As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children. Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification. “Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts (干旱) have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers(肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi consolidated her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”
By September 2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant 1 million trees by 2018. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.
    24. How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?
    A. They made her decide to leave the country.
    B. They helped her better understand her father.
    C. They fired her enthusiasm for helping others.
    D. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
    25. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?
    A. Low rainfall. B. Soil pollution.
    C. Cold weather. D. Forest damage.
    26. Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia?
    A. To create job opportunities for young people.
    B. To help the children obtain a basic education.
    C. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers.
    D. To promote the protection of their farmland.
    27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Saving Water in Tunisia
    B. Planting Trees of Native Species
    C. Holding back the Sahara
    D. Fighting Poverty in North Africa
    C
A recent issue of National Geographic magazine described one of the wonders of the Earth, the tiny silver ants of the Sahara Desert. These ants live in areas where temperatures reach up to 57℃, as the article described, an environment “where shoes melt”.
These tiny ants are amazing. In the Sahara Desert, where most creatures avoid going out in the middle of the day to avoid high temperatures, the Saharan silver ants have evolved a number of adaptations to do just that. Scientists have discovered that several unique features of the Saharan silver ants permit them to grow well in a scorching climate.
These ants have longer legs than other ants, which keep their bodies critically greater distance away from the hot desert sand. The ants run 108 times the length of their own bodies every second at a speed of just over 3 kph. And they keep track of the position of the sun, so that they always know the most direct route back to the nest, thus lowering their time spent in extreme heat. Their bodies produce proteins that resist heat. Some other creatures produce such proteins after they come in contact with extreme heat. But since the silver ants only exit the nest for a few minutes at a time — not long enough for the protein to take effect — they produce the protein while still in the nest before they go out, or they would die before the protein could take effect.
Researchers also discovered that the ants are covered on their tops and sides with the uniquely triangular(三角的) shape of the silver hairs, which enable them to dissipate (消散) heat. The hairs help an ant’s body exchange its heat to a cooler area, even under full sun conditions. This discovery inspired the scientists, for it could lead to new materials and paints that can be applied to roof tops or cars to keep them cool. And it is also expected to be applied in clinical care, wearable devices, protective clothing and other fields.
    28. What does the underlined word “scorching” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. extremely chilly B. extremely cool
    C. extremely mild D. extremely hot
    29. Which statement can be inferred from the text?
    A. The Saharan silver ants’ hairs act like a tiny air-heating system.
    B. The Saharan silver ants are born with the ability to track the moon.
    C. The Saharan silver ants’ adaptations to the desert are to be discovered.
    D. Inspiration from the Saharan silver ants will bring up more new inventions.
    30. When do the Saharan silver ants produce the protein that resists heat?
    A. After coming in contact with extreme heat.
    B. Before traveling in the sun.
    C. While running under full sun conditions.
    D. After coming back to the nest from outside.
    31. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Small Ants Make a Big Difference
    B. Small Ants Hunt for Food Easily
    C. Small Ants Survive in the Sahara Desert
    D. Small Ants Jump the Fastest in the World
    D
The most important determining factor of success or failure at work and in life is self-awareness, the ability to understand who we are, how others see us, and how we fit into the world.
For millions of years, the ancestors of humans evolved painfully slowly. However, about 150,000 years ago there was an explosive development in the human brain where, among other things, we gained the ability to examine our own thoughts, feelings and behaviors, as well as to see things from another’s point of view. Not only did this transformation create the foundation for art, spiritual practices and language, but it came with a survival advantage for our ancestors, who had to work together in order to survive.
Though we may not face the same day-to-day threats to our existence, self-awareness is no less critical. There is strong scientific evidence that people who know themselves and how others see them are happier. They are smarter, superior students. They raise more mature children. They also tend to be more creative, confident and less aggressive.
But for most people it is easier to choose self-delusion(自我欺骗) rather than the cold hard truth. Our increasingly “me” focused society makes it easier to fall into this trap. Recent generations have grown up in a world obsessed with self-esteem(自负), constantly being reminded of their special qualities. Not only are our assessments often flawed (有缺陷), but we are usually terrible judges of our own performance and abilities — from leadership skills to achievements at school and work. What’s scary is that the least competent people are usually the most confident in their abilities.
How can we avoid this fate? We must work on two specific types of insight. Internal self-awareness is an inward understanding of our passions and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses and so on. And external self-awareness, knowing how others see you, means understanding yourself from the outside in.
For those looking to gain true insight, remember that other people often see us more objectively than we see ourselves and that self-examination can have hidden traps that make insight actually impossible.
    32. The first three paragraphs mainly talk about _________.
    A. the significance of self-awareness in human survival and advancement
    B. the sharp contrast between self-awareness of today and the past
    C. the necessity of a shift in self-awareness to satisfy the needs today
    D. the intelligence gap between modern men and their ancestors
    33. What’ s the problem with “me” focused society nowadays?
    A. People’s performance and abilities are overlooked.
    B. Competent people tend to be unconfident of their leadership skills.
    C. It’ s difficult to obtain an objective assessment of ourselves.
    D. Modern people fail to bring their special qualities into full play.
    34. Which of the following is an example of external self-awareness?
    A. You listen to the comments about you from others.
    B. You are fully aware of your strengths and weaknesses.
    C. You reflect your behaviors thoroughly every day.
    D. You carefully compare your behavior with that of others.
    35. In the last paragraph, the author suggests that we should _________.
    A. develop true insight to judge people more objectively
    B. try to avoid the trap set by others
    C. gain more insight by means of self-examination
    D. pay more attention to external self-awareness

    第四部分 书面表达(满分15分)
"The man faked his music" is an old fable in Chinese culture. It is about a man who was not a musician but pretended to be playing in the royal band as a musician just to get paid.
The story has a very clear moral and the plot is interesting and humorous and the character Nanguo makes us laugh and think . The author uses the story to impress upon the readers that the good quality or virtue of being honest and true to oneself and to others is a must in our life.
Undoubtedly , the story is very successful in achieving its purpose of making us understand the importance of being honest in life .
I like the story very much because it not only has a very clear story line , but also it is very humorous, relaxing and thought-provoking. I strongly recommend the story to all of you and I am sure we can all learn something from it .
