Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.
Many countries are making rules to fight against pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, and they mustn't let dirty smoke go into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and do not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight against pollution.
1.Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today because_________
A.there were many problems B.there were too many people
C.there were wars now and then D.there were no modern machines.
2.The most serious kind of pollution is________
A.noise pollution B.water pollution C.air pollution D.waste things
3.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The air. B.The city. C.The quilt. D.The smog.
4.To fight against the pollution, we must_________

Things in my life have changed over the past two decades, but one thing has remained constant: books. In times of great distress (忧虑) or sadness, books are always my answer. When I walk into my local bookstore, Bookends & Beginnings, and see all the books smiling back at me, I am no longer alone.
Though I do whatever I can to shop locally when buying books, the same cannot be said for the rest of America. According to the United States Census Bureau, the number of US bookstores has been roughly cut in half, from 12,151 in 1998 to 6, 045 in 2019. That number continues to dwindle as companies like Amazon continue to grow.
Many individuals cite (引证) Amazon’s cheaper prices as the reason for not shopping with independent bookstores. In reality, though, the price on a book jacket represents the publisher’s calculation of the reasonable cost of producing that book — from the author who writes it, the agent who represents it, the editor who works on it, the designers who create the cover, and the book-store who needs to pay their staff.
Amazon charges less because it does not depend upon the sale of books to sustain its business. It makes money through mining your data, and for many years, Amazon had agreements with investors that allowed them to sell their books at a loss because they knew they would make money other ways.
This price difference often leads to confusion at independent bookstores: why should I pay $18 for a book here when I can get it for $10 on Amazon? The reality is that buying local and supporting independent bookstores supports a pillar of one’s community, a safe, warm, and inviting place filled with endless knowledge and opportunities. That’s why you should pay the $18.
5.What do we know about the author?
A.He usually lives on his own. B.He is always in a bad mood.
C.He is greatly fond of reading books. D.He loves buying books on Amazon.

A.It sees book sales as its key business. B.It is permitted to sell books at a loss.
C.It makes its investors very disappointed. D.It wants all independent bookstores to shut down.
8.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To stop people from shopping on the Internet.
B.To explain why books at local stores cost more.
C.To explain why independent bookstores are struggling.
D.To encourage readers to support independent bookstores.
Travelers are always looking for inspiration to guide their adventures. What are the top tourist attractions in the world?
The Colosseum(罗马斗兽场), Rome
Set in the heart of the city, the Colosseum is an easy place to visit. Direct flights from around the world land in Rome daily, making it a destination you can visit on a weekend if you choose. Wander through Rome’s ancient streets, tour the Colosseum, and if time allows, plan a trip to other areas of Italy.
Machu Picchu, Peru
Much of the attraction comes from its location, high in the jungle-clad(丛林覆盖的)mountains of Peru. Set on a high plateau(高原)with green mountains, the setting is fantastic. The fact that the original builders created this amazing place in what would have been jungle, is, in itself, impressive.
Visitor numbers are now limited to a maximum per day.
The Acropolis, Athens
Situated above present day Athens, the Acropolis draws you up and in. Follow in the foot-steps of ancients as you walk up the same steps that have been walked on since 438 BCE—2,500 years.
Views out over the city are incredible as you walk between the restored ancient buildings. Near the end of the day, you’ll want to wander and watch the sunset from the stairs near the entrance. This is a nightly custom in Athens.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Wandering through Angkor Wat, the main centerpiece of the Angkor complex, it’s easy to feel like you’ve entered another era. This is without doubt, one of the most impressive sites in Southeast Asia and the main reason why many people visit Cambodia.
9.Why is it so convenient to visit the Colosseum?

Lionfish have been migrating (迁徙) south for years. They were first caught in the Gulf of Mexico, likely released from the aquarium trade, in 1985, and quickly expanded into the US East Coast and the Caribbean. They reached South American coastlines around 2010.
But the species stopped around Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago. For 10 years, freshwater flowing from the Amazon River into the Atlantic and a gathering of currents acted as geographic (地理的) barriers, stopping the fish from continuing south. But around 2020, lionfish began slip-ping under the barrier and heading south.
Now, dozens of lionfish have been spotted along 150 miles of Brazil’s coastline, according to a new study in Frontiers in Marine Science. Between March and May, when the water was clear enough to track the fish, researchers and fishers documented 72 individuals there, which suggests they have likely established new, successful populations.
Since March 2022, lionfish already managed to cover 700 kilometers of coastline, says Marcelo Soares, a marine ecologist and lead author of the new study. He also reported the number of individuals is now above 300.
For many scientists, the question wasn’t whether the fish species would continue moving south, but when. “We knew once they made it through the barrier at the Amazon, they would spread like fire,” says Osmar Luiz, an aquatic ecologist at Australia’s Charles Darwin University.
While efforts to fully get rid of lionfish may be useless, efforts to reduce their populations help limit damage to native species. Luiz says that the next important step is to track lionfish as they move and try to prevent them from establishing new populations. For the native species of Brazil, this fight is a matter of survival, Luiz says.
12.Why did lionfish appear in South American coastlines?
A.They were sent there by currents.
B.They were brought there by Americans.
C.The aquarium staff released them in South American coastlines.
D.They migrated there after being spotted in the Gulf of Mexico.
13.What once stopped lionfish from moving south?
A.Natural barriers. B.Sea pollution. C.Fishing activities. D.The aquarium trade.
14.What are scientists concerned about?
A.It’s very difficult to track them. B.Whether lionfish will continue moving.
C.It’s impossible to reduce their populations. D.The spread of lionfish will destroy local species.

The Panamanian government announced that the Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, will be listed as a national holiday in Panama from 2022. The decision will boost the country’s tourism economy, meanwhile acknowledge the contributions of Chinese-Panamanian to the country’s “ethnic diversity and multiculturalism”, noted Ivan Eskildsen, Minister of Panama Tourism Authority.
“The country is working together with the Chinese Embassy in Panama to plan the 2022 Spring Festival celebrations, which are expected to generate over $100 million in economic output,” Eskildsen said. In addition, “by holding nationwide events, Chinese in Latin America can gather in Panama and celebrate the traditional Chinese festival,” said Panama’s Minister of Culture Carlos Aguilar.
Some Chinese netizens have questioned whether the decision was made out of “real concern for the Chinese living and working in the country” or merely an attempt to boost the country’s economy. But many others looked at this decision on the brighter side, saying they believe that a “national celebration will cheer up the Chinese living in Panama, even if it is just an attempt to boost international tourism”. “I hope it can enhance a sense of belonging among local Chinese toward the traditional culture during the Spring Festival and attract Chinese from some neighboring countries to participate,” posted one netizen.
There has been a more than 100-year history of Chinese living in this Central American nation. On June 12,2017, China and Panama established diplomatic (外交的)relations. Since then, bilateral relations have developed rapidly. When it comes to the news that the Panamanian government prepares to celebrate the Chinese New Year in 2022 as an official national holiday, Chinese citizens have applauded the country’s plan.

Robert Ilijason, a 39-year-old IT specialist, once had to drive 20 minutes with his screaming baby in the backseat to an open grocery store to buy food for his hungry son. It was the late-night experience that gave Robert Ilijason the idea to open Sweden’s first unstaffed convenience store.
Now Robert Ilijason runs a 24-hour shop with no cashier. Customers use their cell phones to unlock the door and scan their purchases. All they need to do is to register for the service and download an app. They get charged for their purchases each month.
The shop has basics like milk, bread, sugar, canned food and other products that you expect to find in a small convenience store. But it doesn’t have tobacco or medical drugs because of the risk of theft. Alcohol cannot be sold in convenience stores in Sweden.
The no-service store has more advantages. Raymond Arvidsson, a friend of Ilijason’s, did his shopping in less than a minute. “No queues,” he said, smiling. “Quick in, quick out. I like.”
“My ambition is to spread this idea to other villages and small towns,” said Ilijason. “It is incredible that no one has thought of this before.” He hopes the savings of having no staff will help bring back small stores to the countryside.
But a bigger challenge has been facing some of the elderly residents in Viken. Tuve Nilsson, 75, said there were many more shops in the town when he moved here with his family in 1976. He welcomed Ilijason’s new store, saying it could be convenient for elderly people living alone. But he didn’t know how to get the hang of the technology involved.
Ilijason is considering other ways to unlock the door that wouldn’t require using an app. He’s ruled out face-recognition or fingerprint scanners, but is thinking of installing a credit card reader like some banks use. He’s also considering having one person man the store for a few hours a day to help customers who aren’t comfortable with modern technology.
26.Robert Ilijason’s late- night experience is mentioned to tell us ________.
A.why he opened the unstaffed food shop B.how to open the unstaffed food shop
C.how to look after the hungry children D.an open grocery store is very important
27.What can we know about Robert Ilijason’s first unstaffed food shop?

B.all the customers are not comfortable with modern technology
C.Ilijason will not open another kind of this no-service store
D.face-recognition will be dismissed in Ilijason’s new store
When people hear “artificial intelligence (AI)”, many think of big data. There’s a reason for that: some of the most prominent AI breakthroughs in the past decade have relied on enormous data sets. But AI is not only about large data sets, and the research in small data approaches has grown extensively over the past ten years.
If you take the top 100 biggest innovations of our time, perhaps around 60% to 65% are really based on small data. Big data is all about finding connections, but small data is all about finding the causation, that is, the reason why.
Sokkelund was bought by an experienced industry professional. The restaurant has a French cafe, in the mid-to high price-segment. At the starting point in 2009 the restaurant had 40 seats and an annual turnover of about USD 1 million. In 2017, 34 seats were added acquiring the neighboring shop and by building a small veranda (阳台). The turnover was about USD 6 million — an impressive level of grow driven by a talented team and innovative business thinking.
In the case of Sokkelund, the process of transforming the company to take advantage of small data was started with a focus on improving the traditional competitive parameters (规范;范围) of a restaurant in a structured step-by-step plan. This required managerial skills and industry experience. In terms of the effects on the business model, these changes not only led to cost reductions, but lowered customer acquisition costs, increased the number of customers retention and added new revenue (收益) channels.
30.What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Research in small data approaches has grown widely.
B.People have more research in big data.
C.Most of the innovations are based on big data.
D.AI breakthroughs have nothing to do with small data.

C.The amount of business done in a period. D.The amount of the goods bought annually.
32.Why did Sokkelund’s income grow dramatically?
A.It was mainly due to industry experience. B.Small data has been made good use of.
C.Big data was adopted to lower customer acquisition. D.It benefited from the traditional business model.
33.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To clarify some misconceptions. B.To introduce a big data approach.
C.To predict the future of AI. D.To stress the significance of small data.
The FIFA World Cup Trophy (奖杯) is arguably one of the most iconic prizes in the sporting world. So far, two different trophies have been used in the history of the FIFA World Cups.
The Jules Rimet Trophy was the first trophy awarded to the winners of the FIFA World Cups. Initially, the old trophy was originally named “Victory”. However, this trophy was renamed “the Jules Rimet Trophy” in 1946. This change was made to honor former FIFA president Jules Rimet, who voted to organize the first FIFA World Cup in 1930. French sculptor Abel Lafleur designed the trophy in 1930. The trophy was 14 inches in height and weighed 8.4 pounds. It was comprised of a winged representation of Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory and was inspired by the Nike of Samothrace statue.
Uruguay became the first champion and kept the trophy in 1930. The trophy was eventually retired when Brazil won the World Cup final for the third time in 1970. Following their success in Mexico, Brazil was allowed to keep the trophy permanently. However, the original trophy was stolen for a second time in 1983. It was never recovered, and it was claimed that it had been melted down into gold bars. Following the retirement of the Jules Rimet Trophy, FIFA needed a new cup. Eventually, Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga’s design was selected as the new World Cup trophy.
The modern FIFA World Cup trophy describes two human figures holding the earth on top of their heads. The base of the trophy has “FIFA World Cup” engraved (刻). Furthermore, following every World Cup, the name of the winning team and the winning year is also engraved at the base. The trophy weighs 13.61 pounds. Unlike the Jules Rimet Trophy, the winning nations and future winners don’t get to hold the original trophy anymore. The new regulations state that it remains in FIFA’s possession. Instead, winners are given a gold-plated bronze replica (青铜复制品) provided by FIFA.West Germany was the first nation to lift the modern World Cup trophy in 1974.
The new trophy can hold up to seventeen names and years and is likely to be retired following the 2038 World Cup.
34.Why was the first World Cup trophy renamed?
A.To remember the designer of the cup. B.To welcome a new global soccer event.
C.To expand the popularity of the World Cup. D.To show great respect for the former FIFA president.
35.Which country has won the Jules Rimet Trophy three times?
A.Italy. B.Mexico. C.Brazil. D.Uruguay.

C.It bears the word “Victory” at the bottom. D.It varies the design every seventeen years.
37.What is the text mainly about?
A.The rules of the World Cup. B.The history of the World Cup trophy.
C.The growing trend of watching the World Cup. D.The inspiration for creating the World Cup trophy.

A seemingly small gesture (姿势) at a restaurant outside Houston that wasn’t part of the job description for a Waffle House waitress has now had a big effect on her life.
It happened last weekend, when 18-year-old Evoni Williams was serving an elderly man breakfast. He needed help. So Williams leaned over the table with a fork and a knife and cut up his ham for him. It might have ended there, but a customer named Laura Wolf was struck enough to take a picture and post it online.
“I didn’t know the photo was taken until a couple of hours later,” Williams told the Houston Chronicle. “When I saw it, it’s just something I would do for anybody. I was so busy in here, and I actually took the time to stop and hear what he had to say instead of walking past him.”
It clearly meant something to others too. As of Sunday, more than 130, 000 people had reacted to the post and nearly 7, 000 have shared it. But the story has extended beyond the Internet. Williams, a recent Texas City High School graduate, was honored at a ceremony, Thursday, with a $16, 000 scholarship to Texas Southern University. Williams has reportedly been working full-time at the Waffle House to earn money toward school. Texas Southern University has assigned a counselor (顾问) to help her begin her degree and she is planning to study business management.
Media (媒体) at the local, national and international level have all picked up on the story. It is a moment among several in recent years, captured in a picture, put online, and capturing the attention of the Internet: like a New York City police officer giving a homeless man a pair of boots, or a restaurant goer whose wife died of cancer anonymously (匿名地) paying for the meal of another cancer patient.

Every morning I walk outside and bring in the morning newspaper. There was a time when every house on both sides of the street had a newspaper in the driveway. There was also a time when every house had a landline telephone, but not anymore. Not for a long time.
My husband is less willing to accept the downward trend of print-edition newspapers, as he has worked in newspapers since the age of 16. Even before that, he was what you would call an “independent publisher”.
Recently, we were in a Chicago park with our grandchildren. My husband had a newspaper folded under his arm. He sat down and put the paper on the bench beside him. A young girl walked over, looked at the newspaper, picked it up and asked, “What’s this?”
I thought he was going to fall over. The colour faded from his face. His eyes rolled back in his head and his legs were giving out. I rolled up his paper and waved it under his nose. The smells from the ink woke him up.
Some people simply love paper—the feel, the portability, and the pleasure of piling them higher and higher until their wife cries, “Enough!” My husband was happy when he spent time with our youngest daughter and her husband. When they lived with us, they raced to pull the crossword puzzle from the paper every day. It’s hard to do a crossword online. Pencil doesn’t come off a computer screen as easily as you might think.
Now my husband will be very excited that I have found further proof that there may still be hope for the survival of print. I was chatting with a young mother who subscribes to the daily newspaper. I asked why she did something so conservatively. She looked shocked. “Because it’s print!” she said. “I love print! When the paper didn’t come one day, would you believe I called the main number to let them know and the lady said, ‘Why don’t you just subscribe to the online version?’” She shook her head in disbelief.
My husband will be so thrilled that he might write this young woman into his will. I say we leave her all our piles of old newspapers.

D.Printed newspapers will be replaced by online newspapers.
52.What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?
A.The new rise of digital newspapers online.
B.A man’s everlasting love for printed newspapers.
C.The pleasure of looking through daily newspapers.
D.A family’s memory of reading printed newspapers.
53.How did the author’s husband feel when a girl asked a question in the park?

A 71-year-old Swedish man “can’t put into words” how thankful he is for the new technology that quickly flew him into the small category of only ten percent of people who survive sudden heart stopping.
The man now has made a full recovery and returned home, after the speedy delivery of a defibrillator(除颤器)—via autonomous drone(无人驾驶飞机). The company behind the drone pilot project says it’s the first time in medical history, a drone has played an important part in saving a life during a heart stopping.
He was in his driveway when the attack happened. Normally, you have about ten minutes to get help in such a situation. Luckily, a telephone call was immediately placed requesting emergency services and he lived in a region that had partnered with Everdrone’s innovative life-saving programme called EMADE (Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery service). EMADE drones delivered a defibrillator to the scene—and the amount of time from the alarm(警报) until the defibrillator was safely delivered at the doorstep of the incident address was just over three minutes.
Even luckier, a doctor happened to be driving by and stopped to see if he could help. “I was on my way to work at the local hospital when I saw a man collapsed in his driveway and I immediately rushed to help,” says Dr. Mustafa Ali. After the ambulance arrived, the patient was rushed to the hospital.
The man said, “If it wasn’t for the drone I probably wouldn’t be here.”
275,000 patients in Europe and 350,000 in the US, suffer from heart stopping annually. About 70% of heart stopping occur in private homes without defibrillators on site. The chance of survival decreases by 7%—10% with each minute following the collapse(突然倒下)—and as a result, the current survival rate among heart stopping patients is merely 10%.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s house. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you” - two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.

Aesha Ash spent most of her life on ballet dancing and even turned it into a career as a member of the New York City Ballet. Much as she loved to dance, she found the weight of her responsibility heavy because she was often the only African American ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) in her classes and company.
After retiring(退休) from ballet in 2007, Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for more than ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet.
Aesha set up a one-week camp that invited kids to not only learn the basics of ballet, but also get an introduction to French (since she says it is “the language of ballet”).
Her first camp was in 2018 in a poor neighborhood in New York. When she arrived she was greeted by dozens of students, most of whom were African Americans. On the final day of camp, after a week of learning, the students put on a final performance (表演) for their family and friends. Before the performance, Aesha said she was nervous because the campers were all between 8 and 11 years old. Much to her surprise, it turned out to be perfect.
Aesha continues to do whatever she can to help kids learn ballet. She found a way to turn unbearable weight she once carried into something good for kids, as well as for the world of ballet.

Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.
Opposite to what many people believe, if you don’t eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

A.no breakfast at all B.very rich breakfast
C.different breakfast or none D.little food for breakfast
71.The results of the test show that .

72.The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don’t eat breakfast, you will .
A.lose weight B.not lose weight
C.be healthier D.gain a lot of weight
73.Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

B.Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.
C.Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight losing.
D.Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight
Jay Hewitt completed the Ironman race in under 14 hours despite having gone through 2 brain surgeries and a year of chemo (化疗). His inspiration? His 7-year-old daughter named Hero. Hewitt, 39, said he first saw an Ironman race on TV in 1989 and recalled thinking to himself “they must be superhuman”. It never crossed his mind that he could do something like that.

When he came around the corner to the finish line, there were hundreds of people there cheering him on.
Hewitt said seeing his daughter made everything worth it. I didn’t have much energy, but I gave my wife a kiss, handed my wife and daughter flowers and got down on my knees to say to Hero. “If I can do it, you can do it. Dream big and never give up hope.” “I got to tell her that it was really hard for me but I had thought about coming home to her, and that she had given me the strength to finish.”

77.Where was Hewitt’s strength for the race mainly from?
