In a country where over 80% of residents live in public housing, a government commitment to sustainable urban design could have huge influence. And when it’ s a tropical country like Singapore where convenience and air conditioning are a way of life, the impact could be greater still.
Promising 42,000 new homes across five residential districts, the eco-town of Tengah will be the 24th new settlement built by Singapore’ s government since World War Ⅱ. It is, however, the first with centralized cooling, automated trash collection and a car-free town center, with which environment lovers hope to offer a roadmap for reducing carbon emissions in the Southeast Asian city-state.
The development is named as “Forest Town” by officials, due to its abundant greenery and public gardens. Once home to brickmaking factories, and later used for military training, the 2.7-square-mile site has been reclaimed by a forest in recent years. A 328-foot-wide ecological “corridor” will be maintained through its center, providing safe passage to wildlife and connecting a water catchment area on one side to a nature reserve on the other.
The project has proven a new plan for urban planners supporting green design principles and “smart” technology, according to Chong Fook Loong, group director for research and planning at Singapore’s Housing and Development Board, the agency overseeing the country’s public housing. “Tengah is a new start,” he said in a video interview, explaining that roads and parking are being pushed beneath the town center. “We’re going for the ideal concept of separated traffic, with everything underground and then the ground level totally freed up for pedestrians — for people. So, it’s a very safe environment for all.”
“We want a town that allows walking and cycling in a very user-friendly manner,” he added, saying that cycling has “taken off” in Singapore in the “last three to five years especially”. The master plan will see the installation (安装) of electric vehicle charging stations.
    4. What is special about the 24h new settlement?
    A. It can house 42,000 people. B. It will be well equipped.
    C. It will be built by the government. D. It will be environmentally friendly.
    5. Which of the following might be the design of the forest town.
    A. .
    B. .
    C. .
    D. .
    6. What can we learn from Chong Fook Loong’s words?
    A. A parking lot will put in the town center.
    B. Separated traffic will be applied.
    C. Bikes will be able to fly in the near future.
    D. All masters will install charging stations.
    7. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Ways to reduce carbon emissions
    B. A green roadmap for Singapore
    C. Eco’ smart’ city of Singapore
    D. A smart electric vehicle technology

Researchers from the University of Bath have developed motion capture technology that enables you to digitize(数字化)your dog with only one camera. The software could be used for a wide range of purposes, from helping vets diagnose lameness(跛)and monitoring recovery of their dog patients, to behavior supervision.
The University of Bath's motion capture research centre digitised the movement of 14 different breeds of dogs. Wearing special doggie motion capture suits with markers, the dogs were filmed under the supervision of scientists doing a range of movements. They used these data to create a computer model that can accurately predict and copy the poses of dogs when they re filmed without wearing the motion capture suits. This model allows 3D digital information for new dogs-their shape and movement-to be captured without markers and expensive equipment, but using a single RGBD camera instead.
The researcher Kearney said, “This is the first time RGBD images have been used to track the motion of dogs using a single camera, which is much more affordable than traditional motion capture systems that require multiple cameras. This technology allows us to study the movement of animals, which is useful for applications such as detecting lameness in a dog and measuring its recovery over time.”
The team has also started testing their method on digital images of other four-legged animals including horses, cats, lions and gorillas, with some promising results. They aim in the future to extend their animal dataset to make the results more accurate;they will also be making the dataset available for non-commercial use by others. “Our research is a step towards building accurate 3D models of animal motion along with technologies that allow us to very easily measure their movement.” said Kearney.
    8. What is special about the new software mentioned in Para 1?
    A. It equips your dog with a motion capture suit.
    B. It can be useful for pets to behave themselves.
    C. It helps you monitor dogs using only one camera.
    D. It offers a wide range of entertainment applications.
    9. What is necessary to make sure a single RGBD camera works?
    A. A special computer model must be set up in advance.
    B. The dogs must wear motion capture suits without markers.
    C. The dogs must be in the supervision of multiple cameras.
    D. 3D digital information must be sent into the cameras.
    10. What is the next step of the new technology according to Kearney?
    A. To make the dataset available for more profits.
    B. To make more accurate models of animal diseases.
    C. To extend the animal dataset to improve its accuracy.
    D. To test RGBD cameras on other four-legged animals.
    11. What's the main purpose of the passage?
    A. To encourage a new method of safe dog-walking.
    B. To introduce a new motion capture technology.
    C. To explain the applications of diagnosing dogs' diseases.
    D. To prove the efcts of the technology on different animals.

Young people who are hooked on reading science fiction may be on to something. Contrary to a common misunderstanding that reading science fiction is an unworthy practice, reading it may help young people cope, especially with the stress and anxiety of living while developing critical thinking skills and emotional intelligence for young readers.
Historically, parents have considered literature “good” for young people if it provides moral guidance that reflects their own values. The question is how does literature of science fiction perform its educational function? This is central to the conflict between parents and educators about what kids should read. Those who read it have been stigmatized as geeks who can't cope with reality.
A 2015 survey found that these science fiction readers were also major consumers of a wide range of other types of books. In fact, the study noted a close connection between reading varied literary forms and an ability to understand science. Rather than limiting readers' capacity to deal with reality, reading science fiction may expand their ability to engage reality.
Science fiction does not need to provide real stories about serious social and political issues. Instead, it offers a distance between them. This distance gives readers an approach to coping with complexity and use their imagination to manage real-life challenges. It is why they are powerful and where their value lies. What better way to deal with the uncertainty in life than with science fiction, which explores uncertainty and depicts young people as brave characters, survivors and shapers of their own fates?
Let them read science fiction. In it, young people can see themselves-coping, surviving and learning lessons- that may enable them to create their own strategies for life. But the critical thinking and wise habits of mind prompted by this type of literature may actually produce creativity that everyday life and reality typically do not.
    12. Why is science fiction rejected by many parents as a proper type of reading?
    A. It lacks the educational functions they need. B. It agrees with the common belief in society.
    C. It seldom develops critical and creative thinking. D. It results in too many expectations from parents.
    13. What is the author trying to convey with the findings of 2015 survey?
    A. Literature has a negative effect on understanding science.
    B. More other types of reading are consumed than science fiction.
    C. Reading science fiction boosts the young's ability to cope with reality.
    D. Science fiction reading restricts readers' capacity to deal with stress.
    14. What does the underlined word “depict” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Criticize. B. Employ. C. Describe. D. Suspect.
    15. What's the best title of the passage?
    A. Why science fiction is so appealing to the young readers
    B. How science fiction turns into the literature mainstream
    C. What stories science fiction is bringing to the young people
    D. How reading science fiction helps kids tackle reality
A 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据第二段中“The question is how does literature of science fiction perform its educational function? This is central to the conflict between parents and educators about what kids should read.(问题是科幻文学是如何发挥其教育功能的?这是父母和教育者之间关于孩子应该读什么的冲突的中心)”可知,很多父母拒绝把科幻小说作为一种合适的阅读类型,是因为科幻小说缺乏他们所需要的教育功能。故选A。
根据第三段“A 2015 survey found that these science fiction readers were also major consumers of a wide range of other types of books. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We all know there’s good cholesterol (胆固醇) and bad cholesterol. ____16____ A better understanding of them will give us health benefits.
Good fat is medically known as “brown fat”, typically found in the neck and shoulders of newborns. It makes up about 5 percent of an infant’s total body mass. ____17____ By age six, we have less than 5 percent of the brown fat we were born with. Researchers now believe that some people maintain brown fat deposits into adulthood. As a “good” kind, it is metabolically (新陈代谢地) efficient and actually burns excess energy to generate heat.
____18____ It is a way for your body to store excess energy that accumulates when you consume more calories than you use. It is widely distributed throughout the body. And it doesn’t use much energy, is hard to burn off, accumulates, and causes other health problems.
The fat we gain over time is almost all white fat. The increasing level of white fat is one of the major causes of shortened life spans and chronic diseases. Thus, increasing the level of brown fat makes sense.
Some studies suggest that taking a cold shower or an ice bath could activate brown fat to help your body burn more calories. Researchers have also found methods that may help people gain brown fat without the need for cold. ____19____ As brown fat is rich in iron, choosing iron supplements or food items rich in iron can keep your fat cells healthy. Nutrition is vital for your health, especially if you want to increase brown fat production.
Though it is helpful to increase brown fat, some scientists think they will learn how to keep stores of brown fat as large and active throughout adulthood as its stores are in infancy. ____20____.
    A. You can build fat from the food you eat.
    B. We lose most of our brown fat as we age.
    C. It turns out there’s good and bad fat, too.
    D. It’s wise to distinguish good fat from bad fat.
    E. But white fat is considered to do the opposite.
    F. These methods oppose taking in extra calories.
    G. The goal is to maintain brown fat rather than recreate it.
C 17. B 18. E 19. A 20. G

根据上文“We all know there’s good cholesterol (胆固醇) and bad cholesterol. (我们都知道有好胆固醇和坏胆固醇。)”和下文“Good fat is medically known as “brown fat”, typically found in the neck and shoulders of newborns. (好脂肪在医学上被称为“棕色脂肪”,通常存在于新生儿的颈部和肩部。)”可知,接下来要说明脂肪也有好的和坏的。选项C“事实证明,脂肪也有好的和坏的。”和上下文意思一致。故选C。
    【17题详解】
根据上文“It makes up about 5 percent of an infant’s total body mass. (它约占婴儿总体重的5%。)”和下文“By age six, we have less than 5 percent of the brown fat we were born with. (到六岁时,我们的棕色脂肪还不到我们出生时的5%。)”可知,随着年龄的增长,我们会失去很多棕色脂肪。选项B“随着年龄的增长,我们失去了大部分棕色脂肪。”和上下文意思一致。故选B。
    【18题详解】

Natalie was eleven years old. She lived with her family in a village in Kerala. Her family did not live right in the village, but on the outskirts of the village. This was because her father was a mahout.
One of the first commands an elephant learns is to kneel down and allow the mahout to sit atop it. From that moment on, the elephant obeys every command its master will give it. The mahout commands the animal with gentle prods and with words of encouragement. Natalie never stopped being amazed at how such a huge animal would obey a man who was physically so much smaller than it.
Natalie loved going with her father into the jungle. Here, huge trees were cut down and transported to sawmills. But it was not easy for vehicles to move about in the thick forests. This was where the elephants came in handy. They were so strong that they could move many tree trunks at a time.
Natalie wished she didn't have to go to school every day. She was happiest when there was a holiday. Then she would help to bathe and feed the elephant. She would sit atop with her father, and, in her childish but firm voice, she would give commands to the elephant like her father. But no elephant obeyed her.Her father often encouraged her,"What you need is patience!”
One dayafter Natalie had finished her homework and put books into her backpack, she noticed that her father had not yet returned from the forest with the elephant. He was usually coming back before sunset. Natalie was so worried that she went in search of her father.

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After a while, she saw the elephant in the middle of the forest without her father. Her heart pounding rapidly, Natalie dashed to the elephant, hoping that it could lead her to her father.Hard as she tried several times, she still couldn't make the elephant obey her command. As the sky gradually darkened, she was getting impatient and feeling at a loss. However, at the thought of her father, she decided to try again with more patience, giving the elephant more gentle prods and words of encouragement. Through her constant efforts, the elephant ultimately knelt down and allowed her to sit atop it.
Finally, the elephant led Natalie to her father with her atop. Seeing her father safe and sound, she was wild with joy. Hardly had she jumped down when she hugged her father tightly and she couldn't wait to tell him what had happened. After hearing the whole story, her father patted her on the back and beamed,"My girl, you finally made it! You'll definitely turn good mahout." It was not until then that Natalie realized her father arranged everything.A sense of pride swept over Natalie."I remember what you told me-Be patient." said Natalie, smiles flickering on her face.
