In 1985, Tommy Burrell inherited(继承)a piece of land in West Sussex, England, which is 3500 acres. It had been in his family for more than 200 years. As it was a failing farm, he and his wife Isabella Tree, were all set to run a traditional farm, but soon realized the costs far outweighed the profits. The land wasn’t suitable for growing crops anymore.
So, in 2001, the couple decided to try something else-an experiment in “rewilding”, or restoring environments to their natural state. They reintroduced native species, including Tamworth pigs, Exmoor ponies, longhorn cattle, and deer. Then they took out all the fences and let the animals wander freely.
In the following years, the land went through an incredible change. The once neat fields were covered with bushes, creating habitats where new plant and animal species could grow.
Now it’s home to many different creatures, including two rare species of bats, nightingales, peregrine falcons, white storks, and even turtle doves, whose numbers have dropped by 98 percent in the U. K. over the last few decades!
“We were living in a biological desert. Now, ecologists are blown away all the time by just the amount of life here,”Isabella said. “It shows the potential that this kind of project has for changing trends of biodiversity decline.”
What’s more, the land is now profitable! Tommy and Isabella offer multiple services there, including walking tours, safaris, photography classes, and rewilding workshops. They also sell meat to control their large animal populations, and even allow visitors to spend a night outside in the tents they set up.
What a promising outcome! This is amazing news for conservationists and shows that our planet can be returned to its natural glory, if only we let it. Now, it’s a beautiful reminder of how ecosystems can be restored by letting Mother Nature take the control.
24. What did the couple do with the land?
A. They planted trees on it. B. They raised animals on it.
C. They restored it to its natural state. D. They transformed it into a traditional farm.
25. What does the underlined phrase “blown away” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Amused. B. Impressed. C. Disappointed. D. Confused.
26. Which is one of the ways the couple make profits?
A. Selling tents to tourists. B. Selling what they grow on the land.
C. Killing animals and selling the meat. D. Drawing rare animals and selling the pictures.
27. What can be inferred about the couple?
A. They have creative ideas. B. They succeeded through hard labor.
C. They are too lazy to manage a farm. D. They care more about money than the ecosystem.
C
While new phones are advertised as “water resistant(防水)”, this doesn’t mean they are waterproof, or totally immune to water. Water resistance just implies the device can handle some exposure to water before substantial damage occurs.
The water resistance of phones is rated by an “ingress(进入)protection” code, commonly called an IP rating. The rating includes two numbers. The first demonstrates protection against solids such as dust, while the second indicates resistance to liquids, specifically water, a phone that has a rating of IP68 has a solid object protection of 6 (full protection from dust, dirt and sand) and a liquid protection of 8 (protected from immersion in water to a depth of more than one metre).
The popular iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S21 phones both have a rating of IP68. However, regarding exposure to water, the iPhone 12 has a permissible immersion depth of a maximum of 6m for 30 minutes whereas the Galaxy 2l’s immersion limit is up to 1.5m, also for 30 minutes.
While IP ratings indicate the water-resistant nature of phones, taking most phones for a swim will land you in deep trouble. The salt content in oceans and swimming pools can corrode(腐蚀)our device and cost you a heavy replacement.
Then how to fix a water-logged phone? Follow these steps: First, turn off the device immediately and don’t press any buttons, then wipe the phone dry with paper towels or a soft cloth and gently shake the device to remove water from the charging ports. Next, remove the SIM card and dry out the phone in front of a fan. Do not charge the phone until you are certain it’s dry.
If the above steps don’t help and you’re still stuck with a seemingly dead device, don’t try opening the phone yourself. You’re better off taking it to a professional.
28. What can you infer from Para. 2?
A. The water resistance of phones is evaluated by an IP rating.
B. The rating is made up of several numbers.
C. The first IP rating number indicates resistance to liquids.
D. A phone with a rating of EP68 has a solid protection of 8.
29. What does the underlined word in Para. 4 refer to?
A. Things are not made by people. B. The way that things happen.
C. The way of an act of a person. D. The basic qualities of a thing.
30. What should we first do with a water-logged phone?
A. We should pick it up from the water. B. We should switch it off and don’t use it.
C. We should ask a professional for help. D. We should wipe it dry with paper towels or a soft cloth.
31. what is the passage mainly about?
A. It focuses on the meaning of IP rating.
B. It is mainly about the water resistance of a phone.
C. It is about the IP rating and solutions to a water-logged phone.
D. It mainly deals with the classification of water resistance phones.
D
The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollurion and micro-fibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic(合成的)clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, micro fibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution”. Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design—his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.
32. What has happened during the past five years?
A. Fabric has become much stronger. B. Plastic pollution has been less serious.
C. Microfibers have been greatly improved. D. Many plastic bottles have been reused.
33. What docs Browne think of washing synthetic clothes?
A. It is worsening environmental problems. B. It is adding microfibers to the clothes.
C. It is making synthetic clothes last longer. D. It is doing great damage to washing machines.
34. What can be inferred about Browne’s Benign by Design research project?
A. It has achieved great success. B. It hasn’t got anything done.
C. It is facing some difficulties. D. It is known to very few people.
35. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A novel. B. A magazine. C. A diary. D. A guidebook.

The Ways to Help You Stand out in Interviews
Interview preparation has always been one of the most overlooked areas in the employment process. Perhaps you have done all your preparation and visited the company’s website so many times that you know it by heart. 36 Here are some ways to make you stand out.
Leave a positive impression.
37 Once you are inside the room, the main thing to remember is that you need to make eye contact, shake hands confidently and also smile.
Don’t control the conversation.
Someone has remarked, the interview is a dialog. 38 You need to find out how do interviewers view the company and what their goals are. Those can often guide you when you answer their questions.
39
They always ask your greatest weakness. If you don’t respond to them directly, then nobody will believe you. What they want to know is what you learned from a failure. Talk about the strategies to overcome any weakness so that it is always part of your development.
Show your passion and energy.
Most candidates range from being shy to showing off. But what will really make you stand out is your ability to actually convey the passion and the energy to various parts of your work. Yes, you can be modest about these but show that these are steps on the ladder. 40
A. Be frank about your weaknesses.
B. First impression is very important.
C. Be positive about your work experience.
D. But how do you actually do in interviews to get the job?
E. Whatever you do, do not talk too much and lead the interview.
F. These opportunities may come up during the interview, rather than at the end.
G. A great way to stand out is to show confidence, energy and passion for the job.

The Uncommon Professional
Another long and tiring day! I went to the dark end of the shelves, pressed my forehead against the wall and buried myself in a few moments of quiet 41 . Was this the way it would be for the rest of my life? Here I was, two years out of school, working at yet another 42 , low-pay, dead-end job.

Health Matters Most
With College Entrance Examination approaching, many of us are under much pressure from study and therefore have developed an unhealthy lifestyle—studying deep into night, rushing through meals and taking little physical exercise, which is extremely harmful to our health.
To meet the challenges of the senior year, it’s high time that we took action to say no to the unhealthy lifestyle. Not only are we supposed to go to bed early and get up early, but also take meals regularly and slowly enough. Furthermore, it is advised that we spare as much time as possible to work out. If we are able to make exercising our life habit, we will surely benefit from it both physically and mentally.
