I am Sadie. I love oceans, especially the one near my grandma's house with beautiful shells. Why? That's what I am about to tell you.
It all started when my parents divorced a few weeks ago. I had remained silent since then. So my mother decided to send me to Florida to live with my grandma.
On the way to my grandma’s house, my mother said, “Sadie, I know we are not the best family you can have and I truly apologize. I just do not know how to be a mother. But remember, Sadie, whatever happened, I do love you." These words made me sadder.
When we arrived, Grandma told me to go upstairs and unpack my things while she spoke to my mother. When I saw a blue and green painted room with a huge window and a comfortable bed, I thought, Moving to Florida might not be that bad." I comforted my-self as I walked towards the window. I opened the curtains and saw sky-blue waves slowly washing away the sand on the beach and sea birds flying in the clear sky. The ocean was only a few hundred meters away from here.
After my mother left, Grandma softly touched my shoulder, “I want to take you to the place I called 'the Big Blue’. And I think you might like it." (I guess you could know where it is.)
Before I stepped on the sand I could smell the ocean. Together we enjoyed the sunset with a whole lot of yellow and orange. Suddenly she picked out the most beautiful shell I had ever seen in my life. It was almost gold, shining in the sunlight. I couldn’t move my eyes off it.

    2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My family immigrated to Canada when I was about one year old. In those early years, we did not have much money. Our home was a simple rented apartment, which was rather poorly furnished. There certainly was not enough money for expensive outings. As a result, our weekends were filled with simple pleasures that we could do for free, like picnics, bike rides, and my favorite—trips to the library.
Thanks to the library’s children’s section, I fell in love with stories—silly ones, moving ones, and even educational ones. I would have my parents read the books that we borrowed over and over again until we needed to return them, or I would page through them myself, imagining the stories in my head, even though I was too young to read the words.
When I was about five years old and finally started to read on my own, I had a curious thought: I knew we could get books from the library or buy them in store s if we had the money, but where did books come from?
I asked my mother this question, to which she replied that the stories I loved were created in the imaginations of people called “writers” These people then wrote them down so they could be s hared with others.
Four decades later, I still remember that moment. It was as though I had been struck by lightning. Then and there, I knew my purpose in this world. I would be one of those writers. I would create stories and share them with the world.

    3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my siblings and me only once. Instead, she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four.
In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at daycare I watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner?” The mother replied, “Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go.” “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow.” Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald’s.”
No amount of pleading (恳求) or scolding, her mother tried stopped Susie’s tantrum (发脾气). Finally her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald’s.” Susie stopped yelling and smiling she grabbed her mother’s hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate; I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum.
That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone?”
She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you.” “But Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.”

    4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle(跨栏) and...” Cheers broke out.
“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls' 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.
“County championships(锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes(钉鞋). They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.
“Don't forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before. And it wasn't long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!
The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.
“Jobie!” Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”
Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed(猛冲) toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.
Jobie couldn't get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes.

Six decade years ago, a 13-year-old boy saw a beautiful hairpin (发夹) in a shop window which set his heart racing. But the price-five dollars-was too high for Jack, Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Jack couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora, Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never- ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his shabby shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time? ”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on such things. It should be kept for a while.”
Jack respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that hairpin. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Jack suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Jack knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

    Kindness
The sound of glass breaking is immediately recognizable: I'd been telling my best friend Missi a story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the floor, it was covered with tiny colorful glass. Missi said, "Oh, no, not the vase."
"Why? What did I do?" My face reddened.
"Abby, that glass vase was one of the few things my grandparents brought when they came to America," Missi replied nervously. "If you'd broken anything else in the apartment, I would've gladly said I did it. But you're going to have to tell my mom that it was your mistake, and she's going to be really mad."
    I was frightened.
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missis said it didn't look possible. Some of the pieces broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home by six. Would her mom shout at me or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn't stay in their apartment for the weekend? The only thing I could think of to say was "I'm sorry."
A couple of minutes after six we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home.
Right from the start, we could see she was very happy. "Hello! It's hot today. I want to treat you girls to the Chinese dishes I know you like. Let's go!" her mom said. She pointed at the open door.
"But before that, I need to tell you something," I said.
"We can talk when we arrive at the restaurant," her mom said.
"No, I need to tell you now. It's important," I said. I could feel my voice shaking and tried not to cry.
"What is it, dear?" her mom asked. She closed the door and walked closer to me. Our hands almost touched. I could feel her eyes study me, and she watched me quietly. My heart beat faster. I gathered my courage and told her the whole story and my wish to fix the vase if possible.

One hot summer day, dressed up in two pigtails, I was sitting on my porch (门廊), happily eating tasty ice cream when my daddy pulled up in my uncle’s big black truck. My dad and uncle got off the truck and from it my uncle took out a pretty pink bike. My uncle must have spotted me staring at the pretty pink bike and shouted out, “Mary, this isn’t for you,” Hearing this, I got mad and stormed off before he could say anything else.
Wandering aimlessly in the park nearby my home, I came across my best friend Kate, who was riding her pretty purple bike. “What’s wrong with you?” Kate sensed something and asked me with concern. “You have a pretty purple bike and I don’t,” I said in a low voice, tears in my eyes, feeling envious. “Well, ask your daddy to buy you one,” Kate said loudly, as usual.
“My uncle walked into the house with one but said it wasn’t for me,” I said angrily. “Well, maybe he was just kidding. That’s what my daddy did to me when he got me my own purple bike,” said Kate with a broad smile. “Well, I’m going to ask him,” I said, running off without even saying goodbye.
Meanwhile, my dad and uncle were in the house laughing at my reaction towards the bike. I walked up, asked eagerly, “Daddy, is that bike mine?” “Yeah, it’s yours. Your uncle was just making fun of you,” he said jokingly.
Grabbing the bike, Iran outside to try and ride it, but I couldn’t, because I didn’t know how. “Daddy, how can you give me a bike when I have no skills to ride it?” I said. “I thought you knew how to ride the bike,” my daddy said, laughing.

Probably, most of you had the feeling before, at least once—you had been waiting for a long time, yet being afraid of getting. It was exactly my state of mind before the first day at college. I had been working hard to pass the necessary tests and have my application to the undergraduate programme in management approved. And when the time had come for me to visit the college for the first day of the study,I couldn't sleep all night because of being anxious about how to look good physically in front of the whole new world I was about to enter. However, the positive attitude and readiness to accept support from others helped a lot in a new environment.
It was Monday morning. Being too excited to sleep the night before, I came to the college half an hour earlier for the first lecture and was walking nervously through the hallway. About 15 minutes after I came, the hallway started to be full of students. Professors who walked on their business probably didn't pay attention to me. I knew which hall to go to and had already checked that it was open. However,I was hesitant to enter the hall and sit there alone. People were moving around me as if they hadn't seen me. I felt disappointed with the fact that I had nobody to talk to in the new and seemingly unfriendly place.
Suddenly,a well-dressed man who seemed to be in his late twenties approached me. He introduced himself as Mathews and asked whether I was lost and whether he could help me with anything. In that situation,I realized it was very kind of him and that he was exactly the person I wanted to ask in my thoughts a minute before, but then I was too nervous for a friendly chat. As a result, instead of welcoming the opportunity to make the first acquaintance (相识), I told the man to mind his business and leave me alone since I was an adult capable of finding my class without anybody's assistance.

    1.Paragraph 1:
“Want to know how I get through my parents’ divorce?” Grandma asked. She smiled to me and continued, "In those days, I felt very sorrowful because neither of my parents cared about me, which made me want to end my life. But finally, I didn't do like that. In order to kill time, I always went to the beach (I called it 'the Big Blue’). Much to my surprise, I found that there were such beautiful shells on the beach”.
    Paragraph 2:
"The beautiful shells here gave me the courage to live on," Grandma said. "Honey, you are still happy. Although your parents divorced, they both love you. Your mother rang me this morning, telling me that you love oceans. Therefore, I brought you here. Also I hope you can get inspiration and courage." Hearing this I looked up at the blue sky and the vast sea. Suddenly, I felt a little relaxed and natural, and held the firm belief that I must cheer up, just like the most beautiful shell, full of color.

At first stunned, the others waiting in line began to clap, and before I knew it they were cheering and laughing and patting my mother on her back. As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in. Jobie picked up the pace, her heart pounding louder the closer she got. When she reached the place she'd left them, her heart sank. “My lucky spikes are gone!” she screamed. Jobie's teammates helped her search the whole park, but there was no sign of her lucky spikes. “So long, gold.” Jobie was hopeless, tears welling up in her eyes.
The next day, Jobie turned up in a new pair of spikes for the championships. Uneasily, Jobie shuffled her feet. For her, the loss of her lucky spikes meant the loss of the gold medal. “Next up is the girls' 100-meter hurdles,” said the announcer. Jobie took several deep breaths, and her teammates encouraged her as she walked down to the starting line. Feeling inspired, Jobie decided to try her best. In a flash, Jobie was off and cleared hurdle after hurdle. She got closer and closer, and cheers broke out. Wearing a wide smile, Jobie whispered, “No lucky spikes. Lucky me.”

Following my daddy, I pushed my pretty bike to the park, where kids gathered to admire it. “Be brave, my sweetie! I’m here,” daddy encouraged me, holding the backseat of the bike. Nervously, I got on the vehicle with only two wheels, not daring to move. Noticing my uneasiness, Dad said seriously, “The first step is the hardest, but after making the first move, you’ll win half the battle.”

Hearing this, I was filled with courage and pedaled (蹬车) hard. Holding the handlebars tightly, I was excited to find the bike beginning to move forward. Slowly and unsteadily, with my daddy following around, I practiced hard. Occasionally, I lost my balance and fell off the bike. However, encouraged by my daddy, I rose bravely and tried again. 10.Luckily, the man didn't seem to be angry. He just shrugged, smiled a bit and went to the room where my first lecture was about to take place. Quite a lot of people had entered the room, so I didn't care about having an unhappy experience with one of my future peers. I was embarrassed, however, when I finally learned that the man to whom I had been rude minutes before was our professor of the first lecture.

Professor Mathews turned out to be an excellent speaker and the lecture went really well. After the class was dismissed, I came to him to apologize for my bad manners earlier in the day. Professor Mathews said that he was not unhappy and on his first day as the student of our college, he was afraid and nervous, too. The incident helped me realize that I should not let emotional strain and anxiety prevent me from communicating with people openly and pleasantly.
