“What’s this — Ben is trying out for (参加试演) Mr. Zuckerman? What if he ruins the whole party? He’s never acted before.”
My ears burned at hearing my name. It was Lindsey, the most popular student in our school, talking to her friends. She would be playing Charlotte. Obviously, she had no idea that my locker was next to Mrs. Stevens’s room where the tryout schedule was posted.
Lindsey was right. I’d never been in a play. At lunch, with a heavy heart, I told my best friend Trevor that I’d changed my mind. I’d just be backstage (在后台). Trevor shook his head, but he didn’t try to shake my determination.
Rehearsal (排练) started, and I spent Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at school. It was fun to watch the actors from backstage. By the third week I’d learned everyone’s lines (台词).
And then, only two days before the performance, Josh, the student who was supposed to play Mr. Zuckerman, fell off his bike and broke his leg.
Mrs. Stevens called us together. “We can’t get someone ready in two days. We’ll have to put off the play,” she said sadly.
For once everyone was silent. Then I heard Trevor’s voice. “Ben can do it. He knows all the lines.”
    Suddenly, everyone looked at me.
Mrs. Stevens asked, “Is that right?”
    I nodded.
Lindsey spoke up, “Are you sure?”
I looked at her and spoke out Mr. Zuckerman’s longest line.
When I finished, everyone clapped (鼓掌). Mrs. Stevens said, “All right, Ben, you’ve saved the show. That’s all for today. Ben, Lindsey — can you stay?”
Mrs. Stevens started and directed us on the first act, and then the second. Sometimes I spoke my lines too quickly; sometimes my movements were too awkward. It seemed as if my performance was far from satisfactory.
The next day, Mrs. Stevens helped me during lunch. She taught me how to take control of my voice and take deep breaths so that I’d stay relaxed onstage. I could tell she was worried.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it was opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while, “Would you please give me some...a drink of water?” the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give an effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

One day, Dad took Tim and Lily to the supermarket. “Now where has Tim gone? ” asked Dad. Lily shrugged. Keeping track of Tim was not on her agenda today. She’d been trying to decide on the perfect gift for Dad’s upcoming birthday. This year, she was determined to prepare a present that couldn’t be bought at a store or ordered online.
“Daddy!” Tim appeared out of nowhere, disturbing Lily’s thoughts. He yelled, holding a cereal (麦片) box in the air, “Let’s get it! It’s nutritious and delicious! And it has a dragon inside! ” Tim remembered Dad saying that when he was a kid, almost every box of cereal came with a toy. Ever since, Tim was certain that he, too, would find a toy in the next box.
When they got home, Dad and Lily began putting away the groceries. Tim couldn’t wait to take the box of cereal upstairs to his room. By the time they finished, Lily could hear Tim shouting. “No! No!” Tim’s voice kept getting louder and louder. Lily imagined each word as the sound of a hammer striking metal. Then she raced towards her brother’s room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a crunch (嘎吱声) beneath her feet. It was obvious that Tim dumped all that cereal looking for a toy dragon. “They lied! No dragon. Just a picture on the box.” Tim sounded close to tears. Annoyed as Lily was, she said quietly, “Let’s see what the box says.” “I don’t know how to read.” her brother said in a low voice.
It reminded Lily that last school year, Tim’s teacher who sent home easy-to-read books and worksheets insisted that he was ready to learn to read and just needed some extra help, but Tim complained about books “for babies” and “boring” homework assignments. It was really a headache for Dad to teach Tim to read! At the thought of these, it seemed that Tim’s dragon issue had swept away her concern for a present for Dad.

    A Real Hero
Mindy had a pet dog. She took him for a walk every day. Usually she took him to a park near her house. The park was next to a river. Many people took their dogs there. Almost all the dog owners knew each other. They often stopped and had a talk.
For Mindy, it had been a happy place until a homeless man moved into the park. He usually slept under a tree near the river. He was very dirty. He had no teeth, and his clothes were old. He even sometimes talked to himself. Mindy was a bit frightened. When she went to the park, she tried to stay close to other dog walkers. She was unwilling to meet the scary man.
Then winter came and it was cold and wet in the park. The homeless man didn’t have warm clothes and seemed as if he couldn’t bear to go through the winter.
One morning when Mindy was walking in the park, she encountered the homeless man again. To Mindy’s surprise, he was wearing a warm yellow hat that was quite new and clean. He walked towards her, smiling and pointing at his hat. Mindy was so scared that she ran as quickly as she could. “Mindy!” one of the dog walkers called out to her. It was Alison. Mindy ran towards her.
“Mindy! He is harmless! He won’t hurt you! He just wants to show you his new hat! He is so happy,” explained Alison. But Mindy still felt bad. “I’m sorry, but where did he get the hat?” Mindy asked. “I bought it for him. I saw it in the $2 shop. It is so cold and he is so poor. I wanted to do something for him,” answered Alison. “It’s very kind of you,” said Mindy with a smile.
Over the following few days the weather became even worse. It rained all day and all night, Mindy didn’t want to enter the park. Though she felt OK, she was still afraid of the homeless man. So she just took her dog for a walk along the streets outside the park instead.

Andy rode slowly on his way to school, daydreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the sky. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm (一大群) of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and they seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding with great speed but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings (蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to lie in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father’s words came to him. “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it.”
On a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson’s home. “Bees don’t like smoke,” he thought. “They couldn’t get into the house.” Andy raced towards the Nelson’s house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon. But he tried his best to keep calm so that he could come up with an idea to escape from the dangerous situation. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam which was often used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden.

    6.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.

    7.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When I was about six years old, my family and I went to Disneyland one weekend and had a wonderful day full of excitement. Little did I know that the real excitement wasn’t to begin until that night.
While we watched the fireworks, I began to get an urge to go to the restroom, but I didn’t want to miss the show. I overheard my sister Isabel talking to my mom, and I got closer to them to hear what they were talking about.
“Mom, I’m going to the bathroom with Lizette, okay?” said Isabel.
“Okay,” my mom replied, “but stay together. I don’t want any of you getting lost. ”
The second I saw my sisters leaving, I didn’t think twice before running after them—without telling my parents. As I followed them through the huge crowd of people, I started to lose sight of them. I began to panic as I scanned the crowd for them. Crazy thoughts ran through my head like “What if I never see my family again?”
I gave up trying to find my sisters and tried to get back to my family, but I was completely mixed up. After searching for what seemed like forever, I couldn’t hold back my tears, and I started crying like I had never cried before.
“Mommy!” I cried out. But everyone around me was too caught up by the fireworks to pay any attention to me.
I tried to stop the scary thoughts that were going through my head and started running as fast as I could...anywhere...everywhere. I was going crazy. I’m only six, and I’ve gotten lost. “What have I done? How could I have been so dumb to run off without telling anyone?” I thought.
With my face wet from tears, I kept running, pulling at people’s pants and crying, “Mommy!” I was hoping, wishing, that one of these adults would be one of my parents.

    8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Katie had always felt like she never connected with anyone. There was no one she considered a friend. So, when her parents decided to move, she was okay with it. She didn't feel sad because she wasn't leaving anyone behind. She was eight when they moved to a new town. It wasn't that different from where they had lived before. There were a lot of trees and kids running around outside, riding bikes, and playing. One day her mother caught her staring out the window at some kids playing. Her mom told her to go out and play with those kids. So Katie went out. She could see that they were all having fun and she wanted to join in but she was afraid. She tried to muster up the courage to ask them if she could join them but she just couldn't do it.
She decided to go for a walk instead. She liked how peaceful the town was. The people seemed nice and polite. Her stroll finally led her to the town's lake. She felt the rush of cold air hitting her face. The beauty of the lake was something to behold. She sat there admiring it and decided that this would be her place. She would come here every day and maybe one day, she would bring her friends here.
After school, she always stopped by the lake before going home. She swore she could stay there for hours, maybe even live there. If she ever got hungry, she always had food ready in her bag.
One day when she was writing a poem about the lake, she heard her stomach growl. She put down her notebook and her pen and got her sandwich out. She was about to take a bite when she heard a noise. This alarmed her. She hadn't heard or seen anything strange before. She looked around and suddenly she noticed that there was something black moving toward the bank.
“A swimming black dog!” Katie cried out in surprise. First she felt a little frightened, because the dog was huge and wet. Then she tried to calm herself and guessed that “maybe it is just hungry.” So she offered her sandwich to the dog. After finishing its meal, the dog walked up to her and sat down beside her. She bravely reached out her hand to touch its head and introduced herself to it. The dog nodded as if to say “Nice to meet you, Katie.” From then on, Katie and the dog became friends.

The prize may go to the fastest, but sometimes, the first one to cross the finish line isn’t the only winner. Nowhere was that more true than at a recent 5K invitational (邀请赛) in Shelbyville, Indiana.
There were two players in the match: Levi LaGrange and Axel Aleman, who hadn’t known each other before. Levi LaGrange, an 18-year-old student from Western Boone High School, has been expecting to be a professional sportsman for many years. Axel Aleman, who is from Sheridan High School, is a friendly and generous person and he is always more concerned about others than himself. Axel once said to his classmates, “When you are standing at a crossroad, you can choose the path of self-interest, or you can go the extra mile for someone in need. As a teen athlete, the choice is extremely clear.”
The game went very well at first. However, with less than half a mile to go, Levi LaGrange slipped, twisting his ankle. He said, “I was running up the little rolling hill and I hurt my ankle. I felt something was wrong with my ankle.”
Levi stopped and signed to Axel to pass him. Generally, winning a match should be the mission for a sportsman, But at that moment, the race became a secondary concern for Axel. “I was able to see he was in a lot of pain,” Axel recalled. “As I got closer to him, he narrowly fell down. I asked if he was all right. He said he felt like something broken in his leg.”
Rather than running ahead, in an extraordinary act of true sportsmen, Axel refused to leave Levi behind. “As soon as I saw him, I knew I had to do something,” Axel said. “It just seemed like the right thing to do. That mattered more than the race. I told him I wasn’t going to leave. I wanted to help him finish the match.”

As I walked along the sidewalk in front of Surplus Unlimited, a car that was about to change my life had just turned onto Route 82 from the CVS parking lot. I looked up and noticed the elderly couple in the car heading toward me. As the car rolled past, the driver suddenly collapsed against the steering wheel (方向盘) right in front of my eyes. His wife stared blankly out of the passenger side window. She was unaware that her car was now rolling—without a conscious driver—down the center of a busy road.
I began to jog alongside the moving car. My mind assessed the situation. Somebody needed to stop that car!
I reached forward, but there was nothing to grab. I pounded on her window. She looked confused. “Roll down the window!” I yelled, gesturing wildly. With the window down, I was able to grab the doorframe. I pulled hard against the force of the moving vehicle. On the far side of the car, the traffic streamed by in the opposite direction. Cars passed one after another. Nobody slowed down. Nobody seemed to notice.
Thankfully, the driver’s foot must have slipped off the gas pedal (踏板) when he lost consciousness. I kept pulling, and the car began to slow.
Just then, a woman appeared from behind me. She ran alongside the driver side door. She opened the door and as the car was slowing, she managed to shift it out of “Drive”. A joyful “We did it!” feeling swept over me.
But the car was now stopped in the center lane (车道) with traffic still moving in both directions around us and we need to help this man. Quickly! The woman called 911 while I checked his vital signs. He was not breathing. He had no pulse. He had about five minutes until he was dead. CPR was needed in to time.

1.With so many students watching me at rehearsal, I forgot everything Mrs. Stevens had said. It seemed that my mind went blank. A wave of nervousness and anxiety swept over me. My heart pounding and my palms sweating, an inner voice told me that I had to stay calm. It was at that moment that I remembered what Mrs. Stevens had told me. Then I took a deep breath, gathered my courage and started acting my role. Gradually I became less anxious and my nervousness faded away. At one time I felt as if I was a superstar. I knew I made it, because at the end, Mrs. Stevens clapped, a big smile lighting up her face. Seeing this, I breathed a sigh of relief.
It was opening night, and I stood backstage, shaking with fear. After what seemed ages, the big moment came at last. “It is my stage and it is my show time!” I cheered myself on. Shaking off my fear, I walked onto the stage slowly but steadily. I performed with confidence and enjoyed every second on the stage. When the play came to an end, the audience burst into cheers, clapping their hands excitedly. I rushed backstage and hugged Mrs. Stevens tightly. “Thank you!” I said, with tears rolling down my cheeks.

Dad must be satisfied with such a special present!” Lily thought to herself, feeling a surge of excitement. She couldn’t wait to share it with Tim. Unexpectedly, he shook his head in disapproval. Aware that Tim was not confident with himself, Lily cast an encouraging look at him, saying, “I’ll help you, and I’m sure you’ll make it.” Tim nodded. In the following days, Lily taught him to read with great patience. Then, a new dragon story was born. Meanwhile, Tim also learned to read the story they made up.
After what seemed to be a century, Dad’s birthday finally came. They told Dad to sit in the middle of the couch. Lily stood in front of Dad while Tim stood behind her. “This is a present from both of us! A dragon story written by us!” Lily announced and she could feel Dad was in surprise. When it was Tim’s turn to read the story, he turned to the first page, reading slowly. Having finished, he caught sight of Dad wiping tears off his eyes. “This is the best birthday present I have ever received!” he said, holding both children in his arms. It was at that time that Tim seemed to have grown up.

Then he managed to pull the child on the back seat out of the car. He saved the little boy as well.

Without hesitation, Andy jumped off his bike and dived into the cool water. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mr. Nelson happened to be home and seeing the tired and wet boy, the owner took him inside. After knowing what Andy had experienced, he praised the boy and rang his mother.
In no time, his mother appeared in front of him. Seeing Andy, his mother anxiously asked whether he was injured. Andy answered it was the dam that saved him. His mother laughed with relief and said he really needed that fishing break to help him recover. But Andy did not hear her. He was thinking his father’s words “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic.” And he realized how important it was to listen to parents.

“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. “You just haven’t been ready for the stage performance.” Seeing the sadness on my face soften a little, she added, “Why not take the narrator’s part as an opportunity to be familiar with the stage?” Her encouragement calmed me down gradually, and I began to accept the narrator’s part was of vital significance. Soon it was the big day. At first I was still nervous, but then I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm.
    Paragraph 2
After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily at me. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I often recall our walk in the yard. Her smile and her words of wisdom have stayed with me and shaped me into who I am now! And this is perhaps the best gift that I’ve ever received in my life.

7.Luckily, I felt a pat on my shoulder and a gentle voice came, “Are you lost”? “Yeeesss!” I cried. It was a lady working at Disney. She picked me up and carried me through the crowd as she kept asking me where my parents had been standing. As I began to feel safe in the lady’s arms, I calmed down and thought for a few minutes. I remembered we had been leaning against a wooden fence. She carried me around the wooden fence, asking random people, “Is this your child?” “No. Sorry,” everyone kept saying. You’re sorry? Look at me. I’m looking for my mommy, I thought.
Finally, through the crowd of people, I recognized a face. I was so happy. “Mommy!” I shouted as I pointed toward her so the lady could carry me to her. When the lady put me down, I ran to my mom and gave her a huge hug. I couldn’t let go of her. I didn’t want to lose her again. As I cried in my mother’s arms, my family thanked the nice lady for everything she had done for me. For the rest of the evening and the entire next day, I was more concerned with making sure that my parents were within my sight at all times than I was with seeing the sights at Disneyland. I look back at these memories and laugh at myself, but to this day, I always make sure to tell someone where I am going before I run off.

Minutes later, Axel walked closer to Levi. Axel picked Levi up and encouraged him to hold on to the end. Placing an encouraging hand at his competitor’s back, Axel remained with Levi for the remainder of the race. They advanced side by side, with eyes looking at the finish line. They even sang a song to cheer each other up. Eventually, the two crossed the finish line within seconds of one another. Axel even made sure Levi went first. To their surprise, the event organizer announced that they were both winners together.
Axel gained a lot from the incident. In the following days, Axel received lots of positive comments now and then. While he might have enjoyed the praise for his kindness, for him, the best harvest was the friendship with Levi. We might not always recognize when life hands us an opportunity to help others, but when it really does, we should take action. Axel said, “I would just really hope people do the right thing.” Yes, we should do that, not for others, but for ourselves.

    10.      Thoughts started running through my mind. I needed to start CPR. But I couldn’t do CPR on a person who was sitting in a car. Did I remember how to do CPR? There was no way for us two women to lift this guy and carry him through this traffic to the side of the road. By the time an ambulance arrived, he would be dead. Just then, over my shoulder, I noticed a black SUV had pulled up behind us.
In an instant, the man from the black SUV was standing beside me and said. “I am a doctor” I stepped back. He confirmed that the man indeed had no pulse. He quickly carried the unconscious driver to the sidewalk with the help of the woman. I walked around to the passenger window to check on the elderly lady. Her hands were shaking wildly, tears in her eyes. She could only manage to whisper, “Will he be OK?” “I hope so,” I told her softly, as the doctor began CPR. And his breath recovered!
