public attention to health.
26.Which one is Reedy’s opinion?
A.Smoking spreads easily among college students.
B.Smoke-free campuses have a long-term influence.
C.It is easier for college students to stop smoking.
D.There’re more older adult smokers in the world.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Second-hand smoke is affecting college students too
B.Groups take steps to protect college students
C.Cigarettes should be totally banned in college
D.Banning smoking is being tried at US colleges
Some of the world’s largest telescopes are listening for signals from distant alien civilizations. The search is an effort to find artificial-looking signals that might have come from a technologically advanced civilization in a far-away solar system.
It is a new time for the search for extraterrestrial (外星球的) intelligence research, known as SETI, which is opening up thanks to machine-learning technology. The problem of big data is relatively new for SETI. For decades, the field had been limited by having hardly any data at all. Astronomer Frank D.Drake pioneered SETI in 1960, when he pointed a telescope towards two stars and listened for radio transmissions. Most of the SETI searches that followed were also limited to a small number of stars.
But in 2015, the biggest SETI programme ever in California: the Breakthrough Listen project searched one million stars for signs of intelligent life. The project looks for radio emissions that come from the direction of a star.
The trouble is that these searches get a lot of data-including false positives from mobile phones, GPS and other aspects of modern life. “The biggest challenge for us in looking for SETI signals is not at this point getting the data,” says Sofia Z. Sheikh, an astronomer at the SETI Institute. “The difficult part is to distinguish signals from human or Earth technology from the kind of signals we’d be looking for from technology somewhere else out in the Galaxy.
Going through millions of results of observation manually (手动地) isn’t practical. A common approach is to use algorithms(算法). Machine-learning algorithms are trained on large amounts of data and can learn to recognize features that are characteristic of earthly interference.
“Still, SETI will probably continue to use a mixture of classical and machine-learning approaches to sort through data,” says Jean-Luc Margot, a professor at UCLA.“Classical algorithms remain excellent at picking up signals, and machine-learning can not solve all the problems of particular situations.”
28.What had limited SETI for decades?
A.Artificial-looking signals. B.Machine-learning technology.
C.Being short of data. D.Dealing with big data.
29.What can we know about SETI before the Breakthrough Listen project?
A.It only searched a few stars. B.It found signs of intelligent life.
C.It stored a large number of signs. D.It searched false data from many stars.
30.Why are machine-learning algorithms used to deal with data?
A.It is skilled in picking up signals.
B.It can decrease earthly interference.
C.It’s unnecessary to employ many people to do the job.
D.It can recognize signals from Earth efficiently.
31.What can we infer from Jean-Luc Margot’s words?
A.Scientists will abandon classical algorithms.
B.It’s a hard job to sort through a huge amount of data.
C.Machine-learning will replace classical approaches.
D.Classical algorithms will continue to be adopted.
From writing Shakespeare-style poetry to making music, ChatGPT has amazed the world since its launch in late 2022 by the US-based company Open AI. It even passed several law exams in four courses at the University of Minnesota, US, according to CNN.
The AI program can answer questions on a whole host of topics, and write essays, stories and any other written texts you can think of. It does this by drawing on information collected from a large corpus (语料库) of text data.
What makes ChatGPT so impressive? As Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI said in an interview with Forbes, “it’s not actually fundamentally new technology that made this (ChatGPT) have a moment.”
According to MIT Technology Review, ChatGPT is based on GPT-3, a large language model. Because texts are more complicated than the meaning of every word combined, language models require a type of neural network (神经网络) that can make sense of texts.
One breakthrough behind today’s model is a network called Transformer, which was invented by Google researchers in 2017. The neural network can infer word meanings by tracking where the word appears in a sentence. Transformer can therefore capture the meaning of texts more accurately.
The GPT models built by OpenAI combined Transformer with unsupervised learning, meaning that the models can learn by themselves without being told what to look at. ChatGPT can now generate human-like responses instantly due to the large scale (规模) of texts it learned from.
“One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back, very confidently, with falsities,” Michael Wooldridge at the Alan Turing Institute in London, UK, told The Guardian. This means that ChatGPT doesn’t know the truth about the world — it learns information from various resources but it cannot decide what is true or false.
Some argue that ChatGPT will be used to generate fake news, spread falsities, or be used for ill purposes. As for education, many US schools recently banned students from using ChatGPT on school networks because students began to use it as a shortcut for essays.
32.How does ChatGPT work?
A.By making use of its large collection of texts.
B.By gathering different information.
C.By categorizing information by theme.
D.By simplifying complicated texts.
33.What is the new technology behind ChatGPT?
A.Its neural network can capture texts quickly.
B.Its Transformer can produce human-like responses instantly.
C.Its language model can track words accurately.
D.Its model combines Transformer with unsupervised learning.
34.What is one of the biggest problems with ChatGPT, according to Wooldridge?
A.It processes information slowly. B.It learns from limited resources.
C.It can generate false answers. D.It can be used for ill purposes.
35.Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.ChatGPT writes miracles B.ChatGPT meets challenges

Have you ever suddenly developed an appetite from a passing glance at a freeway billboard featuring a brightly colored cheeseburger, or decided to step into a candy or ice cream store displaying a window full of lively shades and hues (色调) of sweet treats? If so, you are in good company. Unless we are medically restricted or strictly dieting, we are not likely to resist inviting fare simply because we recognize the lack of nutritional value.
Devina Wadhera and Elizabech D.Capaldi-Phillips in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food recognize the impact of sensory cues (信号) on food consumption and enjoyment, and the potential they have to promote healthy eating behavior. They cite previous research in providing some interesting examples of the visual impact of different color schemes (方案) on taste and food enjoyment. They note that pink food on a white plate was considered sweeter and more flavorful than the same food on a black plate. Apparently, we consume with more of our senses than we realize. So given the rainbow of colors around us when faced with so many appealing food choices, is there any why to control our appetite? Thankfully, some research says yes.
Oliver Genschow demonstrated that when it comes to eating less colors impact consumption! They specifically researched the effect of the color red. They found that people ate fewer pretzels when using a red plate, as opposed to white or blue, and drank less from a red cup than a blue cup. They suggest that the color red reduces food and drink intake by functioning as a stop signal.
But when it comes to healthy eating, instead of putting on a pair of sunglasses to block the inviting hues of food cues, consider the value of discipline. Healthy eating involves intentional choices, not mindless responses to sensory cues. And before you invest in many red tableware to slim down, remember that what goes onto those plates is much more important.
36.What may be a major reason for us to refuse eye-catching food?
A.The shortage of nutrition. B.The rich color of fine foods.
C.The doctor’s instructions. D.Advertisements everywhere.
37.What might be dealt with in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food?
A.Benefits of different color schemes.
B.Interesting examples of food service.
C.Potentials to promote food consumption.

38.What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A.Follow the sensory response.
B.Make food choices sensibly.
C.Wear sunglasses to block colors.
D.Avoid colorful food intentionally.
I was having a great morning until I sat down in front of my office computer. “Your password has run out,” a server message flashed on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesn’t seem like a big deal unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase (大写的) character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one number. Oh, and the whole thing can’t be fewer than eight characters. And I can’t use any of the same passwords I’ve used in the past three months.
Suddenly I was cross. What didn’t make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. The flashing cursor (光标) was still waiting for me to type a password that I’d have to re-enter many times for the next 30 days. I remembered a tip from my former boss: I’m going to use a password to change my life.
I decided to choose a password, which would remind me that I shouldn’t let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it. I made my password Forgive@h3r.
I had to type this statement several times a day. Each time my computer would lock. Each time my screen saver with her photo would appear. Each time I would come back from eating lunch alone. In my mind, I wrote “forgive her” every day.
The simple action changed the way I looked at my ex-wife. That constant reminder led me to accept the way things had happened at the end of my marriage and adopt a new way of dealing with my depression. As the month wore on, I felt slow healing began to take place. By the time my server reminded me to reset my password the following month, I felt free.
39.According to the author’s company, which code is suitable?

B.To protect his computer against hacker attacks.
C.To reduce his frustration of the recent divorce.
D.To inform people of the importance of forgiveness.
42.What is the best title of the passage?
A.How a Password Changed My Life
B.What an Unsuccessful Marriage Taught Me
C.Learn the Best Way to Deal with Depression
D.Choose a Suitable Password for Your Computer
Born in France, but raised in Spain, linguistics and literature professor Juan José Ciruela Alferez from the University of Granada is passionate about Chinese literature and has been doing some research about it. With painstaking effort, his Spanish translation of a Chinese classic was published last year.
Ciruela said translating the novel was an interesting challenge. In recent years, many Chinese works have been introduced to Spain. However, as most of them had been translated first into English and then from that language into Spanish, much of the originality was lost. For this reason, when the Spanish publishing house Kailas contacted Ciruela to translate it directly from Chinese, he accepted the mission immediately, even if it presented difficulties like a heavy workload within a short time limit.
“I encountered various difficulties, especially at the beginning of the task,” said Ciruela in an interview. “This novel, in particular, needs a prior reading process in which the translator gets into the plot and the characters, since at first it is difficult to enter the world that the novel constantly raises. So I read the novel first in Chinese, paying attention to all those details and how all of that could be translated in a way that the Spanish readers would understand.
For Ciruela, the most important criterion when translating is fidelity (忠诚) to the original text. While it is true that one cannot always be strictly faithful, he believes translators should not be too far from original texts. For example, the translation of culturemes (expressions of culture in language)is quite complicated due to the cultural gap between Spanish and Chinese. Ciruela believes that these must always be appropriate to the specific function they perform within the text, in each specific case and moment.
43.What does the underlined phrase “that language” probably refer to?
A.Spanish. B.English. C.Chinese. D.French.
44.What caused Ciruela to translate the Chinese classic?
A.His passion for Spanish literature. B.His determination to popularize it.
C.The lack of its direct translation into Spanish. D.The loss of diversity in Spanish translation.
45.What aspect of the translation task does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Its barrier. B.Its principle. C.Its style. D.Its meaning.
46.What does Ciruela think is the most important in translation?
A.Meeting readers’ needs. B.Targeting cultural phenomena.
C.Bridging the cultural gap. D.Being loyal to the original text.
In 2018, China became the largest producer and consumer of the fruit in the world. Ninety-two-year-old Wu Mingzhu, a native of Wuhan, is the unknown hero who has helped make this possible.
“About 80 percent of the watermelons and sweet-melons served at people’s dining tables every day are the result of painful efforts made by Wu and her team over more than 60 years,” said Zhang Wenjun, a colleague of Wu’s.
Helping others had long been a dream of hers. And she thought the most beautiful thing in life is that everything you create can serve the people, so she made efforts to grow quality melons, which began paying off in 1973. She is one of the 8,000 agricultural scientists who have come to Hainan annually from across the country over the past 60 years and have cultivated (培育) more than 20,000 of China’s new seed varieties through off-season breeding.
Using innovative measures such as radiation mutation breeding, double haploid breeding and distant hybridization breeding, Wu and her team developed new germ-plasm (种质) resources, from which they cultivated more than 30 watermelon and muskmelon (香瓜) varieties with better adaptability and stronger disease resistance, said Yi Hongping, former director of the Xinjiang Muskmelon Research Center.
The new melon varieties have been promoted to more than 1.86 million hectares of fields from north to south. Some of these varieties have been promoted overseas, as far as California. Wu’s work has left her a number of honors. The “queen of melons” became an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999 and an honorary citizen of Sanya in 2004.
47.Why did Wu Mingzhu mainly want to grow high-end melons?
A.Because she wanted to make China the largest producer of melons.
B.Because China is the largest consumer of melons in the world.
C.Because she wanted to create something that could serve people.
D.Because Chinese government asked her to grow high quality melons.
48.What can we learn about from Paragraph 4?
A.Wu and her team cultivated melon varieties that could resist every disease.
B.Wu and her team cultivated high quality melons from the new germ-plasm resources.
C.Wu and her team cultivated 30 watermelon varieties from radiation mutation breeding.
D.Wu and her team cultivated melon varieties that could adapt to any circumstance.
49.Which of the following about Wu Mingzhu is NOT TRUE from the text?
A.She has cultivated more than 20,000 of China’s new seed varieties.
B.She is committed to her work and makes remarkable achievements.
C.She helps make China the largest producer of fruit in the world in 2018.
D.She is awarded a number of honorary titles due to her contributions.
50.What type is the text?
A.A diary entry. B.A book review.
C.A biography. D.A news report.
Integrity is the quality of being honest and strong about what you believe to be right. The concept of integrity has played a key role in moral philosophy throughout history and is promoted in all societies because of its importance to social relations. Individual integrity is vital to society, one that enables people to make use of their capacity for critical reflection, does not force people to take up particular roles and does not encourage individuals to betray (背叛) each other. Besides, societies can be favorable to the development of individual integrity.
Individual integrity can lift up the spirits of the entire society. It can shape the lives of people living in a particular society, the lives of all fellow people and, in its broadest sense, even the destiny (命运) of a nation. By contrast, if those living in the society are corrupt, it could have bad effects, jeopardizing the healthy morality of the society.
On the other hand, a society can be favorable to the development of individual integrity. Society expects and requires integrity. A society consisting of people of integrity, and people who never compromise on their principles, could have a positive mark on the personal development on its members. Being a part of such a morally lively community could serve as a basis for absorbing traits of good character. This could be of a distinct advantage to any individuals in the society.
Nonetheless, some social structures are of the wrong sort for some individuals to pursue integrity. If that is the case, we have to ask questions about the moral nature of society first before raising questions about individual integrity. Questions about integrity may turn out to be about what kind of society it is, rather than about the relationship between individual interests and characteristics of a society. The pursuit of adequate individual integrity often depends, not so much on understanding who one is and what one believes and is committed to, but rather understanding what one’s society is and imagining what it could be.
Under no circumstances can we underestimate the importance of human integrity in a society. People, who are honest, trustworthy, compassionate and caring, are the factors decisive in the growth of individuals as well as the development of a society.

On her blog, Debra Ferrell received the typical birthday greetings when she turned 53, but some of the messages were different. One of them told her about the Smith family who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older brother was grieving deeply. Could Ferrell offer some support?
That message and the 30 or so others like it were exactly what Ferrell was looking for. To celebrate her 53rd, the long-time social service professional had put out a call on her blog. She wanted to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she sent a wind chime (风铃) with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am near” written on it. It now hangs in the four-year old’s bedroom, where his older brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants.
This is not the first time that Ferrell has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 47th, in 2016, she founded Love in Action, an organization committed to doing something good near her home and beyond Its aim is simple: Do Your Best, Show Your Love!
Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some found via Ferrell’s blog, others with help from her grandkids. The organization also shares inexpensive and creative gift ideas for others to help people in need.
Ferrell pays for everything herself: gift cards, pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs, and care packages. Her family often gives her some extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she naturally ignores. “I got a couple of gift cards form birthday this year and was like YESSS!” It’s Ferrell’s party, and she’ll give if she wants to.

Chances are that you can name a few animals that are facing extinction. But what about plants? With some 40% of plant species under threat of extinction—and given humankind’s reliance on the plant world—one might think there’d be more urgency around protecting them. Yet in the United States, for example, plants receive less than 4% of federal funding for endangered species, despite composing 57% of the endangered species list.
Given the current state of the planet, what we desperately need is some way to engage people to care about such matters. Now a paper published by Oxford University Press might have found a way to increase awareness about plants. How? By watching nature documentaries (记录片).
For the paper, they focused on The Green Planet, the 2022 BBC plant-focused documentary, which was watched by nearly 5 million people in the United Kingdom.
To figure out if the documentary engaged viewers enough to want to learn more, the researchers looked at people’s online behavior around the time of the broadcast. The researchers noted a substantial effect of Green Planet on viewers’ awareness and interest in the portrayed plant species. Wikipedia data showed this as well. Almost a third (31.3%) of the Wikipedia pages related to plants mentioned in Green Planet showed increased visits the week after the broadcast. The investigators also note that people were more likely to do online searches for plants that enjoyed more screen time on Green Planet.
“I think that increasing public awareness of plants is essential and fascinating,” said the paper’s lead author, Joanna Kacprzyk. “In this study, we show that nature documentaries can increase plant awareness among the audience. Our results also suggest that the viewers found certain plant species particularly attractive. These plants could be used for promoting plant conservation efforts and reducing the alarming loss of plant biodiversity (生物多样性).”
62.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.60% of animal species are dying out.
B.Endangered plants are more easily neglected.
C.Endangered animals are not financially supported.
D.Human beings rely more on animals than plants.
63.What is the benefit of watching nature documentaries?
A.Changing people’s online behavior.
B.Increasing viewers’ interest in nature.
C.Investigating search preference of the public.
D.Engaging audience with plant preservation.
64.What is one factor that influenced how much people searched for certain plants online after watching The Green Planet?
A.How colorful they were. B.How rare they were.
C.How much screen time they had. D.How useful they were.
65.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Alarming Loss of Plant Biodiversity.
B.Saving Plants, Saving the Planet.
C.Nature Documentaries Promote Plant Awareness.
D.Green Planet and Endangered Species.
Consider going eastward, you will see mountains, forests and thousands of lakes, as well as wide rivers and large cities. On the 15th June I set foot off the airplane and into Calgary, Canada. I’ve never been to this side of the world before and I had some strange expectations when I could only see fields and no cityscape in view from my plane window during landing. However, as we got closer and closer to the airport the city came into view.
Phew! I sighed of relief as I’m a real city-goer. We were greeted by my girlfriend’s parents and whisked away to the main city. The large amount of greenery in Calgary’s city makes it a completely different city to visit and I advise if anybody is around this side of the world, it’s surely an interesting visit. It not only brings us good feelings, it also makes you fall in love with this city. Despite all the things we’ve done here, the thing that blew me away the most was the Canadian woodlands and mountains just a few hours outside of Calgary. The highlight for me was risking travelling to the small town of Fernie and hiking into the woods up to a small waterfall where the water was so clear we could just drink straight from the stream.
The time away from the main city had a great holiday feel and gave me time to recover after a busy university year. It’s been a great experience being in the Canadian mountains and woodlands and it taught me the importance of just having some time for yourself! So whatever you guys are doing this summer, make sure you take some time out to relax, rest and recharge. Maybe you will get a much more comfortable trip when you jump out of the busy work.
66.Which of the following best describes the author’s feeling while landing?
A.Embarrassed. B.Afraid. C.Hopeful. D.Amazed.
67.What makes Calgary a quite different city?

D.Clear water from the stream.
68.The thing that impressed the author the most was _______.
A.the Canadian people
B.the Canadian snacks

As the costs of fuel, groceries and housing increase suddenly around the world, scientists are fighting inflation (通货膨胀) at the bench. Almost all items needed to conduct science are more expensive than they were just a year ago. And that means that nearly every researcher is feeling the pressure. “Nobody is immune to this economy,” says Tola Olorunnisola, who leads innovation in the lab at Avantor, an international science-management company in Pennsylvania. Olorunnisola visited labs in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Ireland to help researchers find ways to enlarge their budgets. “Scientists are becoming more conscious of costs,” she says.
The increase in lab costs has forced scientists to make some difficult choices. Scientific budgets are pretty fixed. If they pay double for something, it means they’re not buying something else. Scientists can keep their research projects moving forward, but to avoid overspending on their budgets, they’ll probably need to adjust their buying habits and take steps to make their labs more efficient.
Julien Sage, a cancer researcher and geneticist at Stanford University in California, estimates that lab supplies historically account for roughly 20%of his overall budget, but he says that the balance is shifting.
Without significant boosts in funding to keep pace with inflation, it’s up to scientists to find creative ways to diminish costs. One option is to rethink experimental design.
“It will probably take more than discounts from lab-supply companies to truly protect scientists from the impact of rising prices,” Sage says. “Unless something is done on a large scale to either stabilize costs or increase funding, science is likely to suffer. If you have less money, you’re going to have fewer people or be less productive, which means you’re going to have fewer grants (拨款) which means you’re going to have fewer people. That’s probably happening to a lot of labs these days, and the question is: When is it going to stop?”
70.For what did Olorunnisola visit some labs in different places?
A.Seeing how researchers struggle against inflation.
B.Proving everyone has to face the rising price.
C.Learning about the pressure of researchers.
D.Helping researchers overcome economic difficulty.

A.Reduce. B.Calculate. C.Restore. D.Keep.
73.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Scientists face many problems B.The price of goods is rising quickly
C.Labs have to tighten supplies budgets D.People hold different opinions of price
