During the time of lockdown,a great way to manage boredom is to read. If you don’t want to buy books, I personally use Libby(or overdrive.com)to connect to the public library’s entire e-book and audio-book database. Here is my take on a well-rounded, diverse, and boredom-curing reading list:
    SALT TO THE SEA
    by Ruta Sepetys
This is a young-adult historical fiction about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945.The story is from the point of view of four refugees(难民)from different countries, all Keeping life-threatening secrets and struggling to escape to freedom.
    AND THEN THERE WERE NO
    by Agatha Christie
One of the best murder mysteries of all time.10 strangers are invited to a remote island by a secret person and are murdered one-by-one mirroring a nursery rhyme. You absolutely have no idea who the real killer is.
    EDUCATED
    by Tara Westover
Completely isolated from society, Westover spent her young life living in a remote mountainous area where no one would ensure the children to receive an education. But Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her and ultimately, she was accepted to Harvard and Cambridge University. Her story of fulfilling transformation of life is inspiring and may be exactly what you’re looking for.
    THE DIVINERS
    by Libba Bray
This is a young-adult fantasy that follows a group of teens with powers in the 1920s in New York City. When Evie stays with her uncle,a string of murders occur. We follow each character as they find their powers and find out who’s killing people. The book is a little long, but the twists, the 1920s slang, and the diverse and layered characters make it worthwhile.
    1. What is the advantage of Libby according to the writer?
    A. It provides information on boredom.
    B. It recommends ways to search online.
    C. It shares some writers’ personal book lists.

    B
I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.
    4. How did the writer first respond to Paul's travel plan?
    A. Scared. B. Puzzled. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
    5. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2?
    A. He was a western journalist. B. He had a knowledge of China.
    C. He came to China several times. D. He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.
    6. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?
    A. They honored the ancestors. B. They set off in high spirits.
    C. They satisfied the locals' curiosity. D. They built bonds with people.
    7. What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?
    A. To share and reflect on a journey. B. To suggest a new way of travel.
    C. To advocate protection of biodiversity. D. To introduce and promote Chinese culture.
D 5. B 6. D 7. A

故选A。
    C
Look up over the white sand beaches of Mauritius and you may see a huge sail. It’s much like the kind used by kite surfers but the size of a three-bedroom apartment. The sail isn’t a tourist attraction — it’s creating electricity for this island off the east coast of Africa.
Launched in December 2021 by SkySails Power, the massive wing is the world’s first fully autonomous commercial “airborne wind energy”system. For the past two months, it has been delivering a little under its goal of 100 kilowatts — typically enough to power up to 50 homes.
To harvest wind energy from the heights where wind blows fastest, the key may be to fly a kite. These systems come in container and can be dropped off wherever there’s a road or dock (码头). They can also be tied to a fixed ship in deep waters.
Their height is adaptable, so they can be moved up or down to wherever the wind blows the hardest, which often changes with the seasons.
SkySails actually started back in 2001 with a different purpose: building soft kite wings to pull massive ships along at sea. In 2015 SkySails shifted focus to producing electricity with SkySails Power.
SkySails’ system relies on a roughly 150 square metre wing to ride on the wind. There are no turbines (涡轮机) up in the air, and the line isn’t an electric wire. Instead, the energy is generated on the ground, from the pull on the line. “The brake on the winch (绞车) is generating the electricity, “says Fagiano, the chief officer. Software flies the kite autonomously in a figure-of-eight pattern to get the strongest pull possible to produce energy. The system then changes the wing’s flight pattern so it can be pulled in with minimal resistance, expending a little energy to wind it back. This pattern repeats, creating far more energy than it consumes.
The sails have less impact on the skyline than traditional turbines and are quieter too, says Fagiano. And they make economic sense for anyone currently paying more than $0.30 per kilowatt hour from traditional generators.
    8. What is the most effective way for the system to get energy?
    A. It is placed as high as possible.
    B. It is tied to ship in the deep sea.
    C. It is adjusted to the hardest winds.
    D. It is fixed on the white sand beaches.
    9. What is SkySails’ original intention to develop the system?
    A. To beat traditional turbines.
    B. To power the homes in need.
    C. To pull the huge ships at sea.
    D. To compete with other companies.
    10. What does paragraph 6 focus on?
    A. Why turbines are abandoned.
    B. How the SkySails’ system works.
    C. How software controls the wing.
    D. Why the wing changes its flight pattern.
    11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. SkySails: Pioneer in generating power
B SkySails: Competitor to traditional power
    C. The sails seeking the world’s surest winds
    D. The sails generating the cheapest electricity
C 9. C 10. B 11. B
根据第四段“Their height is adaptable, so they can be moved up or down to wherever the wind blows the hardest, which often changes with the seasons.(它们的高度是可适应的,所以它们可以向上或向下移动到风最猛烈的地方,这通常会随着季节的变化而变化。)”
根据第五段第一句“SkySails actually started back in 2001 with a different purpose: building soft kite wings to pull massive ships along at sea.(SkySails实际上早在2001年就有了不同的目的:制造柔软的风筝翅膀,在海上牵引大型船只。)”
根据第六段第一句“SkySails’ system relies on a roughly 150 square metre wing to ride on the wind.(SkySails的系统依靠大约150平方米的翅膀来随风飞行。)”和最后两句“The system then changes the wing’s flight pattern so it can be pulled in with minimal resistance, expending a little energy to wind it back. This pattern repeats, creating far more energy than it consumes.(然后,该系统改变翅膀的飞行模式,使其能够以最小的阻力被拉入,并消耗一点能量将其绕回。这种模式不断重复,产生的能量远远超过消耗的能量。)”可知,第六段主要介绍SkySails的系统是如何工作的。故选B。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The sails have less impact on the skyline than traditional turbines and are quieter too, says Fagiano. And they make economic sense for anyone currently paying more than $0.30 per kilowatt hour from traditional generators.(法吉亚诺说,与传统涡轮机相比,风帆对天际线的影响更小,而且更安静。而且,对于目前从传统发电机每千瓦时支付超过0.30美元的人来说,它们具有经济意义。)”可知,SkySails系统提供更便宜经济的电力,对传统发电产生挑战。故选B。
    D
Have you ever been in mid-conversation with someone, when you look over and find them standing in the same position as you or holding the same facial expression? It may seem like they have consciously (有意识地) copied you, but it is much more likely that it is the chameleon (变色龙) effect at play.
The chameleon effect is the unconscious imitation (模仿) of another person’s gestures or behaviour. Just as a chameleon attempts to match any environment’s colours, people acquire the behaviour of others to bring them closer together and help make their interactions smooth.
The chameleon effect was confirmed in an experiment by psychologists John Bargh and Tanya Chartrand in 1999. The first part of their experiment included 78 people, who each spoke with an experimenter. During the test, Bargh and Chartrand studied whether participants would copy the actions of someone they hadn’t met before, like moving the foot and touching the face. The second part measured the impact that copying someone has on the person being imitated.
In the first stage, participants increased their face touching by 20% and their foot movement by 50% while in conversation about a photograph with the experimenter. The individuals weren’t aware of what they were being studied for, and the photograph was used to catch their attention to ensure unconscious acts. The second stage involved half of the participants being copied, and then rating the likeability of the experimenter. The results showed that those who were imitated scored the experimenter higher. It has shown that when someone copies our behaviour, we develop more positive feelings about them. These interactions could be a person unconsciously willing to be liked, and forming a moment of connection.
The main reasons behind humans’ imitation are positive. However, when people carry this chameleon effect to the extreme, they can lose their sense of self. Those who change their entire personalities in different groups often go undetected. But more common signs of the chameleon effect are easier to notice. Next time you are in a social gathering, take a look around and you might just see some chameleons for yourself.
    12. Why do people acquire others’ behavior?
    A. To match the environment’s colour.
    B. To attract others’ attention.
    C. To establish a connection with others.
    D. To adapt to the surroundings.
    13. How did the experimenter guarantee participants’ unconscious behaviors?
    A. By directing their attention to a photo.
    B. By keeping an eye on their actions.
    C. By telling them the purpose of the study.
    D. By evaluating the impacts of imitation.
    14. What conclusion can be drawn from the experiment?
A People tend to like those who imitate their behavior.
    B. Too much of the chameleon effect can be beneficial.
    C. People imitating others are not easy to be detected.
    D. The copied movements help people to feel relaxed.
    15. Which of the following shows the chameleon effect according to the passage?
    A. Students adopt teachers’ accents for fun after class.
    B. People change their habits to please others on purpose.
    C. A comedian copies a celebrity vividly on stage.
    D. A husband and his wife share similar behaviours over time.
C 13. A 14. A 15. D

根据第二段“The chameleon effect is the unconscious imitation (模仿) of another person’s gestures or behaviour. Just as a chameleon attempts to match any environment’s colours, people acquire the behaviour of others to bring them closer together and help make their interactions smooth. (变色龙效应是指无意识地模仿他人的手势或行为。就像变色龙试图与任何环境的颜色相匹配一样,人们通过习得他人的行为来拉近彼此之间的距离,帮助他们顺畅地互动。)”可知人们为了与他人建立联系,会习得他人的行为。故选C。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In the first stage, participants increased their face touching by 20% and their foot movement by 50% while in conversation about a photograph with the experimenter. The individuals weren’t aware of what they were being studied for, and the photograph was used to catch their attention to ensure unconscious acts. (在第一阶段,参与者在与实验者谈论一张照片时,触摸脸部的次数增加了20%,脚的动作增加了50%。这些人并不知道他们被研究的目的是什么,照片被用来吸引他们的注意力,以确保他们无意识的行为。)”可知实验者用一张照片吸引参与者的注意力来保证他们的无意识行为,故选A。
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“It has shown that when someone copies our behaviour, we develop more positive feelings about them. These interactions could be a person unconsciously willing to be liked, and forming a moment of connection. (研究表明,当有人模仿我们的行为时,我们会对他们产生更积极的感觉。这些互动可能是一个人无意识地愿意被喜欢,并形成了一个连接的时刻。)”可推断出实验表明人们倾向于喜欢模仿自己行为的人。故选A。
根据第二段“The chameleon effect is the unconscious imitation (模仿) of another person’s gestures or behaviour. Just as a chameleon attempts to match any environment’s colours, people acquire the behaviour of others to bring them closer together and help make their interactions smooth. (变色龙效应是指无意识地模仿他人的手势或行为。就像变色龙试图与任何环境的颜色相匹配一样,人们通过习得他人的行为来拉近彼此之间的距离,帮助他们顺畅地互动。)”可知随着时间的推移,丈夫和妻子有相似的行为是变色龙行为,是因为他们经常在一起相处无意识的互相模仿,故选D。

Technology is here to stay. ___16___. However, they are often unsure on how to help children use technology responsibly and keep a balance between online and offline time. Here are some tips.
    Have a device contract
Having a device usage contract allows parents and children to work through what responsible technology usage looks like in your family and ensure that everyone is aware. ___17___. Kids are more likely to make sense of the reasons you have for restriction.
    ___18___
Although this tip seems like common sense, it is often difficult due to the demand of work and the expectation of being constantly connected. Encourage non-tech activities
One great way to keep kids off their screens is to ensure that they have other activities to fill their time. ___19___. These activities are also great ways to help children to develop their social skills and confidence.
    Tech-free family time
Once a week, pencil-in a “tech-free family time” in your schedule. It can be a meal or trip. To help increase the success of outings, try designing special activities, i. e., going to the beach to build a sand castle that looks the same as a photo you have found online. ___20___
    A. Model good technology use
    B. Communicate with children
    C. A little extra planning goes a long way
    D. The contract is helpful to the settlement of conflicts
    E. Parents are seeing more technology in their homes and jobs
    F. Also, drafting the contract together promotes understanding
    G. This can come in a variety of forms: soccer, fencing and more

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano? I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I’ m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
    ①表演:perform /show
    ②.宣布:announce /declare
    ①.尴尬:embarrassment /awkward
②.紧张的:nervous /intense/ be on pins and needles
