On a Sunday morning, Mom told Roger that Grandpa was on his way over. Roger grinned and tapped his drums. Grandpa once drummed in a band. He and Roger always had fun playing together. Mom added that some of Grandpa’s joints were hurting him today and he needed a rest. But Roger thought they could play for just a little while.
Roger practiced all morning. Finally, Dad’s car pulled up in front of the house. The car door opened, and Grandpa stepped out. Roger waved to Grandpa from his bedroom window. “Listen to this!” Taking a deep breath, he raised his drumsticks and began. He rocked. He rolled. He built to a lively and cheerful finish and ended with a crash of cymbals, just like Grandpa had taught him. Leaping up, Roger raced outside to Grandpa. “It was wonderful.” Grandpa said, giving Roger a hug. Then he went inside.
Sitting on the couch, Grandpa talked with Mom and played with baby Lucy. When Lucy threw her toy on the floor, Grandpa reached for it. He tried to pick it up, but the toy fell out of his hand. He tried again. The same thing happened. Roger hurried over to help and asked Grandpa to play drum together. “I’m sorry, Roger.” he apologized, “Not now.” So disappointed was Roger that he left without uttering a single word.
After lunch, Roger went to his room to get his skateboard. Grandpa was already inside, standing near the drum set. He picked up a drumstick and began to play. Tap! Tap! The drumstick clattered to the floor. Roger ran over, scooped it up and held it to the Grandpa. Grandpa rubbed his hand, his fingers red and swollen. “I can’t play today, Roger.” he said. In low spirits, Grandpa left the room. Roger got lost in thought.

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not to invite Lucy to the party.”
“She never even talks to me!”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her to get to know everyone.”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!” Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!”
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
From the time I was seven, I had a dream of being a leader of my school student union. I admired them for taking responsibility for us and helping us tackle various challenges. For the next few years, I dreamed of addressing students’ issues and making a difference.
At twelve, I was qualified to participate in the elections. My election speech went smoothly and I thought I would win. Unexpectedly, my name wasn’t on the list our principal announced. My dream had been shattered(破灭). Then the reality struck me: I hadn’t had a chance to win. I wasn’t outstanding enough. Few students knew me. I was unable to win an election. My whole world began to collapse.
As I cried in my room that evening, Dad came in. He asked me what was wrong. “Well, I just lost the elections.” I wept. He continued, “What are you going to do next?” I suddenly realized I was going to stop seeing myself as a failure. I would work hard to make my dream a reality. I decided that I would run for elections again the next year—and I would win.
I recognized that my competitors had a lot of things in their favor. What was in my favor? I had good grades. I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest strength was the faith I had in myself to be a good leader. That evening, I began my election plans a whole year in advance.
First, I realized that I would have to work for each vote. I began to make new friends and help them out in different ways. Slowly during the year, I made many friends across the school. When my official campaign began, they helped drum up support for me. Besides, I attended a course on effective public speaking, learning how to present a great election speech.
When the big day came, I delivered a good speech more confidently than I had the year before.

Tom lived in a city with his father and his grandparents used to live far away in another city. His father would take him to his grandparents’ house during summer holidays. They would stay there for 15-20 days and then return. Tom expected this journey and loved his stay there. This continued every year.
With time, Tom grew up. He thought he was big enough to visit his grandparents alone. Finally, he made up his mind and said to his father, “Now, I am a big boy, so I can go to grandparents’ house alone. Please let me go by myself.” His father didn’t agree at first, but later he agreed on account of his insistence. Worried about his safety, his father taught him everything he needed to know to travel alone. Tom learned carefully, and promised that he would protect himself when traveling. Even so, his father still wanted to make sure of Tom’s safety in person. What he really wanted to do was to accompany his son all the way.
Day came when Tom was to leave for his grandparents’ house alone. His father came with him to see him off. Excitedly, Tom went aboard the train and was comfortably settled at his seat in the train. While waiting, his father went to the window and kept talking to him. Announcement was made for train to depart. Then, his father handed him an envelope and said “Son, if you feel afraid or scared on the way, open this and read it. It will help you to calm down. Whatever happens, I will always be there for you.”
Tom put that envelope in his pocket carefully and told his father, “I remember everything you told me. Don’t worry.” His father nodded his head saying, “I must leave now because I have work to do. I can’t stay here any longer for your departure.” Tom waved goodbye to his father, expecting the coming journey.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sam was stubborn and liked to do things his own way. He liked to eat his meals one food at a time-no mixing. He wore his purple socks on Tuesdays and his lucky sweater whenever he had a spelling test.
Oscar was Sam’s father. He liked to do things, his own way, too. While the neighbors mowed(割草) their lawns, Oscar-grew-a wildflower-meadow(草场). He got a haircut on the first Thursday of every month, whether he needed it or not. And he wore his lucky sweater to every one of Sam’s ball games.
Sam thought his dad was the smartest man on earth, and his dad thought Sam was the finest son a man could ever want... until the day they decided to build the tree house.
Sam had a picture in his mind.
Oscar had a picture in his mind.
The pictures didn’t match.
At the store, they disagreed on how much wood to buy. They argued about how long the nails should be. They quarreled about what color paint they should pick. And when they got home, they argued and ARGUED and ARGUED about which tree was best.
Sam wanted the maple. He wouldn’t give in.
His dad wanted the hackberry. He wouldn’t give in, either.
The boards and the nails and the paint sat in the backyard. They sat there in the hot, summer sunshine. They sat there when the autumn leaves fell. They sat under a blanket of snow all winter.
“Sam is so stubborn,” Oscar complained to Sam’s mother, “If he’d listen to reason, I could show him why the hackberry is best.“
“Why won’t Dad listen to my ideas?” Sam asked his mom.
Sam’s mother tried talking to Sam’s dad. He wouldn’t listen.
She tried talking to Sam. It did no good.
Spring came. The wildflower meadow began to bloom, and baseball practice started. Soon it was Mother's Day, and Sam made his mother a clay pot and filled it with flowers. She loved it.

Cami’s First Soccer Game
Cami’s knees shook as she ran onto the field.
“OK!” called Wood, the coach of Diamond Team.“Remember three things. One, use your feet, not your hands. Two, aim for the goal. Three, which way are we going, Diamonds?”
Cami pointed, trying yelling “That way!”with her teammates, but only a weak voice came out. It was her first soccer game ever, about which Cami had been more excited than starting first grade. She had even tried to wear her soccer shoes to bed last night. But now she was scared, for there were too many kids, too many parents, and too many rules.
Twe-eet! The game was on! Mothers and fathers cheered. Cami ran, too, but not very close to the others. Her best friend, Rosa, kicked the ball. It popped (砰) out beside Cami, who froze, standing rooted to the spot. The group headed toward her, flowing past on either side. Mom and Dad cheered Cami on, but she just stood there, facing her goal.
At last, the whistle blew for halftime. After taking a short rest, Rosa yelled at Cami to pull her back onto the field. Cami’s team faced the other way for the second half. “Cami, you play defense,” Coach said.”Try to stop the ball from getting by you, OK?” Cami nodded and looked behind her at the Diamond goalkeeper. She clapped her gloves and smiled. However, Cami was too nervous to smile back. “Which way are we going, Diamonds?” Coach asked. This time Cami joined in. “That way!”
Twe-eet! Again, the players ran back and forth, up and down. But Cami still didn’t move. Dad shouted, “Go, Cami!” Mom cried, “Come on, Cami!” Cami swallowed hard. Her feet felt as if they were buried deep in beach sand. The players pounded toward her. Who had the ball? Then she saw Rosa out in front, dribbling (运球). But something was not right. Cami frowned.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad is a truck driver, and when I was little, he was gone most of the time, delivering wire and other livestock(牲畜)supplies around the Midwest. So my mom was almost like a single mother. We lived in a small house in Brighton, Colorado, where we had a big yard with plenty of room for our five dogs and two cats to run around. We moved there on my third birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Arlene handing me strawberries from her garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. She and her husband, Bill, lived next door.
Arlene spent a lot of time working in the garden, and I was always talking to her from our yard. I was a chatter-box(喋喋不休). I think what drew me to Arlene and Bill is that they never got tired of listening to me. I also think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me-we were both lonely and anxious-and that may be why she always took the time to listen to me. Bill too. It was a wonderful connection.
One day, my parents asked Bill and Arlene whether they'd watch me while they went out. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Arlene and Bill didn't have kids. They had a spare room in their house, which became my room. I had boxes of toys and books in that room.
Arlene and I would do crafts together. We were always putting tiny decorations on things. Bill taught me how to ride a bike and later how to drive the lawn tractor(割草机)and eventually a car.
When I was about five, I had an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, "What if I adopted Bill and Arlene as my grandparents?" My parents said I could go over and ask them for myself.

Mother had just taken her temperature—and it was over 38℃.
It was right after lunch. The older children were at school, and the baby was sleeping. There was no reason why Mother could not go to bed. But first she had a few things to do: prepare the bean and beef for dinner, leave a note for the cleaners, do the washing and carry out the rubbish.
At last, she sank (瘫倒) into... bed. Ah-h-h-h-! Her aching legs enjoyed comfort from the cool sheets. Her burning eyes closed. She was asleep!
Then, suddenly, the children threw open the front door as they burst home from school. “Mum! Mum! Where ARE you?” Mother tried to answer but their cries rose over her weak calls. Soon they found her—in bed. “Didn’t you even get up yet?” cried the younger girl. “How am I going to get to Bills?” asked the boy. “What about dinner? We’ve got to eat,” said the older girl.
Mother understood. She knew that the children weren’t used to a mother in bed. “I’m sick,” she said. “I can’t do anything. I’ll just have to leave it all to you. Cook the potatoes… take care of the baby... set the table.”
The children stormed out like soldiers going into battle. For a time Mother was left to the quiet of her room and the ache in her head.
Then Father arrived home. He stepped into the bedroom and reached for her hand. He looked tired. Mother started worrying about him. “It’s nothing, darling,” she said. “I can get up and do dinner and…”
Father shook his head, “The kids and I will take over. We’ll get along fine without you.”

On Saturday night, my best friend called and invited me to her birthday the next day. I was very excited to go there, but I needed permission from my parents.
I went to my dad’s room and softly said, “Dad, tomorrow is my best friend’s birthday and I really want to go.” Papa said, “OK. I don’t mind, but ask your mom.”
I asked my mom and she said, “OK. You can go, but you have to be back before 10.”
The next morning my mom was surprised to see me. No alarm. No Mom’s warning. I just woke up by myself. Finally, the whole day had passed and it was party time. My dad dropped me off at my friend’s place and told me that he would pick me up at 10. I said “OK” and ran away.
I enjoyed myself a lot at the party. We had dinner and played so many games. It was 10 finally. I remembered my mom telling me that I should be back before 10. I came out and started searching for my dad, but I could not find him. I was so worried and scared. I waited and waited, and then I started walking. I thought at least I could walk home as my house was 20 minutes away from my friend’s. As I was walking, I was crying as I had never walked alone on the road that late at night.
Suddenly I heard someone shouting something. I was scared and started walking fast. I thought some criminal(不法分子) was there. As I was walking fast, I heard someone walking fast behind me. I started running and crying, and then I saw some parked cars. I hid behind the cars. I saw a shadow searching for me. I hoped someone would help me. 10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.
No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.
I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran! Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, “How will she ever know who did it? She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point.
I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home. I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew... until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me? Would she call police? Worse still, would she tell my parents I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way
I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away —as if punishing myself could undo things.
“I would tell everything to Grandpa,” a voice inside me said.
“I was wrong.” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t.

He got the car keys and off they went. They sought from one store to another but there was no drum with a pedal. Suddenly, there came a rhythmic sound of drum from the opposite street. Following the sound, they found the exact drum they wanted in a store. Without hesitation, they merrily bought the drum home.
Para. 2:
Roger and Dad walked up to Grandpa, carrying the drum with a pedal. After Dad fixed the drum beside Roger’s drum set, Roger pressed the pedal with his foot and yelled joyously. at Grandpa to try the drum. Slowly, Grandpa reached out his foot and pushed the pedal. The whole family was immersed in happiness.

Now Father’s Day was coming up. Recently, Sam always came home a little late after school every day. His parents were also very curious but Sam always said with a smile, “He is studying for his exam.” It was a clear morning, with clouds floating in a clear blue sky and birds singing softly as if celebrating the day’s special holiday: Father’s Day. Sam walked up to his father and said delightedly, “Happy Father‘s Day, Dad! I want to give you a gift!” So he took his father’s hand and walked together into his backyard.
“Oh no! I like this,” said his dad. When he saw everything in front of him, he was so surprised that he stood there with his mouth wide open. Suddenly, Oscar knew what Sam had been up to these days. He had been preparing his precious Father’s Day gift, the tree house which was exactly what he had always wanted -- hackberry trees, and the other designs matched exactly what he had in mind. Oscar hugged his son Sam and whispered, “Thank you, my son!” “Dad, you have always been my favorite person and the smartest father in the world!” Sam said proudly. At that moment, Sam realized that being stubborn was not a good thing. What changed his stubbornness was the love and care of his family!

They were shocked at first, but to my big surprise, my mom
suggested,“Why not remove the fence so that you could play with your grandpa more conveniently !” All of us agreed. Now, with two gardens connected, we would never feel lonely again. How important love was!
