It was 1954 when a young traveler named Robert Beach was hitching rides on his way from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles, California. His ride broke down on one cold night in Deming. Beach remembered being tired, hungry, and cold. With no money in his pocket, he wondered where he might spend the night. Police officers approached Beach who was standing downtown and he begged them to take him to prison just so he could be warm. The officers of course refused his request as he had not done anything wrong. Beach found a business doorway and settled in for the night.
When morning came, an Asian man walked out of the building and asked him how he might help and then handed him a bag of donuts, Beach recalled. Those were likely the best donuts he had ever tasted. Then reaching out to his family, he returned home immediately.
Now, sixty-seven years later, Beach got in touch with the Deming-Luna Chamber of Commerce and told his story about his brief sojourn in Deming to the new Executive Director Debbie Troyer Trover posted Beach’s story on the Chamber of Commerce and Community Facebook page where several people thought Beach might be referring to the Bowman’s Bakery on Pine Street. The community continued its search while the workers continued to look through old phone directories(电话簿). Finally, they decided they had come to a dead end.
After 50 years serving as a judge and entering retirement, Beach wanted to say thank-you to the community of Deming by sending a $1,000 check to a local homeless shelter. Margaret Fairman of Silver Linings Thrift Store and Camp Silver for the homeless rang up Beach and later the generous check he promised—a check representing the kindness of Deming—was delivered to Fairman in early February. “The Chamber would like to thank Judge Robert Beach for bringing Deming together in their search for the mysterious baker,” Troyer said. “We will let you think about the owner of this generous bakery from the past and perhaps this story will find some answers.”

A report lasting almost three decades showed that transportation—flying, driving, rail, commercial shipping, etc.—is responsible for a larger share of domestic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (排放) than any other economic sector. Though passenger cars currently account for the largest portion of transportation-related GHG emissions, air travel is one of the fastest-growing polluters. In 2018, aircraft were responsible for 9% of U.S transportaton sector GHG emissions and 2.4% of total carbon dioxide emissions globally.
The carbon dioxide emitted from one round-trip flight from New York to London totals about 1,259 pounds per passenger, according to ICAO’ s Carbon Emissions Calculator—that’s more than what the average citizen of Kenya (and more than 30 other countries)emits over a full year.
Planes also leave behind those ice trails (痕迹)—called contrail clouds—which are even more polluting than the CO2 they produce. The word “contrails” is a mix of “condensation” and “trails”. They occur when waste gases mix with low-temperature, high-humidity (湿度) air. Contrails are harmful not just because they block sunlight, but also because they trap heat coming up from the ground, finally creating a warming effect below.
Today, alternative fuels that are similar in chemistry to traditional fossil jet fuel, but made from waste and raw materials instead, are becoming more commonplace. San Francisco International Airport has already started delivering sustainable aviation (航空) fuel through a pipeline; American, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines are some of the industry players that have committed to using it.
New research suggests that because contrail louds form only in very low temperatures, reducing the altitude of fights even slightly could dramatically minimize contrail climate forcing. One study found that just 2% of flights in Japan’s airspace were responsible for 80% of that space’s radiative forcing. The same study estimated that if even 1.7% of flights reduced their altitude by 2,000 feet—which is a normal amount of variation from the flight path anyway—the climate impact of contrails could be cut by 59%.
5.What can we learn about air travel in America from paragraph 1?

8.What does the new research expect airplanes to do to reduce the harm of the contrails?
A.Change their flight paths. B.Reduce some flight distance.
C.Develop alternative fuels. D.Fly at a slightly lower altitude.
Whether you’re an early-bird or a night-owl, getting regular exercise is still generally a good idea at some point in your schedule. It turns out, however, that when you do your workout may affect your body differently. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and the University of California, Irvine discovered these significant differences by placing nice on a treadmill (跑步机) at various times of day. Mice are animals active at night so then biological rhythm (生物节律) runs in the opposite direction from humans. Their morning starts when it gets dark and their night starts when it gets light. “There appear to be rather significant differences between the effect of exercise performed in the morning and evening, and these difference are probably controlled by the body’s biological clock,” says co-author Jonas Thue Treebak, an associate professor from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, in a release.
The authors found that when mice are on a morning exercise schedule, the cells in their muscles are able to process fat and sugar better. That being sad, they also noted that running on the treadmill in the evening causes mice to use more energy (burn more calories) for longer periods of time. “Morning exercise starts gene programs in the muscle cells, making them more effective and better able to metabolize (代谢) sugar and fat. Evening exercise, on the other hand, increases whole body energy consumption for an extended period of time,” says Treebak.
These findings are especially interesting to the research team because they seem to indicate the time of day when people with severe overweight or type-2 diabetes might be able to maximize the exercise gains. Still, these differing effects make it difficult for the researchers to determine when is better in general to exercise.
“At this point, we can only conclude that the effects of the two appear to differ, and we certainly have to do more work to determine the potential mechanisms (机制) for the beneficial effects of exercise training performed at these two time-points,” says Treebak.

B.They can provide a new way to treat some patients.
C.They may instruct some patients to recover from injures.
D.They may show the best time to cure people of type-2 diabetes.
12.What will the researchers do next?

My only child Sam was just 9 when my editor called to offer a popular column spot in our local daily newspaper. “Write about things that typical suburban families can relate to,” said the editor, who couldn’t see me doing the happy dance in my kitchen while we finalized the details over the phone.
At the time, blogging was just a pipe dream. I’d already published articles and personal essays in several national magazines — but my byline (署名) was hardly a household name. A weekly column would change that, at least locally. Before long, I had established a faithful Sunday readership, including a group of admiring fans who would stop to chat at the post office or the supermarket.
“If you’re going to write about me, you had better get it right or don’t publish it,” My son, in grade school at the time, exploded after I wrote about the time I discovered a soda pop can under his bed. The column, which had unkindly trashed the housekeeping habits of little boys, described how I felt when I discovered that one of the pop cans hosted a colony of honeybees. For entertainment value, I’d stretched the facts a bit, implying that my son was keeping the bees as pets.
“I wish you’d quit writing about me,” he shouted, fighting tears as he ran upstairs. “I don’t want to ruin your job, but that’s just how I feel!” He knew he had posed a serious dilemma. The faithful readership had made it clear that the “kid columns” were my best stuff, and they wanted more.
From the start, I avoided hot-button topics (热点话题) in favor of tender family life. I published what most journalists would consider safe or soft material, knowing full well that my son had to face the challenge at school while I hid behind a desk at home.
And so, after our tearful talk, I agreed to a temporary ban on the kid columns. After years of teaching my son the importance of respecting boundaries, I’d finally learned to respect his.
13.Why did the writer feel glad for a weekly column?
A.She could write blogging on the life styles.
B.She might earn more money to support kids.
C.She could become well known for her writing.
D.She achieved her dream of a journalist career.

D.made up some facts to attract readers
15.According to the text, the writer’s columns ________.
A.won a lot of faithful readers B.included hot topics of kids
C.recorded her son’s life in details D.encouraged Sam to face life bravely
16.What lesson did the writer learn from her writing columns?
A.The best stories must be shared early.
B.We should respect the boundaries of others.
C.The writing on a childhood should be exact.
D.Soft materials were needed for a kid column.

Cabbage is a good source of Vitamin C and other nutrients. Cato the Elder, a famous Roman thinker 2,000 years ago, praised its medical value. If you eat it raw, he suggested dipping it in vinegar.
Think about growing head cabbage if you live where the weather is cool and the soil is moist and fertile. Spring and fall are good times to begin. Cabbage does not need full sun and grows easily if you water it regularly and protect against insects and disease.
Cabbage takes about 60 to 90 days to grow. The amount of space needed between the plants depends on how big you expect the heads to be. Cabbage can be picked any time after the heads have formed.
Always keep the plants moist, so you need to water it regularly. Watch for yellowing or black spots on the stems. Yellow or brown areas shaped like the letter V on leaves may be a sign of black rot infection. Insects, transplants and seeds can spread infections.
On March 17th, many Irish Americans will eat a traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. Cabbage leaves can be steamed or cooked in a small amount of boiling water until soften. Cabbage smells terrible if you cook it too long. Uncooked cabbage, cut thinly, is used in coleslaw (卷心菜沙拉) and many other salads.Sauerkraut is cabbage fermented (发酵) in its own juice. It means “sour cabbage” in German. Salt is traditionally used to pull water out of the cabbage. And Chinese cabbage is popular not just in China. The effects of advertising often work in tricky (狡猾的) ways. Many people don’t even realize they are being marketed to when they change their behaviour after encountering advertisements. Since advertising is a powerful psychological tool, an entire field of study, which is devoted to unlocking how advertising influences consumer behaviour, has been developed.
Another effect of advertising is educating consumers about specific products or services. This can be part of the persuasion written in an ad. In an advertisement, a company can influence possible buyers by showing how the product works and how it can solve the problems they face or at least ease those problems. For example, a dog owner who previously thought there was no solution to his dog’s anxiety can learn through a dog vest (背心) ad that there actually is a solution, and that solution is the gentle pressure provided by the vest.
Advertisements generally use similar language. Many advertisements are designed to make the viewers take immediate action. Words and phrases often used in such ads include “Buy now!” “Get started!” and “Try now!”. Specifically, the part of an ad that pushes for immediate action is called “call to action”, which is important to any ad because it drives the viewers or listeners to take action. Besides, companies usually use persuasive language in the rest of the advertisement. This can be a recommendation from a previous buyer, a chart showing the product’s benefits, or a list of the product’s benefits.
Advertising is part of marketing. Although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably (可替换地), they aren’t the same thing. Marketing is the broad process of researching consumers’ needs, collecting and evaluating data related to those needs and developing various strategies for attracting consumers. Advertising, on the other hand, strictly refers to the process of attracting potential customers to make a sale.
24.What’s the effect of advertising on consumers?
A.Asking people to buy the product or service directly.
B.Educating consumers about specific products or services.
C.Having children as advertising targets.
D.Pretending to have good sales of a product.
25.What does the author want to show by telling the story about the dog owner?
A.Consumers are affected by advertisements offering solutions to their problems.
B.Consumers learn about products for pets from advertisements.
C.Consumers’ needs can be satisfied by companies devoted to advertising.
D.Consumers’ problems are the inspiration for advertisers.
26.What does the author focus on in the last paragraph?
A.The importance of advertising.
B.The process of advertising.
C.The effect of marketing and advertising.
D.The relationship between advertising and marketing.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.What are the advantages of advertising? B.What are people’s attitudes towards advertising?
C.How does advertising affect people? D.How does marketing differ from advertising?

When I was 24, I had a good and well-paid job. However, I learned about the limitation of the position I was in. Therefore, I decided to change my situation to make myself more employable, develop a wider range of skills and finish a bachelor’s degree.
I decided to get a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) as I had a passion for science. Besides, I enjoyed quick and critical thinking, and needed a worthwhile career. I started a BSN at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in January 2007 with the intention of specialising in Emergency.
Throughout my education years, I worked about 30 hours per week sometimes even more, just to make a living. My parents supported my decisions but they lacked the financial resources to help me. Apart from government loans (贷款), scholarships and my own income from work, I had no other sources of financial support. Scholarships helped me a lot when it came to paying my tuition.
I am happy to say that I graduated with a BSN in May three years later. Thanks to the Employed Student Nurse program, I found a good job easily and worked full-time in Emergency at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Shortly after being hired, I was sponsored (资助) by Fraser Health to continue my studies and finally I completed my Emergency Nursing Specialty certificate (文凭) as well as other various certifications connected with emergency nursing. With a BSN from Canada, I also challenged the American NCLEXRN (美国注册护士). I am now employed full-time in a hospital that I love and I plan to devote the rest of my life to it.
I am happy that l chose to return to school to continue my education.

The population of a sea creature known as the sunflower sea star, which was once plentiful along the Pacific coastline from Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula to Alaska, has been reduced sharply these years. About 90% of them have disappeared since 2013 because of a mysterious sea star wasting
One of the factors which is likely to have led to the death of sea stars is rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change, according to some scientists. The ocean absorbs most of the heat caused by greenhouse gas emissions, which has the effect of increasing the temperature of the water. Many sea creatures can only tolerate very small changes to their environment.
Sunflower sea stars feed on sea urchins(海胆). Sea urchins feed on seagrass. Without the existence of sunflower sea stars, their key predator in the food chain, sea urchin populations have boomed. That has led to the death of many sea grasses—which in turn contributes to the climate crisis, as seagrass is a valuable tool to store carbon dioxide.
Scientists at the University of Washington have been working on that. At their laboratory on San Juan Island, they have been cultivating a new generation of sunflower sea stars that can be used to repopulate coastal waters. Jason Hodin, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs, said that they’re hoping the program can help in the process of recovery of the sunflower sea star and, at last, recovery of the health of ecosystems like seagrass that is under threat right now.
To test the sea stars’ capacity to tolerate warming seas, scientists make these tiny creatures experience fluctuations(波动) in water temperatures in the lab. Some of the young adult sea stars are being raised in water that is slightly warmer than normal, and are showing signs of being able to cope with the added warmth. “These are not typical ocean temperatures around here, but the success indicates that they at least have the ability to endure the warmer water,” said Hodin.

A.Habitat loss. B.Ocean pollution.
C.Climate change. D.Food shortage.
36.What does the underlined word “predator” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

37.How do scientists help increase the population of sunflower sea stars?
A.By developing machines to cool sea water.
B.By improving the environment of coastal waters.
C.By growing plentiful seagrass to absorb carbon dioxide.
D.By experimenting on raising a new generation of the creature.
38.What’s Jason Hodin’s attitude towards the program?
A.supportive B.critical C.indifferent D.doubtful
David Sexton was called to a whale sighting a few hundred meters down when he was walking along the Assateague Island shoreline last February.
The 30-ton,15-year-old, female humpback whale (座头鲸) wasn’t in the ocean. The whale was lying dead on the beach, blocked by a caution tape. Sexton said he went home to find out what could have caused the death of the whale “Pivot”, often seen in the Gulf of Maine. He wasn’t able to find a reason for the whale’s death.
Pivot has been one of the 26 humpback whale strandings (搁浅) from Maine to Florida since last January according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Whale strandings occur when a whale is found dead on a shoreline, or alive, but unable to return to the water. The species typically lives up to 90 years, weighs 40 tons, and grows to an average of 60 feet in length.
Pivot’s cause of death is still unknown, but NOAA believes that vessel strikes, entanglement (缠住) in fishing equipment and changing water temperatures are the biggest threats to the species.
The United States announced that humpback whales were an endangered species for the first time in 1970, under the “Endangered Species Conservation Act”. Since then, the humpback whale population has grown from 15,000 to nearly 85,000. Moreover, the species is likely to benefit from climate change effects like warming waters, because the fish they eat become more plentiful in warm water.
“We have seen an increase in humpback whale strandings throughout the region along with significant population growth,” said Mendy Garron, a member of the rescue team for NOAA.“We request that if you see an animal in trouble or on the beach, call your local stranding organization,” Garron said. “We do want to encourage people to report those sightings of animals and of strandings to those locally trained rescue teams.”
39.What happened to Pivot?
A.It lost its way. B.It was found dead.
C.It missed a call. D.It was overweight.
40.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A.Add some background information. B.Offer some tips on whale-watching.
C.Introduce the whale’s natural habitat. D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
41.Why has the humpback whale population grown fast since 1970?
A.They stay away from humans. B.They are able to avoid boat traffic.
C.They are subject to legal protection. D.They can get more food in cold water.

A.Keeping still on the beach. B.Contacting the local reporters.
C.Sharing those sightings online. D.Turning to rescue teams for help.
A college degree is helpful for many practical reasons, ranging from your increased competitiveness to the increased likeliness that you’ll be promoted within your job. However, people think little of the degree of personal growth that they’ll experience as they’re working through their degrees. A college education requires students to overcome all types of difficulties and prepares themselves not only for the workplace, but for dealing with many of life’s challenges.
Time management and organization, for example, are just two examples of the skills that you’re likely to get the hang of during your time in college. Both are needed to successfully deal with the many courses you will take and the tasks before you. Tests, exams, and home-work dates can all become confusing when you’re dealing with multiple classes. Good organization can help you manage all of your responsibilities, and it’s a skill that will be useful once you have your degree. Not only is it useful in the workplace, but it can help you manage your personal responsibilities at home as well. Even simple tasks like bill payments are made easier when you can properly track what is due and when.
Of course, on a larger level, the sort of personal development you’ll experience will large-ly be related to overcoming difficulties. College requires that you overcome one challenge after another, ranging from learning courses to passing tests or completing projects. You’ll need to be not only intelligent but disciplined in order to complete your schooling. These traits(特质)are often developed slowly throughout college. As you learn how to better respond to stress and difficulties, you’ll slowly find that you’re better able to deal with difficulties in a number of situations.
43.What benefit is ignored about working through a college degree?
A.More job opportunities. B.More chances of promotion.
C.Stronger competitiveness. D.Greater personal growth.
44.What does the underlined phrase“get the hang of”in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Track down. B.Pick up.
C.Hang out. D.Get off.
45.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Earning a degree is a must to gain personal development.
B.Personal growth can only be acquired by earning a degree.
C.College life is accompanied with challenges and difficulties.
D.Traits of intelligence and discipline are developed fast in college.
46.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Benefits of Earning a College Degree
B.Practical Ways to Achieve a College Degree
C.Reasons Why You Need to Earn a College Degree
D.Earning a College Degree Helps with Personal Growth
I applied to be a first-grade teacher’s assistant. The job paid the lowest wage, and I could hardly afford to pay my rent. I had no desire to go into education, so I didn’t know why I was attracted to this position. Working with children was not my motivation at that time. But later I found that it was all I wanted to do.
There was a student, Ashley, in my class who was very creative and interested in writ-ing. I helped Ashley write her first short story. Last August, the 900-year-old Wan’an Bridge in Pingnan County, a locality of Ningde City in the coastal Fujian province, was destroyed when it suddenly caught fire.
Wan’an, a national-level protected building, was a wooden arch corridor bridge (木拱廊桥),which for centuries was an ancient architectural calling card for the region. The bridge,98.2 meters long and 4.7 meters wide, was first built in the Song dynasty (960~1279), and was the longest wooden arch corridor bridge left standing in China. Few, however, had imagined that such an ancient bridge would attract public attention in such a way.
Amid the powerful voice of the local population for new wooden arch bridges, the traditional techniques behind the building work have well and truly been revived (唤醒), but the protection of the ancient buildings still has much room for improvement.
Currently, China’s approach to the protection of national heritage sites puts protecting and rescuing endangered buildings before all else, but to keep these ancient buildings alive, preventive protection is key.
“Technically, restoring (修复) Wan’an isn’t very difficult,” said Li, Deputy County Mayor of Pingnan. “Along with the help of the local inheritors of the national intangible cultural heritage, the bridge’s restoration looks hopeful. However, the historical value will definitely be affected.”
Meanwhile, Zhan, the former Deputy Dean at the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, pointed out the recent destruction of Wan’an Bridge highlights a serious shortage of warning mechanisms and preventative protection measures, which currently are supposed to be the most important part of protection. “Significant improvements have been made in the past few years in protection, but we still have a long way to go on proper planning for protection work. How to protect cultural heritage is a matter that we need to discuss as soon as possible,” he added.

A new checkout trend (趋势) is sweeping across America, making for an increasingly awkward experience: digital tip jars.
You order a coffee, an ice cream, a salad or a slice of pizza and pay with your credit card or phone. Then, a worker standing behind the counter turns a touch screen and slides it in front of you. The screen has a few suggested tip amounts — usually 10%, 15% or 20%. The worker is directly across from you. Other customers are standing behind, waiting impatiently and looking over your shoulder to see how much you tip. And you must make a decision in seconds.
Customers and workers today are faced with a completely different tipping culture compared to just a few years ago — without any clear norms. Although consumers are used to tipping waiters and other service workers, tipping a cashier may be a new phenomenon for many shoppers. It’s being driven in large part by changes in technology that have enabled business owners to more easily shift (转移) the costs of compensating (补偿) workers directly to customers.
In addition, customers were encouraged to tip generously during the past two years to help keep restaurants and stores running, raising expectations. Total tips for full-service restaurants were up 25% during the latest quarter compared to a year ago, while tips at quick-service restaurants were up 17%, according to data from Square.
The shift to digital payments also sped up, leading stores to replace dated cash tip jars with tablet touch screens. But these screens and the procedures for digital tipping have proven more intrusive than a low-pressure cash tip jar with a few dollars in it. Some people walk away from the screen on purpose without doing anything to avoid making a decision.
55.What mainly drove tipping a cashier?
A.Improved service. B.Customers’ request.
C.Advances in technology. D.An increase in living costs.
56.Why were customers encouraged to tip in the past two years?
A.To increase sales worldwide. B.To attract skilled workers.
C.To meet their personal needs. D.To make businesses survive.
57.What does the underlined word “intrusive” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Annoying. B.Convenient. C.Generous. D.Orderly.
58.What is the text mainly about?
A.Well-paid jobs in America. B.A problem about digital payment.
C.The changes in food choice. D.A rising trend of tipping in the US.

We have been taught from a young age that red means stop and green means go. So why were these colors chosen for traffic lights? And what’s the history behind the colors?
To trace the connection between the colors and traffic lights,we have to travel back in time to the earliest railroad signals (信号灯) developed in the 1830s. Those first railroad signals were the forerunner of our modern stoplights. Like modern traffic controls, they contained three lights:one for stop, one for caution (警告),and one for go. The original color system was different from our modern system, though. Red meant stop, green meant caution, and white meant go.
The choice of red for stop was fairly obvious, since red — the color of blood — has been associated with danger for thousands of years, long before cars were even around. Scientifically speaking, red is the color with the longest wavelength which means that as it travels,it gets spread less in different directions than other colors,so it can be seen from a greater distance.
Why green and white were chosen for the other signals remains a bit of a mystery. It’s possible that the two colors were chosen because how they contrasted (反差) with red. This system of color-coded signals remained in place (仍然有效) for several decades until it became clear that using white for go could cause serious problems. Around 1914,a train signal’s red lights broke down, causing it to appear white. As a train approached the signal,it was supposed to stop, but the driver believed the white meant go. The result was a terrible train crash. After that, the color for go was eventually changed to green.
To provide the most contrast between red and green, yellow was then chosen as the new color for caution, because it can be seen well at all times of the day. After cars were invented and went into mass production,a similar signaling system was needed to control the flow of traffic. When traffic lights were put up,it became standard for them as well.
62.How does the author describe the original traffic lights?
A.By listing an example. B.By offering a suggestion.
C.By making a comparison. D.By showing the importance.

D.It has proved the least harmless to our eyes.
64.What caused the accident in paragraph 4?
A.The driver’s tiredness. B.The train’s high speed.

65.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.How did the present traffic lights form?
B.Why was the first traffic system invented?
C.Why did white disappear from the traffic lights?
D.How did an accident change the traffic systems?
A seven-word sentence was discovered on a 3,700-year-old comb (梳子),which is likely the oldest known sentence written in letters, according to a new study. The sentence is in Canaanite (迦南语),which is the source (来源) of later letter systems in European languages.
The comb was first discovered in 2016 in Israeli. However,it wasn’t until 2021 that a researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem first noticed the words when checking the photo of the comb. The researchers were not able to directly date the comb. They believed it dated from around 1700 BC based on comparison of the letters with those on pottery (陶器) with a known age.
Garfinkel,a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said,“The Canaanites invented the letters. Nowadays every person in the world can read and write using the letter system. This is really one of the most important achievements of humankind. When you are writing in English, you’re really using Canaanite.”
Small groups of Canaanite letters discovered on broken pieces of pottery before did not leave much room for further research on the lives of the Canaanites. But this find of a sentence written in the first letter-based language opens up the debate about the history during the ancient time period.
Garfinkel said,“The sentence was found on an ivory comb in the ancient city’s palace and temple area, which could suggest that only wealthy men were able to read and write.” The earliest writing system started around 5,000 years ago, which relied on hundreds of pictographs (象形文字) to represent words, ideas and sounds. Canaanites were the first to use letters in their writing system. “It shows that even in the most ancient times there were full sentences, which further suggests that Canaanites stood out among the early civilizations in their use of the written word.”
66.What do we know about Canaanite?
A.It has a history of 3,700 years. B.It is the oldest known language.
C.Its sentences are in many languages. D.Its letters are still in use at present.
67.How was the complete sentence in Canaanite found?
A.It was discovered on some pottery. B.It was identified on a comb in 2016.
C.It was recognized when dating the comb. D.It was recognized on a photo of the comb.
68.What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A.The influence of Canaanite letters.
B.The rules of using Canaanite letters.
C.The problem in identifying the Canaanite sentence.
D.The explanation of the discovered Canaanite sentence.
69.What does Garfinkel think of the new discovery in the last paragraph?
A.Useless. B.Meaningful. C.Confusing. D.Unacceptable.
Mack Rutherford, born on June 21, 2005, has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone in a small plane after taking off on March 23, 2022. Five months later, he touched down in the Bulgaria (保加利亚),where his journey began, according to Rutherford’s website. He turned 17 years old during the trip.
Rutherford’s route extended 52 countries on a specially prepared plane, according to his website. His journey was tracked on his website, which showed he set off for the Mediterranean (地中海) then through the Sahara, onwards through the Middle East and then East Asia. He broke two world records, previously held by his older sister Zara Rutherford, as the youngest person to fly around the world alone and also the youngest person to do so in such a small plane. He entered his last leg through the United States, Canada and Mexico before flying back through Europe.
The teenager was just 15 years old when he received his first pilot’s license (许可证), becoming the youngest pilot in the world. “Having flown hundreds of hours with my dad, who is a professional pilot, I have known for certain I wanted to fly. I think there’s something I can actually try to struggle for and achieve,” he said. “I also want to use the opportunity to meet young people on my route who do amazing things or make a difference to their communities or even to the world,” he wrote before flying off.
There were several “hairy” moments during his journey, he said, but he never gave up. His journey even took him to a deserted island in the North Pacific after strong head winds forced him to land during a flight from Japan to the United States. “I was forced to face it on my own — but that was definitely an amazing experience,” he said.

Hounslow Urban Farm
Built over twenty years ago, the farm is a great place to take young children to get close to the animals. Cows, pigs, sheep and rabbits are among the residents on the farm, which is open throughout the week. There are fun activities every day, such as hunting, and horse riding. What we may not know is that the animals here can be adopted (领养).
Twickenham Stadium
This is the ground where the 2015 Rugby World Cup Final was played. Built in 1908, Twickenham Stadium is also the place for England to test its international team and the Six Nations. On non-match days, many people visit Twickenham Stadium to explore the World Rugby Museum inside. As well as being used for sporting events, many singers have held concerts here.
Legoland Windsor
Built in 1996 as a family theme park, the park is themed around the popular Lego (乐高) toy system. The park holds tiny views of famous British landmarks, including Big Ben, the London Eye, the Guildhall and the River Thames, all built with Lego blocks, making it Britain’s one of the most popular theme parks. Given the pricey admission, this is typically a good choice for those who are financially prepared.
