Every time Jim crossed the street on his way to work, he would see a little girl selling flowers on the street. She sat by a large green board with the names of the flowers and their prices on it. Unfortunately, no one paid attention to her, and she rarely sold anything. Jim wanted to help her, and one day he got his chance. His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.
“Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses?” Jim said as he approached the girl.
The girl didn’t raise her head and just stared at the same spot on the ground. “I’m Cassy. Thank you for buying flowers from me,” she said. “Could you please select the flowers by yourself and give them to me? I will tie them together for you. I can’t see. ”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.
“Here,” she said, holding the bouquet. “That’ll be $5.”
“Thanks. They’re beautiful,” Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.
The next day, Jim went to work and he decided to have a quick talk with Cassy on the way. However, he didn’t see Cassy where she used to be that morning. He thought she might be late and decided to meet her the next day, but she didn’t show up for the next few days in a row (连续地).
Jim was concerned about Cassy, wondering if something bad had happened to Cassy. Surprisingly, he finally met Cassy again on the street with her flowers.
    Paragraph 1:
Jim was so delighted to see Cassy that he ran to her at once.

In order to add variety to our lives, a tug- of-war (拔河) competition was held by our school recently. Before the game, we were quite unsure of ourselves, as we had no significant advantage over our competitors. We even joked, “we’ll be satisfied just as long as we don’t get last place.”
Though we had no great ambitions, everyone looked forward to the game and took it pretty seriously. Right before the games started, our participants gathered together to discuss the right strategy, while the rest of us formed a cheer leading team.
Finally, the first match began. Fortunately, neither of the two competing classes were particularly strong rivals. Despite being tired, our first victory came smoother than expected. After that first success, we all gained some confidence. A day later in the semi-finals, we were determined to make it into the top two—and we did it!
The final game was the toughest. We faced off with the champions from the last game: Class 5. By the time we arrived at the playground, we were excited to discover, unlike the other classes, almost all of our teachers were there to cheer us on!
However, that excitement didn’t last very long. As we went up to compete with the class that had won with a score of 2:0, we were once more full of doubt - how could we possibly beat them?
The cheers of the crowd were deafening. The instant we heard the whistle, we fell back with all of our might and held onto the rope as tightly as we could. At first, it was unclear who had the advantage. It seemed like centuries, and we were suddenly amazed to find that the marker was slowly moving towards our side.

James Pemblington was dreaming of owning a grocery store though his family wasn’t rich. At a young age, he started to save money by doing odd jobs in his neighborhood. Then, he worked for a local construction company. Finally, he earned sufficient money to fulfill his childhood dream after years of hard work. Then, he decided to go to the bank to withdraw all the money he had saved.
Monday morning finally came, and all the summer world was bright and fresh, and filled with life. There was a song in James’s heart; there was cheer in his face and a spring in his every step. The locust trees(刺槐树) were in bloom and the fragrance of the blossoms filled the air.”Everything is perfect,” he thought with a sense of joy and happiness surging through him.
After arriving at the bank, James filled the form and handed it to the cashier. The cashier processed the form and gave him the money. When James took it, he realized that the cashier had given him 12,000 dollars instead of 10,000 dollars which he had filled in the form. James noticed that the cashier had no idea of her mistake and silently kept the money in his bag and left the bank quickly.
On his way home, the sun was at its highest like a cruel unblinking yellow eye staring down at him from the cloudless sky. James quickened his steps and squeezed through the crowd. Finally, he got back home and laid the extra 2,000 dollars on the table.
James began to think about the whole thing. At first, he was overwhelmed by joy, wondering what he could do with the extra money. Then he thought he should return the money, or the cashier had to pay for the mistake that she had unintentionally made. But yet again his mind gave some excuses or other reasons for not returning the money.
But there was a voice of his conscience(良知) that kept coming from inside-you should not take advantage of someone’s mistake. As time went by, James’s restlessness(不安) was increasing.

In the sport of track and field, athletes compete not only with one another but against themselves, and with each race they strive to achieve a new personal best.
For Brandon Schutt running in what would likely be his final cross-country match before graduating high school, his personal best turned out not to be about marking the fastest time but displaying the biggest heart.
Although it was difficult for him to advance to upcoming state meet last Thursday, if his time was good enough that day, he still had the potential to qualify for the match.
After running for one mile, however, Schutt realized he wasn’t going to be able to keep up the fast speed. Rather than risk injury, he slowed to a necessary pace that would allow him to enter the state meet.
Meanwhile, Omaha Burke High School sophomore (二年级学生) Blake Cerveny was running a very different kind of race. Aiming to beat his own personal record, after a fast start, he continued to push himself hard. With less than 400 meters to go, Cerveny’s legs cramped up (抽筋) and failed him. But his will did not. Determined to finish, Cerveny rose from the ground and continued on, only to fall again after another 150 meters… and again, he got up and started running. This time he’d made it only 25 meters more before going down. But he wasn’t done yet.
Concerned, his dad and his coach asked Cerveny if he wanted to stop. He didn’t. With a lot of effort, the young runner pulled himself up and with an unsteady gait (步伐), moved forward for one final push. It wasn’t enough. A less 100 meters from the finish line, he lay curled on the ground and his legs had simply given out.
Before Cerveny’s dad could reach his son, another runner—Brandon Schutt—was at his side to offer a helping hand.

Jackson’s family hired a driver. The driver’s family came to stay with them in a small house in their backyard. That’s how Jackson met the driver’s eight-year-old son Tom. From the day he met Jackson, Tom became his fan. For Tom, 11-year-old Jackson seemed to be a big boy. He would always follow Jackson around.
Tom didn’t go to school. He was admitted to a local government school, but he refused to go. He told Jackson shyly that the teachers only made them copy words from the blackboard. Since he hadn’t learned how to read, he could not understand anything that was written on the blackboard.  Jackson felt sorry for him. On Sunday, Jackson saw Tom sitting under a tree holding an alphabet (字母表) book in his hands. Jackson walked quietly towards him and discovered that Tom was holding the book upside down.
Jackson took the book out of Tom’s hands and turned the right side up. “This is how you should read,” he told Tom. Two big tears rolled down Tom’s cheeks. Tom told Jackson, “I want to be like you, but I can’t do anything.” That evening, Jackson told his parents they had to help Tom get into a better school. It was not easy to make Tom admitted to a new school, because the time for admission was over.
Luckily, one principal (校长) looked at Tom kindly and admitted him to her school. The next day Tom went to his new school wearing a new shirt. But when Tom returned from school, he was a bit sad. The other children in his class had laughed at him. He told Jackson, “They all said I am much older than them but in a smaller class. I don’t want to go to school.”

A fifteen-year-old boy named Justin Foster went missing three days ago in Dover, New Hampshire. On Friday night, Justin went to play football with two friends, who both say Justin went home after the game. And Justin’s sister, Kelly says she heard her brother return home at about 11 p.m.
“I was getting ready for bed,” Kelly said. “Justin went straight to his room. I didn’t see him, but I heard him put on his favorite CD.I went to bed, and was woken up around midnight by a bright light outside my window.”
At first, the young girl thought it was the light of the full moon, but then she realized that it was moving and coming closer.
“I pulled back the curtains and saw a large spaceship flying outside. It had blue lights all around it, and there were many windows. Standing inside were lots of strange creatures with white skin and large black eyes. I was frightened! There was a flash of light and I heard Justin shout, and then the UFO just disappeared. I haven’t seen Justin since. I’m sure the aliens took him.”
Some people in Dover also say that they saw aliens that night. “It’s happened to me!” said Mrs. Mavis Wood. “The aliens took me aboard the UFO so that they could do research on me. Luckily, they returned me home without any injuries. The whole experience was terrible! I think Justin was taken away by them, too.”
When asked about the possibility that Justin was taken by aliens, Detective Sam Peterson, who has taken charge of the case, told journalists, “We will not give up until we find out what happened.”

Prissy Baker was in Oscar Miller’s store on New Year’s morning, buying matches when her uncle, Richard Baker, came in. He did not look at Prissy, nor did she wish him a happy New Year. She would not have dared. He was actually a big, strong-looking man an uncle to be proud of, Prissy thought, if only he were like what he used to be himself. He was the only uncle Prissy had, and when she was a little girl they had been great friends. She used to break into Uncle Richard’s house to play tricks on him, for the woodshed door was always unfastened. But that was before the quarrel.
Uncle Richard had not been speaking with Prissy or her father since the two brothers’ quarrel eight years ago. The fault had been mainly on Richard’s side, but he was unwilling to admit it.
Richard Baker informed Mr. Miller he was on his way to Navarre to deliver a load of pork. “New Year’s Day would be pretty much the same as any other day to you,” said Mr. Miller, for Richard Baker was a bachelor (单身汉).
“Well, I always like a good dinner on New Year’s Day,” said Richard Baker. “It’s about the only way I can celebrate. I got everything ready last night but I have to send the pork now. I won’t get back from Navarre before one o’clock, so I guess I’ll have to put up with a cold bite.”
After her uncle had driven away, Prissy walked thoughtfully home. She had planned to spend a nice, lazy holiday with the new book her father had given her at Christmas and a box of candy. She did not mean to cook a dinner, for her father had to meet a friend and would be gone the whole day. There was nobody else to cook dinner for. Prissy’s mother had died when Prissy was a baby. so Prissy became her father’s housekeeper.
But as she walked home, she could not help thinking about Uncle Richard. He would certainly have cold New Year, cold enough to freeze the whole coming year. She felt sorry for him, picturing him returning from Navarre, cold and hungry, to find a fireless house and an uncooked dinner.

65-year-old Mr. Fairfax had retired from teaching. He was very interested in adventure. This time he made an adventure on a sparsely (稀少地) populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half an mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
With his dark staring eyes at the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Mr. Fairfax stepped on the thin snow on a canal. Suddenly, it collapsed (坍塌) and dropped him four feet to the bottom.
Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Mr. Fairfax was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun, unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got fixed between two rocks. Mr. Fairfax told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of that canal, he wasn’t going to have a very good night.
Mr. Fairfax walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. He immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p.m., and it was nearing 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Mr. Fairfax focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.

    9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the first and second grades, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn’t very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.
So in our school’s annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny! ‘ But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you. It’s your choice.”
My mind was spinning (快速旋转) faster than the windmill (风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.” I looked into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes and said, “Okay, I’ll try.” I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.
In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered (掌握) my lines and songs.

    10.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.

Jim was so delighted to see Cassy that he ran to her at once. However, to his shock, Cassy seemed tired and pale. He approached her worriedly. “Cassy, what happened to you? Do you still remember me?” “The one who bought roses?” “Yes, that’s me. I’m worried about you. You haven’t been here for days.” “Well, I am okay,” she said. “Mom suffered from an illness, and I had to look after her. She needs surgery (手术), so I have to work harder to earn more money.” Jim listened, and tears welled up in his eyes. He told Cassy that he wanted to visit her mother, and Cassy agreed.
Jim then drove to her home, where he met her sick mother, Jade. Jim noticed the poor conditions they were living in and decided to do something to help them. He posted their story online and many people offered help. Thanks to Jim and those kind-hearted people, Cassy’s mother underwent surgery and finally recovered. On the day Jade was discharged from hospital, Jim bought a bouquet for her from Cassy. Jim hoped they could live a happy life with love.

One Two!” Fortunately, my teammates all cooperated with me and pulled the rope to the best of our ability. Before we noticed it, the marker moved to our side and we heard the whistle blown.

    3.   Suddenly the clock on the wall struck four, and James realized it was about the closing time for the bank. Without doubt, the cashier had to make up for the money herself if I took the money. “That’s not fair for her. I should do what I think is right,” James said. James immediately went to the bank and gave the money back to the cashier. After explaining what had happened, the cashier was very grateful. She told James that if she couldn’t find the money, she would lose the job.
In response to the cashier’s remarks, James said, “I am grateful, too. 2,000 dollars that you gave me by mistakes taught me a valuable lesson. Although it took me many years of hard work to earn the money and the extra 2000 dollars did mean a lot to me, I wouldn’t be happy as before if I took the money. However, his first attempt to get Cerveny up failed. But like Cerveny, he too refused to quit. With a second try, Cerveny was on his feet. At a measured jog, with Cerveny holding Schutt for support and Schutt helping Cerveny maintain balance, the two completed the final 75 meters of the course in tandem. Schutt even made sure the injured runner crossed the finish line first, securing his opponent a faster time. Hardly had they crossed the line when Cerveny was taken to the medical tent for care. And Schutt rejoined his teammates even without saying a word with Cerveny.
Deeply touched by the two boys’ story, the local TV station arranged an on-camera reunion where the boys were given the chance to know each other. Thanks to the opportunity, Cerveny met the person to whom he always wanted to express his appreciation. When they met, Cerveny said with his heart flowing with gratitude, “Brandon is an excellent person. He is really kind. My gratitude is beyond words.” Hearing that, Schutt hugged Cerveny tightly and said, “I just help someone in need.” In today’s competitive world in which the emphasis in athletics is so often put on breaking records, it was inspiring to see that for an athlete like Brandon Schutt, the value of true sportsmanship still had legs.

Suddenly an idea came into Prissy’s head. Why not go to uncle’s and prepare a delicious dinner for him? Without any hesitation, Prissy ran to Richard’s home as fast as possible. On her arrival, she slid into the house with her heart pounding strongly. She took out the frozen food from the fridge and mixed the ingredients together. She made some bread, which smelled good. She cooked the best food she ever cooked; the food looked particularly inviting. It must be her uncle’s favorite food. Prissy thought to herself, wishing that her uncle would like it.
Prissy had just set the table when an angry voice cut through the peace. It was Uncle Richard that yelled. “How dare you...” However, hardly had Richard stopped his yelling with fury when he saw the bright room. Into his sight came the tidy and clean table and a feast for dinner. “My dad would be gone the whole day. So...” she added with a sincere voice. “I’m so sorry for the quarrel between us. But could we eat together to celebrate the New Year just like 8 years ago?” Tears welling up with guilt and sorrow, Uncle stepped toward her, stroked her head and gathered her into his tender embrace.
