Setting boundaries communicates what you are willing to do, allowing you to make your own decisions. Here are some steps for setting healthy boundaries.
1
For some of us, we may not even know that a boundary has been crossed or a limit overstepped until after the fact. The first step to setting boundaries is to identify what your limits are. Some useful questions you can ask yourself include: Where am I overextending myself in my life? What areas of my life make me tired? What is causing me unnecessary stress?
The key to identifying your limits and boundaries is to listen to your first reaction. 2 .
Clearly communicate your boundaries
The next step to establishing healthy boundaries is to communicate them to others. 3 . If you’re not used to setting clear boundaries, it may feel uncomfortable or even rude for you to start doing so. However, finding a direct and kind way to strongly communicate your needs is key to maintaining your boundaries.
Practice what you want to say
Practicing what you want to say will increase your chances of successfully setting a boundary. 4 . Practice making your voice heard and sharing your thoughts.
Avoid over-apologizing or over-explaining
In an effort to be polite and avoid seeming rude, some people can fall into a tendency to apologize or explain the reason why they’re setting a limit. 5 .

Why Are Family Traditions Important?
Family traditions vary in how they’re celebrated, but they are all of great significance. Let’s explore the importance of family traditions in today’s fast-paced world.
They give a reason for the family to get together.
6 That being said, sticking to a date is often necessary to coordinate (协调) everyone’s jam-packed schedules. 7 You are much less likely to cancel a time-honored family tradition than a casual lunch. Family traditions give family members something to look forward to and bring them together.
They promote a healthy work-life balance.
Nowadays, remote work has been a way of life for millions of people. While telecommuting(远程办公) has its benefits, it can also make it difficult to achieve a work-life balance. Since the workplace is where you spend the majority of your time, you’re likely to separate yourself from the rest of the world. 8
They create good family dynamics.
Many family members lead vastly different lifestyles. 9 Even if you all have different interests and opinions, you can bond over your shared family experience.
Celebrating family traditions develops relationships between family members. This connection is priceless and fosters(培养) positive family dynamics.
10
Family traditions foster a family identity that gives each member a sense of belonging and personal pride. A sense of belonging to family and community is essential for social and emotional well-being.

Do you sometimes wish there was a quick and easy way to do your homework? Well a new artificial intelligence technology has been released and people are concerned that it could lead to students cheating on their work.
ChatGPT is an online service which can not only answer questions but also write realistic school essays just like humans. 11 .
But what exactly is ChatGPT and how could it affect the future of homework? ChatGPT was released late last year by company OpenAI, which was founded by Elon Musk. 12 , answering questions from the user. The online chatbot has been trained on lots of information and data from the internet - it can have a human-like conversation answering questions, admitting mistakes and rejecting any inappropriate questions.
Experts say it can be used to write essays, stories, poems and even solve computer coding. 13 , which OpenAI admit. Sometimes it writes answers which are incorrect or don’t make sense, and it occasionally guesses what the user has asked it, rather than asking more follow-up questions to understand the question better.
What are people saying about it?
14 . Some think students might use it to cheat whereas others think they should use the tool in the classroom to help children learn.
15 . They argue that, just like when the calculator or Google were created, people were unsure at first, but if teachers introduce the technology and teach pupils the benefits but also the downfalls that could help their learning.
There are the problems with ChatGPT. CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman tweeted last year: “ChatGPT is incredibly limited…it’s a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now.”

18
What makes Mother Earth proud? Seeing you use your own power to get around. Many adventure tour operators arrange cycling, hiking and walking holidays. Next rides are trains and buses. The greenest rides typically run on electric power. For example, Switzerland is taking the lead with its hybrid buses trains powered by hydroelectricity (水力发电); Japan is running close behind.
Choosing a green hotel
19 , you can make the greatest impact. Look for a fact sheet online, or call the front desk. You can search for hotels approved by respected certification programmes, such as Green Key and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Choosing green activities
The Earth-friendly choices are numerous: You can sail, bike, kayak, swim, bird-watch and play I-spy-a-monkey in a tree. 20 . You can also lend a hand during your holiday. The green movement has changed from how to preserve and protect to how to use less and do good when you’re there.

A flower festival is an event during which many types of flowers are shown to the public. In some cases, a flower festival may be a small event attended by local people who grow plants as a hobby. Other festivals are big international events. 21
Usually, a flower festival takes place at a time of year when many types of flowers are fully open. 22 In this case, the organizers must make sure that the event is scheduled during the right time of year for that type.
Some festivals are arranged to encourage flower growers to grow certain types of plants. 23 There will be competitions. Prizes are given to those who grow the largest, most colorful or hardiest(最耐寒的)plants.
Besides competing for prizes, many flower growers show their plants in flower shows for business purposes. Some people use these events to win contracts with companies that buy large numbers of flowers. 24 And some growers have created new types of flowers. They put their newly created plants on show at these festivals.

Sandstorms are among the most violent natural disasters. High winds lift dirt or sand into the air, causing damage, injuries, and deaths. 26
27 If you have a mask, put it on immediately. If you don’t have one, wrap a piece of cloth tightly around your head to protect your nose and mouth.
Look for shelter (避难所). Even a parked car will do, so long as it is off the road and not in danger of getting hit. Sand will fly around when it hits objects. 28 If you cannot get to shelter, try to stay low to the ground and protect your head with your arms, a backpack or a pillow.
Protect yourself from flying objects. Look for a large rock to cover as much of your body as possible. 29 Flying sand can hurt, but a dust storm’s high winds can also carry heavier (more dangerous) objects.
Wait out the storm. 30 It’s much too dangerous. Stay where you are and wait for it to pass before you attempt to move to a different location. If you can quickly reach such shelter before a dust storm reaches you, get there as quickly as possible and stay inside. Close all windows and doors, and wait out the storm.
A.Cover your nose and mouth.
B.Wait other people to help you.
C.Staying out is a better choice.
D.Don’t try to move through the storm.
E.This can protect you from flying sand.
F.So you should still try to cover as much of your skin and face as possible.
G.It’s good to know what to do if you see a wall of sand.

●Get caught up on schoolwork.
Not all of us are straight “A” students. Take this time to go to the library and review material for the next year in advance. 33 . No need to rush or stress out. It’s just important not to forget anything you learned in the past year over the summer.

Most people know that a balanced diet and regular exercise are very important. 41 Instead of concentrating on how to get the best results efficiently and effectively, people usually rush through their workouts, or they make the same common workout mistakes. If you want to achieve the best workout results, here are a few helpful tips to bear in mind.
42 This does not challenge your muscles, and it can actually prevent muscles from growing and repairing themselves. Instead of always sticking to the same old workout, it is important to change your routine every six to eight weeks. 43 For example, you can choose swimming, yoga, or biking to make sure your whole body stays fit. This will help make your workouts more interesting, and benefit your health and muscle development as well.
Another mistake people tend to make is to work out too hard, too often. Your body needs to rest between workouts; otherwise, no progress will be made. 44 Then, for those who don’t want to get off schedule by skipping a day, shorter workouts of about twenty minutes can be used on other days. For more variety in workouts, you could also plan an easier routine for forty to sixty minutes between days of shorter, more intense workouts. Experts recommend, however, taking at least one day off completely each week, especially after several hard workout days in a row.
In reality, no one is perfect. However, if you want to make a difference in your overall health, there are some things you can do. Stretch before and after every workout. Do not rush your routine, and do not work out too little or too much. 45
A.Exercising on a regular basis can never be more important.
B.However, most people do not know how to exercise properly.
C.It is also important to add a variety of workouts to your routine.
D.In fact, it may take a couple of weeks to see your visible changes in your body.
E.It is best to keep the number of hard workout routines to no more than two per week.
F.One of the most common workout mistakes is doing the same routine over and over again.
G.Remember not to make these common workout mistakes, and always have fun while exercising.
If you are beginning to apply for college, you probably want to know what will be the most impressive things to include in your college application. Of course, each school evaluates different criteria, but all of them will be looking for students who are smart, ambitious, and passionate about life. 46
Choose your high school classes with intention. Colleges do actually care about the courses you have taken and how well you do in each. 47 While there are many other important factors at play, nearly every university is going to look closely at this one.
48 This seems obvious, but it is also one of the most critical acceptance criteria that college admissions officers look at when choosing who will attend. Once you have selected your courses, you need to do the best possible work you can. You don ’t need to have straight A’s in all your classes-especially the most demanding ones. However, you should do the strongest work you can handle.
Participate in extracurricular (课外的) activities. College admissions representatives look for students who have unique perspectives about the world around them. 49 However, to have those qualities, it is necessary to participate in activities beyond what might typically be expected.
Obtain some solid letters of recommendation. 50 Colleges will typically want to see recommendations from those who know you well. Not only do they offer some personal opinions about your character, but they also show that someone is willing to guarantee for you and believes in your reputation.
A.Struggle for good grades.
B.Grades and test scores are important components.
C.In fact, it is one of the key considerations for admission.

Maybe you plan to ring in 2023 with a new resolve to lose weight, exercise more, not sweat the small stuff. And maybe these resolutions sound familiar — maybe just like the ones you made a year ago! So how can you ensure that your determination to get healthier in 2023 sticks? 51
Dream big. Want to compete in a marathon or triathlon? Lose 50 pounds or just enough to fit into clothes you once loved? With perseverance (毅力), encouragement, and support, you can do it. 52 Many will cheer you on. Some will be happy to help in practical ways, such as by training with you or taking on tasks you normally handle in order to free up your time.
53 Any time you fail to make a change, consider it a step toward your goal. Why? Because each sincere attempt represents a lesson learned. When you hit a snag (碰钉子), take a moment to think about what did and didn’t work. Maybe you took on too big a challenge? 54
Give thanks for what you do. Set your sights on finishing that marathon, not on running it. If you compete to complete, you’ll be a winner even if you wind up walking as much as you run. With exercise — and so many other goals we set — you’ll benefit even when doing less than you’d like to do. 55 If your goal for Tuesday is a 30-minute workout at the gym, but you only squeeze (挤出) in 10 minutes, feel grateful for that. It’s enough. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
A.Learn from the failures.
B.Avoid repeating past failures.
C.Any activity is always better than none.
D.An ambitious aim often inspires others to help you.
E.Try the following tips to help you create long-lasting change.
F.Having a solid system can help you stay motivated and accountable.
G.If so, change into a less ambitious challenge, or break the big one into tinier steps.
The Power of 10 Minutes
How can we find ourselves with extra two hours? It probably comes in short little bursts of 5 to 10 minutes. Maybe you’re early to your school. 56 . Instead of jumping on social media, you can actually use those little breaks to do something productive.
Strengthen Relationship
In college, you’ll be eager to call your parents every single night. Besides, you know it’s necessary to stay in touch with your friends. A phone call doesn’t have to last an hour to get in some good conversation. A 5-minute’s call is enough. An email is even quicker. 57 .
Strengthen Body
58 , or a few stretches (伸展运动) can give your back a break from desk and chair. A few minutes of exercise goes a long way. Why not make full use of the breaks between classes to get actively involved in exercise? Your body will thank you.
59
Sometimes we’re so busy that our lives are in a mess, with piles of books on our desks, clothes everywhere on the floor at our dorms. We usually think it a waste of time cleaning up, therefore let them be. Instead, begin with a 5-minute’s tidying up. And keep it up every day, you’ll be amazed to find your life organized and get yourself refreshed.
Be More Productive
Want to be extra productive? 60 . You can write all of the tasks you’d like to complete that day, week, or month on the list. Keep it handy. The next time you find yourself with 10 extra minutes, you’ll know exactly what you can work on.
A.But both make a difference
B.Challenge yourself
C.Refresh yourself
D.A 10-minute’s walk can get your blood flowing better
E.Perhaps you even get stuck waiting for a bus for 10 minutes
F.The next time you have minutes to spare, write out a to-do list
G.Bending over the desk provides you with a short but useful rest

On September 8, I spoke with Alexander at the National Book Festival. I asked about his new novel, The Door of No Return, which is due out on September 27 for young readers. 72 .
Did any experiences inspire you to write The Door of No Return?
73 Going there so much, tasting the food, meeting the people, and putting my feet in the ocean, I felt some type of warmness. I felt like I was connected to Ghana. I wanted to write a story that was based there. Those trips inspired me.

Ask open-ended questions and be a good listener.
77 If your colleague can’t share their feelings freely, that makes a situation more complicated. In this case, asking open-ended questions is the way to enable the flow of ideas— you don’t really need to talk a lot, just show your interest and listen carefully.
Share a walk
Besides numerous health benefits, walking also is a great stress-relieving and meditative activity. 78 Also, consider going to the cinema or theatre, hanging out in the club or eating out in the park, drinking coffee at the cafe or going shopping—make sure that you choose the activity they enjoy and act.
79
A simple hug and a friendly smile can break the ice and make another feel much better. Hugging is especially helpful when you don’t have the right words. Moreover, a recent research shows that hugging causes the release of oxytocin (催产素), a chemical known as a natural stress reliever.

Many people tend to peel(削皮)fruit and vegetables when preparing them. But often, it’s not necessary. 81 What’s more, discarded(被丢弃的)fruit and vegetable peels cause climate change.
Fruit and vegetables are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber and many phytochemicals that protect your cells from harm. 82 In 2017, the World Health Organization reported that around 3.9 million deaths a year worldwide were linked to people not eating enough fruit and vegetables.
Eating 400g of fruit and vegetables a day, as the WHO recommends, is difficult to achieve for many people. So could consuming fruit and vegetable peels help with this issue by adding important nutrients to people’s diets? 83 For example, nutritionally important amounts of vitamins, such as vitamin C, and minerals like iron and zinc, are found in the peel of root vegetables like wild carrots, sweet potatoes and white potatoes. And the US Department of Agriculture shows that unpeeled apples contain 15% more vitamin C than their peeled equivalents.
84 According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, uneaten food, including peel, generates 8%—10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. New Zealand alone reports an annual wastage of 13,658 tons of vegetable peels and 986 tons of fruit peels.
Given the nutrient content of peel and its contribution to food waste, why do people peel fruit and vegetables? Some must be peeled for different reasons. For example, their outer portions are uneatable, don’t taste nice, are hard to clean or cause harm. Also, peeling may be a necessary part of the recipe, for example, when making mashed potato(土豆泥).
Are you still confused about whether to peel fruit and vegetables? 85
A.They can certainly contribute.
B.There are important nutrients in the peel.
C.Sometimes, it’s necessary to peel fruit and vegetables.
D.Actually, if many peels are eatable, don’t peel them if unnecessary.
E.With a little creativity, you can increase your fruit and vegetable intake.
F.Another reason for not discarding peels is their effect on the environment.
G.Not consuming enough of these nutrient-rich foods leads to an increased risk of deadly diseases.
Jumping rope is popular but we tend to ignore (忽视) its benefits. 86 A study found that college men who spent 10 minutes jumping rope daily for six weeks improved their cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness just as much as college men who spent thirty minutes jogging for the same time. Here are some benefits of jumping rope.
87
Since most of your major muscles are working when you jump rope, the exercise creates a lot of heat in the body. Your body needs to burn more fuel to produce this energy, so it burns lots of calories. It burns more calories than any other exercises, such as jogging, cycling and swimming.
Improves coordination (协调)
Jumping rope requires good coordination, especially as you advance to more skilled moves. 88 It improves coordination by requiring several body parts to communicate in order to complete one movement. The feet must jump in time with the wrists turning in order to create a continuous jumping motion.
Reduces injury risk
With your improved coordination from jumping rope, you’ll be less likely to get hurt either during exercise or in daily activities. 89 As a result, you are more agile (灵活的) and your body awareness is improved greatly. This guarantees fewer injuries.
Improves heart health
Since jumping rope gets your heart pumping, it’s great for your cardiovascular system and heart health. Jumping rope can increase your VO2 Max (最大摄氧量), the measure of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can breathe during exercise. The higher someone’s VO2 max, the more cardiovascular endurance (耐受力) they have.
Jumping rope gives us a full-body workout with just one piece of equipment and one move. 90 Jump to some music, or take your rope to a nearby park to enjoy the fun.
A.Burns calories
B.Improves muscles
C.It benefits us not only physically but also mentally.
D.You can quickly swing the rope twice within each jump.
E.It may even be more effective than other forms of exercise.
F.Jumping rope forces you to move your upper and lower body together.
G.So jumping rope helps you stay calm, clear and focused in everything you do.
Do you feel nervous before and during the exams? Are you afraid of taking the test? Some students can’t sleep well the day before the exam. 91 Learning to deal with stress is very important and necessary. Here are four steps that really work.
Arrive on time. 92 Arriving too early will give you time to sit there and worry about things.
Plan your time. You should know how many questions you have to answer in the exam. 93 Don’t waste time. When you come across questions that you can’t solve, what should you do? Don’t waste too much time on them and remember you have to answer all the questions in the exam.
94 If you finish the exam before the time is up, you’d better make full use of the time to check your answers instead of just sitting there. Please write slowly and carefully.
Move on. 95 The best thing you can do is to go home and study for the next one.
A.Use all your time.
B.You can ask your teacher for some advice.
C.Then plan your time to answer all the questions.
D.These suggestions will help you a lot.
E.Arriving late will make you feel nervous.
F.Others may feel nervous during the exam.
G.Once an exam is over, forget about it.
Have you ever been in a situation when you are unwilling to carry out the tasks that need to be done? 96 Though it often happens to us for various reasons, there are still some ways to overcome it.
Jump out of bed at the beginning of the day. Research tells us that turning off the alarm clock and going back to sleep are bad for us. How to Improve Speed Reading Skills
Speed reading is one of many skills that can improve your reading comprehension and shorten your study time. 111
Look at groups of words, not single words.
112 , then this will slow your reading speed down. However, if you can get into the habit of reading groups or chunks (大量) of words at onetime, then you can read much faster. Start by trying to look at a group of three or four words at once, then work up to looking at an entire line of works. Focus on words that give the sentence meaning, such as the nouns and verbs and pay less attention to the filler words, such as a, the, and, etc.
113
Scanning is a highly effective way of extracting answers from a text without really reading it. If you know exactly what you are looking for—a name, a date, a statistic, or a specific word—you can find it quickly by skipping over large chunks of the text. To scan, first visualize the word, number, or phrase you would like to find. 114 The information you are looking for should pop out at you.
Race the clock.
You can train yourself to read faster by timing yourself as you go. Start by getting your base time. Set a timer (定时器) for fifteen minutes, and speed read as you normally do. 115 , check to see how far you have got. Do not count the words, just the pages or paragraphs. Record your figures: for instance, you might write “15 min/6.5 pages.”

B.Check your comprehension
C.Scan for keywords
D.Here are some speed reading techniques
E.When the timer goes off
F.You have to pause sometimes to understand what a passage is saying

Viruses can spread from human contact with animals, so this is very important.

Emotional regulation (情绪管理) is taking any action that changes the intensity of an emotional experience. 146 . It refers to the ability to effectively control our emotions through various approaches. We are expected to manage our emotions in ways that are socially acceptable. There are a number of skills that can help us self-regulate our emotions.
147
Emotions happen fast. We don’t think “now I will be angry” — we just suddenly have fires in our eyes and become extremely angry. So the number one skill in regulating difficult emotions is to pause. Take a breath. Slow down the moment between trigger (触发) and response.
Noticing what you feel
An equally important skill involves the ability to become aware of what you’re feeling. Dr. Judson Brewer, MD Ph. D.recommends practices for becoming more curious about your own physical reactions. In what parts of your body are you noticing feelings? Is your stomach upset? Is your heart racing? 148 . Looking into what is happening to you physically can also draw away your focus and reduce the intensity of the emotion.
Naming what you feel
After noticing what you feel, the ability to name it can help you get control of what is happening. Ask yourself: What would you call the emotions you’re feeling? Is it anger, sadness, or disappointment? 149 .
Accepting the emotion
150 . Rather than beating yourself up for feeling angry or scared, recognize that your emotional reactions are acceptable. Try to practice self-sympathy and give yourself respect. Recognize that experiencing emotions is a normal human reaction.
