The Perfect Gift
Colin walked through the mall with his head down. He couldn’t bear to look at another window display of great Christmas gifts he couldn’t afford. There were only a few days left until Christmas, and Colin still didn’t t have a present for his parents. He had only managed to save four dollars and seventeen cents. He counted the money in his pocket and sighed heavily.
“You look upset today, Colin. What is the matter?” Colin’s older sister Whitney asked.
Colin explained his problem to his sister.
“Why don’t you make them something?” Whitney suggested.
“Making presents is for babies,” Colin said. “Mom and Dad won’t like baby stuff.”
“Hey, that is not true. When I was your age, I wrote Mom and Dad a poem for Christmas. They loved it so much that they had it framed (给……做框),” Whitney said.
Colin knew that was true. The poem was hanging in the living room right above the fireplace. Mom and Dad often stood at the fireplace and read the poem to him. But Colin wasn’t good at writing poems, so that didn’t really help him.
“It doesn’t have to be a poem,” Whitney said, “It could be anything that makes them think of you whenever they look at it. That’s why homemade gifts are special — because they make you think of the person who made it.”
“But I don’t know how to make anything Mom and Dad would actually want!” Colin said, kicking a tiny stone across the parking lot.
Whitney opened the car door. “Yes, you do! You’re always drawing those funny little comics. Why don’ t you do a family portrait(全家福) as a comic? Mom and Dad would love it.“
”Maybe," Colin said. He thought about the idea the whole way home. He even pictured how he would draw everyone.

Elizabeth walked on to the patio (露台), carrying a bunch of roses. “Beautiful flowers for… for… oh, I’ll never get it right!” she cried, throwing the roses on the ground.
Elizabeth had been practicing her speech for a week. She’d presented flowers to the dog, the cat, and the statue in the garden. Part of her couldn’t wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff, famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had taken piano lessons. She’d listened to Ms. Wolff’s recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.
Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr. Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms. Wolff after the performance. Why did he have to choose her? She hated oral reports, plays at the gatherings — anything where she had to talk in front of people. Some of her classmates liked giving speeches. Myron gave a speech every time Mr. Leaf called on him. Melissa always volunteered to make announcements. Let one of them present the flowers!
“How’s the speech coming?” asked Elizabeth’s mother from the back door. “Want to practice on me?”
“No, thanks,” said Elizabeth. “Mum, I can’t do this! I’ll forget. I might even pass out!”
“No, you won’t, honey. Think about it… sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honor!”
“Not if I do something dumb.”
But Elizabeth kept practicing. “Beautiful flowers for a beautiful performance…” Each night, Elizabeth dreamed about music, spotlights, and a shining grand piano. Sometimes she tripped and fell. Other times she messed up the words. Once the dream ended with Ms. Wolff rushing offstage before Elizabeth could say anything.
Then the big day when Ms. Wolff gave a concert finally came. Elizabeth and her mother took their seats. She held a bunch of red roses.
“All set, Elizabeth?” Mr. Leaf asked.
Her stomach tightened, but she nodded at him.

From the moment my husband brought home a box of six chicks from Tractor Supply Company, our nine-year-old, Sophie, didn’t let them out of her sight. She named them Trixie, Beauty, Sweet Pea, Speedie, Captain Flint, and Adrian (we were reading Treasure Island and watching Rocky at the time).
Sophie made a promise that she would take good care of them and took at least one chicken everywhere we let her. We were content with this; after all, it was a good way to make her dutiful and responsible. So when we wouldn’t let them sleep in her bed, she was very upset. She, actually, argued about this issue again and again, claiming that it is Duty NO.1 to company her baby chickens to sleep. Later, we made a compromise that we’ve allowed one inside at a time if Sophie immediately cleans up after the visit.
On a special festival, she dressed as a chicken and convinced us it was the turn of Trixie and Sweet to come with her to get candies from the neighbors — that’s Duty NO.2 to company her baby to have fun. The reactions from neighbors were quite amusing. “Wait, are these real chickens you’re holding?” “Of course! They’re my babies, and I am the mother.” Sophie answered excitedly. Trixie and Sweet cooed (咕咕叫) the whole time, seeming to make response.
One hot day, I buried myself in piles of work when Sophie rushed into the room, asking “Mommy, can I take Captain Flint to the pond?” To be frank, I didn’t quite catch what she said but still nodded, even without taking my eyes off the screen. She jumped to cheer. “Captain Flint, let’s head for the pond now!” “Coo, coo.” Then they rushed out of the room.
Several minutes later, I suddenly realized that Sophie just went to the pond with a chicken! Could Sophie swim? No!!! Could chickens swim? No!!! Could anything unexpected happen?

It was a happy Tuesday afternoon. After a long day of classes, the students were now hurrying back home. Maaz put an arm around Hamza’s neck. “It’s the first time I scored full marks in the math exam you helped me prepare for,” Maaz added a little giggle. “My mum will be happy, Thank you!”
Hamza and Maaz were close friends ever since they were kids, but they were opposites. While Hamza was very confident, a born genius and a part of all social activities at school, Maaz was more of an introvert. He preferred to stay in his comfort zone and wasn’t very strong academically but was very hardworking.
The next day, Hamza had been sleeping through all classes. Maaz came over and thumped his back, “what’s wrong bro?”
Hamza opened one drowsy eyelid, “I played video games all night, I’m exhausted.” Maaz tugged at his shirt, “You have done the history assignment, right?”
Hamza suddenly sat up and held his head. It had completely escaped his mind. “Maaz, can you let me go through your work? I just have to check how long it will take me,” Hamza frowned in worry.
“Sure buddy,” Maaz added as he handed over his assignment and dissolved into the crowd of students rushing for recess.
In history class the next day, Ms Afsheen looked furious. In a voice that wasn’t loud, but echoed through the silent classroom, she said: “Maaz Ali, stand up.”
Ms. Afsheen pursed her lips and glared at him. “Maaz thinks that he is so smart that he will copy Hamza’s entire assignment and the teacher won’t even know, Hamza’s face turned pale.
“Class, today I will tell you the consequences of a student who tries to cheat. Maaz gets a zero on his assignment,” Ms. Afsheen announced.
Maaz stood with his head bowed, glistening tears silently dropping to the floor. Hamza was looking everywhere, but at him. He couldn’t face his friend.

The economic downturn caught us. We sold our ranch and moved to town, Mother had decided to open a day nursery. She had had no training, but that didn’t stand in her way. She sent away for correspondence courses in child care, did the lessons and in six months formally qualified herself for the task. It wasn’t long before she had a full enrollment and a waiting list. I accepted all this as a perfectly normal instance of Mother’s ability. But neither the nursery nor the motel my parents bought later had provided enough income to send my sister and me to college. In two years I would be ready for college. Time was running out, and Mother was anxious for ways to save money. It was clear that Dad could do no more than he was doing already — farming 80 acres in addition to holding a fulltime job. A few months after we’d sold the motel, Mother arrived home with a used green typewriter.
“That’s all we can afford,” Mother said. “It’s good enough to learn on.” And from that day on, as soon as the table was cleared and the dishes were done, Mother would disappear into her sewing room to practice. The slow tap, tap, tap went on some nights until midnight. Soon I heard Mother got a job at the radio station. I was not the least bit surprised, or impressed. But she was wild with joy.
Monday, after her first day at work, I could see that the excitement was gone.
Tuesday, Dad made dinner and cleaned the kitchen. Mother stayed in her sewing room, practicing. “Is Mother all right?” I asked Dad. “She’s having a little trouble with her typing,” he said. “She needs to practice. I think she’d appreciate it if we all helped out a bit more. You might just remember that she is working primarily so you can go to college.”

When David headed out to work one day at his job as a server in a luxurious restaurant, it seemed like a day like any other. On this particular night, David was placed in the patio section — the busiest part of the restaurant.
As David was running around the restaurant, trying desperately to keep the heaving number of guests satisfied with their food and drinks orders, one particular customer walked in. Richard, a college student at the local Sacramento State University picked a spot on the patio and sat down. He wasn’t just a regular student looking for a cheap night out. He was in fact an accomplished graduate and had come straight to the restaurant to celebrate finishing his senior year. While sitting alone and waiting patiently for his friends to join him, Richard looked around at the restaurant, taking in the relaxing vibe. However, he couldn’t help but notice one person was certainly not getting a chance to relax. He was struck by how hard David seemed to be working.
Finally, Richard’s friends arrived. As it was a special night for them, they really went all out to celebrate with the best and most delicious treats they fancied. Together, they ordered their dinners, and drinks. As Richard and his friends continued to enjoy the evening, he had the opportunity to reflect on his life: Not everyone has the privilege and opportunity to attend college and celebrate the end of senior year with a luxurious dinner of his choice. Similarly, not everyone who has been given these gifts always truly appreciates. Richard had been in David’s shoes before, and worked as a waiter to make ends meet. So he decided to pay a big $382, leaving a tip that equaled the bill itself ($191.35).

Last April, Jake drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he went back home, Jake’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Jake approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Jake began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a rough mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Jake, driving a four-wheel truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Jake’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Jake was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Jake were a delivery worker named Paul and his friend Tom, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Jake’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Paul quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

The Bicycle
When I was nine I needed to earn some money, so I asked Mr. Miceli, the newspaper publisher in my Chicago neighbourhood, about an after-school paper route. He agreed only if I had a bicycle.
My dad bought me a used bike, but right after that he fell ill and couldn’t teach me to ride. Mr. Miceli, however, merely asked to see the bike. So I walked to his garage, showed it to him and got the job.
At first, I filled my delivery bag with rolled papers over the handlebars and walked my bike down the sidewalks. But pushing a bike with a load of papers was awkward; after a few days I borrowed Mom’s two-wheeled shopping cart.
It took me longer to make my deliveries by cart, but I didn’t mind. I sent each paper to its proper destination. In rain or snow, I put Dad’s old raincoat over the cart to keep the papers dry. I got to meet everyone in the neighborhood — working-class people of Italian, German or Polish origins who were invariably kind to me.
When Dad returned from the hospital, he was too weak to resume his original job. Now we needed every penny we could raise to pay bills, so we sold the bike. Mr. Miceli must have known I wasn’t using a bike, but he said nothing about it to me.
On the Thursday evening before Christmas, 1951, I rang my first customer’s doorbell. Even though the lights were on, nobody answered, so I went on to the next house. No answer, nor did anyone respond at the next family on my route, or the one after.
I was very worried; I had to pay for my papers every Friday. And while it was almost Christmas, I never thought that everyone would be out shopping. So I was very happy when, going up the walkway to Mr. Gordon’s house, I heard music and voices. I rang the bell.

Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day of celebration.
Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, Sara’s father, Anthony Pascucci, 60, woke up excited to string lights and decorate the lawn of his home and didn’t take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas decorations in the community. Anthony Pascucci believed the brightness of the lights could counter (抵消) some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19.
In 2020, as in every other year, Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if sparkles were dripping onto the hallway. Sara’s brother, Anthony Jr. helped with the wiring, while Sara hung ornaments (装饰物) on the tree inside the house playing the song “White Christmas” over and over to keep everyone in the spirit. The whole place looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve, the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree. Everyone was looking forward to overly stuffed clams-a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family.
However, Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn’t have any symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came back they all learned that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February, Anthony Pascucci passed away after getting lung infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. It was almost too much to bear.

“Howie! You can’t go in! Mom told us to avoid Mrs. Carrigan’s house at all costs! We can’t go in there,” Howie’s big brother, Archie, yelled at the boy who had entered the older woman’s yard upon seeing her Halloween decorations.
The little kid turned and looked at his two big brothers angrily. “But she put up decorations. She wants us to come in,” Howie said, pointing at the pumpkins in the yard and the trick-or-treat sign on her doorway.
“Come out, Howie! Let’s go! I think Mom thinks she’s a ... a witch,” his other big brother, Bobby, whispered the last part. “What? Are you afraid of her?” Howie laughed, knowing that his brothers would not like that. He saw their frowns, but his words were true. They were afraid. No one in the neighborhood went into Mrs. Carrigan’s house or even stayed close.
The old woman was strange. She only dressed in black and never brushed her hair. She couldn’t walk straight and never smiled at anyone, so people avoided her the few times she was seen outside. But Howie was not afraid. He was going to knock. The worst that could happen was being ignored or told to go away. Despite his big brothers’ words, he went up the tiny steps and rang the doorbell.
“Howie! Howie! No!” his big brothers whisper-yelled at him from the sidewalk, and Howie turned and put his finger to his mouth, signaling for them to shut up. But he saw their eyes widen and their faces pale even beneath the Halloween makeup they were all wearing. Howie felt something behind him and turned slowly, not knowing what to expect. He felt the cold air; he felt like ringing the bell was not a good idea.
The old woman was there, staring at him surprisedly. He saw her black clothes, and he knew precisely why everyone thought she was a witch. She looked like the ones in cartoons. But Howie squared his shoulders, raised his plastic pumpkin bucket, and said, “Trick or Treat!”

For the next two days,Colin drew one picture after another. He was so absorbed in his work that he even ignored his sister’s calling him from downstairs to have dinner. The waste-paper basket was filled with pictures he was not satisfied with but he wouldn’t give up. He was trying to make sure everyone was drawn perfectly. Finally, he had everyone just right, his mother wearing her usual kind smile, his father holding his favorite book, his sister looking good in her red dress, and he himself standing beside them smiling widely. He wrapped the present carefully and put it under the tree on Christmas morning.
After all the other presents were opened, Colin handed his gift to his parents. Colin held his breath as his mom carefully unwrapped it. He had expected his mum would be disappointed but the moment she saw the comic, she started to cry.“ This is the best present you’ve ever given us, Colin. You must have spent a lot of time on it,” his mother said, holding the boy in her arms.“I know just where to put it,” his dad said with a smile. He took the drawing and placed it beside Whitneys poem above the fireplace. Colin stared up at the comic. It really was the perfect gift.

In case of emergency, I took a river tube (救生圈) and hurried to the pond. I’m making a ship for my Captain Flint.” Several small branches were carefully arranged, and some unknown thin long leaves tied them together. “Mum, but it still doesn’t look like a real ship”, Sophie murmured frustratedly. “What about this?” I raised the river tube, adding, “We can make it the body of the ship and the branches the board of it.” “Brilliant! Let’s start!” Her eyes relit with joy and we worked together to make a perfect ship.
Captain Flint’s ship would start its first sail. We put Captain Flint gently on the board, and use a long branch stuck to the ship to control the ship’s direction. It seemed quite excited about its first sail, flapping its wings and cooing melodiously. “Go, Captain Flint!” Sophie cheered, directing the ship have a short but encouraging sail. “Mommy, you know, it’s Duty NO. 3 to company her baby to finish their first adventure.” She look at me with a dazzling smile. Suddenly he overheard Rayyan ask, “Why didn’t you tell the truth to the teacher?” Maaz shushed him, “It’s okay. I’m not selling my friend for some marks. I will study harder next time.” Hamza sat down in shock. Maaz’s words had stirred a realization in him. Was scoring zero marks in an assignment really worth his friendship? After all, it was his own fault that he played video games through the night and didn’t do his homework. He knew Maaz really worked hard for the assignment, but Maaz let all his hard work go to waste, only to protect a friend’s dignity.
With new courage filling his heart, Hamza walked to the staffroom in search of Ms Afsheen. He had to confess his mistake. His hands crossed in humility, he owned up to the teacher about everything that had happened. Ms Afsheen nodded her head in approval, “Yes, it’s my fault too. I shouldn’t have blamed Maaz without getting to the bottom of it.” She then appreciated Hamza for taking responsibility for the mistake he made. Ms Afsheen did give Hamza a zero on the assignment. Hamza rushed to the playground looking for Maaz. With tears in his eyes, he apologised to him and told him that he had owned up to the teacher. The best friends embraced each other and, with beaming faces, went to play football before recess could end.

Wednesday, I arrived home earlier and was surprised by what I saw — Mother was crying in the corner of the couch. I approached cautiously and touched her shoulder. “Mother?” I said. “What’s happened?” She took a long breath and managed a weak smile. “I’m going to lose this new job. I can’t type fast enough. I guess we all have to fail sometime,” Mother said quietly. I could sense her pain and the tension of holding back the strong emotions that were interrupted by my arrival. Suddenly, something inside me turned. I reached out and put my arms around her. She broke then. Sitting beside her on the couch, I began very slowly to understand the pressures on her.
Mother took another job earning half, but the evening practice sessions on the old green typewriter continued. I had a very different feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her tapping away. I knew there was something more going on in there than a woman learning to type. And I knew there was something strong growing in my heart. In time we harvested the fruits of labor. I went to college. Years after, I proudly accepted a job as a newspaper reporter, and Mother had already been a journalist with our hometown paper. Now the old green typewriter sits in my office, unrepaired. It is a reminder — not of failure, but of my mother’s courage, the courage to go ahead.

Sensing my confusion, he continued, “We’ve all seen you in the rain and snow with that little shopping cart, so we suppose you ought to have a bicycle.” Deeply touched, I felt tears of gratitude filling my eyes.
After walking the bicycle home, I opened those envelopes. They held Christmas cards from every subscriber, along with their subscription fees and tips. Kindness did not end there, though. The next day, when I got to Mr. Miceli’s garage, he was waiting outside. “Bring your bike tomorrow morning, and I’ll teach you to ride,” he offered.
